Review Highlights
i really really wanted pineapple fried rice. i was craving it. but the only menu i could find in my apartment belonged to Panang. there are a few thai restaurants closer to where i live, but i decided to give them a shot.
geesuschrist, everything on the menu was expensive! its was $9.50 for the rice i wanted. looking at the rest of the items, most of the appetizers were in the seven dollar range and entrees were around ten bucks. i called them up anyway and placed my order with the guy that answered the phone. he seemed to not know what he was talking about... he didnt know what the total for my order was and he was guesstimating the pick up time. uhhhhh.... alright. i wanted to pay with my card, but your bill is suppose to be over $15 to do so, so he tells me "i dont think they'll let you do that." whos "they'? and you "dont think"? what the eff.
i arrive to pick up my food, and you can tell the restaurant is a total mom n pop place. feels homey and quaint once you step inside. the minute i get in the car with my food i rip open the bag to see if the rice was worth the ten bucks i just coughed up. it wasnt in the largest styrofoam container ive seen, but if i needed to feed a family of four i could probably do so.
i was kind of disappointed once i started eating it. the rice didnt taste fresh outta the wok. i figured it was because it had been sitting on the counter for 20 mins continuously steaming inside the container. the rice itself was a little bland, but it had lots of extras inside. even chicken. chicken? the menu didnt say there would be chicken in my rice. what if i was a vegetarian? what if i wanted more than 3 pieces of f*cking shrimp? what if i DIED because i had no idea that what was going in my mouth?! if they ran out of shrimp, i dont think its acceptable to substitute it with something else without asking me first. but i ate it anyway.
i had thought about giving them another shot, but in the end i could care less. how can you mess up on something as simple as rice?? they serve pretty much every other type of asian cuisine, but i wouldnt trust that either if they cant even get their home-countrys food right.
Are Panang's weirdly tenacious enthusiasts just wrong? (Yes.)

I m just going to lay it on the line, this place was toted as the best Thai place in LA to me by my friend. I have eaten Thai food all across the world so we drove all the way from Santa Monica to this place. And I am so sorry I did, because this place a disappointment.
This place offers a wide variety of food, its not just Thai, they have sushi and all manners of cuisine for consumption here, and they are open late. We left at like 10:30pm and more people were coming in. To a new place I eat what the cuisine is known for because if they can't get it right, they might as well be a "gastropub" of some sort. I ordered me a penang curry with white rice, my friend had a fried noodles with veggies and gravy. My friends smoothie took as much time as if I went to the grocery store, and the department store to get the blender and the ingredients. Than the food, my curry had about a 2 on a scale of 10, when it came to the amount of spices I could taste, everything was drowned out by the heavy coconut mil and is about it.
My friend's veggies over fried noodles was something that resembles what I normally eat at a chinese diner except the noodles tasted funny (I cook the same type at home too) until I figured it out, the noodles weren't fried here, they were pre-made type fried noodles. No other form of frying into this shape would have produced the amount of oil it left on the food, at the same time maintaining the shape, and overall done-ness of the noodles. The veggies were cooked to the correct done-ness and yes the veggie gravy is a culinary piece that still eludes my cooking skills. My friend wanted a mango pudding desert which took forever for the waitress to come over.
Overall, I would have settled for fast food before this place again.
So the name of the restaurant is Panang Thai, correct? So, I have to admit that the Sushi Bar & the Chinese food on the menu is a little bit weird, but the Thai food is really good. It taste just like how my friends mom makes it. So, next time, if you're craving Pho, go to a Vietnamese restaurant, or if you're craving Sushi, go to a Japanese restaurant. It only makes sense that it would not taste as well as you would expect; afterall, you are at a THAI restaurant. Anyhow, Thai food pretty good. Delivery is a little bit slow (from previous experience), decor is a little outdated, but servers are friendly.
The good: Panang has good fried calamari and they serve beer.
The bad: They have some weird-ass shit on the menu. Not weird as in authentic, but weird as in, what the hell kinda Thai restaurant is this??!
It's never good when a restaurant does that thing where they try to please everyone. Panang has Thai food, sushi, Chinese-style food, and random vegan/vegetarian/American/whatever kinda crap on their menu, and none if it really stands out. Why don't you pick one thing, and really pwn at that? You know?
Also, every time I have ordered delivery from here, it has taken no less than 2 hours and the food just doesn't taste right; like it's not fresh or has suspect ingredients or something.
I'll order from here if I'm really desperate, but I've gotta say, it's pretty far down on the list.
