This place really does not deserve a four, but will get one just for being open on weekends until 3 and feeding me.

Location: Two blocks from my house, the perfect place for me to walk to drunk as balls and falling over. It's right in the heart of the ever so trendy 16th street and it's location could not be more ethereal.

Space: It looks like your abuelita's kitchen in El Salvador.

Ambience: Super diverse. You'll see natives, hipsters, young people old people. Seriously, every one in the spectrum will eat here. Poor people, rich people drinking in the nearby trendy areas. Everyone.

Service: Super mean and very Salvadoran style. Almost, lack of service. Like snarling, indifference, etc. It's all part of the experience.

Food/Drink: Quite yummy. I can see the ladies rolling the masa in the back and it's delicious. They put a bit too much loroco in the queso y loroco pupusa, but if you like that, then by all means, order it. They're not that greasy, but just as delicious. Their tamal de elote is pretty fucking yummy. Then again, I will eat an arm at 3 a.m. drunk as tits.

Overall: I have a great appreciation and almost love for this establishment.

Kind of hiding behind that news press box out front Panchita's finds you wandering around the Mission, wondering which taqueria to choose.
Pick me! Unassuming, but entirely authentic, this location caters to it's regulars and wanderers like me.

The lunch was good and well priced. Home made corn chips and Chipotle Salsa, are served up.
Beef hard shell Taco's and yummy beans and rice sustain us through the afternoon.

The place itself is like a bit of an architectural museum, the floor tiles seem to tell a story that takes you back in time. This isn't a romantic spot. No, it's more of an adventure.

Finally ate here and I was not disappointed. The papusas were excellent, not that I'm an expert. Ordered 3 and only ate 2. The portion sizes were big enough to satisfy a hearty appetite. Plus the price was definitely satisfying. Only thing about being a Ma and Pop place (decor is nothing to brag about), service is slow. So if time is a cruncher than I don't recommend coming here also the location isn't in a great neighborhood.

This is the reason why San Francisco is one of the top foodie city. Restaurant like these are diamond in a rough!

For 4 pupusas My pal and I waited 30 minutes to get them.  Their take out is basically in foil and in plastic bags.  Overpriced while other places charge like 75 cents less and their takeout is more neat and well packaged.  I've had much better service at a better price!

Overrated and overpriced!!!

Stop #3 on our food crawl, papusas.

Seriously, the plain bean and cheese one is so good.

I actually have a pretty funny story about this place.  I came here with a few friends back in 2008, we each got two papusas, and this was after we ate dinner, so of course we were a little full.  We packed the papusas to go - my friend puts his in his pocket.  I'm not joking, we were just drunk.

Off we go to polk street bars, where we never make good decisions.  After last call jell-o shots, we grab cabs and go our separate ways.  I get a text at 3am from my friend stating "I just found the extra papusa in my pocket, what a nice surprise. Tell your friends."

I found my papusa in my purse the next day.  Always a good time at Panchitos no. 2.

The spinach and cheese pupusa that I got was overwhelmingly cheesy to the point where the only thing I could taste was the very rich, rather salty flavor of the cheese. When I broke into the pupusa, the cheese curds just ran out everywhere. The loroco and cheese pupusa was significantly better. Not only was it not runny like the spinach one, but the balance between the cheese and the loroco was such that the loroco stood out as a nice, briny green (if green were a flavor) contrast to the milky richness of the cheese. Despite the fact that they were only $2.50 each, the pupusas were nicely sized and quite filling.

The chips that were served before the meal tasted a little stale, and the dipping sauce was lacking in depth, but they were so addictive that I ate most of them, anyway. The pickled cabbage was rather flat and dull-tasting. It was not sour, spicy, sweet, or even bland... it was just plain dull and blah.

Service was slow (and seemed even slower because I was sitting right in front of the window to the kitchen and could see the two women in there, taking their time to make the pupusas), but the waiter was friendly and attentive. I wouldn't recommend sitting at the counter unless you want to stare awkwardly at the waiter and the kitchen staff throughout your meal. For such a great place to go for a cheap, satisfying lunch, it was surprisingly empty at noon. They do do takeaway orders, for those who like to dine in the comfort of their own home or office, and also accept credit cards, if you're short on cash.

I love this place - it's a hidden gem. This family owned eatery is staffed with friendly people.

