My grandma raised me to send cards for every holiday, to always attach a card to any gift of any size, and to send a thank you note to anybody who so much as looks at me.
So card shops are pretty essential for me.
And I've been buying cards here for about a year, mainly because it's a few blocks from my office and I can pick up something on my lunch break. Their cards are a little fussy for my taste, but they're clearly not from a drug store, which is all I really want.
Today, though, I went in to grab a few cards for birthdays, Easter, an anniversary... it's amazing how one birthday can turn into six or seven cards.
I bring my lovely stack to the register, and the girl ringing me up asks if I'm in their club. I forget what she called it, but it's one of those deals where they sign you up and you get free stuff in exchange for letting them spam you to death. Maybe it's financially stupid, but I never join those things. Nice register lady let it go, but then another lady, who seemed to be in charge, came over.
She asked me if I was in the club as well, and I told her I was not. She stared at me for a second, contempt all over her face, and said, "Do you know you could have gotten two free cards today?". I just smiled at her. Even if I had wanted to join this thing, I had two more stops to make before I even got to the lunch part of my lunch break. But I didn't feel the need to explain myself to this woman, who was looking at me with intense dislike. And who proceeded to turn to a man, who seemed to be sorting receipts, and say, "That's crazy. She's crazy."
Um, hey, Bitch? You're standing about three feet away from me. I can hear you. And now I'm really glad I didn't join your goddamn card cult, because I'm taking my stationary obsession to Crane.
I am so not about cards with fabric butterflies on them and a shoe made out of ceramic super glued to a plain white card that's blank inside. But Papyrus is just hard to resist... it has all the things you don't need to send someone a card to say hey - but has everything you need to send a card to someone to say hey! and 'I don't mind spending $9.43 on one card for you!'
The reason this Papyrus gets 3 stars is because they have sales sometimes that bring the prices down to normal and it's a great place to buy gifts for the the kind of people that are ridiculously hard to buy things for - namely your rich friends who already have everything so you buy them picture frames (insert picture of you two getting drunk together), or journals, or stationary.
I think the bigger Papyrus stores in the city might deserve more than 3 stars - but really, you could also just go to Flax (on Market and Valencia) and make the same card for a few bucks less.

I have never in my life been treated as poorly as the day I set foot at this particular location. While shopping for cards the manager stood next to me the entire time watching my every move. After she was done "organizing" the cards she then leaned against the wall, folded her arms and just starred at me. Not once did she ask if I needed any help, just starred. It was so uncomfortable that I left the store and called Papyrus corporate to voice a complaint. The CSR manager apologized and stated that she would have the regional manager call me in regards to the incident. That call never came and I can asure you that I will by my cards from independents from now on.

Papyrus came to my aid in my hour of need! I am a procrastinator extraordinaire, and I waited until the last possible minute to order the invites for my recent engagement party. I was terrified that I'd face enormous rush fees, etc. Not to worry. Papyrus stocks a delicious assortment of every type of card and invite that you can imagine, all custom printed within 24 hours. Granted, there are some limits on colors, styles, etc, but there was plenty of selection to meet my needs. The staff knowledgeably assisted with the proper wording and layout. The proof was faxed to my office the next day and the final product ready shortly thereafter. No rush fees! They even included a Papyrus discount card.
I love giving and receiving...cards. I love the feeling of giving someone a completely appropriate card that they might actually save. Papyrus makes finding good cards easy - forget Safeway and Hallmark. For beautiful handcrafted cards go to Papyrus.
The cards aren't cheap but when you get a call from your Mom saying how much she loved the card and how it's now in a scrapbook it's worth it. If you join the Perfect Card Rewards Program for $10 every time you buy any three greeting cards, you get one free. I stock up to avoid scrambling.

Even though I did not find the photo album card that I was looking for, I give this place 5 stars for the service. The woman there gave me so many options and showed me around the store. Very friendly and helpful! I will be back!
This store is smaller than the Embarcadero one but they do have a lot of merchandise. It's near my work place so I can just pop in and buy something (not cards, because I make my own -- said w/ the superior air that Martha S. approves --Ha!).
Right now, they're discounting all their xmas ornaments for 50% off. I found a nice cheap beautiful ornament to give to a co-worker. Great place for last minute gifts when you don't feel the need to hike to Embarcadero!
Even *closer* to the bart/muni station than the Papyrus in embarc 2 - this is the PERFECT place to stop on your way to an event to buy something "thoughtful" plus the taxis are crazy easy to catch on Pine if you are heading west... keep in mind - the prices are crazy high, you'll probably get a better deal with the packaged cards than the individual ones... think ahead and buy a bunch - you won't be sorry!
