I've been a customer of this salon for about 5 yrs I think, and seeing Sarah for 4 of those years.  I had been dropping some serious dough at Devachan prior to that, only to come out with highlights that looked like I had done them myself at home (and poorly, I might add).  My friend recommended I come here since the prices were reasonable and they always gave her great highlights.  I have been happy ever since - I've never had a bad haircut and my highlights always look amazing and natural.  The salon is cute and cozy, staff has always been polite and accomodating.

I even entrusted Sarah to do my hair when it came time for my wedding, which says a lot, and it came out exactly as I wanted it.  Love her!

Pay it forward - A friend of mine recommended Parlor to me and I went in for a cut and to have my hair 'helped' back to it's natural color (I don't dye my hair but it was really washed out from the sun and I wanted it evened out - haven't touched it since).  This was nearly two years ago.  The salon itself is small, but has a great lay-out, friendly staff and good music.  I love enjoying a glass of wine, lemon water or Aveda tea while I get my haircut...and it might sound silly, but I love the quote board.

Boswell cuts my hair, and is fantastic.  He is the sweetest and does such a great job. Start to finish, about an hour and really listens to what's working and what isn't.  Has made some great recommendations and has a very good memory.  I've since sent about three friends to him, and several more to Parlor.  I also hear he does a great job on curly hair, as another one of my friends swears by him now.  Prices are about $85 per cut, but worth it.

I also hear that Katja is very good, meticulous with her cuts.  Hayden was wonderful the one time I did have help with my color.  I'd highly recommend it.

Being a 30-year-old male with a receding hairline, I'd long opted for cheap barber buzz-cuts instead of pricier hair-cuts from salons. That all changed when I discovered Parlor. I love everything about it - the bright, airy interior space, the cool refreshments, and the friendly, down-to-earth stylists who are incredibly skilled at their trade. I especially like the focus and attention that Parlor's stylists direct toward men's hair. All men should give Parlor a shot. Yes, it is more expensive than a barbershop, but the caliber of the workmanship at Parlor is prestine. Odds are, you will be happily surprised.

Uhm, I don't think I have ever given a one star review before, and I really thought this one out.  I had my hair cut here mid-August. I tried to like this place and I tried to like my haircut.  It took weeks to grow back to normal,  there are parts that lay flat, and parts that have split ends.  Worst of all, I was getting a trim before an event -  I was thinking of just a blowout, but this place got such great reviews, I decided to get cut.

It was not really a walk in, I stopped in and ask if they had an opening in the next few hours, and if the stylist was available to consult.  The well-groomed gay man said that there was an opening, but that she (the stylist) was not at the salon yet.  Actually, she was right behind him.

An hour or so later, I was shocked to be sitting down with a Caucasian lady who has dred locks (whom I had seen earlier, behind the gay man).   I tend to look at the hair on the person cutting me as an example of their skill and style, I grew up among hippies and moved to NYC to loose this association. But, what I going to do do? This dreddy lady gets high marks here on Yelp and I was dressed and en route to an event.

She talked allot  about her upcoming wedding.  She wore a non-traditional gown, it was a small ceremony. We did not talk about me as much as my usual expensive haircut. Ironically, I was getting primped for an engagement party, for an extremely traditional wedding - the event was at a country club, I made a point of saying it was important that my hair look conservative as my boyfriends' parents would also be in attendance. She cut my bangs really short, like Betty Page.  I had 90's rockabilly hair, at a country club. Seven weeks later my bangs are long enough for a proper side-sweep.

About the product pushing, East Village ladies know our Aveda products, you don't need to arrange them in a basket for me when I go pay.  I like Aveda, but I like to mix it up a little, I was asking my Bob Marley stylist about the Bumble and Bumble hair power (I hear it's amazing) and someone walked up and actually told her to put that "beach hair" stuff on me.  It smelled like pina-colada and did not blend well the melange of odors already in my hair. It also made my hair sticky, not at all country-club clean.

I don't feel right putting her name in the review.  It's a personal taste thing, and some people might like her style. I would have given more stars if the experience was a little better, she did seem rushed (there was someone in my chair by the time I was dressed)  and the product pushing is not cool.  I feel that haircuts in the $100 range should be either amazing or relaxed and ass-kissy, this was neither.

I recently had my curls tended to by Rachel. I'll second the other reviewers who said "the woman has vision" -- I didn't get what I expected, but I LOVE what I did get.

Admittedly, I told her to "do whatever", and she described a cut that would maintain the length but improve the shape.

I took my glasses off (rendering me mostly blind) and could see rather large chunks of hair dropping all around me, which surprised me (and excited me -- I'll be honest). When I put my glasses back on, my hair was WAY shorter than I expected -- but it looked pretty bangin'.

If you are willing to put your trust in your stylist and let go a little (exactly what I wanted) Rachel is the bomb. It was totally worth $98 -- I've had way more expensive cuts that looked minutely different from the amateur hacking I've done on my own locks.

The ONLY reason I gave 4 stars rather than 5 is because I didn't feel like I was totally aware of what I was getting into when she started snipping -- granted, I LOVE it, but if I didn't want to go shorter, I might've been upset.

Love this place! The stylist was professional, friendly, charming, and cut my hair to suit my face. Very nice manager and shop. Looking forward to return visits.

