I have been going t Solunto's for over 15 years.  I have two things that I regularly have.  First a meat ball sandwich, send and this is the 100% go to sandwich for me is the Solunto Special...god i love that sandwich.  I normally have it with all the fixings plus mayo and mustard.

When i'm in a rush ill just take it to go...and when it time to eat it i'll toast the bread and heat the meat in the microwave.  it really is that good.

I think I have to go this weekend to get my fix.  The place has changed but their bread has not, thank the lord.  It is the bread that makes this place!!!

overall the place I would go for a sub..hands down.

I came here for two reasons.  My cuz told me it was a great little authentic Italian cafe that had delectable meatballs.  Also, I knew they made the bread for Poma's so how could they be anything bad?
I made it a point to go in.  Pretty decent looking bakery.  I wanted to sample everything, but I had to get a Meatball sandwich.  It was delicious!
Funny though, it wasn't hot at all!  I don't know if it was supposed to be or not, but the balls were cold, and the bread was straight outta the bag.  Fresh and tasty, but I was surprised fo sho.  I liked it a ton though.  I gotta try some other stuff soon.

Initially I was boycotting this place. Maybe I am weird but the bright yellow painted brick exterior and the name "BREAD COMPANY" kind of put me off. It is clearly an actual restaurant, not just a bread company and the yellow is really ugly. My girlfriend however convinced me I am being silly and we should try it.

We got sandwiches for take out and the were very tasty. I also liked their half baked bred loaves they sell. You can buy the bread half baked freeze it and throw it in the oven when you need it and out comes a tasty FRESH baguette, like you just went to the store and bought it. I really liked the sandwiches and the bakery! I don't think I care for the ambiance much though so I probably won't be dining in, but plan to go back and try more of their huge variety of Italian style sandwiches on fresh delicious bread for takeout!

Prior to my sauntering down the street to Mona Lisa, this was my favorite Italian deli.  Mona Lisa uses their bread, so it's not a total break.

Even without my sandwich business, Solunto does two things exceptionally well and so I keep coming back:

1. The pastries,  Of course. Somewhere in the bakery case you will find a delicious, fresh-baked treat.

2. The home-style, rectangle-pan cheese pizza.  At $2ish a slice it will take you back to your Italian childhood, whether real or imagined.  I've eaten this stuff cold, it's so perfect.

If you are looking for a good Italian sandwich this is where you need to go. They also have good pizza ($2 a slice) and meatball sandwiches. The bread is made fresh and they have a lot of delicious pastries to chose from. I have even gone there for breakfast before for an egg/cheese sandwich. I work really close to Soluntos and I keep their menu at my desk. I Love it. Its healthy, cheap, and has that homemade flavor.

This is a sad thing to report.  The end of an era.

Solunto Baking Company, as the Little Italy Old-Timers knew it, is dead.  It has been replaced by a mediocre & overpriced sit down restaurant also called Solunto.

What happened?  My guess is that the original owner kicked the bucket, then it was sold or the kids wanted to turn it around to be a restaurant.  Instead, what happened was that it alienated both the old and the new.

Yeah, they still serve good Italian baked items, but they now charge four fold of what they were a few years ago.

Yeah look, I understand that you have to raise prices, and sometimes you even have to change the way of doing business.  But really, this place has changed so dramatically, that calling it Solunto's is a slap in the face to the loyal following.

RIP Solunto's, I will always fondly remember the $4.00 sandwiches that you sold...

I came here wanting breakfast, but seeing the word "special" next to a picture of an Italian sandwich changed my mind.  An Italian bakery that specializes in Italian sandwiches?  Yum.  I ordered this, my dining partner ordered an omelet.

My sandwich did not taste special at all.  The bread did not taste fresh and if it were fresh, it wouldn't have tasted good.  They use sesame seeds on the outside.  The bread is neither fluffy nor flaky nor chewy nor moist, more like hard and crusty.  The ingredients (salami, cheese, veggies) were good.  The omelet was very simple but was reported to taste good.

We ordered cannoli's to go.  These were filled when ordered.  Filled with custard, not ricotta.  Meaning that these are not cannoli's like advertised.  They are the best non-cannoli's I've ever had, but I would have preferred to get what I asked for.