I'm disappointed to see the bad reviews because I do like this place. But hey, to each his/her own. I like Panang for their extensive menu and friendly service. My favorites would have to be the beef panang and their pad thai- then again, you'd have to try really hard to mess up thai food.
I haven't been here in a while but I do remember them serving sushi... now, that I don't know about. Stick with the classics and you'll enjoy the grub.
I think I was being too excited about the fact they had vegan food. I have to really be honest its not that great. I will say that I still eat here for its convenience. Plus they deliver that's a good thing. Why the change of heart from my last review? Well, I got food deliver and though it wasn't terrible it wasn't great either. I had a bit of a tummy ache from it too.

I had never been here until I got a vegan menu of theirs in the junk mail. I think the vegan menu… Read more »
I have to admit, not bad when it comes to Thai.
The prices are good, and the food is alright, fills the need for Thai that is for sure.
They do have a Sushi Bar, but i tried it the last time i was in there, and the roll tasted as if it was store bought,, so i would not get anything from the sushi bar (unless you see the guy), come to think about it, i never saw the guy there when i ordered my rool, i am sure the rolls were sititng there in a fridge, but that is beside the point.
Staff is always friendly and accommodating, a plus in my book.
As for delivery, I have ordered only once and they were fast to deliver, never had a problem with time, but then again it was only once that i got a delivery from them, and i live 3 miles from them, go figure right.
Yeah that's right.. I'm a fan of Panang Thai, wanna fight bout' it?
Reasons why I'm a fan:
Service is always good to me here.
Great selection of various Asian food.
They have BOMB Calamari.
Any restaurant that serves Thai Iced Tea is a Star +1.
Pad Thai... ZOMG! mMMmM
A good friend of mine use to live around the area and we went here plenty of times for some good ol' bomb Pad Thai... MMmmm Don't forget the hot sauce!!!!!!!!! And Panang also had an outdoor area with heat lamps so if you feel like getting some fresh air while getting your eat on, or are a smoker like moi, then Panang is for you.
Panang is more Notorious than Mr. B.I.G. for their 2 hour delivery. Dude, Biggie is dead and I'm sure he could dig himself from the grave and deliver some mediocre food faster than Panang. There is nothing truly spectacular on the menu. I do like a few of their soups...and when I am lazy I like having Diet Cokes delivered. But seriously folks,Panang's customer service is pretty poor. When you call they ALWAYS tell you the driver is on his way. Well, if it takes the driver another hour to get to my house that's less than 3 miles away...I don't think I want that clammy food. I've called to cancel to only have the driver show up an hour after canceling the order. Never once are you offered a discount or a comp meal.
Panang should really change their name to Bloopers! But, I am the fool cos I continued to order from them year after year. Well, I have finally officially quit Panang. (They're like cigarettes!!! So bad, yet so hard to quit!!!)
The other day I called for delivery and they told me I should go pick it up cos they don't deliver to my address. Really? I'm in your delivery radius. And I've only been foolishly ordering your sub-par food for 7 years... I needed that wake up call!! I'm through with you!!! I do sincerely hope they get their act together cos I never want to see a restaurant fail. It was kind of neat that they added some veggie meats to the menu. Now all they need is better quality, consistency and a boost in customer service...
i'm sorry all of you haters but you must be very spoiled or something because panang is a-ma-zing. yes, you do have to wait a long time just to get water.. then to take your order.. and then to get your food. but, it's all worth it in the end. i've really never had something bad here. i've tried the sushi, pad thai, spring rolls, larb, pho, etc and haven't been disappointed. they'll even make things vegetarian for you if it's not on the menu.. like substituting tofu for meat and making sure the pho broth is meat-free. forgot about your friends birthday? perfect!.. they have a little kitschy knick-knack store right in the front. want a lotto ticket? they sell them!! how can you go wrong? so come down for some tasty thai, chinese, japanese, vietnamese, etc deliciousness.
Tried this place tonight with the family and enjoyed the food. We had Pad Thai and Garlic & Pepper Chicken and they were good. There was more sauce than most other Thai places, but the rice absorbs it up so no big deal. I like the fact that there is a sushi bar in there as well. We'll have to try something from that side of the place next time. I got 2 kiddies under 5 and they enjoyed themselves and had big smiles when the waitress asked them if they were enjoying the food. That was a plus for sure!
I grabbed 2 menus. 1 for the ride and the other for the pad. We'll be back to eat more from them again!
I don't ever think I can come here again. My stomach still turns from my first experience her. My boyfriend, roommate and I decided to stop in and try the food not long after moving into Eagle Rock. We were offed a little by the idea of a Thai restaurant that sold lotto tickets and should have left when we saw the "gift" shop at entrance, but despite this and the tacky decor we still sat.
