Delicious meals and desserts. Fantastic drinks.
The best gourmet Club Sandwich of all time. This thing is turkey and bacon and blue cheese and avocado served on focaccia bread. I wish I had one right now!
And the desserts..it seems like I must have tried them all by now. But I keep picking new ones and loving them. It makes it very hard to make a decision when you are in here. After much thought and consideration though, I think I have to give best one to the lemon cake. Drizzled with raspberry sauce.
If you like lemon, you can't go wrong with this one.
Promise me you'll get this when you go. -

Why oh why do we not have a place like this in LA!
My husband and I were in Portland for the weekend and had heard great things about this place from friends and reviews. It's such an awesome concept. A restaurant dedicated solely to desserts! And not just any desserts...rich, decadent, delicious, mouth-watering desserts. I ordered the baked alaska, which was very good, but my fave was my husband's velvet gianduja! Heaven on earth! I would definitely get that if I was fortunate to come back here.
We were with another couple who graciously let me try theirs as well. I believe the chocolate truffle and another cake with chocolate ganache. So delicious!
The restaurant was decorated very nicely, dimly lit, and in a great part of town. Wish I could go back for more. Papa Haydn, please bring your delicious treats down to LA! -

Friday night, touch down at PDX around 11:20pm.. Disembark with my travel-friendly large Rickshaw messenger bag and head to meet my family on the "departure" level, which by the way is the best trick for no hassle at the airport. Perfect timing. I'm barely on the deck for more than 3 minutes and away we go. Apparently, the plan is to go grab a late-night dessert and coffee. My two favorites. Yum!! I'm game.
By time we arrive at Papa Haydn's, it's close to midnight, if not already midnight. However, the relaxed greeting received from the host doesn't give any such indication. In fact, I lost all concept of time. Not one person made us feel rushed in that "it's time to close" sort of way.
We sit down and order coffee and tea and start perusing the dessert menu. WOW! What dessert can't you get here? I had no clue what a surprise i was in store for. In truth, i thought the selection would be minimal, at best. So wrong i was (happily so).
Following a trusted lead, I order the lemon curd tart with shortbread crust, meringue topping and raspberry sauce. Not too tart, not too sweet - just creamy lemony perfection with a thick shortbread crust of buttery melt-in-your mouth, double goodness. Heaven!!
As we leave, I realize there is no one left but us. I am immediately transported back to the reality of time. We hit the cold, crisp, late night night air and quiet street. Damn , it felt good to be in Portland.
Thank you Papa Haydn for your welcoming hospitality and superbly crafted desserts. I will be visiting you on my next trip. Im putting the baked pear bread pudding with cream anglaise onto my list of "must-try". Hmm, or, maybe the baked Alaska. Hmmm - so much to consider Lol See you in June. :) -

Stopped here for a bite of dessert on the recommendation of a friend. It was so packed on a busy friday night, that I almost was unable to get anywhere near the front counter to get a to-go order. Wow people, really? Can you que, or shall we just all bunch together and hover like we're trying to order drinks from a surly bartender at a dive bar?
Beyond that irritation, I saw what the fire sale behavior was about when I eyed the dessert case. Ok, this looked drool-worthy. As the heard thinned, I was able to procure my sought-after prize: pistachio macaroons.
Yes, they were spectacular, and all I had wanted in a bite-sized pillow of pistachio. So good, they make you want to slap your momma. But, I didn't. I turned around and shared my treasure with her. -

Papa Haydn,
If I could give you more stars I would!!!
The interior is beautiful with a little bit of a Victorian flair...
The service here just gets better everytime I go in. Our host and waitress were superb! I will have to figure out their names, but I requested a candle for a birthday dessert, they went above and beyond~!!!
The vanilla soy latte here is another thing that keeps me coming back... So delicious!!!
The berry cobbler, Baked Alaska and seriously everything I've had left me wanting seconds (no, I didn't have all these in one visit :P )
But of the many visits, I've managed to try something new and have always been fully satisfied. -

We went here for lunch and that was okay, but the dessert was so fabulous! We got a toffee cheesecake. I dream about it still. I might even bite the bullet and get our wedding cake from here!

