Love this place. So nastalgic everytime I visit.

You dont go here if you're snobby --- you go here because its the orginal spot, the best spot to relax in La Jolla with your coffee!

After having to listen to the fat, obnoxious butthole at Goldfish Point Cafe, I decided to pack up and find another coffee house to chill at while working on my novel.

Here i sit at Pannikin, and it is a great improvement.

The latte I am enjoying is GOOD. Even though I requested a paper cup and got an ugly, chipped mug instead, the great taste pretty much makes up for the fact that this mug looks like it was unearthed from the basement of a meth lab. They really need to buy new mugs.

My blueberry scone is also yummy.

The patio is quaint, and nice. There is lots of seating. There is also free WiFi.

The only thing I don't like is that, even though I am in La Jolla, this place draws hipsters. You know, people wearing socks on their heads, sporting dirty beards, and looking like they haven't bathed in decades.

Also, and I thought this was a bit strange, but when I ordered my blueberry scone the barista looked confused...or dazed...not sure...but I think he is one of those hipsters and he must have just smoked the "bad thing" out back. Oh well, it didn't effect the awesome taste of my latte.

Great breakfast for a cheap price! I had a lovely brunch here, got the Greek Eggs because it was labeled "local fav" and I was very satisfied. The dish had lots of eggs which was very tasty and flavorful. It came with a gigantic bagel bread, which was delicious as well.

There are lots of sittings outside the cafe which was nice. The decorations are funky and the ambiance is fun and relaxing. Lots of tempting bakeries on display.

A TON of space, awesome location, and the drinks were not too bad.  Very cool ambiance.  We went when there was a blues band playing which was just the right thing to sit down and watch for 20 minutes (it would have been cool if there were able to dim a couple lights though).

One real gripe though, which is that we ordered our drinks "for here" and amidst the band playing there wasn't really a system in place to inform us that our drinks were ready.  They were placed near the cash register and we were on the opposite side of the room.  The only way I could tell they were ready was that a couple of baristas were standing around watching the band, 10 minutes later, after they had cooled down a bit.

Pleasantly surprised at this quiet, quaint little gem. I have heard only good reviews from friends and finally came to check it out the other night. Why have I waited so long??? $2.00 for a cup of tea, that is a great deal. I am usually more of a coffee drinker but decided to have some herbal tea since it was 5pm. All of their goodies and desserts looked divine, but I didn't want to ruin my dinner ; (

Cant wait to try the coffee.

Great location, I know parking can be a pain sometimes, I got lucky since it was after school hours. They have ample inside and outside seating. Great tunes playing and very friendly, knowledgeable staff!!!

Don't know why I've never reviewed this place given that its like my default study place away from home.

Love that there are power outlets everywhere. I am emotionally attached to having a full-brightness screen, so studying with power is crucial. They even have power outlets outside, stuck to the tree.

Music is always good, even though its greatly varied. Where else can you listen to Historia de Un Amor one day and the soft soothing songs of Sufjan Stevens the next?

They get pretty busy here on weekends with the brunchers, but they've never seemed to mind terribly that I sit there for hours at a time.

Quiche is great--flaky crust with egg that has a good texture (I hate when quiche is too rubbery). Pastries and desserts are yum. I have a special place in my stomach for lemon bars and theirs are quite good (although I don't like the sugar on top).

Coffee is not my favorite, but I put up with it  for everything else.

Anywhere else in the country, this place would be a 4-5 star establishment via Yelp Review, but San Diego has stiffer competition.

Certainly all about atmosphere and quite possibly one of the hippest spots to chill, sip, read and people watch; but, the quality is so-so.  I think they might have become a little too comfortable with status-quo and their loyal following, that quite possibly over time, this minor oversight, could become a much larger problem.

This does not mean that Pannikin does not still have a special place in my heart, but much more for the vibe and slowly less and less for their product.

Came here a while ago but forgot to write about it! Really cute place with good food. The Riviera Salad is really tasty. The turkey sandwich was also really good and not dry. I got the cranberry almond muffin which was a bit dry, wish it was warmed up or something.

Love the seating outside, you're in San Diego, you should always sit outside when you can! Also parking isn't difficult on the street unlike the major downtown La Jolla area.