We were greeted by our wacky looking server who was all smiles to a creepy extreme, and NEVER BLINKED! As he stood over us taking our drink order, we all silently noticed the nasty cliffhanger barely holding on to the rim of his nose!
OH MY EFFEN GOD!
Not unlike a car wreck, none of us could take our eyes off him and his disturbing distraction. We were waiting to see if he would handle his business-it was apparent he knew nothing about it.
He returned with our drinks and even after speaking to another server who was at direct eye level to see it, nothing had changed. We were too grossed out to order a full meal, and instead ordered satay to be polite.
When we got our food, we were relieved to still see our little friend kicking back on his face because that meant it wasn't in our food. We reluctantly shared our appetizer amongst the 3 of us, hoping our server's hygiene wasn't a reflection of the kitchen's, paid our bill and took off for Tommy's.
Never again. I swear.
I tried the House Special Beef Panang (red curry), the other day and it was very good. I will definitely order it again.

Avoid the sushi and stick to the Thai food when dining at Panang and you'll be fine.

if there is any justice in this world, this restaurant will burn down. when i first tried this restaurant, i thought, ok, so i shouldn't have ordered the pho, they're a thai restaurant, order something thai next time.
i ordered the bbq ribs, which were unspectacular, and that would've fine, if not for their fried rice. on the side was a tiny lump of the foulest smelling shrimp fried rice i've ever tried to force down. and i mean this shit was wrong. the shrimp was rotten or rancid, the smell was just overwhelming.
i'm at my office, starving, and i decide to try their delivery. i order the pad thai, thinking how on gods green earth could anyone ever fuck up pad thai, only to be wonderfully surprised. there IS, in fact, shrimp in the panang version of pad thai, which rendered the entire plate inedible.
no one has given panang more chances then i have, and i can honestly say, never again. i've contemplated buying good viet food and good thai food and force feeding their cooks, just so they'll form some inkling of what the fuck they've been trying to do. assuming they're even trying. this joint needs to close, come on. thai food? viet food? sushi? like adding more terrible shit onto your menu will help.
Thai Food. Sushi Bar. CA Lottery Central. Gift Shop Of Weird Asian Junk. Hmmm...very interesting. It all seems a little odd, but it's a passable place to eat. I only do takeout from here, as the bright blue interior doesn't make my food more appetizing - sitting in front of my TV is much more appealing than sitting in one of their neonish vinyl booths. They were originally a Thai place, but decided to put in sushi bar a couple of years ago. They try to draw customers with 50% off sushi prices if you dine in, but you pay full price if you do take out. I'm always stuck paying full price. It's not super high-end sushi, but if you wanted that, you wouldn't come to a thai place that serves sushi in the first place, right? It works if you're in a pinch and really need to fulfill your sushi craving.
My (waaay, overly-picky) honey refuses to eat at this place; he claims all their dishes have a fish taste --- even the dishes that don't have any seafood in them. I don't taste it, but if you have extremely discerning tastebuds and are anti-seafood, then you might not like this place.
All in all, it's an OK, but not great place to eat.
So after 2 and a half hours of waiting for my food, they finally delivered it- cold and leaking. It's mediocre too. Don't bother. Try Thai Thai- they are the best.
If you ever want the most random Thai inspired yet Pan-Asian restaurant, go to Panang. There's a random section of "for sale" items filled with kitchy items and the decor is very hole-in the wall inspired.
As for the food, their Japanese menu isn't anything worth getting, though it's not any worse than your regular mall Japanese food. However, their Thai selection is pretty decent.
My two favorite dishes here are their Beef Panang and their Heavenly Noodle. The Beef Panang is a Thai curry that's actually has a kick to it. The beef is nice and tender and the curry is so good, I could just pour it on my rice and eat it as is. As for the Heavenly Noodle, a very sweet sauce with chicken, veggies and shrimp over crispy egg noodles. Yum.
The best part about Panang isn't so much the dining in, it's the Take out or Delivery around Eagle Rock. So, if you're hungry for something more than fast food and don't feel like cooking, definitely call this place.
A neat little Thai place with a small sushi bar.
Service is a little spotty but the prices are excellent and the lunch special is great. Their Panang Beef lunch special is about 6 bucks and comes with rice and a salad.
For take-out or lunch they are a good destination. For dinner, try White House Thai across the street.
