I love going into this place. I mean, how can you resist all those bright colors and all that cheerfulness?!?!
They have home stuff, candles, perfumes, clothes, cards, artsy craft stuff from all around the world, jewelery, and cool gifts. I bought many things there at the holidays, including the most beautiful candles! It's my favorite place to buy gifts, and inevitably I always end up getting a little something for myself.
Some things can be a bit pricey, but you can kind of pick through and find the well-priced things.
I don't live in Nashville, so when I am in town, I like to maximize my time in stores to get the most exposure to cool stuff. Pangaea is always worth my time. it is trendy, but not impossibly so; it has a hippie, non-sterile vibe without that "head shop" feel.
Some people call it "pricey" - I don't think so, for what you get. Last time I was there, I got two headscarves for about seven dollars each and two pairs of feather earrings for the same price. A few weeks prior at Target, I bought some feather earrings for a dollar more than that!
I do find their home decor stuff kind of higher-priced but I guess that's just because I prefer to get my home goods at thrift stores or from dead relatives. Once again, you are paying for uniqueness - sometimes it costs less, sometimes more. And this place has it in spades. I'm definitely going for some oilcloth next time (they have it by the yard! great for cool baby bibs and changing pads)!
I'm visiting Nashville. Itinerary??? Who the hell cares, as long as I pencil in a least 2 hours to spend in Pangea. I will need at LEAST that long to go through all the new jewelry, ALL the new shirts, dresses, scarves and hats. To read all the new magnets and funny pics. To smell all the new candles and laugh at all the quarky collateral spread all over. To look at all the ornate crosses, clocks, and quarky wall decor that cover the walls. To check out all the bags, shoes, business card holders, frames...and FOR SALE BIN!
This place is amazing. They carry a lot of cool Paul Frank clothing, they have unique designer pieces....they always have the freshest in jewelry designs. They have every cool, quarky, odd, obscene, unique, religious, and just plain creatively artistic piece of junk, art, decor and book that are exactly what my creative mind is looking for. You can never get bored in here, and you wont be able to see EVERYTHING...your head would explode....all this in a tiny little store in Hillsboro Village. You my friend? Well lucky you...cause I always go and get the majority of my Christmas presents for my girlfriends here. Always a hit.
Pangea. I love you. Let's be buds ;)
Let's face it, there are not a lot of places to buy unique clothing and accessories outside of the mall in Nashville. Sure, you can hit thrift stores to create a stylish look, but if you lack the ability to scavenge in those places and come out with gems, then spend a few extra bucks at this place.
The owner travels for part of the year, bringing back wraps, skirts, blouses and bags from all over the globe. Lots of bohemian looks inside here, as well as lovely embroidered things, handpainted jewelry and whimsical scarves.
This place is perfect for gift giving, too. Lots of unexpected delights inside. It's crowded--both with people and merchandise--so bring your patience.
I love just looking around in this little store. I kind of feel like I stepped through a museum or something. With that said, it's a veritable smorgasbord of things they sell here. They sell everything from candles and post cards, to clothes, throw pillows, and art. It really is across the board.
I am always amazed at how much they can pack in that little store. It's pretty not cheap but fun to peruse and if you have a friend that has everything this might be the place to find them something. I don't think I ever wander in to the village that I don't' stick my head in hear and have a look around.
Distinctive in its botiqueish ways, Pangaea is store number two that I would brave the parking of Hillsboro Village for, right after Fire Finch. I love to just look around in this place, they have clothes, buttons, jewelry, pillows with Warholish cats on them, and there's something in here for everyone that loves knick knacks. There are even umbrellas at the door, so if you've noticed it's begun to rain, you just snap one of them up, pay for it, and you stay dry on your walk to the car.
During one visit with a friend, we found what we could only assume was a very uniquely shaped clear planter with brightly colored paisley type designs, and a big owl on the front. Even in my long list of knick-knacked websites I have on my favorites list, I've never seen this thing anywhere else.
Some things in here can get pricey, but what good boutiques don't? I'd still say it's worth a stroll and quite a few purchases.
