    Yelp Challenge 365 # 21/365

A "hawaiian cowboy" restaurant whose menu is 6 pages. They have so many things to choose from I didn't know where to begin. Pizza for 1, burgers, sandwiches, complete meals, salads, mexican food, and on and on.

Do not order the the mahi burger or the fish and chips because the fish is the frozen stuff from the bag; not fresh fish which by the way, they could get from the pier 20 miles down the road....

Safest thing to order:  pizza or burger.  I ordered both to taste.

Now then, Paniolo Country Inn is in Kamuela, home of the great beef....
it was okay. And their potato mac salad was macaroni for the most part. I don't know if I actually found a potato in the salad.

For a late lunch or snack, it was okay

The lady at the car rental spot said that we wanted a good steak, go to the Waimea area because they serve up fresh beef from the Parker Ranch which is the largest cattle farm in America.
Well I don't thing the steak I fought with was from the famed Parker Ranch, but plain ole Texas Longhorn beef. The first clue was when I asked our very, very pregnant server what grade the beef was they served here and she paused like she was gonna drop the load right there, right now and said she didn't know and would ask somebody.
She waddled back and said it was mostly choice.
Choice was fine with me so I ordered a Rib eye medium and started on the salad she just dropped off to me.
For those who don't know, Paniolo means Cowboy in Hawaiian, so I figured this was a safe shot. Wrong! My steak came out and first of all, it was a T-bone instead of a Rib eye and when I pointed it out to preggo, she said she would ask somebody and came back stating that they were out of Rib eyes and this was a substitute, I was hungry and I was growing weary of the server's belly rub against my table, so I dug into my steak.
Dug wasn't the proper word, sawed was. It was tough, flavorless and too raw for my taste and just when I was about to turn into an evil, complaining Mainlander, a group of about 20 local folks, adult and kids filed into the restaurant with Ukuleles in their hands and proceeded with their weekly Hawaiian music session. The Keiki's (kids) were adorable and the music was great, and I forgot what I was so mad about.

I love this place. (: I used to come here all the time in high school! (That was a long time ago though. Haha.)

I just had pizza there a couple weeks ago - and I absolutely loved it! One of the great things about their pizza is that you get a large for less than 20 bucks. Which is GREAT. Because anywhere else in the town that you get a large pizza, it'll easily run you well over 20 bucks! AND umm . . . Their pizza is GOOD. Not too oily like some of the other places in town. (:

They also have other really good food here. I love their ribs and their fries. Sooooo good. They also make really good burgers. (:

Their service is pretty good. On a good day, you'll have a good, nice server. There have been a few times when I've eaten here and the service was really crappy. But, I find it's like that EVERYWHERE! ): Laaaammmeee. Haha.

Well, I would recommend it here. (:

PS, Breakfast is pretty gnarly too.

2nd choice after seeing long lines at Hawaiin Style Cafe.  Just okay - very basic, like dated coffee shop.  Paniolo cowboy decor.  Friendly staff.
Husband ordered the macadamia nut pancake sandwich.  He was surprised to see that the only difference between that and a regular pancake sandwich was that macadamia nuts were (generously) sprinkled all over.  He had anticipated nuts in the batter.  His side of sausage consisted of two small links.
My eggs and bacon followed suit - bacon just the regular old fashioned run of the mill stuff.  I'm spoiled on the thick center slice we see more and more.
Well, the price was right.  We'll hope for Hawaiin Style next time.

I've never stayed at the hotel, but I've eaten at the restaurant several times.  The food is good, and they have an expansive menu, including southwestern-style dishes, pizzas, and local favorites.

On my most recent trip, I had the mahi mahi sandwich, which I really enjoyed.  The fish was fresh and prepared well.  The potato and macaroni salad, which came as a side to my sandwich, was excellent!  I don't recommend the pizzas, however, as they have very bready crusts and a bit too much cheese.

You'll think you stepped back in time and might look around for Flo or Alice in this old fashioned diner complete with older waitresses and cowboy / ranch decor.  I ordered the Buckwheat Macademia nut pancakes which came piled high with plenty of nuts on top and a choice of regular or coconut syrup.  I tried both and liked the coconut variety as a change.  My friend had the typical eggs, bacon and toast... and it was all pretty standard bfast fare... good and relatively cheap.  We drank P.O.G. (Passion Orange Guava).  If passing through Waimea from Kona to Hilo, it is definitely worth a quick stop to fuel your day before some nice hiking.

Group of 6 ate lunch here. We all got steaks. Don't the the cows grazing up above you on the hill fool ya.  Nothing blew me away here. Reminded me of a Denny's type steak. I got the feeling this is the place for breakfast. Ate it all and filled me up.  That's about all.
