The building is wonderful, the neighborhood gorgeous, the selection pretty decent, and the librarians helpful. Plus it is within walking distance so I never have to bother with the crappy parking situation.
However, I'm not a big fan of kids. I think it is vital for kids to read, and most of the parents who bring their children here deserve kudos for encouraging them to. But every time I go there is always at least one out of control tantrum going on. It feels like a daycare during weekday afternoons.
I'm super sad that this branch is closed for 4 months since it is so convenient for me to get to. I can walk there and be there in 15min or drive and be there in five. Book babies is fun for the kids and they have a big room downstairs that fits a lot of babies and their mommies/nannies. At the end of story time they throw a bunch of balls out for the kids to play with which is fun.
I hope that when they re-open they changed the Book Babies time to 10:30 like in other libraries.
Ah! Memories! This is my childhood library. Many happy pictures of the past appear in my mind when I think of it. Glad to discover it is still there. Maybe someday when I am in Denver I will revisit this place of youthful bliss.
Can you tell I was a bookish kid?
I was sitting on the floor, scanning Tintin books, as an 8-year-old girl browsed the nearby shelves. She kept moving closer and closer, and finally whispered to me, "What are those books you're looking at?" And I decided everybody should know about Tintin, so I showed her the books and we laughed at Thomson and Thompson. She decided she'd bring one of the adventures home.
"Do you have any kids?" Sofie asked. "No," I said, "Do you have any brothers or sisters?" "Yes," she said, "I have a brother. He's one minute older than me, we're twins." And she skipped off to find him. On my way out, I saw her sitting on the floor next to her brother, showing him Tintin and Snowy.
Nothing can compare to the Central Library in terms of selection and people watching. But what I love about the Park Hill Branch is the beautiful building, and its wooden shelves full of books. Even more, I love that it's still the kind of library where you can share your favorite books with your neighbors, even if they're strangers.
The only reason this library doesn't get five stars is because of the parking. It's all street parking in the middle of Park Hill and it's directly across from Montview Presbyterian (read: humongo church). So, if there's something happening at the church, forget parking near the library.
That out of the way, this branch is THE place to go if you have kids. Their children's section is great and takes up roughly half the building. The librarians are extremely helpful and personable, and it's never crowded. They do have a smaller section for grownups, but if you're going to browse for yourself, I'd tell you to go to the Central branch or maybe Ross-Cherry Creek.
A few tips:
Single folk, if you're looking for a hottie nanny type girl, I'd suggest popping in here during the day. I don't know what sorts of pickup lines you could use, but it is a nontraditional location for picking up women. Just sayin'.
And, I already mentioned this in another library review, but it bears repeating again: Do your library browsing online and put the books on hold at a branch to be picked up (in my case, I now solely use Park Hill for this such purpose). You're in and out of there in no time (parking notwithstanding), and then you can haul yourself to a coffee shop to relax and read. No need to "excuse me, pardon me" your way through aisles on a hunt for the ever-elusive tome.
This library branch is sooooo cuuuuuute. I'm really impressed by their music collection and they even get the seconds from other branches. I found a Barbara Morgenstern CD (German Technopop) which made my day. Kudos to the Denver Public Library. You guys ROCK.