Great place, great atmosphere. I am a regular here visiting almost every week.
Love their winter special apple cider with rum, they also make good Spanish coffee. Love the wood burning fire place and cozy atmosphere. AMAZING deserts!!! They also serve a good Sunday brunch.
Friendly service staff! -

Wow, AMAZING food. All of the food was absolutely perfect. I went for brunch and had the Croque Monsieur, with a very tasty dressed cucumber salad, and a hot apple cider drink with whiskey, and an order of scones. Absolute perfection for all.
This was my first experience at Papa Haydn, and I will say that I was a bit disappointed, as they seemed to be out of everything. I wanted the biscuits and gravy, they were out of that. Then I decided to go with a sandwich and wanted to taste the soup of the day, they were out of that. Then I ordered a hot butter rum drink, which was their advertised special, and they were out of that for god's sake.
It seems that such an established place would be more prepared for a Sunday brunch rush. Therefore I am deducting one star. -

I enjoyed this spot. My only complaint is that the tables are too Close for comfort. I couldn't help over hearing all the conversations around me.
My husband had the braised pork and pasta. He enjoyed it. I just had the chicken Caesar salad which was also good. We also had the scallops to start. Very different but good. I did send them back to be cooked more. The waiter was superb! He could tell I wasn't happy with the scallops. The waiter insisted he fix the problem. Double thumbs up for service.
This place is known for their desserts. Well worth the trip for dessert alone. I love cheesecake and decided to give it a whirl. It was excellent.
Overall, I like this place. I'll go back...just for dessert. -

After a pretty filling meal at a different restaurant, I didn't really have room for dessert. Since everyone else in my group picked something up, I figured that I'd better get SOMETHING or I would later suffer big time dessert envy. So, I went for the smallest dessert there- the macaron.
They had about 6 different flavors available, all very tempting; pistachio, salted caramel, pomegranate, espresso, and a few others. I opted for espresso. It honestly looked pretty unimpressive. I was expecting your run of the mill wafer sandwich cookie, but wow! I really underestimated the power of a one little macaroon. The outer layer was fresh and flakey and crumbled perfectly as I bit into it. The inside was pure heaven- gooey, creamy and sweet with just a scoach of bitter. -

OH MY GOODNESS!!! where to start? we came here for dinner but stayed for dessert. I ordered the steak, medium rare and my bf ordered the venison. It is cooked to perfection! every bite was just a delight! the place is perfect for first dates and romantic dinners. Moderately priced.
i did notice though, that the adjoining restaurant is warmer. Maybe bring a light jacket? everyone has got to try it though. -

Love the location, love the presentation, and love love love the desserts!!! Sooo delicious. My favorite ones are normally the fruit tarts which sound somewhat lame in comparison to the ridiculous amount of selection but end up being the most delicious! The peanut butter cake is pretty delicious too, but to be honest, you really can't go wrong with any of the desserts.
Their brunch and regular food is also good, but I highly recommend this place solely if you have a sweet tooth -

My friend was getting set to move across the country and as a farewell we wanted to get her out to some of her favorite Portland places. For dessert this was naturally her top choice. We had a small group and were able to be seated right away. There were so many tempting choices on their dessert menu, plus the menu indicated the items that were gluten free.
This place also makes a great date spot.
So mix things up a bit. Come here with friends, come here with family and even a romantic interest. ;-) -

The service
When we got there, we have to stand for about 5 minutes. the waiter/waitress seems too busy to notice we have arrived. We tried to get their attention but seems like it's not as easy to do. Finally, one waitress approached us and guided us to sit at outdoor table. From that point going on, it was not that bad. However, it was kind of difficult to get their attention. For example: if you want water or add additional order, etc. The busy night might be one of the reasons, but for a restaurant that charge a premium price, it should not be this way. it could be better.
The food
For the appetizer we ordered some kind of bruschetta. It was not as good. We did not finish it. The salad was just OK. For the main dish we ordered steak and salmon. The salmon is a lot better than the steak. But, we were kind of hoping to get a wonderful food. It turned out a little bit disappointment for that expensive dinner. The dessert was good though. I ordered like 7 layers ice cream cake or something like that. It was a lot better than the main course. In the end we pay like 90 dollar (for two people). It is expensive yet the food do not meet our expectation.
The Location
It is located in NW 23rd area where all the cool and unique restaurants are. it is a nice area to walk pass. If it's summer, it would be cool to sit outdoor and enjoy the weather and people. The parking might be a little bit tricky. If you are lucky you will get the curb parking. If not, you will have to park quite far. Taking streetcar is the best bet.
The atmosphere
the atmosphere is not bad. It is casual. It is chic. It is warm. It would be a great place to hang out with your friend in the evening after office hour. As long as the waitress is attentive enough, you will have a great experience.
My suggestion: good place to may be have drink and dessert. Not really good for your dinner. You might as well get the dinner elsewehere and come here for drink and desserts ! it would be perfect. -

What can I say about Papa Haydn that I am sure hasn't been said already?
I've never had dinner here but the desserts are so beautiful and amazing in flavor. The staff are all very helpful and polite even though it's always super busy, always have a smile on their face. One of the best things about Papa Haydn, when ordering a dessert "to go" the garnishment (syrups, fruits, etc.) are always included in the carefully packaged box with your choice of sweet delight. -

This is a Portland institution. Dessert here is the thing. Full of young couples and old couples enjoying dessert. There can be a wait if you want to come late. And dinner can be pricey. But it is a lot of fun and a good place to enjoy some PDX tradition.