Thankfully this place puts to rest all those tired East Coast transplants arguing that you can't get good bread outside of New York because of the water or whatever else they say.

Solunto's is awesome. There is a good chance that if you enjoy the bread at your local Italian eatery anywhere in SD it was probably made right here on India Street.

I grew up eating this bread from a spot in Encinitas and when I moved back to SD after college, I was happy to live right up the street from them.

The make a bada$$ Italian/Antipasto salad that I think is under $7. I usually get the traditional Italian sandwich for a whopping $5. I have had breakfast there too which is pretty tasty.

The old ladies that work there are nice and although they aren't Italian in ethnicity, i think they are in spirit.

Cookies can be a bit pricey there but their baked goods are great.

Solunto, I think So.

Authentic. I love this little place. How Little Italy should look, this place takes me back to neighborhoods in NYC or BOS, where Italians are Italians and it's not about $30 lasagna. Go for breakfast or lunch and enjoy.

I happened upon this place last year while strolling down India in search of a nice lunch spot. I've been a repeat customer ever since.

This place has the BEST lasagna I've ever had. The flavor is subtle and buttery with the appropriate amount of cheese. The bread here is out of this world and the sicilian pizza slices are fantastic! And to any of you that have had an experience with a soggy cannoli, fret no more....this place has fresh, flaky cannoli!

Solunto's is a great breakfast spot with some standard egg dishes as well.

What a pleasant surprise. On the way to the airport stopped in Little Italy for a quick bite to eat. All I wanted was a solid sandwich, and that is exactly what this place serves up.

I had the Solunto Special and it was terrific. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a tasty sando. I have only been here once, and only had one thing but they did it right. Also, the place was really busy, and the bakery section of the counter had on display some delicious looking treats.

Check it out....

WOW!!! Their bread is fantastic. I grabbed a hot loaf of Italian bread and thought I had died and gone to Palermo!
I tried a few of their cookies as well which were very good. But the bread is BELISSIMO!!!

I've been to Sicilian bakeries.  Even some in Sicily.  Definitely some in Bensonhurst.  I feel like I have to tell you this before I launch into my review.

My wife and I went to Solunto today and it was okay.  We ordered two arancini (deep-fried, palm-sized risotto balls with peas and meat rolled up inside) and two espressos.  I mean they had great espresso, but the arancini left something to be desired.  It's not that I didn't like it, because I did, it's just that it didn't live up to the memories of the hot, gooey, cheesy, curry-infused peas and meat that I found in Palermo or Brooklyn.  In fact the arancini here were just okay, a little dry, a little bland, and they didn't have the cheesy goodness that I remembered.  Sad.

Anyway, I'm not knocking Solunto's.  They were great and their baked goods looked incredible.  I will definitely go back and try those at a later date.  The torpedos also looked really good, especially the meatball one.

I'll have to try it again before I recommend it though.

Edwin R.'s review is not only spiteful, it's dead inaccurate. The owner, as he crudely and insensitively put it, did "kick the bucket", but not before he expressed his wish to his children that he wanted to add a restaurant to the premises, incorporating all his authentic Sicilian recipes he perfected over forty years. His devoted children put themselves in hock to honor their father's request. As for the prices, 12 dollars for a gigantic, impossible to finish it all plate of pasta rife with sun dried tomatoes, fresh basil, olives, and extra virgin olive oil, along with the delicious Solunto bread (which takes over three hours to make, BTW) is not overpriced. As the new restaurant  just opened on the weekends only early May 2009, I can't understand how this reviewer was able to taste all the dishes, so I suspect this is a ploy to deter clientele. The bakery still exists, menu exactly as it was, including sandwiches. The prices went up ( certainly not four times as much) to defray the cost of the refurbished restaurant and bakery which now  boasts everything made absolutely fresh and on premises, including the cookies. Prices are still way below other restaurants on the street. Shame on you for lying, Edwin.

Cash Only  - No Credit Cards.  The prices recently went up, along with a fancier new menu board and I think fresh paint.  They use to be very inexpensive and much less than other places in the area.  Now they are about average for places in Little Italy. ($10 for a sandwich) But the food quality stands up to the prices.