The papusas are super yummy and very cheap- 2 will fill you up easily and you'll spend under $5. The chips and salsa are yummy too.

I highly recommend checking them out. Great for lunch or an afternoon snack.

the decor -- they have RIP signs of the fallen
the food -- barely passable even to drunk people

I was freezing and thought Salvadorean food would hit the spot, so we ended up here.

Both ordered the pupusa plate, which comes with 2 pupusas, rice, beans, and their pickled cabbage/slaw dish.  The salsa that came with our chips at the beginning of the meal was pretty spicy and good.  The pupusas (got the beef/cheese and chicken/cheese ones) came out steaming hot and were delicious. Especially liked the rice which had just the right mix of saltiness and proper texture that I hadn't tasted since...well, since back in the South.  Like my Grandma used to make, for serious.

It was a LOT of food...I couldn't finish it all.  The damage?  $12.50 total for both meals.  I could've just ordered 2 pupusas for around $2 each and saved myself even more money.  Or just eaten one and saved the other...in any event, yeah, you get a lot of food for cheap.  Most of the other items on the menu didn't go past the $9 range for the meals from what I saw.

I didn't think the service was that bad, but I was all blissed out from meditation so your mileage may vary.  But excellent, excellent eats.

I had lunch at Panchita's Restaurant in the Mission.  First the not so good news.  Unfortunately what they say about the service is true.  I had to get up from the table twice to ask for menus and ask the waitress to take our order.  Since they are nice people, I decide to cut them some slack and keep my cool.

So we ordered the Chicken Enchiladas, the Chicken Tacos and a Bean & Cheese Burrito.  Each plate was served with rice and refried beans.  The rice was the best Mexican rice I have had in a while.  The refried beans were delicious too.  The seasoning of the meat made the enchiladas and the tacos very good.

For drinks we ordered the horchata and pineapple.  The pineapple is sweet and the horchata is refreshing.

It's a good idea to practice your patience when dining at Panchita's Restaurant.  You will greatly be rewarded with tasty and satisfying dishes!

If you're impatient, call ahead - there's a reason why there's a 2 pupusa minimum.

If you want your drinks before your meal, just say so, I'm sure they'd oblige (they have $7 Regia beer - not great, but the price is right and the large bottle easily serves two).

Also note that what initially appears to be a sorry excuse for salsa with a spoon in there for no reason makes a kick-ass enchilada/pupusa sauce - once the pickled cabbage (El Salvador's version of kim chee?) shows up with your pupusas and you realize just how good all three are together, the light bulb will go off.  The chips that come with the salsa are good, but the salsa doesn't go very well with them.

I got the chicken/cheese and the bean/cheese pupusas, and my friend got the revuelta (pork, bean and cheese) and the spinach/cheese pupusas - we both agreed that the revuelta was the best one, but couldn't agree on the rest.  No matter though, they were all excellent and extremely filling - I have part of a bean pupusa awaiting me in my refrigerator.

***Before I finish this review, I need to turn this over to my inner 11-year-old boy for a sec:

Hee hee, pupusas, heh, that sounds like, hee hee, like because pupusa sounds like, well, you know...and it also kinda sounds like a girl's well...hee hee...pupusa.  *giggle snort giggle*

***Okay, I feel better now.

Cool little spot to go if you're in need of pre-drinking sustanance but aren't in a hurry (emphasis on not in a hurry).

Panchita's is the epitome of "family restaurant." A picture of their son, who was murdered two years ago, hangs on the wall above the register. People walk in and up to the kitchen window, place their orders in Spanish, and sit down. If you're looking for that type of restaurant, than this is the place for you.

The pupusas are fantastic. At $2, their price is unbeatable. I've tried their tamales and other dishes, and while I wouldn't say I was disappointed, I wouldn't say I was "wowed" either.

For those unfamiliar with pupusas: a thick tortilla stuffed with toppings (meat, cheese, beans, or whatever) and then fried. Pupusas are usually served with a pickled cabbage and hot salsa, which combined is mmmmmmmmmmm.

Super Yummy.  The rice tasted EXACTLY like my grandmas, and the pupusas were perfectly crispy on the outside, and soft ad smooshy on the inside.  I got one cheese and one chiccharon.  The cordito was super crispy and just enought spicy to make me happy.I also got a horchata, and it was very delicious. There was enought food for me to bring left overs home.  Don't expect a warm and caring waiter..hes there just to bring your food and take your order.