If you want to be fabulously romantic and the weather is decent, pack a bottle of wine and a blanket, swing in here for the amazing desserts to go (they are super fast!), and head down to the park for some sexy mouth explosions with your sweetie pie. -

Los Angeles, CA
What a cute place, perfect for a late night dessert (but no cheesy marriage proposals please!) or for a different evening out with friends with a sweet tooth and big wallets! We had a good experience with the Georgian peanut cake and the triple chocolate cake, very sweet, gorgeously thick at first but then monotonously heavy. Also, the six layer glace (an slice of 3-4 layers of banana, chocolate and vanilla ice cream) was good but not worth commanding $9 for it. The panna cotta felt a bit different from the gelatinous/pudding-like dessert I'm used to, it was good but should be given a different name as it's quite runny. The BFKs were great, but at $8.25 a pop I expect to get out of there and be stumbling around the Upper West Side rather than in some small town dark street.
Overall, I wish prices were much lower for what we got. The location and the ambiance is a definite winner, though. -

Papa Haydn is a Portland bellwether. Local food, in-house desserts, blah blah blah. Maybe I'm jaded. (Quick check: yes, I'm jaded.)
At the advanced age of 27, I have to say that I don't really give a shit about fancy, locavore-oriented, foodie-level lunches. It's just so much jerking off. What I care about is the level of service I get. How I'm treated by the servers (and hostess) is the #1 reason I return to a restaurant -- or not. I'm not high-maintenance, having worked in food service for years. I tip handsomely, ask politely, and don't make elaborate requests.
Papa Haydn, is it such a big fucking deal that I had my dry-cleaning with me when I came in for lunch? Instead of politely checking my suit (it was in a dry-cleaning bag, on a hanger, and would have been sorely out of place at my outdoor table), all three of the people who "helped" me were discourteous, unhelpful, and seemingly baffled.
It's dry cleaning. It goes in the coat check.
The $50 lunch (plus tip) was above-average, what I'd expect from a restaurant with such a sterling reputation. But the staff? No way.
If you want drive-thru level service from hooty-snooty people, this is the place for you. But leave special requests at the door -- because they won't check them for you. -

I've been here twice, one time just for drinks and a snack, and another for lunch. Pretty good wine selection, and the best french onion soup I've had recently! Service was great, and obviously it's a bit pricey, but worth the splurge on occasion. I definitely want to come back for dessert soon

DECADENT CAKES!!!!
My friend was kind to suggest this place for desert....glorious!! We just ordered to go and the worst was to make a decision...and just chose one or 2...so complicated to just come down to a single slice!!
I had one that had a champagne vanilla dough and raspberry sauce. Decoration included a macaroni. Just perfect!Listed in: Sweet treats

Great place to end your night, begin your night, or a quick meet up paired with something decadently sweet. With a large array of desserts, you're sure to find something that suits your palette.
The food is good but nothing spectacular worth paying high price for. Also, the wait can be long on a busy night. -

Papa Haydn is the ideal destination for desserts. It's a great place to go to get goodies after an Easter or Christmas midnight Mass. The sweet indulgences are delicious after a fast.
The cakes are sumptuous, especially the tortes. The brownies and ice cream are luxurious.
Papa Haydn has OK meals, but desserts are the centerpiece. Save room for the sweets. They are sinfully sweet! -

THE BOMB!! Had the ice cream sandwiches. My favorite by far was the pistachio macaroon with strawberry ice cream.
We ordered the sampler, and by far that was the best one!
I'm definitely a fan of this place! I recommend it to visitors, locals, and if I ever go back to Portland I would come by again. Delish desserts for sure!!! -

Thanks, Yelp! My family and I were on a road trip from California, driving through Oregon and had been saving money making sandwiches and even cooking at some rental homes. We made our splurge dinner in Portland since we figured it was the biggest town we would be staying in and thanks to Yelp, chose Papa Haydn. We were lucky enough to get a nice table for dinner without much wait. We knew we were lucky with all the people in line when we arrived as well as when we left on a week night at 9pm! Since the hostess asked if we were coming for dinner or dessert, I knew the dessert must be good. Even though I didn't save any room, I decided to take mine to go. My peanut butter creamy thing was delicious. The caramel added the perfect touch.
My dad and hubby loved the salmon. My mom's chicken pasta was definitely too salty. Well the pasta part was good but the chicken tasted like salted chicken jerky. Our favorite part of the meal was definitely the scallops for appetizer. -

