El Sobrante, CA
i can't think of anything wrong with this store so I gave it a rare (for me) 5 stars. I like to go to this store. For one thing, they have a great assortment of different kinds of lightbulbs. They have some cleaning (house) products that I can't find anywhere else. They have a number system where you can get skilled help when your turn comes. The store is fun to look around in while you wait and the helpers are always friendly, nice and, most importantly, knowledgeable about handyman problems; they also make keys that work.
For a hardware store, this place is neat, organized, clean.
Last, but not least, they have over-the-counter reading glasses for the unheard of price of $3.99 As far as I can tell, they are no different from those sold in the drugstore...! -

Ace is the place, right?
It's nearby and usually has what I'm looking for in one way or another.
The staff is hit or miss, depending on who you get. Some people are really knowledgeable and helpful, and others give you the look like they could care less to talk to you. And if you're lucky, you'll get to overhear them talking about their nightly exploits with one another. :)
Having just moved into a new place, I've been heading over there fairly often for this or that little thing that I need. I'm sure I'll be heading back soon. -

No big box store for me. Best thing for me has been the information that enabled me to take on home repairs that included repairing old stucco walls, replacing faucets and electrical switches and outlets.
Last year my partner and i went in with a disagreement over a large purchase and staff expertly helped us settle the disagreement in time to benefit from a sale.
I like the men and women who work there loads. -

It must be going down hill. There is a new fellow there, English or Irish accent who is curt and hostile.
I wanted to have batteries tested so I could replace them.Ive done that before. He wouldn't oblige me and insisted I buy an expensive battery tester. When I asked him about those old tester that used to come with barreries he just sneered and said that was 15 years ago. -

This is difficult, because the clerks and the front desk staff were very nice. My bone to pick is with a MANAGER named Danny. Maybe his father owns the store, so he gets away with being rude and incompetent. I went in there for an adapter for my shower arm. He told me it did not exist. His words were : "You'll have to live with it". Wait a minute. Isn't this where people come when they don't want to "live with it" but want to fix it and make it better? On a whim I went in to a different Ace, the one on MLK in Oakland. Day and night. The kind and helpful man, Paul was his name, produced an adapter in 2 minutes, for $5.99. I went back to the El Cerrito store another day to exchange something I purchased during that other visit. I debated correcting the manager. Something told me he would not like it. I decided to talk with him. He has such bad energy, just being near him is distasteful. Poor guy must not like himself much. He denied saying the adapter did not exist. He stated that there were 3 different kinds. Funny, he did not tell me or show me what they were so I could get the correct one. At the other Ace, Paul said "try this one, and if it doesn't fit, bring it back and we'll try another" The first one fit perfectly, because he listened to my description and knew his stuff. amazing. Paul was so nice I wanted to go home and bake cookies for him. Danny, on the other hand, needs therapy.

Last week I needed to buy a new land phone. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a plain'nsimple phone in this here town?
The cause was real enough. Mr. Frugal and I had struggled for the past six months with our cheapo telly...the middle key simply would not work.
Made dialing out difficult. Pushing the 8 button firmly with a pencil would usually allow it to register. Usually. We solved the problem by not dialing friends who had an 8 in their phone number.
We have an 8 in our sequence so "phoning home" ceased to be an option.
The day finally arrived when the blasted gizmo just wouldn't work at all. No outgoing calls.
Went to the various drugstores in town. No phones. Went to all of the stores in the famed El Cerrito Plaza, this being our primary shopping center. No phones.
(Insert here any jokes you may have heard this St. Paddy's Day regarding pugilistic behavior. I was ready to punch out something...and it wasn't going to be that dagblasted deader'n a doornail phone. )
Pastime Hardware. Why not? Parked the car, ran inside. Grabbed the first store clerk I saw....
"Phone, phone, I need a phone. DO you have a phone?"
Bless the kid's heart. His customer service skills were excellent. He gently steered me away from the cash register, away from any sharp instruments and toward a cabinet full of land phones.
I quickly chose a phone. Not quite the cheapest, but close...
This one has Caller ID. And I do need to know if any of my "8" friends are trying to reach me. I have a bit of explaining to do about why they haven't been called recently.
Thanks, Pastime! Good service, good products, good management .
After all these years...bet you still have Plaster of Paris.Listed in: El Cerrito,CA

I visited this store on a Sunday. Nobody in sight so I took my number for assistance. The clerk, an older white male with grey hair and grey moustache, couldn't have been more unpleasant. His assistance extended only to the degree of pointing to a direction and naming aisle numbers. He was impatient and clearly disliking his job and the red vest he had to wear. Waiting around I noticed that I wasn't the only one receiving such poor service, other had to also return and ask him again for more thorough directions.
I see absolutely no reason for avoiding the larger chain, Home Depot, a couple miles north. Avoid this place. -

I always have amazing service when I go to this hardware store. If I ever need help, the clerks in the red vests go out of their way to help me. On certain projects clerks have taken way more time and helped me way more than I could ever imagine. I am puzzled at the negative reviews I see here. I have never been treated badly. Now I wonder if this place is changing? I haven't seen it, so I hope it isn't true. I love this store.