Stumbled upon this place when I was in the area. Kitchen closes at 3pm. Bummer, I was looking forward to trying out their extensive looking menu but it was probably better in the long run because everything was priced around $8 so I saved a couple bucks.

    Spinach & Mushroom Quiche - $4.75
Very tasty. You can get it with melted cheese on top too, but I had it plain and it was pretty filling by itself. They also cut up some watermelon for me on the side which was nice.

    Small Mocha - $2.25 (? ish)
Actually comes in a pretty big mug, so idk if they upgraded me or if they are descended from gargantuan peoples who have skewed perspectives on size. But whatever, WIN WIN for me ! Pretty good, better than Starbucks because the chocolate doesn't taste like it's from a syrup. It's actually very rich without being too sweet, my only qualm is that it was more milky than espresso-y for my tastes. But overall a very good cup.

Staff is friendly. The cashier taking my order seemed very stoic and unsmiling so I was kinda thrown off, but he was very accommodating in making sure everything was ok with what I ordered (if I wanted whipped cream, cheese, or hot sauce.. even brought my food to me) So... I'm going to assume he was staring at me really stone-faced & intently because my eyelashes were clumpy or I had something on my face & he was trying to figure out what it was.

Ambiance is very cute, lots of wooden tables and squishy colorful
seating areas scattered about. Love that there is enough space here for me to set up camp (unlike Starbucks, where I hover awkwardly trying to force people to leave their tables just by sheer will/ looks of desperation). I also love how this place is filled with friendly locals that all seem to know eachother. I feel homey just sitting here, I can pretend I'm not forever alone !

    So....I like it here.

This place is adorable.  My friend and I spent a good 1-2 hours just sitting outside enjoying our drinks and food and doing a little people watching.

On that note, their chai latte is delicious.  As is their cranberry apple almond muffin.  Their food and drink menu is quite extensive and what I saw come out of the kitchen looked delicious.

The little birds that hang around waiting for scraps are quite pushy (landed on our table and started pecking away at our muffin when we weren't looking), but I found it to be rather cute.

Pannikin has such a cozy atmosphere with really nice outdoor seating. The employees were really friendly and helpful. I got a veggie sandwich and a soup: the sandwich was great, really fresh and healthful, but the soup was extremely sweet and I would probably not order it again. Next time I will try a specialty drink! Overall a really nice place.

I used to live right next to the Encinitas location and it was heaven to be so close to good coffee. So when I was in the La Jolla area, I had to make a stop in and have a mocha before heading the the farmers market.

There mocha's are like a little bit of heaven!! Every sip is so dang good! The staff is always super laid back and friendly and the atmosphere is parallel. It's just a great place to people watch, catch up with friends, or read a nice book. They do offer breakfast and lunch options for food too, not just pastries and baked goods.

I'm always down for a little Pannikin, even if my wallet isn't.
    See you again soon.

Coffee is good, but at the price of inept employees.  Just walked in and overheard the barista explaining to her friend that she had to go the bank to work out all the late charges she has been getting. She then asked her boss why he thought the register might be $83 over... Well when I handed her a $5 bill for $2 coffee and got back $2, it really wasn't hard to figure out. Hiring employees who cannot do simple math is not a great business model.

Been trying to study off campus more recently and I came to pannikin with a few friends to get some work done. I like the open, airy room--perfect for nice weather. I like the wooden tables and mix of couches, plus my mango iced tea was great. My only complaints were that the outlets are seriously difficult to access if you want to sit at one of the bigger tables in the middle of the room. Also, sad to say the lemon bar was a little hard and subpar :( Atmosphere is great for studying though, busy but not crazy loud. I'm sure I'll be back in the future as it's not too far from UCSD.

A nice place to hit up before the Farmer's market on Sunday (not a long wait at 8:30am).

As other reviewers have already established this is a great, unique place to enjoy the outdoor patio. Prices are average for a coffee-tea joint. I only had the chai latte with soy, it was good, but it doesn't beat out Coffee Bean's in my opinion. They do beat the chains though in that  they serve "here" orders in mugs instead of paper. I would come back and try a different drink.

