This is one of the best sandwich places ever to exist on the planet.
I heart this place (my favorite is the chicken thigh sandwich)
Cash only.
Hours open can be tricky.
Messy. It gets everywhere. It's worth every drop of messy goodness that gets on your face, your hands, your arms... Mmmm...
The Cuban roast was slathered in sauces, mayonnaise, and all kinds of surprising shiz. However, I must say that after eating 2 bites the novelty wore off and I was left with a goopy overly seasoned sandwich.
Don't get me wrong, it was a good sandwich, but I would never wait in line for it again. I just found the ingredients too overwhelming. People that usually opt for fresh and simplistic northwest food should probably stay away from this place.
If I ever do work up the appetite to come here again I'd order a rice dish (they looked delicious!) and bring some antacids with me.
Oh, and bring cash. This place doesn't take credit/debit.
Bon appetit, Seattlelites. This place is worth a try!
I was humiliated by a sandwich today. Allow me to explain; first, I sprinted down the street for this sandwich. Yes that's right. I had been waiting in line with my boyfriend for over 20 minutes when I realized that Paseo only takes cash. We were near the front of the line by that point and so I sprinted five blocks to an ATM and five blocks back to Paseo.
I had the chicken thigh sandwich and it was incredible: salty crunchy bread, crisp cold romaine, mayonnaisey spicy sauce, soft almost creamy onions, dark juicy thigh meat, jalapenos, and more sauce.
So much sauce in fact that it dripped down my leg, a pack of feral dogs chased me, and I'm typing this post with delicious smelling sauce on my pants. No I did not consider changing my pants.
And so that my friends is how it came to be that I was humiliated by a sandwich.
Holy messy sandwich! Paseo may look like a tin-can sweatshop to the untrained eye and will frustrate people with its cash-only policy, but really I think Paseo is just bringing Cuba to Seattle.
Honestly, I'm willing to overlook these small nuisances due to the unbelievable food Paseo puts out. The grilled pork and Cuban roast sandwiches are the best I've eaten in Seattle, if not ever. Jam packed with flavors and toppings, I will most likely don a bib and dark-colored clothing next time as it is a huge, delicious mess to eat. Everything on the sandwich seems to come together to create an ecstatic taste. The onions, the jalapenos, the perfectly cooked pork and the sauce really hit the spot and create a unique flavor that you aren't going to find anywhere else in this city. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a sandwich this much!
I did feel like a sucker when I saw that people could call in and just pick up their sandwich. I like to think that the sandwich tasted better because I waited twenty minutes in line for it, but next time I'll probably skip the line and call ahead. And there WILL be a next time.
WARNING: Consuming tasty Cuban pork sandwiches may induce putrid gas.
it was filthy, oily, sloppy good, real sloppy good. We got four of them to go and it was worth the wait.
it's hard not to talk about the great mini baguettes all the sandwiches come on or the grilled onions with carmelized goodness blazed on them. Also the guaranteed messyness factor when you combine oily onions and crisp baguette adds to the delicious display of juices everywhere while eating.
Cash only, get 'em while their hot.
I adore the food here. And I makes me feel like a local that I even know to call ahead and get it to go, and make sure I have cash. Because if you don't, you're SOL.
Lines can be around the block, no cash, no love, but the grilled pork sandwiches are incredible and the sauce is something I cannot figure out how to replicate. Spicy, saucy goodness and chewy delicious buns. What could be better? Oh, under $7? Done!
Oh Paseo, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
It took me three tries to get to Paseo's and today was finally my lucky day. I was weary of arriving around 1pm, due to previous reviews saying that they can run out of certain items the later in the afternoon you go. I was happy to find out that what we wanted was still there! WOOHOO!
I ordered the #8 Midnight Cuban Press, my bf ordered the #2 the Cuban Roast and then we shared a cup of beans and the fish in rojo sauce (3*)over rice. Oh. My. Lord.
The food came out and each of the sandwiches had a piece of corn on the cob. Nice touch as it was nice and hot and I could swear it was smothered in the grilled pork pan drippings...yeah, I'm pretty sure. The sandwiches themselves were beautiful and big! The ingredients peaking out from inbetween the two halves of yummy crusty bread. The meat was so tender and moist, just amazing flavor! The sauteed onions were perfectly cooked, nicely seasoned and still had a nice crisp to them, not raw crisp, but just right. The beans were tasty, nice and creamy with some very unique flavors. The fish in rojo sauce was so yummy and the rice was perfectly cooked and mopped up the rojo sauce fantastically. Even though we ordered it as a 3*, it wasn't that spicy at all. Just right amount of spice as to not overpower the rest of the flavors.