Pros: Huge selection of cleaning supplies and lightbulbs. HUGE.
Cons: Bunch of sanctimonious dicks wearing ACE vests walking around under the delusion that they are helpful, knowledgeable and not assholes. -

Talk about Customer Service!!!
I'm not much of a do-it-yourselfer so i really appreciate the friendly and helpful staff at Pastime ACE. They always know what I need and exactly where in the store to find it.
So instead of aimlessly roaming the aisles of Home Depot, not knowing what exactly im looking for and trying to ask question of clueless employees.. I'd way rather be in and out of ACE with a smile on my face! -

Berkeley, CA
I have a love-hate thing with this place. Some things it's great for, and some it's horrendous.
Pros:
Excellent fastener assortment. Critical for a hardware store.
Fairly good inventory (except plumbing see below).
Lots of parking.
Cons:
Employees are just about the grumpiest I've seen. Especially the cashiers.
Plumbing department. I've gone there twice to find what should have been something simple. They seem to be having some sort of plumbing parts crisis there especially with valve stems, washers, etc.
A couple of times I've tried to ask a simple question like where I can find a furnace filter, and was rudely told "Get a number". Hey that was 3 words. If you just said "Aisle 12" that would have been 2 words and both of us would have been happier.
Just about ALL the tools are locked up now. I HATE this. So I have to get a number and wait just to look at something.
You'll definitely pay a premium for shopping here.
3 or 4 checkout lines. Another pet peeve. Can't you figure out the single line method like the banks use so that I don't have to be penalized by picking a line where the customer is double-checking every charge made and then whipping out a checkbook? -

If your looking for an Ace Hardware that has everything and then some this is the place to go. As for the customer service. That's a different story. It's pathetic. Most of the folks that work there need to take a class on how to provide good customer service. I wish them the best of luck in that area.

When it comes to home repairs, I suck.
So of course, my son, Jonny, would like me to help him modify his xBox wireless controller. Huh? Can't we just buy what you want at GameStop?
No? Off to Pastime!
We needed to remove tamperproof screws. Doesn't "tamperproof" mean don't touch? And Orange and Black hobby paint?
There is such a screwdriver, which costs $15.
Two cans of paint, $12.
Helping my son with his project, priceless.
See the photo of the finished product.
Like the song says, "Ace is the place!" -

I love hardware stores. I always have, even as a kid. I've been shopping at Pastime for the past 24 years. My Chiropractic practice is two short blocks away and there isn't a month that goes by when I don't have to go in for something.
Once you go in the main door, head straight to the back of the store, take a number if you have to and prepare to experience old style customer service. You know, the kind where they say "yes sir" and "thanks for coming in".
In our post-Home-Depot-takes-over-putting-the-independent s-out-of-business world service by staff that actually know what they are doing is a rarity............. Pastime has it in spades -

We live nearby and are in and out of this store about 15 times per year. Not once have we encountered anything but excellent helpfulness and good treatment. Example: I bought some pre-made shelves, lamenting that, in order to get a good color match, I had to take one with a rather large scratch in the finish ("covered by books anyway," I thought). A few days later, I realized that I needed a longer shelf length. I returned those which I had purchased and told the clerk "It was scratched when I bought it." "Sounds right to me," he said. "Don't worry about it." Full credit. So I'd like to give them credit.

I purchased a sensor type water line that proved to be defective in only two week. it kept shutting the water off for no reason Upon taking it back, I was directed to a saleswoman who pointed out the same water line, which I declined and selected a standard water line. Upon taking it to the counter, the manager Lied to me in front of other customers said that they have not sold these water lines in a long time, even though they are still selling the exact lines at this time. Although I did not have my receipt at the time, my issue is that he lied. I found my receipt (and many other receipts for purchases there) later at home showing my purchase. I shall not take it back, because I want no further dealings with people who lie. As a famous person said, "scratch a lier, you will find a thief."