They also have some breakfast pastries, egg dishes and small lunch bites if you're looking for nibbles. Anyone know if any of the carb-y options are gluten-free?...I forgot to ask for future visits.

Pannikin has been around so long (1968) that sometimes it slips your mind in favor of the newer kids on the block.

I was heading to The Cottage, but the wait was just a bit too long for this day...so thankfully I steered myself to the P around the corner. It's been a long time...but glad I came back.

Ordered from the friendly guys at the counter and grabbed a seat in the eclectic patio outside (or you could sit inside - but why?). Great coffee, healthy breakfast (steamed eggs - not fried).

Definitely a local hangout...lots of people that know each other and groups that look like they gather every morning to catch up.

I have been coming here since the 80s and appreciate it as a great meeting place with a nice atmosphere and layout. But the good part is that the pastries, food and coffee are of quality too. Just recently (2011!!!!) I stopped by for a quick fix and found it crowded and busy. This is not unusual on a holiday weekend. Despite their being very busy, my "cap" was of superior quality. If I have one weakness it's coffee shops. I feel that the Pannikin really holds its own special place.

I love Pannikin. It's a little hippie escape from the Gucci stores and "Spoiled Rotten" boutiques (actual name) of La Jolla.

The cafe is literally a small cottage surrounded by a beautiful deck with a tree growing out of it. Inside, the decor is fun and funky - local artists' paintings adorn the walls, and there is a giant chess set should you choose to play. The coffee is delicious, and you can pick a nook and get cozy with your computer (or your boy/girlfriend, whatever). There is free wi-fi, and you kind of have to get lucky to snag an outlet, but the patrons are friendly and will usually hook you up.

There is a decent menu - the lox platter remains my favorite, although the scones and muffins are really good as well. You can get lunch or brunch or just sit with a cup of coffee for hours without being bothered. Certainly not their preference, I'm sure, but Pannikin is a classy joint. Note about the refills: they are no longer $ .50... they're now up to $1.00.

My advice? Grab a book from DG Willis, the world's coolest used bookstore, which is Pannikin's neighbor, get a giant mocha, sit on the deck, and read in the San Diego sun for an hour or two. And if some random dude comes up to you and asks if you're single, say Yes. Especially if he's cute.

Best muffins in THE WORLD. They're super moist and dense and filled with all sorts of yummy stuff like dates and dried fruit and nuts and bran. I love them so much. I go there about once a month, buy like 6 or seven muffins, freeze them and eat pieces for breakfast every day. I've also heard that Pannikin does a pretty great hot breakfast, though I've only tried a couple of their egg dishes.

This place felt more like an A-OK to me at the time, but then a friend joined us for food and ordered the Man-which.  I'm sold!

Cute place downtown La Jolla with outdoor seating and Wi-Fi.  Staff is friendly and doesn't mind running through their menu with you, handing out suggestions.  Service is quick and coffee is good.  You pay up front, as well, so you don't have to worry about waiting on the bill.

I ordered the Greek eggs, which were good but I definitely could have handled more.  The Man-which, or croissant with egg, ham, and avocado, on the other hand, is another story.  I'm excited to go back if only for that glorious 'which!  I would say that overall this is definitely not a hangover-cure establishment, but definitely worth the stop in for a quick breakfast or lunch.

This used to be a good cafe with good coffee, but the earlier closing hours (7:00pm every day) ruin it for me.  I mean, it's a coffee shop, and I need coffee AFTER work to get through an evening of post-work research.  This place used to be my first stop almost every day, but now it closes right after I'd arrive, so it's not very useful as a cafe anymore.

I gave the new setup a second shot on a Sunday: the place was filthy...every table in the main indoor dining area had food, drink, salt, cups, napkins, and other things smeared across it.  This stuff was clearly left over for the time when the kitchen was open...and it closed an hour before I arrived.  There was a large colony of flies, gnats, and other creatures swarming around that on multiple occasions during my 10-minute stay landed on me, got in my hair, and otherwise made my short stay very uncomfortable.