I mean I can't seem to come up with enough words to describe how good this meal was. The ingredients just melded so beautifully and all the flavors worked so well together, nothing overpowered anything else, it was seriously a food orgy in my mouth. Unbelieveable!
A word to the wise, remember your cash as they don't take plastic here and make sure you have enough napkins with you as these sandwiches are messy. SO GOOD...but messy!
Now go forth and enjoy, because if you haven't gone there yet there is no excuse for you not to. Give yourself a present...go and enjoy.
Mmmm. Damn good sandwiches.
It's probably time for me to branch out with the menu, but I always lose my nerve and buy the standard #2.
As the legend goes, a #2 will also cure athlete's foot, shingles, and blurred vision.
Only complaint: cash only is a pain.
I was onced asked if you could have one thing delivered to your house every morning and that choice would never change for the rest of your life what would it be? The answer is the grilled pork sandwich from Paseo's!
I have yet to find anything that tops it!!!
For the best experience call ahead and order it to go, it can be really crowded and when it is nice out can also take 30 minutes or longer for the wait. But it is worth it!
They really are THAT good. The best way to eat here is to start calling when they open and put your order in for lunch time so you can skip the line when you get there and be on your way. It doesn't really matter what kind of sandwich you order because it's the crack in the drippy mayo which makes them so tasty. My personal favorite is the grilled onion. I had to subtract one star not for the sometimes so-so service or complete lack of space, but the crushing disappointment that comes with salivating over the thought of enjoying a sandwich from Paseo's today and being on the losing end of an early closure or premature bread disappearance.
The lines were long but worth the wait! I got there around 12:15 and I didn't get my food until 12:50 and I had it to go. There are only 4-5 tables in there so it is unlikely to get seating.
I ordered #2 Cuban Roast which is their most popular sandwich there. The bread was a toasted baguette sandwiching together my just cooked, juicy, tender pork with a slice of green leaf lettuce, some jalapenos and their special sauce. OMG! I swear there were fireworks blasting above me as I took each and every bite! My husband had the #4 Smoking Thighs and that was so delicious as well! Very juicy and flavorful with the right amount of spices.
The prices are under $8 and they only accept CASH so don't forget bring CASH!
Oh also, when you arrive it looks as if there are a bunch of people ALL waiting to order BUT half of them are WAITING so don't let that discourage you! I will most definitely come back!
P.S. If you are ordering it to go, just call ahead and pick up!!!
I've never had a better sandwich, EVER. They are all good, but the most mind-blowing experience is the grilled pork. Its not a traditional sandwich, but it is the greatest thing ever made. Make sure you get there in time, they usually sell out pretty quick during the week, and when they are open on the weekends, they usually stop selling sandwiches at 2pm.
Hours are really hard to follow (sometimes they just close for months on end) and the service is usually pretty slow and crappy cause its so small and crowded, but with food like that, who cares?!
I have to knock it down a peg... and I am not enjoying this, but everytime (and I mean everytime) we try to bring someone to Paseo for a sandwich they are closed! This time I checked the website before coming... it said it was open. When we arrived there was a sign saying it was closed for the Holiday break (it was almost 45 days), but nothing left on the web site! If you are going to close for an extended time, you're a popular place, and you have a web site then you need to up date it.
The food is still amazing.

The Sandwich is perhaps my favorite category of food. The Paseo pork sandwich particularly tops my list.
Others have addressed the superlative attributes of the Paseo sandwich, I want to address Paseo's weak points:
1. Cash only. This may be annoying. Plan ahead or take a short walk to get cash.
2. Long line. Also annoying. Solution: go during off-peak hours, or call in your order ahead of time.
3. Limited bread. This is ridiculous, a sandwich shop running out of bread. However, while you're running to get cash, buy a baguette from the store. Put your roast pork entree inside the baguette. Problem solved.