East Bay
Pastime continues to be my favorite hardware store of all time!
We continue to come here for all the reasons mentioned in my original review.
They also sell Green products.
They have extra tough, super strong Contractors' garbage bags for totting hunks of cement, debris of all kinds and God only knows what else.
On recent visits I have gotten rubber replacement ends for my cane chair, a super large spice rack, a pink waste basket, cedar coat hangers and stick-on plastic wall hooks.
The other day I took in a plastic cat carrier that our little tabby boy had
dislodged several of the plastic fasteners by his vigorous head bumps. For a 10 lb kitty, he can deliver a wallop! The sweet clerk found the perfect nuts and bolts! Yay!
They also sell huge bags of soil and sand.
I heart you Pastime!Listed in: Please don't forsake them, oh…, San Pablo Avenue is a long,…, There will be RIots and…, GREAT Customer Service, Places I've been to at least…

Review from Rachel D.
Adore this place. Been going here ever since we moved nearby.
I've been here mainly for cookware (bought my beloved cast iron Lodge pan here; found a substitute coffee carafe for the coffee maker). I can get my Ball canning jars and paraphernalia. I got my cleaning supplies (my Fels-Naptha soap, Borax, and Washing Soda to make homemade laundry detergent); and of course I know where to go for household repairs.
Most of the time, I know what I need to buy and where to buy them. During those times when I need help, I happily know to get a number from the ticket machine and stick around browsing by the housewares until they call my number. Very, very knowledgeable and helpful staff.
I don't think I've ever had a bad experience here. (Except when I buy soil, which is not their fault. Organic soil = no pesticides = tiny gnats that will fly out of that soil and infest your place.) -

Forget all of the other hardware stores you've been to...Pastime Ace is the best hardware store in the East Bay!
While the store is on the smaller side, they stock pretty much anything you can think of - even little doilies to serve with your tea and crumpets.
The employees that work here are knowledgeable and you can always find someone to help you.
Love this place. -

I have shopped at this hardware for many years. I have tried to support this "Mom and Pop" store by shopping here instead of Home Depot and OSH. However, when I tried to recycle batteries at Pastime, I was told by one of the owners that they only recycle rechargables, not regular alkaline (of which they sell many). I was very disappointed when the young man said I should go to the recycle center to take my batteries. I said it would be a good community service for Pastime to take and recycle these, especially since they sell them. He said they were not interested in doing this and when I said "don't you even care about the health of the planet?" he said he didn't. My jaw dropped. This store has always been helpful and I always felt they were good citizens. The new "owners" are the offspring of the old owners who have retired. These young kids don't seem to be the good businessmen their relatives were. Inheriting a business is different from working to build one. I won't shop there anymore. I go to the Ace Hardware on the Arlington, across from the gas station. They have a large inventory and the people are very nice. I think their business has to work hard to stay in business, unlike Pastime.

Review from Tam F.
This is my all time favorite Ace (or any hardware) location..It has been around for like ever, is larger than it used to be and carries things one wouldn't expect-like a large variety of Rubbermaid items and some furnishings. Sometimes things are pricier than say Target, but they have a great supply.
I went in last Friday looking for a hamper for my daughter's newly refurbished room. The last hamper she had came from here, so after looking at numerous other places always leaving empty handed, we came here with high hopes and sure enough, she found something she liked. Service is always friendly and they stand by the old "Ace is the place with the helpful hardware man" saying! -
Review from Susan S.
Alameda, CA
This place is like an addiction for me and I should only be allowed to visit once a year *WITH* a strict budget in mind. Alas, I can't help it...for many reasons:
1. I LOVE to cook and love the hard to find food gadgets that Pastime HW carries. My coworker watched wide-eyed when she got some keys copied there today, because within five minutes, I was walking slowly up and down the kitchen aisles like a zombie loading up a cart with: a bacon/grill press, a European hand grinder, unbleached cheesecloth, a potato ricer, some new-fangled cooking bands (replacing butcher twine purposes), two ceramic bowls, a hard-to-find pot scrubber, Meyers Laundry Soap, spring -form pans, and a bag of hard-to-find jelly bellies that Pastime stocks close to their check out area.
My coworker knew she was in jeopardy of never getting back to work at a reasonable hour since I was on a roll. So, at that point, she politely but firmly went outside and got into the car since I had just turned yearningly towards the gardening section and that would mean a *lot* more time, and possibly several more cartloads worth of merchandise.
*sigh* I resisted (and am still resisting) the urge to buy any more...well for today anyway. Maybe I'll get lucky and the keys she got copied won't work and then we get to go back!
2. I am a tool geek. I repair, install, rack, configure computer servers, networking, UPS's for my job. I LOVE doing it, and love shopping for tools for it. I pretty much use everything ranging from small power tools to tiny hand tools the size of an eyeglass repair kit's. Who wants to go to the Home Despot in Emeryville, when Pastime is so close by to where I work?
AND, there are actually knowledgeable people at Pastime that will help you find the obscure allen wrench, etc. Don't even get me started on what kind of service I get at Home Despot in contrast!
3. I own a home and like to garden. Granted, my garden isn't that big, but I do have the area's most prolific Meyer lemon tree that needs to be fed, trimmed and sang to. I also have lavender, rosemary, and rose bushes I also dote over. Pastime has all kinds of things for maintaining your garden.
4. I like to grill --- this Gurl Meets Grill a lot. Any oddball grill accessory, chips, charcoal can be found at Pastime. If not, I'm sure they would get it for you. They've got a lot of cool grill tools too.
I could go on and on here. My other half has chastised me for buying too much due to lack of kitchen storage. No problem! Pastime has a huge selection of storage containers for every room.
Hardware Heaven. Reasonably priced too! -