The internet was not working when I arrived (checked on two devices that can both connect everywhere else and connected last time) and I needed it for some work so I left rather quickly.  But the other aspects make me not want to ever go back  The place was dark and there was no music, etc.  Basically, the cozy, fun, quirky ambiance that used to make Pannikin a cool place to hang out in are all gone.  There's a small Starbucks a block east from there and that's a better option (though Pannikin's coffee is still better).  If I consider Starbucks a better option overall then that's a bad sign.

Nothing bad to say.  Love the patio, love the indoor seating, love the tea, and always friendly people working.

    I recommend:

    -The vanilla black tea.
-The breakfast burrito.  AMAZING.  I moved to Del Mar and the Pannikin in Flower Hill Mall does not serve a breakfast burrito.  I was crushed.
-Salad with tuna.  The pesto dressing they have here is really good.

Things to know before you go:

-Beware, there is no designated parking and on the weekend it can get pretty hard to park, especially on Sunday mornings during the farmers market.

Very cool coffee shop, cozy and eclectic.  But I find the espresso seriously lacking, and that goes for all locations.  I like the pastries, the teas, and most of all the food, especially the egg steamers.  It's a comfortable place to hang out, and maybe other coffee drinks are fine, but I only drink shots and have never been satisfied.

Sorry, but I kind of don't get what the hype is about...

This is coming from someone who drinks coffee and tea at least twice a day and enjoys fun cafes, but honestly this place didn't do a whole lot for me.

I did like the location and the overall feel of the place. It's very small local coffee shop feeling, which is a nice change from the typical Starbucks. However, the mocha has kind of a funky spice combo that I'm not sure I love and my friend ordered a white mocha that tasted more like sweetened milk than an espresso drink.

I tried their quiche and a cookie. Both were tasty, but granted I was extremely hungry so I don't know if I can accurately rank their food.

So yes, cute, but not my first choice of cafe. Finishing a mocha still confused is never a good feeling.

This is definitely a place where locals frequent. I grew up in the area and still come back to Pannikin to meet up with friends when everyone visits home.

Though I don't go there for the coffee (why I took off a 1/2 star), the food and other drinks are very tasty, and it's a perfect place to chill with friends or do work (free wifi!). They have breakfast and lunch items, lots of delicious baked goods, and a range of coffee drinks and teas.

There is always art on display inside and the ambiance is laid-back and very pretty. There is plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy the beautiful weather!

so I am giving "Brick & Bell Cafe," "Pannikin Coffee & Tea," and "WindanSea Cafe" all the same reviews and 4 of 5 stars.

    Best Hot Sandwich (Bagel)
    1. WindanSea Cafe: very very good. warm, crusty, good veges & meats
    2. Brick & Bell Cafe: good when i ate it, not so great a few hours later
    3. Pannikin Coffee & Tea: you call this food?

    Best Coffee
    1. Pannikin Coffee & Tea: just right!  not too sweet, not too bland, perfect!
    2. Brick & Bell Cafe: not bad, not bad. i like the coffee cup holders (twist the top to close)
    3. WindanSea Cafe: like Starbuck's

    Best Atmosphere
    1. Pannikin Coffee & Tea: free local newspapers, chairs outside, bookstore next door, nice attendants
    2. Brick & Bell Cafe: nice people, but small and lots of old people
    3. WindanSea Cafe: eh, I did come on an offday, but there bagels would make me return!

I'm a huge fan of the Del Mar location in Flower Hill, and I usually love coming to this one since it's a lot closer to where I live, but today, their drinks are really less than satisfactory...

Their chai tea latte was great, but the black tea latte was really disgusting..  Today, I had a mocha, and it pretty much tasted like water with some cocoa powder.  Perhaps I just had a bad batch?

The egg steamers (with my choice of tomatoes, cheese, and mushrooms) were pretty gross too..  It was watery and a bit bland.

I'm pretty disappointed... but I will still give them 3 stars because I love the outdoor patio seating and the atmosphere.  It's very urban, yet traces of a small "cottage-like" feel is present as well.  They also display a lot of work done by local artists, which gives it a lot of character.  Service is great too.. they are prompt and very friendly.. just wish their food was a bit better :\  Nothing to complain about their pastries though!  I love the chocolate croissants, the banana cakes, cookies, granolas, etc.