Oh sweet heaven in all its delicious post pitcher of beer glory...

These pupusas are pretty tops though slightly pricey for the big 5 star rating!  At $2 a pop it's still not a bad late night snack.  Greasy, crispy, soft, and flavorful in all the right ways.  I love that the loroco is whole and flavorful rather than chopped in little bits and pieces -- this adds just the right touch of bitter spice to cut the richness of the cheese and grease.   They come with a heap of pickled cabbage and carrot with a tang of pepper.  There's nothing better after downing a few beers.

Oh sweet plaintains, how I love you...

Tastes like homecooked food. I love the rice dishes. The salsa with the chips have the right amount of spice in it. I am a Sriracha addict to give you a perspective of my standards. The lomo saltado is to die for. Great for the wallet too. The only con is that the service is a little slow but it's definitely worth the wait.

Went here for a quick eat. Had my first pupusa here but was sorely disappointed. It was pretty bland and greasy. I tried the beef and cheese and the mix pupusa (pork, cheese and beans). It was OK for me. Apparently, some people put those pickled vegetables ontop of it and drizzle the salsa on it, too so I tried it. It was alright.

I had ordered a glass of their horchata and it was surprisingly refreshing. Totally different in taste if you get it at a mexican taqueria but their horchata was creamier and less sweet. I liked it.

Panchita's reminds me of having dinner at an old aunt's house. Don't come here for the ambiance, come here for the food and especially the prices. We spent $18 on dinner which is NOT BAD but I wished their pupuas were more flavorful.

After a lovely night out dancing (and sitting) to various forms of funtastic tunes, Aaron V. and I decided we should probably eat something.

"You know what I'd really love right now?" I said, "A pupusa."

"What's a pupusa?" Aaron asked.

"Just, like, cheese and flour or whatever.  It's Mexican.  It's delicious," I said.

"Where do they sell them?" Aaron asked.

"I don't know," I said, slightly dismayed.  "I just went with Nnekay and Mary...Maybe we can find pupusas around here at another place--I mean, we ARE in the mission..."

"Yeah," Aaron said.

We walked for a minute, crossed a street, and then I stopped, suddenly excited.

"Hey!" I said, "I think the place with pupusas is right over there!"

We quick stepped another block and as fate would have it found ourselves right at Panchitas doorstep.

"Awesome," we said.  We walked inside and split an order of two cheese pupusas.  The first bite was like Heaven, and we groaned in late night after-partying pleasure.

"This is so good," we said.  We shoveled pupusa and pickled cabbage into our mouths.

"Mmmmm," we said.  "SO GOOD!"

Panchitas is like that.

The super tacos are REALLY big here. Don't order 3. Even if you've been drinking for 4 hours and haven't eaten in 8 hours. They are good but don't order 3. In order of the best meats, I'd pick carnitas, then carne asada, then pollo.

I might have just been drunk and excited to get back to DYL but the check seemed to take FOREVER. We were there for almost an hour in total. Which two girls, both starving, ordering tacos shouldn't have taken an hour.

I had a great meal. It also helped that I had a few beers right before at a Happy Hour Event at Sports Basement on Bryant. I came in there with my gf and went all out. The papusas are $2.50 and if you want to get a Papusa with Been and Rice it's $6. The papusas were excellent. THey were good sized and they filled me up. I also ordered a damn good CHicken Tamale and a Puffy Taco Dish which for some reason was an Enchilada. I guess that's how they do it at El Salvadore? Maybe it was a cordito? I'm not sure but either way it was very good. THe one advice I have for people who come to this place is not to order the Mexican dishes unless you get a Burrito. The Burritos are huge and you get what you pay for $7. The other Mexican meals did not look particularly that great. I would stay in the Appetizer/Papusa section and there's nothing you will regret. The waiter (or the guy in the counter) was very friendly too. He kept convincing me to order more as I'm sure he knew I was drunk. So I kept ordering and I kept eating. Then he thought I would like a Corona so I got one too. The result was me feeling hella full and sleepy. I went in a Cab Ride and then got home and collapsed since I was so full.
The only thing I wish was a bit better was the salsa. To me it seemed like Tomatoe Juice with Spices.