4. Terrible gas. There is no solution. Do not go here on date night.
Despite these drawbacks, Paseo is the best meat-between-bread meal around, and fully deserves its reputation.
Their Cuban sandwiches are NOT Cuban sandwiches. There. I said it.
I'm also gonna be the party pooper and refuse to jump on the OMG BEST SANDWICHES EVERRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!111OneEleven1111 bandwagon...only because I am all about simplicity. My palate gets confused when bold flavors are layered. (Note: simple complex flavor layers does exist.)
From the site:
"All sandwiches are on a lightly toasted baguette slathered with aioli (seasoned mayo) , fresh cilantro, pickled jalapeños, crisp romaine lettuce & crowned with caramelized onions."
And their rendition of Cuban:
"Midnight Cuban Press $7.75
Our contribution to the Fremont arts. Cuban roast pork nestled atop sweet banana peppers, draped w/ sheer slices of smoked ham & Swiss cheese melted between a hot press. It's a shame to eat such a masterpiece. (No lettuce or jalapeños)"
:(
For sandwiches in this price range, I prefer Salumi's.
Meh, just okay. I don't know why I was expecting so much. Perhaps it was the never ending lines? I waited a good 20 minutes outside on a cold, rainy day to try this place. Once inside, I could barely read the size 4 font on the menu above the counter to order. I ended up with the sandwich advertised as their "most popular." Lucky for me, once I actually received my overpriced sandwich (did I mention this place is pricey?), there was nowhere to sit in their teeny, tiny little restaurant. My boyfriend and I ended up taking our food back to his car to eat. Nothing like eating a messy sandwich in a clean car...
I guess I'd be up for giving this place a second try. The food wasn't too bad, I was just disappointed with the experience. I might not be as cranky about it if I were waiting outside during a nice Seattle summer day, or if I had a better chance to peruse the menu.
There's probably something wrong with you if you don't love the #1. Um, hello! Jalapenos, mayo, cilantro and juicy marinated roast pork on their luscious baguette? By far, my favorite sandwich on the planet.
Only downside is there's nowhere to sit that's warm (usually) and there's always a long line unless it's pouring. So, go on a windy weeknight and take it home...
My mouth is watering just thinking about this sandwich!!! Their Pulled Pork sandwich is the best sandwich I have ever laid my hands on! Their pork sandwich is good too, but harder to eat since you have to bite into a chunk of meat. However, it is so worth it, and so is the mess and having your fingers smell like the sandwich for a few hours.
I've been to Seattle TWICE and both times eaten here. It totally makes my trip worthwhile. I was going to go twice in one trip, but they were closed..... I think it was a Sunday?
The only bad thing is that this place is so tiny, there are only about..... 8? 10? seats. The first time I ate there, we ended up taking it to go and eating at our hotel. It was surprisingly worth it.
I would recommend eating there. It comes with corn and is less of a hassle to eat in than take out. The corn is so juicy it squirts!
I need to fly back asap!
Oh boy. I recently tried Paseo for the first time (yes, I know, but I am newer here!) and it was incredible! Got the Cuban and the chicken sandwich last time! I'm going back this weekend for sure.
Unlike some other places, here I don't care about whether or not this is authentic. The bottom line is, as many others have noted, Paseo makes one of the best sandwiches out there. Especially if you like pork. And not to be overlooked is the fish and rice as well (not a sandwich).
Highly recommended.
When I was in Asia for 6 weeks, this is the thing I missed back home. I missed the succulent pork sandwich more than I missed my mother.
Best flavors ever!
These sandwiches are the most amazing Caribbean sandwiches I've ever had. Wait, make that one of the best sandwiches ever out of any variety! The Cuban with pork is what I would recommend, but it is also divine with chicken.
Make sure to be prepared with napkins when you are eating. Getting a buttery half corn on the cob is a nice touch. The two downers are that the place doesn't accept credit cards and it is also very cramped. The seats they do have are dingy little tables and chairs, but with sandwiches this juicy and mouth-watering, who cares?
A great place to eat with a friend or family. Not a great first date place unless you want to have garlic breath the whole night and risk having juices drip on your face and clothing. A little spendy at $8 per sandwich, but well worth it.
By far, one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. My fiancé and I went for the first time a couple of months ago and even though we had to wait outside in the rain, we didn't mind because the smell coming out of the small shop was so good, I knew it would be worth it.