I've deleted my old rave review and am writing a new one. I became very disenchanted with this place over the summer. I had an appointment to go from red to blonde and ran late because the trains weren't running properly, instead of taking two trains, I ended up taking four!

I get off the subway and notice I have a message, it's from Parlor wondering where I am, at this time I'm about 20 minutes late for my apppointment. I call them back and tell them the situation, Gwen the owner tells me to come over anyway. I run in flip flops from 14th street and 1st avenue to the shop on B and 5th. Out of breath I slam into the place, only to be told I was too late to have my hair done.

You made me run all that way to tell me this to my face? Why she didn't have the courtesy to tell me on the phone is beyond me.

I call up later on in the week to talk about rescheduling, and am told by Tina that maybe it would be better if "I found another salon to go to." That completely blew my mind. I've always been either on time or early for my appointments even though Tina never ever runs on time.

In fact, I was so impressed by the salon, that I wrote about them twice!

Egotistical and truthfully, there are much better salons in the city,

I have long, very thick naturally curly hair.  A friend with the same type of hair told me about Parlor when my long-time stylist moved to London, and I am so glad.  Sarah has been cutting my hair for just about a year now and I am so pleased.  I honestly would not go elsewhere.

I love the Aveda products and the salon is bright, clean and cozy.  I can't say enough nice things, and I always tell other naturally curly girls about it when asked-which is a lot!

UPDATE 4/2008:  I cut my curly hair into a bob- and once again, Sarah proved she was magic and made it look great instead of a poufy poodle-head, pyramid mess.  It's so hard to find a place that can give a curly girl an actual hairstyle!  Once again, this salon is the tops to me.  LOVE IT!

I LOVE PARLOR. I'm only giving it four stars because I had to wait for 25 minutes, and the front-desk guy never came over to explain why.

My stylist, Katja, was great, though. She apologized for the wait, and I don't care, because my haircut is AMAZING.

I told her what I wanted, and she offered some suggestions, and we made the final decision together. I loved that she spent a bit of time examining my head (ok, that sounds weird) before she washed my hair.

One thing that was weird was that the stylists don't seem to talk to each other very much, which I'm not used to. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but I noticed it.

I like the Aveda products, and that the stylist tells you what she used. I didn't feel pressured to buy anything, though.

Yay Parlor. The prices are totally affordable, too.

I always receive exemplary service at Parlor.  I have been going to Hayden for over a year and a half for highlights and he is a true artist.  My color is amazing, rich and varied and I get so many compliments on it.  I have just started seeing Katja for haircuts and she totally gets what I want and is able to give it to me.  I got a new cut in time for my birthday and am so pleased how it came out.  This place is reasonable, you get excellent service and they use an outstanding product.  I will be a client for a long time.

Rachel cuts my hair.  I have sent 11 people to her, all repeat customers.  I carry her card around because so many people ask me about my hair.  She's great--if a teeny bit not interested everything you want.  I mean, she listens to you but the woman has vision.  I like that in a stylist but not everybody does.  Again, 11 people, all repeat customers.
But her prices, well they have gone up,100 dollar hair cuts.

I rarely give such poor reviews, but in this case, I felt compelled to share.  The salon really doesn't live up to the image they present on their site.  They employed some pretty hard sell tactics to move their product and the service lacked any evidence of care or interest in the customer.  The stylist bordered on being rude, settling on blunt and matter-of-fact for the rest of the session.  I was just glad to have left when I did.

10 years as an nyc resident; 10 years at parlor. i now live all the way across town - like, near jersey - and i still make the far east trek.
sarah gave me a military cut + died it all blonde when i was 17 [by request], and cut me some nice, professional layers in my au naturale color this jan.
with that kind of history, how could i ever leave?

I don't know what it is about this place, but I've never left truly happy with my hair.  I think I got highlights once, and a cut once or twice, and after that, I gave up.  I wanted to like it but, eh.  I'm sticking with Soon.

I have plain, straight Asian hair. Bettina gave me a short, chunky-banged haircut that gets rave reviews some days but is frustratingly limp on others. Admittedly, I was running late for a flight at JFK and couldn't really elucidate what I wanted. The staff is friendly and the price is right ($50-$115) -- I'd definitely try it again, and bring in photos of what I like this time around. If I could give 3.5 stars, I would.

I have been going to this salon for years. Recently a stylist I really like left and I was forced to try Jay.  Jay did an amazing job on my very curly hair.  The only draw back to this salon would be how much they push products and how often stylists that I like are no longer working at Parlor.

It's hard to make me happy with a first haircut, but I smelled good (Aveda) and walked out curly (rather than a hairdresser-forced blow out) with a haircut that didn't make me anxious, and now Gina is the only person I will let touch my hair.

This place is good for the value.  I've read about this place for years before going.  I had my haircut by Bettina and it cost under $75.  She was attentive and listened to exactly what I wanted.  I have long straight hair and my only complaint was that she didn't give me a very creative haircut.  I wanted to keep the same style which had been growing out for 4 months and I think she gave me a tamer version of the style.  I'm not sure if she was scared of layering too much or what, but it was ok.  I didn't love this place.  In 6 years in NYC, I haven't found a place I love as much as my place in LA (where I still go to get my haircut when I can!).  This place is just as good or BETTER as the places that charge $100-$150 (i.e. armando corral, arrojo studio, oscar bond, cutler...to name a few which I have tried).  I would come back here...although I didn't love it.