Gawd I just want to eat here EVERY FRIKKIN DAY!!   RAWR!

Thanks to the wonderful world of yelpland, I found out about this terrific little Salvadorian restaurant.  The pupusas are some kinda amazing (and hello! they're $2 a piece!), but it's really the cabbage that makes these babies soooo yummy!  I could seriously eat bowlfuls of the cabbage.

Other good things to try are the plantain empanadas - perfectly caramelized on the outside, and soft, hot and gooey and sweet on the inside, and the tamales - esp the corn tamale, mmm!

A hot doughy spinach, bean and cheese pupusa with dribbled on (or most likely piled upon) fresh crispy slaw and hot sauce is one of the best things you could treat yourself to on a long cold Saturday Mission bar hopping night.

Even more exciting is you'll probably savor and enjoy Panchita's tasty menu more -sober.

While Panchita's is not exactly a secret in the area, people sometimes forget about it, so if you go right before the bars get out at 2:00am, you'll have no line, a seat, and a fresh cooked meal in no time.

Next time you're craving a bacon-hotdog after you stumble out down Mission street - try Panchita's instead. Their burritos are also pretty good.

Perhaps it was because of the holiday  weekend and they were short of staff, but we were really disappointed with the service.

*We waited and waited to get our menus, so we helped ourselves after 10 minutes.

*After another 20 min. of trying to make eye contact with a server, my friend walked right up to the counter to ask if we can place our order...

**we should've just gone a couple doors down to a taqueria, but we were trying really hard to be nice.**

*after another 5 min. of waiting, we finally placed our orders (a simple 3 burritos)...got warm crispy chips, salsa, and waters shortly after.

*after another 30 min. (and another basket of chips) we inquired about our 3 burritos...we were told it would take another 6 min. saying they were backed up on their orders (as we looked around at a restaurant less than 1/3 full).

*we hungrily looked over at the next table as the guy left...eyeing his chips.

*Finally got our food after about an hour's wait.  Pretty good.  But at that point everything tasted great.

*My friend bumped into a former colleague.  As we were packing up to go, he asked to have our left over chips...

After walking from Market and 16th, past a sea of lesbians (yes, I'm serious) that were part of Saturday's march, we settled down for some pupusa love at Panchita's.  The restaurant was fairly full with parties of 8 or more, so we were lucky to snag a table for four at the front of the restaurant right by the window.

Service was a little bit slow, however, to get us place settings, chips, or menus for that matter.  It took about 10 minutes for them to finally take our order, as well, but I was in good company, so it really didn't matter that much to me.

I ordered my usual 3 pupusas revueltas, a fried plantano, and an horchata.  The pupusas were awesome.  Nice and crispy on the bottom and the filling spot on.  The plantano was freaking awesome and had a nice cream fried along on the inside (it seemed, anyway).  The curtido was, eh, curtido, and I was a little disappointed that there was no sauce to go along with it.  So, I was left to eating it with just the curtido.  Sad.  I know.

Now, this would have been a three star review if it weren't for one thing ... the horchata.  It was the real deal, kids.  It was made from real rice where I could actually taste the grittiness, and seasoned really nicely with some cinammon and sugar.  For that alone, Panchita's deserves an additional star.  Yum.  Yum.

Prices for the evening were extremely reasonable.  For the four of us, it only cost $35 (that's including tax and tip!).  Definitely worth a try if you're in the area!

Okay, just so we've got it straight...
I'm overstuffed with two pupusas and the accompanying pickled cabbage and I only spent how much? Four dollars and some change? Really?

Hell yes! And my pupusas were made to order... no heating up of pre-made food here. I saw the lady go back into the kitchen and make my filled doughs of yumminess!

The longest food line at the Dolores Park Cinco de Mayo celebration last weekend was for this place. You best believe I stood in it, too. Can't keep me away from my pupusas and plantains!