My book club full of 30 something women loved this place. I think most of us walked away with some sort of trinket, jewelry or clothing. Maybe they have changed their clothing selection because we found quite a few reasonably priced, cute little dresses and tops. (none too hippie).
Overall it would probably appeal more to women, but it is a nice place to wonder around and find all the things you never thought you needed like a book featuring 101 ways to build a bong or baby clothes with Jerry Garcia's face on it. OK, I am kidding they do have that stuff but they also have great stationary, handmade blankets, vintage jewelry. And maybe it is because I am from a city that puts a high price tag on anything "cool" but I didn't find the prices too bad.
I just don't know about this place. It's kind of like a Pier 1 for hippies. And not necessarily the good kind of hippies. They sell tons and tons of strange little knickknacks, like Frida Kahlo playing cards, cartoonish Catholic saint figurines and crosses made entirely of glass.
First of all, I must say that Pangaea is definitely geared toward females. They have a couple of racks of loose, flowing women's clothes as well as purses and other little accessories. They sell a few books, but most of them are along the lines of non-fiction written for and about your cat. I didn't invest too much time (or any money) at this place, but from what I could tell it was a bit pricier than seemed necessary.
Pangaea is in the Village, which means it's walking distance from several very cool shops, restaurants and so on. If you're into vaguely religious iconography that's been passed through a hipness filter and packaged in the American Southwest, then this is the place for you! I just personally can't get into a store that only seems to sell overpriced "neat-looking" little items. If I was a female and younger, however, I'm sure I'd eat this stuff right up.
I was walking by and actually noticed a Yelp sticker on the door, so I just had to stop in! If you can't find what you are looking for at Fire Finch across the street, then walk on over to Pangea and check out what they have to offer.
Pangea had tons of trinket gifts, as well as clothing, mostly womens. But I was happy to see some really interesting books for sale here as well.
I recommend giving this place a try.
I always enjoy my shopping experience at Pangea. It's one of the first shops I visited upon moving to Nashville, and it helped cement the "Nashville is so so so much better than Little Rock" idea into my brain. They have a little bit of everything at Pangea from clothes to jewelry to funny gifts and decorative home items. If you are gift shopping here you'll be pleased to know they offer complimentary gift-wrapping.
The prices in Pangea ranch from $4 rhinestone toe rings to triple digit Free People cardigans. Some of the best deals can be found in the jewelry section. Earrings and necklaces are displayed by price point. Make sure not to overlook the $6 and $10 sections because I've found some amazing treasures there.
While I was in town visiting I came to this store with my brother's girlfriend. I hadn't anticipated buying anything, but left with a great purse, 3 pairs of earrings and a cute hat.
I was surprised to read some peoples comments that the store is too expensive. It is much cheaper than comparable stores in Chicago and other places I have been. I spent about $120 for all 5 of the things I got - none of which were on sale. You pay for what you get and if you want to spend less money, maybe you should shop more at Target?
All in all I think this place rocks. I will be back . . .
I loved Pangaea from when it used to be over near the old Sunshine Grocery (which I miss very much...cry), and I used to go there all the time in high school. I though it had closed for a while, before I discovered it had opened up again in Hillsboro Village.
I like Pangaea because it's a boutique but it's not one of those skinny girl places. They have cute brands like Free People, and some really unusual tee-shirts, which aren't too expensive, about $30, but different enough to be worth it.
One of the niftiest things about this store though is the Tennessee and Nashville retro postcard gifts. They have tablecloths, wrapping paper, umbrellas, lampshades and nightlights. They would make great gifts for people moving away from Nashville.
I really like the look of this store. It's crammed with all sorts of things I'd like to fill my home and wardobe with. Folk art; chunky vintage jewelry; sassy litte dresses. Like other reviews have noted, it is pretty pricey, but they can give a discount, as I just found out.
I had been eyeing a really cool, stylized, Sacred Heart Mexican tin-pressed mirror. It was a bit out of my range to spend, but armed with birthday money, I finally bought it. However, as it was a little high up on the wall, the person taking it down neglected to do so carefully and left a little dent in the tin. Because it was one of a kind and they couldn't grab me another, the other cashier offered me 10, then a 15% discount without my asking. She then carefully bubble wrapped it, and sent me off with a smile and beautiful art for my wall.
