Always a good option for a decently priced, clean and friendly location-friendly spot in Portland.
Staff at the front desk was nice, but they seemed a bit overwhelmed..maybe it was the slow economy and they had to cut back on staff? They seem to all wear a lot of hats but handled it well.
Its more 3 1/2...but I'll round up to 4 this time because of the friendly front desk and bell desk staff.
I would give this hotel four stars, but our toilet caused us some problems during our stay, so I can't. The chain kept breaking and my boyfriend had to keep reaching down into the water in the back to reconnect it whenever it fell off.
Besides that small misstep though, this place was really very comfortable. You absolutely MUST use Priceline though. We got two nights here for $50/night and it was definitely worth that crazy-low price. We had a corner room that was HUGE and quiet. We could walk to absolutely everything downtown from our hotel and catch the streetcar just a block away.
Also, forget about the valet parking. We parked our car for two nights and two and half days in a nearby garage (nearby meaning a block away) and paid only $19 total!
All in all, I think staying at the Paramount made our stay in Portland really enjoyable. Yes, it could have been a little cleaner, but it was better than our experience at the Vintage Plaza a week later, and that place is supposed to be fancier.
My husband and I stayed one night at the Paramount and drove away glad that it was only one night. While the location was nice and the lobby quite posh, the room was dismal to say the least. The carpet was dirty and the armchair looked like an angry cat had had its way with it. The sushi restaurant downstairs had 'happy hour' with half priced rolls that turned out to be terrible, pre-made monstrosities.
I booked this hotel via priceline, thinking it was a four-star, but it's really only three star at best. Caveat emptor!
Clean and quiet room with a comfy bed. Upon arriving in our room, my paranoid sister and I did a thorough bed bug check for blood spots and bug poop on our mattress; the Paramount passed. Huzzah!
We got a good deal on Priceline for $60 a night. My only complaints were the charging for WiFi and crazy price for parking in their garage. These cheap girls parked on the street at night for free.
Solid 3 star hotel.
This hotel has a great location near many boutiques and shops and eateries. Downtown Portland is relatively small and you can explore the city in which sights and sounds are within walking distance. This hotel has a contemporary lobby, clean rooms, and somewhat friendly staff. I'm used to all employees saying hi to me (ie bellhop, valet, etc.), but only the front desk lady greeted me. Oh well.
I received a King room from Priceline, but they told me it would be an extra $20 for a double, which I found a little outrageous especially since rooms booked online through their website showed a King and Double room to be the same price. All the other hotels I've ever stayed at gladly changed our request if they had it available with no charge. Sometimes even upgraded us with no charge! This was the only drawback though.
This boutique hotel is located perfectly in downtown Portland, close to stores and restautrants.. Rooms are comfortable and furnishings are fairly up-dated.
Lobby is warm and inviting......Starbucks is right next door...
This is the hotel to stay at if you want to be right downtown.
We came to Portland to shop. We needed to have two queen sized beds. Most hotels only have two doubles so this was a major plus. We were able to get very affordable room at the Paramount.
The hotel is located right behind Nordstroms so you are really in the heart of it all. If you valet park with them you can take your car in and out as much as you want for their daily rate.
The staff was very helpful. We will definitely stay at the Paramount again when we need to do some shopping!
Headed down to PDX for their Jingle Bell Run this weekend, and needed a place to sleep.
I got a fabulous deal through this hotel for one of their executive level rooms. Discounted rate, bunch of fun trinkets and coupons for shopping around town, free parking, and the executive upgrade.
Don and I got a corner room, which I'm glad we did. Away from the elevator, up on the 14th floor (there are only 15), and clearly the best feature, the jetted bath tub. We weren't in the room more than a few minutes and I was in that baby!
The heat system was a little funky. It went from hot to cold, there was no in between with this place. We alternated between throwing the blankets across the damn room and fighting for more all night. Led to a little bit of a poor night's sleep...which kind of sucks considering we were sleeping up to run 5k first thing in the morning.
The valet service upon arrival was slow. They were dealing with some big groups (they kept asking us all weekend if we were with this group or that) and we had to circle the block a few times before we could actually check in. Not all the valets can drive a stick shift either, and my Honda has what most people consider a 'loose clutch'. No harm, no foul, just meant longer waits to retrieve car, etc.
The room was nice. I didn't expect the Taj Mahal and had read the reviews before arrival. But I also don't stay in hotels a whole heck of a lot, so I was pleased. The views of the city weren't too bad from our standpoint...although facing towards the water might have been nicer.