Three words: Triple. Chocolate. Torte.
I've had other things here, and they're all perfect, but nothing compares to the Triple. Chocolate. Torte. When I'm not eating this cake, I'm thinking about eating this cake. It's super rich, but I don't even care. That's how amazing it is! You can't bring yourself to stop eating it until there's absolutely nothing left. It's a chocolate buttermilk cake in four layers filled with espresso ganache and glazed with milk chocolate ganache. And then you know what else? They give you some chocolate ganache on the side to pour on your already insanely chocolatey cake!!! Please tell me how it gets better than that, because I don't think it does. I would honestly marry this cake if I could. And have little cake babies. Settle down, have a dog and a white picket fence. The whole shebang!
Marriage is about love, people! Don't judge me. -
Review from Tan C.

I must say this place is great for desserts and drinks (the alcoholic kind) in the afternoon. The restaurant sits in a beautiful neighborhood nested with tall trees and lots of unique local shops. Our Monday afternoon visit was met with little wait, however, this place is usually packed (up to one hour waits or more) on the weekends.
My course included the New York Cheesecake and a Mojito. Once more, lets talk three categories:
Atmosphere: The developers spent some time with the interior because everything from the walls and decoration down to the seats and tables are elegant. The dessert half of the restaurant is shared by a firebrick oven and bar on the other side, leaving you the option of satisfying all your appetites here.
Taste: I choose the Cheesecake because it's a classic dish, and one of my favorites. The consistency and flavor was top notch, something I really enjoyed about this dessert. The Mojito was also a good combo, until of course the alcohol hits you.
Service: Our table was located outside and our waiter was very proper. In general, the people in this neighborhood are just nice.
****
Unfortunately I didn't have space in my tummy for a lunch meal, but our friend said Papa Haydn is one of the best places in the area to grab food. I'll definitely make time to stop by here again because it's such a hit. -

Sweet mother of delicious desserts! I've convinced myself you cannot go wrong in ordering anything on their menu. It's all THAT good. $8 on average will get you one of their myriad of current desserts that are all quite wonderful I'm sure. The Sorbet bomb....pretty good. The cookie part is delicious and buttery tasting and their sorbet is fresh. Carrot Cake....YUM. Strawberry tart...MY FAVE! The only one I have been slightly unsure about thus far was the Neapolitan cake....Ice cream was good but the cake was overly frozen and a bit hard to eat. Other than that I absolutely love this place especially for a late night sweets attack. :)
Their BFK drink is made especially well as they have great coffee. I have only eaten here for dessert and can only review on that portion but Papa Hayden is a great place to hang with friends on a girls night out or bring a date!Listed in: "Must Try" Places

The fruit desserts here are always the best- try anything that's a seasonal fruit tart or a cobbler. The chocolate desserts here are always a bit rich for me but my boyfriend LOVES them. The chocolate cube is his favorite. This is a great place to go for a date-night or girls-night dessert or impress your parents if they're in town.

Great Deserts. This place is little pricey but the food is great.
I love the feel of the restaurant and the setting. They have so many different kinds ( 10+). with beautiful presentation. The plating of the deserts are so nice it looks like art.
I deduct 1 star because i did not like our waitress and the lemonade drink i ordered taste awful. They must learn or improve on taste of Fresh Lemonade. : ( -

Yum yum yum!! So many delicious desserts that are as beautiful and creative looking as they are delicious. Only 4 stars in my book because it is always SO crowded. Which is fine in the summer when you have to stand outside for 20 minutes waiting for a seat, but not so fun in the winter. It's a great place in a great part of Portland to go for dessert after a day of shopping.

This is literally one of my favorites restaurants EVER!!!!!
I come here all the time. The service is highly professional, the food is impeccable, and the cleanliness in the whole restaurant is very nice.
I recommend coming here for brunch, but lunch and dinner is good too. Last time I came here for brunch it was AMAZING!! I had the Duck Confit, and it was delicious. The duck was perfect!
But seriously you have to try their cakes. That's literally what makes Papa Haydn so special. Get the lemon chiffon. This is the BEST cake i've ever had!! -

5-star based on their cakes alone.
My favorite of all time is the Boccone Dolce. Delicious meringue w/ seasonal fruits. Another favorite is the Cassatta. It's usually $8 for a slice of their cakes, which is a bit pricey but totally worth it. You can also order whole cakes for $45-$50.
Papa Hadyn's is my "go-to" for dessert and/or birthday cakes.