It is pretty expensive, but there's always something different to pick up for gifts if you can swing the price.
Pangaea has really improved over the years. They used to specialize in more hippie-type clothing but they have become less hippy-more-hip in the past few years. I like to shop here for unique jewelry and gifts for friends. The jewelry is a bit less expensive here than at Fire Finch, but unfortunately for my wallet, I seem to find more that I like at Fire Finch.
They have a ton of cute gift items here, so if you are looking for a gift for a girlfriend but have NO IDEA what to get, then head to Pangaea. If you can't find anything, then go over to Fire Finch. Between the two stores, they make up a Hillsboro Village super-duo for gift shopping!
I have to say, the buyer for the store has unique taste. You will find some funky items here that you will wonder "Who in the heck would ever buy this?". Also, the clothes are usually cute but they never fit right. Yet, I continue to go back!
I love this place. I don't give it a full 5 stars only because it is a tiny store and it's always so packed! But that's a positive as well, I guess!
It is what I would call very "kitschy"--all kinds of interesting and eclectic knick knacks (to use a term from my grandmother, but the only one I can deem appropriate at this point) such as hammered tin light switch plates, beaded wire chandelier hanging thingies, brightly colored pillows and quilts (similar to Anthropologie style), magnets, you name it they have it!
Oh--and they also have casual clothes--Free People is one of the main names that comes to mind. Most things are a little more bohemian in style, but not all--and great prices--I bought my favorite LBD (little black dress for those out of the know) there for only $68! And it's a Kensie! That brand would probably be slightly higher elsewhere.
Unique jewelry there too--and inexpensive! This is another great place to shop for gifts. Just don't go with a huge group of people--you might not all fit--but definitely go!
Pangaea is a Hillsboro Village staple and one of my favorite stores in the area. They've apparently been around for 20 years which is impressive for a small, locally owned and operated store (and refreshing in our culture of chain stores and monotony). They define the term eclectic kitsch, walking in the door is like hitting a big red flashing 'sensory overload' button in your brain. There are things that draw your interest every way you turn and it is hard at first to pick something to focus on. Shopping in there sometimes makes me understand what it feels like to have ADD. It's amazing how much time you can spend in there, especially considering its small size. Usually I have to take three or four laps around the store before I feel satisfied that I've looked at everything.
You can expect to find everything from clothing and accessories to jewelry and trinkets, house wares, gifts and unusual thing-a-ma bobs that fit in between. Their wares remind me of that cool aunt that is kind of used to maybe be a hippy that has done some globetrotting and is an authority on random pieces of information. It's a good place to go gift shopping especially for those people who are hard to shop for or have 'outside the box' taste. Their clothes run on the small side so if you're itty you'll be fine but if you've got any parts that are a bit larger than 'average' you might find some difficulties. I'm a big accessory freak, and I love their selection of purses and sometimes find myself on the edge of hyperventilating trying to decide what jewelry I want to take home.
They offer a lot of handmade and one of a kind items which is really cool but can get expensive. It can be hard to shop here if you're on a strict budget, usually I only let myself go in Pangaea if I have some extra cash or if I'm looking for a specific person. Be prepared to spend some time here not just because of all the bright, shiny things to look at, but because of the store layout as well. It's generally packed no matter what time of day you go and there is so much stuff crammed in the store you find yourself having to squeeze through people and openings just to get around. Because of this at least one person knocks something over and breaks it every time I visit. It takes a lot of concerted effort to not end up being that person. Pangaea offers items for men and women, but their male selection is very limited and is usually of the ultra-trendy variety, so if they guy you're shopping for doesn't fall under that category he's probably not going to like the shirt you got him from there.
Again, like other Hillsboro Village establishments, parking can be a terrible pain. Pangaea doesn't have its own parking lot so your stuck trying to find a spot on the street, or sneaking parking in Belcourt's pay lot and either shelling out the cash or crossing your fingers that you don't get towed (which I never have been but probably will next time because I say that). When you're done shopping, be sure to hit up one of the cool bars in the area or go across the street and grab a delicious coffee from Fido.