The staff here is very good, IMO. I called ahead to settle up a few details and requests (like a late check out in case of after run bath soak and nap, etc) and they were very helpful and nice.
I purposely left my cigarettes in the car to remove the temptation, but did go out to have one in the morning.
I ran around the block 9 times as my run warm-up and to acclimate to the weather (and decide the number of layers I'd be OK running in) while the valet brought the car around. He laughed at his nonstick shift driving coworker for having him actually get the car, instead of just the smokes for me.
The water pressure up on the 14th floor leaves a little to be desired. You're in for a wait to fill that tub up just to the level necessary to use the jets, and won't get a massaging shower out of it, but still good all around.
They pay attention to little details. Even the toilet paper end was folded all fancy when we arrived. It does help keep up the 'fancy' feel they are going for.
Overall, for proximity to race start, deal on rates, friendly staff, comfy bed and did I mention that jetted bath tub, I really enjoyed our stay at the Paramount, and would consider it for future PDX visits.
Pricelined for a very nice price...$50 a night. Great deal on a great hotel. The staff was uber-friendly and eager to help. The location is really great- close to shops et al. I love coming to PDX and staying here furthered my love. Great price, good service, nice room- what's not to love? Oh yeah, parking. Well, it'd be nice if they had underground parking- but they don't. Not to worry- you can valet for $28, which is a little spendy- or you can definitely find street parking. Stayed over the weekend and had no troubles finding parking on the block. Fees apply on Saturday from 8-7 pm- but, I wasn't too concerned with it- beats paying for a parking garage.
I wish we could give this hotel 3 1/2 stars...but since we must stick with whole numbers, 3 it is. The hotel is in a TERRIFIC location. If you want to be right downtown in a comfortable, clean and friendly hotel, this is the place for you. The rooms are very big and well decorated, the beds are comfy, the views are great. The only downside is that the entire hotel smells like the Dragonfish which is the restaurant located off the lobby downstairs. As soon as you walk out of your room (and we were on the 8th floor) the smell hits you. We ate at the Dragonfish, the food isn't bad, but smelling the Asian Cafe morning, noon and night was a little off-putting. Other than that,we had no complaints, and to be honest we would stay here again despite the restaurant funk.
Couldn't really complain about a single thing. $111 a night for a room for 4 people (double queen), clean, fancy-looking... what else could you ask for? There's a small workout room downstairs. The only downside was that valet parking at $28 a night, but we used the smart park just a couple blocks away (only a few dollars/day).
There's nothing thats really negative about this hotel. Really I can't say anything.
I am just used to fabulous hotels and luxurious amenities. This was not that.
The lobby is lovely, the sushi bar was decadent, but once you enter the elevator the atmosphere turns to average. I understand that it is an older hotel, that has been renovated, but more could have been done to improve its interior and rooms.
The rooms are spacious, but nothing to write home about. The decor is bland, the tv's are older and slow to flip channels. They are basic rooms. Although their mattresses were firm and really enjoyed them. I did hear they were brand new as of April '08.
The bathroom was not EXTREMELY clean. Nothing that negative, just not perfectly spic and span. They do need to update their shower heads, talk about circa "1980".
The Gym is small, but has some newer equipment, its just fine if you want to squeeze a run in during your trip.
The staff were very helpful and always had wonderful tips for dinner and activities.
The location was ideal and very close to the MAX line. Which is essential in Portland and FREE.
Overall it was average. Which is fine, it gets the job done, just not my style.
Better than Bar food. We recommend the Salmon Katsu & Dragonfish salad. Happy Hour prices, so cheap. Don't fall for the small portion thing though and order a bunch unless you are a big eater.
I stay here when I travel to Portland for business, 'cause it's only a block away from my office.
But I'm fed up. The next time I go up there, I'll stay at the Hilton (also close), or anywhere but here.
Room service takes FOREVER. Even picking up at the restaurant downstairs takes 20 minutes. The worst part is that they don't tell you it takes 20. They tell you "oh come back in 10 minutes". Then you show up and wait around for another 10 as they slowly get their act together. Infuriating!
However, one of the doormen has always been really helpful. Their only saving grace - OK, maybe not quite "saving" enough.
"Location, Location, Location...of your room, that is."