Despite what I've just said, I'll probably still come back :)

My wife and I went here at the invitation of a friend who was displaying her art work on Pannikin's walls.  I had never been here before.  I had the coffee and my wife had tea.  The service was very friendly and the Coffee and Tea were absolutely perfect.

Next time I am going to try the cupcakes and pies that they had.  A very nice place to relax, check out the art, play chess or work on your thesis (using the free wifi).

Thank you for a nice afternoon.

The coffee, tea, and gelato is all I've tried here. It's a quaint little cafe that has a hipster feeling to it.
It's a nice place to just grab some coffee with a friend and sit and talk for hours because they have nice, relaxing music playing in the background with a hum of voices in the back...

Parking is pretty difficult and the cafe is pretty small, so sometimes it gets kind of packed in there on saturdays..

I wouldn't recommend the gelatos but i'm a fan of the coffees and teas :)

I was referred by one of the bakers, Jessica, to have, I think, Bobby (?) make me a chilled vanilla latte.  However, they ran out of vanilla syrup!  So instead I got a chilled hazelnut latte.  It was awesome though.  Just the right amount of sweetness and coffeeness.

I would have liked it more if it was blended...but then I guess that's called a blended hazelnut latte and I don't even know if they do that...
But overall, it was a great drink!

I hear their baked goods are baked daily!  Definitely going to come back and try some one day as well as some hot drinks.

By the way, you can get 10% off if you rode your bike.  Unfortunately, I went by car :(

I love this place! It's an easy five stars!

It's a hip little coffee bar located on beautiful Girard Street in La Jolla. The place has a very local, homemade-feel to it, reminds me a lot of the grungy little coffee shops in New England. The hammerheads are great and the sugar-free carrot & pineapple muffins are delicious! They are HUGE, super-dense, a bit hard, but sooooooo good! The other muffins are equally dense, big, and tasty! I will definitely come back when I'm in town.

I love coffee shops that are eclectic and laid back.

Great place to study and catch up on your class readings while sipping on your cup 'o joe. I've always wondered what Mexican chocolate would be like, so I ordered the Keith Richards (Mexican chocolate with 4 shots of espresso and milk). Thinking that it would be sweet and spicy, I mainly tasted more of the espresso than the chocolate. Maybe the flavor of Mexican chocolate is pretty low-key? I also requested to not put whipped cream on top, so perhaps that could be another reason. But hey, at least I can cross that off my list and say that I tried it.

Other than that, their espresso was phenomenal. Normally, I would get tired around mid-afternoon. I brought my class readings and my large cup of Keith Richards got me going for hours. I was in the zone and got a lot accomplish. What a great pick-me-up.

The Jimi Hendrix looked good also. Maybe I'll give that a try next time.

By far my favorite coffee spot so far in the San Diego area.  To get to the point, the espresso drinks in general are fantastic and the basic coffee, though a bit on the weak side I feel, doesn't overpower in any way as to compromise its enjoyment. The only tea I've had was an iced coconut green tea which, in the summer weather, left me refreshed.
The feel of the place puts you at a calm and only emphasizes the warm comfort and rush you get from your drinks.

Food from their kitchen in back is delightful and is never a disappointment.  I've tried the first half of the breakfast and lunch time menus, and so far everything was great and always left me full.  The staff members are accommodating and add to the experience as a whole, plus they tend to remember you if you're at least a moderate regular which boosts points in the customer service department in my opinion.

Overall the only complaint I have is that, being a very open space, that the place is too good.  The place is at times understaffed so food from lazy customers who don't take their dishes to the bin attracts flies and sometimes even pesky birds seeking to steal a bite of your $7 greek eggs (a definite must!)  Also, it's often crowded and seating is hard to find given it's small area, though I feel a bigger area would also take away from the experience.

    Great location. Like, seriously great.

Their coffee is pretty awesome, it's strong, and the Keith Richards drink was probably designed to give you heart palpitations. The muffins are always fresh, and yummy.

Ok bla bla. You know all that stuff. If humans had RFID tags, and the door to Pannikin would only let in people who weren't snooty bitches, this place would immediately improve. Kinda like those cat doors. Of course, their clientele would be drastically reduced, but think of how AWESOME it would be.

    In a perfect world......