Compared to Fire Finch across the street and Natural Selections down the street, this is much better. However, this is still sub-standard. The prices are too high, the variety is lacking, and the place doesn't smell so good.
I went in this place after being rudely treated in Fire Finch. The workers here were friendly, but that's the only good thing I can say about this place.
Pangea is a funky little shop on 21st Ave. It is geared toward young college girls. The clothes are casual, but they have some cute day dresses, purses and other knick nacks. They have some unbranded items here which appear to be homemade. The patterns of those items are pretty basic like a full skirt, or basic tank dress. In addition to these items they carry some labels such as Free People.
They have lots of costume jewelry here at the store. The pieces are eclectic and something that you might find in a vintage store, but all the stuff at Pangea is new. They also sell 'gift' items. The gift items include postcards, bath soaps, and decorative pillows.
I have found a couple cute sweaters on sale at the back of the store. The sale section is pretty large, so it is worth looking through to find a good deal.
Pangaea is hands down my favorite store in Nashville. I don't really even know how to explain it because of its eclectic stock, but picture Dia de Los Muertos meets old aluminum store signs and then stamp that on jewelry, purses, shirts, books, and whole bunch of other stuff. I will say that a lot of their stuff is usually too expensive for my budget but there are definitely good inexpensive things to be found. It's a great place to go to find a birthday present or such for your non-lame friends. My last buy: ¡Hola Jalapeño! (a kids book about food!).
Hands-down my favorite place for last minute gifts.. one of the most eclectic and laid-back-atmosphere type of places in Nashville and one of the highlights of Hillsboro Village. Decorative pillows, a large collection of unique jewelry at a variety of prices, and hilarious gift items and cards make this place a hit whether you are buying something for yourself or a friend or are just looking to kill some time browsing. Although it is definitely a female-oriented shop, guys could get a kick out of the kitschy items around the place. Irreverent, boxing-nun-type of stuff abounds here.
There is some men's clothing, mostly shirts I think, near the back but I would say 60% of the clothing is women's'. Great female clothing, including hippie skirts and girly dresses, although pretty overpriced. I bought a cute shirt there the other day that was under $30 though. Lots of "Free People" items and interesting tops.
Used to be my favorite "secret place" for finding interesting gifts in Nashville but now..everyone knows about it! If you don't mind politely elbowing past a few people to snatch the glow-in-the-dark Mother Mary dashboard statue (oh yes, next to the jewelry case)-- you will most likely get a kick out of this place and might even find something great to take home!
NEW MEXICO in Nashville! :) I have vacationed in New Mexico several times, and this store outdoes even some of the stores in New Mexico itself! If you have been to Santa Fe, Taos, or anywhere in New Mexico you probably have seen stores like this. Pangaea carries a lot more than just apparel, it carries all kinds of gifts. There is stuff tucked everywhere. This place has the best selection I have found so far of New Mexico, and Spanish style gifts like Spanish Catholic items, Day of the Dead themed, etc.
The store is very eclectic as agnes b. said. Very funky More than just New Mexico there are some very Bohemian items in here as well, especially the clothing. There is all sorts of great gifts, and tiny unique items that make you go "wow". Go here if you love that style, and want that extra special gift, or some unique converastion piece in your home. Or just go to browse I can bet there is something you will pick up.
Pangaea rocks! They have a great selection of scented candles, cards, books, jewelry, table cloths, knick knacks and other random finds (such as cat butts magnets or a Frida Kahlo doll), along with great and unique clothes.
I find it funny that people think their clothes are expensive, because the average price is between $20-$70 for tees to skirts to dresses. Of course, they go out of that price range, too, but they're still cheaper than my favorite store, Anthropologie. In addition, no where else in Nashville will you find such fabulous jewelry for such cheap prices. They also have Nashville's most interesting baby gifts!
