Loved the clams, haddock, pies, beers and everything else they had. Ask for their fried corn. It's delicious.

Papa J, I've never met you. But goodness gracious do believe me when I say I love you!

My friend and I had only one mission in Belfast, Maine. EAT! We were staying over at the cute inn next door and were quite excited to see a restaurant next door. No driving necessary! We hit up the place around 4 PM. Unfortunately, we reached a door with a sign that said "CLOSED." You read that right. The place opens from 5PM to close. Two people of the staff  were taking a smoke when we reached the door. They saw the disappointment in our faces when we realized Papa J's won't be open for another hour.

"Head on in, gals. I'll fix you a drink." =D  Yipee!

The inside felt like home away from home, for the locals. We were just intrigued. We had a great time just chatting with the staff. "New York Citay!?" was the reaction we got, lol. Got some fresh oysters to accompany our Bar Harbor beer. Got some chowdah, too.  We had a blast. And this was before the place even opened!

Later on we ordered the steamers and 1.5 lb lobster that came with fries and deep fried corn. Oh yeah. This is what we came for. The steamers was just delicious. OMG the lobster...so juicy and meaty. If only my tummy could fit more. Might I add how CHEAP and FRESH seafood is up here? Everything we ate here was absolutely delish. Seafood, seafood, seafood!

We ate, drank, chatted with the locals and ended up staying til well over 10 PM. Great memories. If you do pass by this town, you must make a stop here. I'm coming back.

A great little funky shack with an eclectic, quality menu.  Lobster was fresh and fantastic. Deep fried corn not so.  If you value a down-home, casual atmosphere and food made with love, then hit up this joint.

I enjoyed this place, the food was good, the staff was helpful and it just felt like a local place to eat. We had the lobster which was excellent.

What to do in Maine when it rains on the coastal plain?  Trot next door to Papa J's & The Lobster Bar.  I'm so excited about this place I don't even know where to begin!

Day 1:  After driving up from Boston in our rented go cart (seriously, don't go with the economy car) we were too pooped to drive 45 minutes to Lobsterfest.  We opted to walk over to Papa J's and relax with some seafood and beers.  How were we to know it would be such a fantastic experience?  Don't be fooled by the rough exterior, this place is a gem!  I had a superb Malbec to start & the BF had a local Belfast brew as we dove into a huge bowl of mussels.  So fresh, no grit, tons of garlic and bread to sop up the sauce.  Chef comes out and says, "Oh yeah, we just got those out of the water about 3 hours ago.  If you look out the window you can see the platform."  Perfect!

I was pretty full after the mussels, but wanted to try the seared scallop appetizer, with even more garlic and the BF had one of the nightly specials:  The Portuguese Steak - A huge plate of fries with a ribeye on top with a fried egg on top of that.  He ate the whole thing!  It was "Over the Top".

Day 2:  We made it to Lobsterfest, but were determined to get some pie for dessert.  Where do we wind up?  Papa J's, that's right!  Two huge slices of homemade raspberry pie with a flaky crust.  Sooooo good.  It was delish, not too sweet so you could still taste the tartness of the berries.

Day 3:  Our last night in Maine and we wanted to have a nice dinner.  Several people made recommendations, but we headed straight back to Papa J's.  We sat at the bar and were treated like regulars.  Red Sox game on the TV, locals in the corner, Margarita's on special.  I was tempted to get the mussels again because they were so yummy, but the BF and I both ordered the Baked Haddock with cucumber-dill sauce.  When the plate first came out, I kinda thought it was too much sauce, but after one bite I was sold.  I wanted a bowl of the stuff to drink!  Red bliss mashed potatoes and fresh broccoli in a lemon butter sauce were perfect compliments to the fish.  We ended that night with the Chef's special shot -The Cocolocorita - bought by one of the locals.  I don't remember much after that because I was transported to gastronomic heaven.

Dining at Papa J.'s is like having your favorite uncle own a bar that also serves up delicious gourmet seafood with a southern flair.  Kelly and the rest of the staff were amazing.  This place could be your only reason for heading to Belfast and you would never regret it.  It's been a week now and I'm still so spoiled that nothing satisfies.

Wonder how long it will take to come down from my Papa J.'s high?

The BF says he owes a drink to the guy who bought us shots.

Papa J's was fantastic!  So good that my husband and I ate there twice!  We met the owner and head chef-Jim.  A really nice down to earth guy.  He suggested wine for us and made us feel so welcome.  It doesn't look like much from the outside but once you get inside there are fun music & sports memorabilia ALL over the walls and ceiling.  My husband talked Redsox with the owner...all was good.  The first night I had a lobster, salad and the fried corn on the cob.  All delicious.  Jim came out and got all of the lobster meat out of the body for me because I had no idea how!  My husband had the Portuguese steak special with the fried egg on the top.  We shared and it was delicious!  We went traveling for a week and on our way back through Belfast we stopped again!  This time we both had the Portuguese steak because it was so good the first time around.  Our waitress both times was Shannon.  She was very sweet and honest about her favorite dishes.  We are from California and are spoiled by some fantastic restaurants here.  I told Jim that his restaurant out does all of the fancy places we have ever eaten in Napa!  I sincerely meant that.  It was very high end for a very good deal.  We were shocked at how inexpensive our meals were, considering what we ordered.  We would go back to Papa J's in a heartbeat if we are ever back in Maine!