Chicken Parm is great with breaded chicken cutlets made fresh and as others have stated, the bread is perfect. We always ask for a little extra sauce on the side. Calzone is huge and stuffed full of meat/cheese.. easily feeds two. Cherry turnovers, cannoli, cookies.. all excellent.  We go here often and always leave happy.

This was the first place I ate at when I was looking for a place in Little Italy.  I was lured in by the Trinacria sign on the window (the three-legged sun creature that represents the three coasts of Sicily).  I had just moved from Italy, and Sicily is widely-known for being the home of the cannoli, so I knew I had to try one (or 6).

The cannoli were surprisingly good and comparable to some I've had in Italy.  Crunchy shell, semi-sweet chocolate sprinkles on top, and sweet, almost-fresh ricotta/cream filling.  I also had some of the arancini (fried rice balls):  one filled with cheese, and the other with beef.  Buonissima!

Now, if this place would only be open when I get home from work in the evening, I'd be a regular customer.

I wanted a cannoli and found two different sizes here.   The shell of the cannoli was the best I have had and the cream filling was slightly sweeter than I prefer but otherwise excellent.

There were at least 6 other types of pastries, a case full of assorted cookies that are sold by the pound, fresh breads and half cooked breads.

I wish I would have bought more from this bakery.  I plan to shop here on my next visit to Little Italy.

Great, great bakery.

Their submarine rolls (or torpedo rolls or Hoagie rolls, blah blah, blah) are incredible, especially when they have just come straight out of the oven.  Nothing wrong with a bun in the oven, but these buns are best out of the oven.

Great sandwiches and delicious canolis, too.  The Solunto Special has a few different types of meats on it and it's super cheap, too.

Get a bunch of those long submarine rolls to go and slop whatever you like on 'em when you get home.

Cheap, excellent, and legendary.  And make sure you throw a little silver to the gals who work behind the counter.

Right.  Well, I have to come out with it:  the Zucchini Fritatta sandwich I had for lunch today was, in a word, atrocious, except for the bread.  Good grief, can't they put any seasonings in that fritatta?  I think the cook flung the eggs and zucchini together and then extruded the taste.  Maybe it's the p.c. cook who is afraid of offending anyone's palate and, by remission, sides with the grande blande crowd.  Well, for seven bucks, I felt cheated out of taste.  It's just not good enough to have that nice bread and stick crap in between it.  It just won't do.  I'll take my Italian-sandwich business elsewhere, thank you.

Oh God I love Soluntos.  The small torpedoes are perfect for home-made sandwiches and it's cool that they have half-baked ones to finish in your own oven.  Their sandwiches are pretty good but not quite as good as Mona Lisa's down the street.  I love their pastries way too much.  The gentrification of Little Italy worries me with its tendency to inflate prices, but Soluntos' bread is still pretty reasonable.

i, too, was craving for a cannoli and found this wonderful, wonderful place. there are two sizes. and of course, i got the bigger one, which was waaaay more then enough to satisfy my craving.

the shell is pre-made and set aside. the cream is asserted as orders are placed an topped with chocolate sprinkles. although i expected the cream to be lighter and fluffier, it was alright the way it was. the appearance of the cream reminded me of mayo mixed with sugar or honey. it was that sorta consistency and color.

anyway, i had a sandwich here too. and oh man, that sandwich was gooood. i think it was the solunta special or combo or something.

oh yeah, they accept credit and debit now.

Their breads always fit the bill... I really like the frenchette rolls-- very nice for sticking a Bratwurst or Italian Sausage in. The cannolis are decent for west coast. They sell their assorted cookies by the pound, which is nice when ordering a selection for a party. Stop by for lunch, get a sandwich or one of their hot items....This place is old school little Italy, been here for years. NO CREDIT CARDS!

A wide selection of goods, there was a small line when my friend and I were there. Maybe this was why the lady kept forgetting or misunderstanding what I wanted and I had to repeat myself several times (a few times for the same thing!). You bet that aspect was a little bit annoying. The pastries were pretty good, though I've had better. Prices were alright as well.