Went here last night because my bestie was too hungover to go much further than here and back to her place *cough*Natalie N.*cough*. Being the great friend that I am, and being so hungry I could eat a hobo, I didn't mind. I love me some pupusas and I REALLY love me some platanos con frijoles y crema (plantains, refried beans and sour cream to you gringos/as).
So that's what I ordered. Platanos con frijoles y crema and two (they make you order a minimum of two) pupusas, pork and cheese and cheese and lofrocata (some kind of edible flower that tastes kind of like broccoli).
Then we waited for like 15 minutes for our food.
Once we got it, we walked back to Natalie's to watch a Tivoed episode of "Intervention" cuz it makes us feel really good about ourselves to know we may be fucked up but we ain't THAT fucked up.
My pupusas were greaseballs. Seriously...SO greasy. That's not to say it's a bad thing but....actually yeah...it's a bad thing.  I didn't care for the one filled with lofrocata flower or wtf that green broccoli-ish thing was but that was my own damn fault. The pork and cheese was awesome but, again, very greasy. The platanos con frijoles y crema was meh which made me really sad. The beans sucked and had that grayish brown color that I have never seen outside of cafeterias or those red Banquet frozen dinners they sell 10 for $10 everywhere and that taste like ass.
OMG did Anthony Bourdain just liken the taste of something to "taint"? Sorry...now we are watching "No Reservations" but that comment really applied to my frijoles.  The sour cream was not that great either but the plantains were awesome.  Just perfect.
John Stewart, you are so funny it's almost criminal!
Anyways...obviously now watching The Daily Show.
I guess this place is okay but I still think the best is El Santaneca for pupusas and platanos con frijoles y crema.
However, Natalie N.'s house still gets 5 stars for best use of Tivo!

So they definitely don't specialize in burritos but my co workers had some pupusas and said they were "off the hook".

Really nice service, fairly quick especially if you call in ahead of time. Otherwise, from what I hear, they'll take a while since it's restaurant style. (Rhyme time!)

Will be back, esp since I work in the mish now.

I went last night with a buddy because we noticed that they had chimichangas on the menu in the window. I haven't found a REALLY good chimi near my crib and we decided to go in. For some reason, I decided against the chimi and went for some other food (pork chop, rice and beans) my buddy got some pupusas.
We waited, no joke, an hour for our stuff.
I had ordered a side pupusa and they brought me that and brought my budd'ys pupusas (wrong ones, but he said fuck it cuz he was hungry)

One of the local groups of mustached musicians came in and played but weren't very good, but were incredibly loud. I had seen the dudes before and heard them play better, but this was just bad.
Maybe its not Panchitas fault for my dissatisfaction.
A woman came in to pick up some food and smelled like rank piss that just stayed in there long after she left.
I was sitting right next to the counter and that smell just stayed with me through my whole experience. It sucked.

Pupusas were ok. I d be down try the other ones they offer.
The service SUCKED!
Way slow, and forgetful.

You can't escape the occasional bum coming in and singing America the Beautiful.
The food: Their pupusas weren't that good, but they're cheap. The tamales are OK; different but nothing spectacular (they add olives and garbanzo beans). The seafood soup is actually pretty decent but it takes forever to eat and de-bone. It's not particularly clean, and the service is minimal. Try those powder sugar cookies on your way out; really good. They do take credit cards.

Go For The Tamales and Pupusas!: Went to Panchitas with friends and since it's a Salvadorean place we had to try the Pupusas. We had heard it was also good for the Tamales so we tried some of those as well. Altogether both were pretty good. Also tried the chille rellenos and one of their soups which were ok only. So dunno when I'd go back but if I did I'd stick with the Tamales and Pupusas.

I'll be honest, the atmosphere is lacking.  However, the yummyness of the food and the low prices is totally worth it.  Service is pretty decent, considering the setting.
The pupusas con queso y loroco and the casamiento are my favorites, but everything I've had here has been great.  I am only denying them the 5th star because that belongs to Los Cocos.  This is a great place to stop if you need to sop up some alcohol from the bars.
P.S. Do not confuse this w/ Panchitas #3!

My boyfriend had the pupusa and let me try it, I wanted to snarf all of his food down at once. The mixed one with pork that he got were amazing. I on the other hand wanted something breakfasty since it was brunch time. I ended up getting eggs and chorizo which I usually love like crazy, but the  chorizo was so super greasy and hard to chew. In fact it made me cringe a little bit biting into hard chunks of masked fat. I've never had that fatty or gross of sausage. I was really disappointed.

