one cannot journey to the PL and leave disappointed. it's just not possible.

you don't come here for the quality of food. but it's cheap (think $2 grilled cheeses) and deliciously greasy. and the people watching is never boring.

to achieve the fullest PL experience, i whole-heartedly recommend ordering an amaretto sour and a tuna melt with fries.

classy.

If you aren't a townie, don't bother. The food isn't very good and the place is packed with people looking at you sideways. I have lived in Newburyport for only a few years but I associate with long time residents so I have ended up at Park Lunch quite a few times. I never go there on my own or with people who aren't long time residents. The pictures of local school teams and banners of colleges local kids attend, says it all. The regulars feel at home here.

The food is mostly fried food or pub food (burgers, chicken fingers, etc.). Some people swear by the pizza, which to me, tastes like it's straight out of a mama celeste box. Most of the food is just okay or not very good, but hey, when it is this cheap, what do you expect?

The best thing about Park Lunch is the price. You can go here with a few bucks and get some hot food. You can buy scratch tickets from the vending machine if you are into that kind of activity. Also, if you're a long time resident, you'll probably see people you know.

The worst part is the food. It's just not very good. The place is also packed most nights and the seats are tight. Hold out for a booth if you can. The service is okay but the waitresses are usually older women who seem irritated that you're ordering food from them.

Two stars.

I've heard people rave about Park Lunch, and have seen the line out the door on busy days, so I finally had to check it out.

This place is kind of a cross between a local diner and a cafeteria that serves beer.  The food is nothing fancy, but it's cheap and might be tasty if you're in the right mood.   On my visit, I got a burger, that was basic but nothing to write home about; my friend got the soup and hot dog and thought they were okay, but nothing that couldn't have been found in the fridge/cupboard at home. We split an order of fries, which were really tasty, but would have been better if our waitress hadn't forgotten to put the order in (the fries arrived after we were done with everything else....kind of a french fry dessert, I guess.)

The restaurant is one open room with tables placed pretty close together, so you'll get to hear the conversation of all your fellow diners. And if you pay attention, you may notice that the couple sitting next to you hasn't said a word their whole meal, because they've been intently listening in on your conversation.  At least that was my experience.

Many people there seemed to know one another, and I guess that and the low prices are the real draws of the place.

One of the best deals in Newburyport and possible Massachusetts.  This local spot host some traditional fair but more than your typical experience!!!! Things like Chicken club, Clam Role and even spaghetti and meatballs.  There is a full bar and two large screen tv's .  Locals pack this place to the gills and I know why.... the food is good and cheep.  My chicken club was fresh, packed with chicken, tomato and bacon on great white bread.  It also came with a plate full of Steak Fries all for $6.95!

Sit at the bar with a few Salts and I can promise you good food and even better conversation!

wow, this is a townie place. it's a local gathering of regular folks who love bar food, watching the game, being with family. it's an old style family restaurant, with tables and little booths on one side, and a bar type area on the other.
this is a place to let it all hang out. come in sweatpants! no makeup! it's cool, no judgement zone.
lots of old drunk people hang out here, and it makes for great people watching. lots of old people and babies.
there are a bunch of college pennants covering the walls, which is fun.

and for the food - a lot of it is pretty mediocre, but the meatball sub and chicken fingers are my favorites. the pizza was probably frozen from a package, as well as the standard items in the food...but no one said this was a fine eating establishment! side note - they always give you frosty beer mugs with your beer.

lines here do get pretty long...and the parking lot is always packed! this place sure knows how to pack it in.

it's so fun to eat here!!!

Great prices and cheap, cold beer, the food was average at best.  Not much flavor, and very plain.  If you do like very plain food, then this is your place.  We did like the atmosphere, and loved the frozen beer mugs.  We would go back for the beer and pizza!

The Park Lunch is the very first restaurant I remember going to when I was about 4 years old. I love everything about the place. The owners are incredible and make you feel so welcome. I had moved away for several years and when I went back, they remembered me! The food was just as good as I remembered. The fried clams are the best around. I live an hour away and don't mind driving specifically for either the Fried Clams or the Open Steak Sandwich and Steak Fries. At lunch time they always have great specials on the board. Love their Quiche! They also make a great pizza. This is a great family restaurant but also a great place to go to watch the Red Sox or Patriots with 2 large screen tv's and full bar.