It's cash only so come prepared. It would be a shame to wait in line, see the delicious sandwiches and then have to find an ATM.
If this rating was just for food, then it's a five (especially for the price). The sandwiches are outstanding; flavorful, well sauced, and filling.
However, in terms of service, I am deducting two stars. Obviously, this is not an expensive sit-down restaurant. But if you eat here, you'll stand on line forever, only for them to run out of bread on you (frankly, a sandwich shop should never run out of bread), run out of the meat you want or certain ingredients like caramelized onions; there's probably no place to sit, and maybe they'll be closed.
For a good sandwich, sure, you might try going to Paseo. But don't count on them having exactly what you want and expect to wait a long time for what they do have. I've been here a dozen times, and have yet to try to midnight cuban because they've always run out.
This is a great sandwich. .Especially with that corn on the side wow...I'm not a corn fan but Paseo made me love corn again. I wouldn't say its an authentic cuban sandwich and I wouldn't say its the best sandwich I have ever had in my lifetime but it was good...it has some really hardcore taste to it. I had to remove the big piece of green on it because I don't like huge lettuce on my burgers or sandwiches.
I went later in the day on a weekend. There was still a small line but not like they have during the week. So the line wasn't bad but no where to sit. So we hoofed it back to a friends work and ate it there. They only take cash so beware!
Hands down the best sandwich I've ever had. Coming from North Carolina I'm very discerning about my pork but I can honestly say no sandwich, pork or any kind, can stand-up to Paseo's roast pork sandwich.
If you see a line, don't let that deter you; it moves relatively fast and only makes you appreciate the sandwich that much more once it finally arrives in your paws. You will crave this sandwich for weeks after tasting and you might as well go ahead and order two...
omg. MUST get the cuban roast. SOOO good. make sure to call ahead to check if they've run out of bread (if they have, don't bother going). many evenings they run out, so just try another day.
What kind of restaurant runs out of food and can't sell what they are known for?
This rating comes from the fact they ran out of sandwiches when I got there so I left immediately without getting anything.
I guess someone there is trying to master a business plan of supply and demand. Maybe they have been doing a study on that online lemonade stand game?
They should concentrate more on customer satisfaction than on that.
I love Paseo! This is THE place to take out-of-towners who don't often visit hole-in-the walls like this one.
The sauce on the sandwiches is delicious and I switch between ordering a salmon sandwich and a chicken sandwich (they have fancier names). The place is crowded from open to close and you have to be skilled to land a table inside. Most people in the neighborhood get the food to go.
It's a cash-only establishment, so make sure to hit the ATM first!
I haven't been to Cuba proper, but I have spent most of my life eating Cuban homecooking and living in Miami.
Paseo makes killer sandwiches and sides, though I would consider them somewhat of a Cuban-Caribbean fusion rather than traditional Cuban. The order-taker didn't understand what I was looking for by medianoche, but the "midnight" was moist and tasty. Not what I was nostalgic for, but it was excellent if not a little better. The beans and rice were also simple and super.
If I had only 15 minutes left to live, I'd drive to Fremont and get a shrimp sandwich from Paseo. Yeah, it's that freaking good.
It starts with a knowing glance, a subtle fluttering of the heart, a coy smile, and a heightening and arousal of the senses. Something familiar yet foreign is in the air. Whether it's a full moon, pheromones, a culmination of pent up yearning or a combination of the three you can't be sure.
Soon conscious control gives way to primal instinct, all social norms and civilities are stripped away and your body takes over. Various contortions and moans break like waves in oceans of ecstasy and carnal pleasure as you lose yourself in the object of your desire. Time stands still throughout, up until the point of climax as your psyche comes gently crashing back to the reality of the world around it.
A gentle caress, playful giggles, and serene tranquility follow. As you drift aimlessly between sleep and wake, you are comforted by the recognition and acknowledgment of the experience and satisfaction. For a brief moment, on this particular day, you were able to unleash that which often lays dormant inside you and reach the depths of the core of your being.
That's what the Midnight Cuban Press at Paseo is like.
Some friends took me here as I was visiting Seattle one weekend. Many people were recommending the place so I had to try it out. It's a very small venue, with maybe just 4 small tables for people who were lucky enough to swoop in on a table as people leave. If you go during rush hour, like lunch, the line goes out the door and along the sidewalk. As you get into the restaurant and closer to the cash register, it gets more cramped as people are lingering around, waiting for their orders.
