The food and service at this place sucks!!! The dude didn't even get up from reading his newspaper to take my order then he stood up for 2 seconds to steal my money.... $11.75 for a very average 12" cheese steak with mini-fries and drink. You can get this type of sandwich at the mall and wtf... the cheese steak sandwich had iceberg lettuce on it and the bread was extra crunchy and stale. Meat was low quality and had fat pieces. Stay away from Papa Jake's

Visited Papa Jakes for the first time last Friday night after a friend and I were unable to get tickets to the Sex and City movie :(
Papa Jakes ended being a small bright spot for the evening. I was feeling rather carnivorous and had the meatball and cheese sandwich. It was delish! The bread was warm and toasty. The meatballs were juicy and seasoned and cooked perfectly. And the finishing touch, it wasn't completely overloaded with sauce! One of my pet peeves when I have this type of sandwich is that they give you a weee bit of meat and overload it with not so tasty sauce. This was not the case. The sauce was perfect, ever so slightly spicy and just enough to coat the meat and soften the bread. They serve the sandwich with a generous serving of super yummy fresh cut "shoestring" type fries dusted with season salt. Just perfect! Add a drink and you have a hearty dinner for under $9. A rarity in Beverly Hills!
I would definitely return to try some of their other tasty sounding sandwiches!
Honestly, it was half-decent, and the sandwich was like 7.5 inches long. Barely any meat or cheese or peppers or anything really. Bread was insubstantial. Taste was ok, savory and meaty enough.
Overall - Weak.
Then again, I won't complain, it's in the middle of Beverly Hills, so three stars for decent effort.
I miss Philly.
Not the best, but definitely not the worst. I wouldn't go outta my way to roll over there, but if I'm a lil'hungry right, and I'm passin by, I'ma get me a sammich. Everytime I've been(3x) the people have been nice. Quick service. Not the cheapest sammich on the planet, but you're payin for location as well, nah mean. Fries are weak. Kinda like In & Out's fries. Short shitty lil'things.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm stickin to it, wahoo!!!
I must love y'all ... my fellow Yelpers. If I didn't, I'd keep my trap shut about this place so not to risk that it will be overtaken by the masses. I've got a deal for you ... promise me y'all won't crowd it too much and I'll tell you how fab it is.
Deal? Okay ... here goes then ...
Papa Jake's is an authentic sandwich shop with hearty and delish treats ... tucked away in Bev Hills of all places. We got there at about 1pm today and beat the lunch rush ... the menu has a fair amount of selections, but the reason to go is for the steak sandwiches.
My husband had one and thought it rocked ... I had to sample and my own opinion was that it was, without a doubt, the best steak sandwich I'd ever had ... and I grew up a stone's throw from Philly. I opted for the Special Italian and it was amazing ... it had some special concoction of peppers and onions on the top that just made it explode in my mouth. It was THAT good. I swear it was like the subs I used to get when I was a kid in Jersey. The menu says that Jake gets his dough from Atlantic City ... Badda Bing!
We can't forget to talk about the fries ...they were less like your typical fries and more like pomme frites. YUM-E! Just the right thickness and lush with salt. Way to go, Jake!
Now we had a deal, right ... I'd tell you the honest to God truth about how good it was and you'd promise not to crowd the place too much. :) Awww ... what the heck ... support Papa Jake and his awesome sandwiches ... just make room for me at the counter!

Exceptional cheesesteaks, with freshly baked bread and delicious sweet peppers.
The only downside? Their crazy hours -- they close before dinner. Very shortsighted of them. And they don't deliver all the time they're open, either.
If you can manage to live with their customer-unfriendly hours and delivery policy, and get one of their cheesesteaks, you'll be in heaven. It is hands down the best in LA.
Papa Jake's is a little-known place in BH.
You haven't tried LA-style Philly-style cheesesteak sandwiches unless you've been to Papa Jake's.
Go for the cheesesteak sandwich with whatever toppings you want, and get the hot and sweet peppers on the side so you can regulate the flavors... me personally, I don't like the sweet peppers (but the hawt peppers kick ass).
Since I try to cut down my red meat whenever possible, I usually opt for the chicken cordon bleu, or the chicken Christine.
"Jake" is a pretty cool guy and is usually not far from the restaurant.
Another nice thing... plenty of parking in the surrounding area

A Manhattan Beach establishment finally hits L.A. proper.
The cheesesteaks are great (is there any better in L.A.), and the skinny garlic fries are the perfect way to top off a delicious sambo.
If you haven't had a Papa Jake's sandwich yet, do yourself a favor and drop in for some goodness.

Papa Jake's is a rare beachy treat for those of us stuck in the Beverly Hills area, where medicore salads and wraps are everywhere, literally. I had a Chinese Chicken Salad ask me for directions the other day. Alright, maybe not but it sure seems like it with all of the excess lettuce in this fricken city.
You go into Papa Jake's and there's a line of people, hungry for some gritty steak and cheese and peppers and mushroom. I highly recommend trying a steak and cheese before deviating to the other menu items, but if you arent feeling that peckish, the burgers are great too. Like my recent "review of the day" In-N-Out Burger, Papa Jake's rocks the skinny fries which are tasty, but again, I wish they had fat fries so I can just smother them in ketchup and absorb them easier.
Jake himself, unlike most Beverly Hills restaurants, works in the place that bears his name and he is really cool and knows a ton about music.
The one thing I've found in Papa Jake's that doesn't work is the attitude that comes with Beverly Hills. People who think they're great because of who they work for/with/under etc. will get the same treatment as the people who look like slobs who might have had to work hard to pay for their food. Which, by the way, isn't cheap, but it's better than some other sub shops that charge $11 for a sub that doesn't make you happy.
Give it a try and support local business that's actually run by the guy it's named after.

These are pretty darn good, but I must say, South Street in Westwood takes first place.