I'm an artist who often will browse for obscure parts at Pastime.
The staff is helpful and creative, and doesn't freak when I say I don't exactly know what I'm making but "here's approximately what it is!!!"........when I've had sculptural or more practical homeowner
problems to solve they, often can brainstorm with me to solve it.
I'd rather pay slightly more on some things just to have the friendliness
and helpfulness of a business with an informed staff. The big
box stores, by the way, are not cheaper on a high percentage of items.
Also, at Pastime you can actually FIND what you're looking for as opposed to Home Depot where one often leaves in a daze after looking for an hour.......and then another hour looking for staff, and then another hour finding someone who knows the material. -

I'd forgotten how big this store is (or maybe it expanded?). They have a room for bolts and fasteners. A rooms for keys, locks, and ropes. Several for home fixtures and appliances. More barbecues than Home Despot. Far livelier employees than HD or Orchard. All hardware stores should be like this, yet few are.
Good work folks! If you sold guns and burritos too I would spend all of my disposable income at your store.
When I visited yesterday, the store was mobbed by burning man people who qualify every request with "for burning man". As in, "Do you have nylon webbing? You know, for Burning Man? Do you have a bucket suitable for Burning Man?" But I won't hold that against 'em. Heck next year I might open one of those seasonal stores like the Halloween and Christmas places. We'll sell everyday boring camping items like ropes, tarps, water bottles, and boots, with one important distinction: they will be "Specially Formulated For Burning Man!" $$$$$! -
Review from Hanson Q.

What? I can't believe that I haven't Yelped Pastime yet! I have been here literally hundreds of times, as it is my first stop for nearly everything home improvement or tool and sculptural needs. Short of lumber, they have just about everything for the home and for light construction. Prices are definitely a bit higher than you'd pay, but you'll save a lot of time going there first.
What really works for them is their customer service. They are great on the phone, and they are great in the store. In-store, there's a central location where you take a number to be helped, and an associate will come get you when he/she is free. This in itself is the best reason to shop at Pastime. -

I came wanting to buy a switch to replace in my (1913) home. Some creative idiot had done the wiring and no book could help me figure out how to rewire the switch in a safe way. One of the guys who worked there carefully drew me a diagram while taking a break from eating his sandwich (he was at lunch). I was so grateful for his time and his generosity and his expertise that I offered to write a letter to the owner singing his praises (he declined saying it wasn't necessary).
They carry great stock on many items and may be more expensive than than H.D. and the like but the shopping experience is great and real knowledgeable folks will gladly give you expert help and find the right supplies. I drive 15 miles to go to this place. -
Review from Renate V.
El Cerrito, CA
I am giving this place 5 stars even though it is expensive. That is the only downside. They have everything, and I mean everything, in this joint. They even carry several types of flame-tamers for use in clay pot cooking. If you need Contact paper, mesquite for smoking a brisket, light bulbs, a fireplace screen and a roll of paper towels you can get all of it in one trip.
And, joy of joys, they give you great customer service. There is a place you can go in the back to find help, but usually just looking a bit lost will get you hooked up with some help pronto. You can almost never get this in the megastores.
This is one of the last of a dying breed. -