I also felt kind of bad for the woman who was serving people too. She seems like the mom type. She was taking orders (only one) as well as bringing food back to tables. I figure there was probably one guy in back cooking too, if not two. Either way, it was a bit of a wait to get our food. And word to the wise, when you're done, go up to the register to pay. We were kind of sitting there wondering what to do about getting the check as we wanted to get out and go for a walk to check things out around the area. It was a little gross to see the server woman dropping food or water on the floor once in a while though (on accident but still she was too busy to really go clean it up) it just made me feel a mini bit gross eating there.

I would return for some pupusas though for sure.

Can you say pupusa?  That's all I need to know when I come here.  The pupusas make me drool in anticipation and I love the pickled cabbage that comes with them.  A platter with rice and beans equals a perfect lunch for me.  I've also had a few other dishes including the lingua tacos... who knew I'd like tongue?  The enchiladas verdes pretty much blew away some of the other places I've frequented in the neighborhood.  I always enjoy the plantain empanadas for dessert because I just can't resist that creamy filling.  As for drinks... hey... they have tamarindo here and that always scores points with me.

The only downside is that you really do have to wait a long time to get your food.  Luckily, I don't mind because when I have been there I've seen the ladies in the kitchen and they look like they know exactly what they're doing... and they only have one person working in front usually.  At least while I wait for my order they have chips and salsa.  The kind of salsa I prefer actually - thin and just spicy enough.

It's a good thing I don't live next door or I'd be there all too often for lunch or a late snack.

The first thing you Americans need to know (I'm an American too by the way) is that when you're dealing with Salvadoran ettiquette, the attitude is one that can best be summed up by the euphemism "...take it easy".

Coming into a pupuseria with a pretentious attitude such as one being rushed and flustered and just overall a hot mess and expecting snappy service will get you a prolonged delay in your exotic meal being delivered to your table.  Be respectful to the little ladies, and realize the culture of the Salvadoran community when it comes to food is one where you relax and enjoy the conversation with your company.

If you need some speedy service you can politely let the waitress know that you have a limited amount of time, at the time she takes your order.

I love this place and the little ladies that work there gossiping in the back, are really cool.  The place could use a revamping but otherwise the food is good.

Tip: to get the waiter/waitress to come bring you your check or food- wave your hand in the "please come here" fashion,
while making this noise:  " chhhh-chhhh-chhhhh"
which means, indirectly, "over here please".

=] Try it

This is strictly after drinking food... when you have had a borderline amount of sangria's... this will help soak some of it up... may provide you with a coronary... but then again... you had sangria... red wine will help counter act that... right?

This place has slow service, the food is not the best... but it is open late and it can provide tons of entertainment after a night of fun.

It is also very cheap...you do get what you pay for though..

Since most of you will never make it to Chez Maria D's Momma, come to Panchita's instead for the Next Best Thing. The bistec encebollado (steak w/ onions) is very, very close to my mom's version, but please, never tell her that. My mom thinks her cooking is a unique snowflake but she is oh so wrong. They even have her ice berg lettuce salad w/ Italian dressing and some avocado. Almost like being at my mom's house. Except at Panchita's, we were not given a 2 hour Dominican history lesson, which is what you would be subjected to at my house.

Panchita's also has  best pupusas I've ever had (thick & cheesy, not tiny like some other Mission pupuserias) and really wonderful refried beans. The horchata is really interesting, like a thin mexican chocolate milk. I usually don't order it, but my dining companion did and then the matronly waitress basically ordered it for me. See, just like being at Mom's house!

Wikipedia says, "The Salvadoran pupusa (from Pipil pupusawa) is a thick, hand-made corn tortilla (made using masa, a maize flour dough used in Latin American cuisine) that is stuffed with one or more of the following: cheese (queso) (usually a soft Salvadoran cheese called Quesillo), fried pork rind (chicharrn), chicken (pollo), refried beans (frijoles fritos), or queso con loroco (loroco is a vine flower bud from Central America). There is also the pupusa revuelta (with mixed ingredients of all three)."

Charlene L. says, "Pupusas are tasty bastards you can get at Panchita's #2." This is where I fell in love with the tasty treat, and highly recommend it! I like the cheese and refried beans, and you can expect the place to be filled a la San Francisco: punks, families, suits and earth mamas. So you'll feel at home. Even at 1 in the morning.