I was in Portland for a wedding, and the Paramount Hotel was the recommended stay for those who wanted to remain downtown. The wedding party had special group rates, and therefore, the bottom of the barrel room choices. Too bad, because the location of a room counts for 50%+ of the enjoyment factor of a hotel stay. Are you near a well-traveled, noisy elevator? Are you low enough to hear street or lobby noise? Do you have a view of the ugly ass of other neighboring buildings? Or, like Jane and I, all of the above. So, if you're planning to stay at the Paramount Hotel, then do yourself a favor and:
1. Insure that your room is at least 4+ floors up.
2. Make sure that your room is facing the city and the street, or high enough to view the river.
3. Ask for your room to be toward the far half of any hall.
Unlike us, the bride and groom had an amazing room that fit those 3 items, AND they had a private balcony. When I walked into the bride's room, my entire mood changed as if a dark and gloomy day had suddenly turned to spring. The hum in my head of dull industrial motors vanished, and I'd swear that I heard birds chirping when I entered her light filled room. Even her white drapes were lightly flapping, just like they would in a slow motion TV commercial for a perfume ad. And the view of the city was fantastic. That's what I'm talkin' about. A voyeuristic view to watch the "foreign" people walking around in their day-to-day routine as you check out what they wear, and where they shop. Basically, you want to build the excitement to dive out of the hotel and swim in with the school of local fish. And, given that Portland is like a sculpture, whereby each beautiful view depends upon your perspective, it would have been nice to have had a view better than the ASS of other buildings...O.K. So I'm a bit peeved about that.
Frankly, the Paramount has a lot of good things going for it including the fact that the infamous Powell's Books is within walking distance. But there are a lot of "ifs" here. The service is decent if the place isn't packed. The rooms are above average if everything works...but I can't help to notice the range of other reviews for the Paramount. All I can say is that the difference between the gray of winter and the color of spring is defined by location, location, location. Insist for a Non-Ass-View room.
This is a good little hotel. Although, the valet guys have better recommendations for where to eat and drink than the concierge, so take that into consideration. Overall, fair price for the location and services provided. We had no complaints about our room or quality of the hotel. Although, we will definitely have to go back to try the happy hour in the Dragonfish ($1.95 sushi from 4-6 and 10pm on). I would stay here again.
Nice. Comfy beds. Good atmosphere, good bath products, good view. We especially enjoyed being able to fill out a card on what we wanted for breakfast from the Dragonfish downstairs and hung it on our doorknob, to be awakened by hot breakfast the next morning. Good location too, easy walk to lots of downtown stuff and good bars/restaurants.
We got off to a bad start here. I had booked what I thought was 2 Queens on the website (we had some friends planning to crash with us), but upon checking we got assigned a single King. They said that booking online only guantees you a room, not a choice of bed. WTF? If I had known that, I wouldn't have booked here. The did apologize for the mishap and rolled in a single bed, which is better than the floor I guess. Then I found out Internet access from the room is an additional $10/day. Their advertised "complimentary" Internet access means sharing 2 computers in the lower lobby, which are slow as hell and don't even have Acrobat reader installed. The fitness center is just a couple treadmills and a universal gym. We didn't have the most sound sleep, and had problems getting the A/C system to make up its mind, and there was also a constant whistling, I'm thinking due to the huge hole across the street.
About the only good thing was the free breakfast the next morning. Supposedly it was only good for continental served in the dining room, but the waitress said applying it towards anything on the menu and bringing it up to the room would be no problem. We did have a maid knocking on our door at noon sharp kicking us out of the room, though.
I suppose it could have been worse, but not by much. There's lots of hotels for the same price range located within a few blocks, and I think any of them would be better choices than the Paramount..
The lobby is beautiful and the rooms and bathrooms are spacious. But the fan in the bathroom didn't work. The heater in our room didn't work either. We paid $10 per day for wireless internet. The bed wasn't very comfortable--my partner barely slept through the night. We had to call housekeeping for maid service. The fitness center has great new machines, but it was too hot. I will not stay at the Paramount again.
I thought this place was more of a botique hotel however, the room we stayed in was nice but nothing special. It was very clean. The staff was very helpful.
good enough. we got a great price on the executive suite ($136/night). that bathtub was worth it. looking out the window at the construction accross the street made me feel like i was staying at ground zero. who knew portlandian construction is done on saturdays. the doorman seemed a little spacey. the front desk staff were nice enough. nice firm bed. pillows were lumpy. the tv checkout didn't work. clean room. clean hotel. met our needs. sorry - can't gush.