I am, admittedly, a hardware junkie. Pastime fulfills all my desires. Sometimes I just wanna walk around and buy stuff I didn't realize I needed. Other times I need to to run in, get exactly what I want, and run out (after paying of course).
Business Week named the Ace Hardware 10th on its 2008 Customer Service Elite List. As the parent company of Pastime Hardware, Ace provides good customer service throughout its supply chain so good service values are passed from the top down.
I value the knowledgeable staff, many of whom have worked at Pastime for many years. I also appreciate the wide selection of every sort of hardware item. I rarely find Pastime is out of stock on the things I buy. In these days of shrinking inventories, this is a valuable resource.
I've never been disappointed or had a bad experience at Pastime. If you live or work in Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito you must get to know Pastime Hardware. -

Friendly staff and they usually have what I need.
A typical visit: easy parking in the rear, walk in and get a number, a knowledgable employee quickly helps you find what you need, grab something you didn't know you needed on the way to the registers, short checkout line and you are done.
And it aint Home Depot. -

Everytime I come here, I regret not visiting more often. They have a selection of the most random stuff. It's like Sanrio meets the container store with a tool belt.
I came here looking for specific craft paints (which they did not carry, even though a non affiliated website said they did), but I ended up walking out with a bunch of misc stuff for my house .....
I sort of have a weird project to hook up garden hose to my showerhead (no joke), and this older gentlemen spent 20 minutes helping me find all the adaptors to ensure a successful hookup. The staff here seems top notch ... like they actually enjoy each other ... or at least they do a decent job of hiding it.
Maybe one of their staff is the devil's bounty hunter too ... -

This store is dangerous to your bank account. I always find something(s) that I desparately need that before I walked in, I hadn't even known existed. Also, I occassionally stumble on onto one of their (cash-only!) sidewalk sales and those are completely impossible to resist- my god you can score some great deals at these! I never know when they'll be, which is probably a good thing.
In general it's expensive, yes. But they always have what you need and if they don't they'll order it. In fact, you'll have to arm-wrestle them NOT to order it. Their customer service is exemplary, and really, I'm sure that's why they're still around and (apparently) thriving. I've been going here for years and everyone has always been very nice, even when I'm describing things completely ignorantly. And the few times I've had to bring things back (because I bought the wrong thing) they've never even blinked. -

A great friendly local hardware store. Carry all the ACE hardware stuff. Nice people and they carry stuff you won't find at Home Depot.
Some of the stuff, like power tools, and paint and wood stain, etc., is a little expensive.
For power tools and painting supplies, Home Depot's quite a bit cheaper.
But some hand tools are actually cheaper here than at Home Depot.
And you can buy just one nut or bolt, etc., which is really cool.
Great place to find weird little gadgets and the odd part for whatever. -

I love this hardware store. They have a wonderful selection of everything you need for your home. There are constantly staff who are happy to help. If they are a little busy, they even have this great number system where you can wait to have your question answered.
The staff there are very knowledgeable and friendly. My last trip there, I was trying to decide on a shower hose, and really couldn't decide. The lady there, was great. She explained the differences and told me what she has in her shower and how it worked. It really helped me make my decision.
It is definitely a place I will continue to go. -

Pastime Hardware seems like a bit of a hodge-podge when you first go in. It's clear that they expanded incrementally, but the layout makes perfect sense. In addition to all the fasteners, tools. and odd shaped widgets you could want, they have helpful, friendly and plentiful staff who are eager and willing to help. I have gone in on several occasions trying to engineer a solution to a problem - the staff I talked to no only got me the parts I needed to complete my project, but also dove in and helped me design a fix.
This is your father's hardware store, and that's a very good thing. It doesn't feel like a Home Depot or a hardware section of a Wal-Mart. I make it a point to come to Pastime Hardware before I try anywhere else. If you want to buy an oven or a fridge, go to a warehouse store. If you need hardware, tools, or materials for working around the house, Pastime is the place to start. -
Review from Bruce K.
Point Richmond, CA
In a world full of crummy customer service from Big Box chain stores, Pastime hardware is the real deal. First of all, they have about everything you want from a hardware store, including actual hardware. I went looking for an obscure hex bold that works as a bat pin for a potters wheel, and they had it.. 58 cents. Or I could go to the ceramic supply store and get the stainless steel ones for 2.75.
Good garden section. Nuts, bolts, nails and handles. Weather stripping. Light bulbs. Paint. Cleaner. Storage bins. It's all there.
Best of all, they will find it for you, tell you how to use use it and you'll get in and out in just a few minutes. Home Depot? Fuggedaboutit! We gotta stand by the remaining local businesses that actually understand what customer service is all about. -
Review from Chris K.
Having been coming off and on for a couple of years. They have good customer service, but their prices are a bit steep compared to the big box stores. Great place when you only need a couple of items.
They carry items that most don't like S type fuses {1920's} electrical system... which I found in a pinch, and since then rewired the house!
