I just had my first experience at La Raza today (two rounds) and am able to report that the poison oak is not much of a factor, if you don't go O.B.  La Raza is a more traditional parkland course that Heller. There is not much elevation change and mature trees play a more significant role.

Because of the large number of mature trees you are required to play at least one 'boring' shot on nearly every hole. When I say boring, I mean it both ways. First you must throw a very low straight trajectory shot that bores at least 150-200 ft. through the wind and trees, but this also leads to boring game play. There are only a couple of holes where you can throw high lofted arcing shots (like Hellyer) or have the option to go left or right. No one ever gets very excited about low straight dirt skipping shots, unless you can get off a decent roller. Having to make these shots on nearly every hole feels kinda like disc-bowling. About the only exciting 'boring' shot is on the aptly named "Mandatory Tunnel Hole".

The protected baskets (rocks, overhanging trees, parking lot O.B. and numerous bushes) also put a big emphasis on making longer putts to save par.

The new rubberized launch pads and hole signs are a step up from Hellyer and earn the extra star (to 4). I'd give another half star if there was a tee indicator to tell you whether each basket was at either the A,B or C location, instead of having to guess or spot adjust on the second shot.

This entire course could easily be called "Mandatory Tunnel", as it plays like the anti-Hellyer. If you could somehow combine the best holes on both courses to make one course then it would be 5 star worthy. In the meantime, I'd settle for someone letting me know if there is an easy walking path between the two courses or not.

According to Letty D... if poison oak is in play at La Raza, then it won't rate higher than one star… Read more »

Open your mind and be muse. Especially, when entering into the unforgiven terrain and wilderness known as Parque de la Raza. Immersed in foliage, the course offers up 9 holes of disc golf heaven - or hemorraging, depending on your skill level and focus. A beginner like myself practices the latter; and it wouldn't be too far-fetched for others in my skill range to bring along with them a ladder. Or one of those walking tree creatures from The Lord of the rings; because if you lose one of your PRECIOUS drivers it'll definitely harsh your mellow and leave you powerless.

Conveniently located across the way from Hellyer disc golf course, you can easily hone in on your frisbee tossing skills and throw back a few frosty beverages in the interim.

Viva La Raza!

Now I have been to the Hellyer disc golf course and the Hellyer disc golf course is a great course. I really like the stairs that they recently put in. Parque De la Raza is also great disc golf course to play. The trees definately help make this course challenging. La Raza is not very hilly.  This park also has a bathroom which is convenient. La Raza is a much more difficult course and I like the challenge.

This is a great place to come and play some disc golf. As soon as you arrive you notice ample parking in an official lot, not parked on the side of the road like Hellyer. Bathrooms conviently await you right in a central location. As for the course, it is a bit challenging (which I like) , but there is a lot of poison oak. Unfortunately that's just part of the landscape in this part of California. I've never seen it crowded, unless there is a tournament going on, and everyone I talk to there is pretty cool. All in all a great place to come play for awhile. And as always, please don't litter this place.

Headed down to try this disc golf course and overall enjoyed it! I went on a Saturday afternoon and the course was fairly clear of players. The tees are rubber, the signage is new (& illustrated with fun characters), the holes are pretty challenging. Agreed, this is a course that stresses precision with tight passageways and tucked-away baskets. Yes poison oak is a big hazard here. Also I wish there were an easy way to connect it to the Hellyer course. I wasn't able to find a pathway between the 2 despite them being near each other.

check out http://svdgc.com the Silicon Valley Disc Golf Club. This course tops all the ones I've been to as of yet. Less steeep than Hellyer, but trees and poison oak create for a risky course. 9 holes and minimal wind make it easier for a novice like me. The nest feature are the bathrooms! There's always soap in the women's to wash off that poison oak.

La Raza  is cool little 9 hole course. It is much flatter than Hellyer, and also much less windy. It is usually less crowded than Hellyer, which could be a good thing on those days that you are not in the mood to chat it up with people. It has some nice tight/technical shoots, which is always fun. I prefer the long shoots that hellyer requires though. There is poision oak on just about every hole. I hate poision oak!! If there was no poison oak I would have gave it 4 stars. No concrete pads just rubber mats, which sucks! But all in all in is a nice afternoon little course.Oh and there are bathrooms on site!!!

i rated it the same as SF because the wind at hellyer makes it difficult and the tight shots at la raza are its signature. playing the two courses back to back is truly a great 18 holes with two different aspects to to each course. making you adjust and overcome.