I got the "most popular" Cuban roast and it was absolutely delicious. The fantastic sauce was just dripping and the sandwich was a large portion for just $8. With the jalapenos, it was the right amount of spice. I am actually craving a sandwich right now. I wonder if it can be shipped....
It's a metal tent with no virtually no seating that serves sausage and onion on a bun style food. They have lottery style parking (1:1000 odds.) A fairly reasonable attitude prevails unless you hesitate with your order. If you don't have cash, you don't eat.
The 2 sandwiches I ate were ... words fail to describe how good they were. I've had almost the whole menu many times and the negative reviews I've seen here represent those opposed to the nomenclature not being authentic for the items served, those expecting the best orgasm ever and only getting a really good sandwich, and grease-haters.
If you expect and want a big, meaty, greasy, grilled-oniony feast that blows away any booth at any state fair with reasonable prices, try to eat here once. You'll make up your mind in one visit.
omg the cuban midnight press....amazing. Unfortunatly I jumped on the Paseo bandwagon a little late but Its truly a most go if you are in fremont. btw I heard a rumor that they were rated number 40 out of 100 for the best places to eat in america.
I came into Paseo with high hopes because my friend was constantly raving about it when I went up to WA to visit friends. I left the place satisfied and happy.
I got the Cuban Roast and it was delicious. The meat was tender and juicy and the bread was crunchy and not too hard. I tried a bite of the Midnight Cuban Press and it was all the more heavenly as well.
The line was very long, esp during peak lunch hours, so come prepared to wait for at least 30 minutes. But it will definitely be worth your wait.
Since there are over 600 reviews, I'll keep it short.
I had the Midnight Cuban Press and the Smokin Thighs Plate!
The flavors on both these dishes are amazing.
Like most other Yelpers here....I can't describe how good the food is.
I mean, c'mon...if 600 reviews don't get your attention...then you should slap yourself....then after you're done slapping yourself go to McDonald's, because you clearly do not deserve PASEO!
Seriously....JUST GO!
Stay Hungry My Friends.
So good, I can't even believe it. Everything I have had there is the best thing I've ever eaten.
Helpful tip for newcomers or people interested in the menu: Come with a second person. Pick 2 tasty sounding sandwiches (I recommend the self proclaimed most popular dishes Cuban Roast and Midnight Cuban Press) and cut them in half. Each person has a half sammich, and you have the pleasure of deciding which one you like the most.
Be warned, they are closed on Mondays and only accept cash. But go there. Go there. Go there!
Tried this place when I was up in Seattle for a couple days, and man, I have nothing but good things to say. I ordered the Midnight Cuban Press (for some I reason called it the "Midnight Cuban Express" as if I was catching a freakin' train to Cuba, lol) and it was delicious. This sandwich is probably one of the best I've ever had: pulled pork marinated in their own sauce, Swiss cheese, a slice of ham on top, and some roasted onions, all in between a six inch baguette. The meal included a half corn cob to top it off. It's A LOT OF PORK, not that it's problem or anything--it's definitely worth the 8 bucks that you pay for. Needless to say, I was stuffed beyond belief, but I still managed to finish my friend's sandwich; I forget what it was called, but I believe it was #2, and that was also delectable.
Luckily, my friends and I got there just in time before the Saturday lunch crowd. By the time we got our order in, there were about 15 people lining up the side of the restaurant. The place is pretty small, and I think only about 15 or so people can be seated. It's definitely not a place for you to chit chat after you eat when it's busy because other people might be waiting. If there aren't any seats available and you order in, the cashier will put your food to the side until a table clears up.
In short, the restaurant lives up to its reputation. I can't wait to have it again in the off chance that I come to Seattle.
This is what I crave when I really want a sandwich, or when I'm sad, tired, or starving. Saucy and spicy, just like my mom's food. Even the veggie sandwiches are delicious.
Yes, they are frequently closed. When they are open, you may have to wait a long long time for your food. But, it's worth it.
The last time I had a Paseo sandwich, my friend had been in labor for 24 hours and was starving. This is what she wanted. Not an epidural, but a Paseo's sandwich.