My girlfriend and I ventured into Pangaea last winter when killing some time in Hillsboro Village. It's a very quaint little shop, similar to the junk shops, thrift stores, and other unclassifiable storefronts that littler the downtown strips of Northwestern towns. Lots of...stuff in here. Pretty much everything imaginable from lots of womens clothing, to incense, hats, candles, stationary, art, books, jewelry, and - well, like I said lots of stuff.
This is one of many fun stops to take on an afternoon tour of Hillsboro Village. It's a lot of fun to wander in and out shops like these on a boring blustery day when you have a little money to blow, but don't really have anything in mind. There's a little something for everyone in Hillsboro Village and Pangaea seems to be a direct embodiment of that.
My impression is that part of the experience of shopping at a place like Pangea is picking up an intricately woven change purse, etc., admiring its uniqueness and attractiveness, and then flipping it over to look at the tag to gape at the price. Pangea is full of beautiful bags, notebooks, clothes, decorations, and cards. I wouldn't go to shop there for myself, but I wouldn't mind the prices so much if I were looking for a gift. ...And I don't think I'd have much trouble finding one here for just about any female I know. One thing that surprised me about Pangea the first time I went in is the diversity of the products: they've got folk art from all over the place alongside hippie notebooks and pop art, Warhol-reminiscent accessories.
This store is a textbook example of "eclectic." Great jewelry, cards, funky lamps, vintage-style oilcloth by the yard, Day of the Dead skeletons and Lucha Libre mousepads, silly gifts from the Accoutrements line, unique pillows... and a lot of fashionable clothing items that are completely out of my price range and for very skinny people. Everything other than clothing is seems reasonably priced. And if you can afford to live or go to college in this neighborhood you probably wouldn't bat an eyelash at the clothing prices anyhow. This place has such a mix of neat finds that even people who didn't know me at all bought me a gift here and I was truly amazed...
I love the jewelry selection, and it seems like it would be a good place to go for gifts. I got a mousepad there. It is yellow with a pink skeleton riding a horse.
this is a lovely quirky store where you can find the coolest earrings that no one else has or a funny little birthday card. they also have a pretty snazzy clothing collection. you will pay a higher than average price but it's SO worth the cool factor!
I love window shopping in this import store, but they are extremely overpriced. I usually just wander in for some inspiration. I always find myself thinking I should just go to Mexico where I could find similar items at a fraction of the cost.
this place is perfect for the bloke who needs to buy his bird a present. The store is placked with unique gifts that are all made in good (if not ironic in some cases) taste. The staff is all pretty amazing too.
I don't really know why I am writing a review for this place. The only time I have been in Pangaea for longer than 5 minutes was when I was waiting for my wife to try on clothes. She loves the place, except when she looks at the price tags.
I've loved and hated this store over the years, but it's eventually settled into total love.
A funky little shop plagued by screeching, North Faced Vanderbilt girls, but lovely nonetheless, Pangaea is an awesome place to find a gift in almost any price range for almost any friend, as well as a great place to find a cute accessory for the home or for you. They also sell some nice clothing, and are one the few places in Nashville that has a fairly extensive selection of Free People. Sometimes on the pricey side, it varies widely from season to season and item to item in Pangaea, but if you check that price tag before you fall in love and weigh your options you'll walk away with a value. One of the best experiences at Pangaea was when I was looking for some jewelry or other accessory for a friend's Christmas party. While I was only acquaintances with some of the girls and knew I would be therefore giving my good friends their bigger gifts later, I found a little something for every one, mainly necklaces that were under $10 each, but didn't make it seem like I was cheaping out. The sale rack at Pangaea is normally full of sucky items, but once I found a dress, not on sale, for $30 that was just lovely.
It's all about going in with an open heart, a fun-loving spirit, and a discerning shopper's eye.
Really cute clothes , jewelry and gifts. The clothes are really expensive but the jewelry is reasonable.
one of the best places for jewelry ANYWHERE! they have a great selection, as well as a range of prices to choose from and their jewelry is very unique. i have an earring fetish, so it's good that i'm only in nashville sparingly, otherwise, i might actually have to seek help for my "problem".