Second time eating here; first time was better. I'm not too into the mini store filled with junk when you first walk in. Right off the bat, when we were ordering, we saw that on the front of the menu, it said "10% Off with Student ID", so we was like "Score!". I am a student and my other half is not, so I busted out my ID. The waitress said, in quite the hostile manner, that we would need TWO STUDENT IDs if we wanted to get the discount. Then my other half got into it with her and they got into a catfight. She gave us the 10% off, and was huffy with us the rest of the meal. We had the pad thai, which was OK, but a bit mushy; and the papaya salad, which was good. I'd say this place gets a 2.5. I think we need to look elsewhere for thai food in eagle rock.
Alright. I never give out negative reviews....until now. I tried to like this place, I really did. Until I basically got kicked out and told to hurry up and eat cause they were closing....Fu*k that we were there for 5minutes eating - I timed it. My friend asked to get a container so he could take the rest of his soup home and our waiter was like "oh, you can finish it". WTF is that? If he could finish it he wouldn't be asking you for a container to take it home now would he? Just get the container so we can take the food we PAID for. I can't believe this freak'n place.
i use love this place but over the years it has gone down quite a bit... i've ordered nearly the whole menu
there has been times when one food item is pretty good then other days they are just alright, at least i know that their food isnt just frozen stuff that they microwave because that wouldve brought out constant crap tasting flavored food but not this place you get consistent okay foodies
their pad thai was so yummy before and consistent with flavor but i guess they fired their cook or something because the pad thai on certain weeks is okay and other days it's a big OMG WTF
good cheap asian meals, i say asian because they dont have one particular flavor its a wide region of asian flavors
OOooooooh lawd, where do I even begin with this place.
PANANG Restaurant in Eagle Rock = HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE Customer Service (or lack thereof).
And the quality of their food is super terrible! The last time my friends and I were there, the food was pretty much INEDIBLE!! I felt so nauseous after eating barely any of the entree I ordered.
The orange chicken rice we ordered tasted like ketchup was the main ingredient. Um, gross!!
The seafood noodles was so disgusting that we had to order a side of peanut sauce (which ended up being literally peanut butter and a little water) to replace the nasty flavor. The seafood was not fresh, and we had been served the scraps and leftover parts of crustaceans (i.e., the knuckle of a dungeness crab -- um....so how are we supposed to find any crab meat in there?). It was just inedible and we felt so gross after only a couple bites.
The veggie gyoza was okay, pretty mediocre. I forget what else we had ordered.
When it came time to pay the bill, our friend just had to send back the fried rice which we only had 2 bites from to the kitchen. The lady/waitress/hostess? seemed a bit reluctant to take it back but she said she would take care of it.
When she returned with our bill, I had to just send back our Seafood noodles. It was all still there on the plate, inedible as ever. The Panang older lady rolled her eyes at us, took a deep breath and then proceeded to claim that she was not the manager (even though homegirl is ALWAYS working at the front and closing every time we've been there, she just looks like she runs the show). She said she HAS to charge us for ALL of the items we ordered because all of the ingredients come out of the Kitchen's paychecks??!! Seriously we were all like WTF? That makes no sense girl!! If the quality of the food at your establishment is not up to par and is solely inedible, how can you expect your customer to pay for this. We did not want to cause a scene, so we just all paid in full with cash. I kept the receipt. Mind you the old hag STOOD there breathing over our shoulders while we all counted our money to pay for our bill.
When she grabbed our money, our friend said, "Oh yeah, and the extra change left over goes to the waitress that actually helped us." Oooooh that old hag was pissed haha she deserved it. She was so rude to us, and completely lied to us about EVERYTHING. He lame daughter even yelled out, "That's enough!" and walked her back to the cash wrap. LOL, as if homegirl could not walk on her own, she was fine. She's just having a case of Pinocchio. I have never!
I still have the receipt somewhere from that tragic dinner event. I do not plan on going to Panang again, and it's just not worth it to ask for our money back. They are a hot tranny mess! So not worth it. I'm just super bummed because this was like our 5th time there!! They're pho is the best item there, but everything else is just bleh.
Panang should not be in business. Zero food quality, zero class and zero customer service. Is there any reason why they should still have their lights on?? Seriously.
Please go to Full House in Chinatown (Hill Street). They are open late, and are tranny friendly!! lol Mmmmm honey walnut prawns, yessssss!!
THE WORST restaurant experience I have had in years. Seriously, can I get a zero stars? Just pretend it's zero stars. I went with my heart set on a Rainbow Roll, happy to have discovered their yummy takeout the other day. First off, they were "out" of sushi. At 7:30pm. Second, it took twenty minutes (and a wave-down) to even get someone to our table. The two waitresses had three tables and us (one couple) between them, there was no excuse. They did everything BUT take our order--they wiped down tables, talked with kitchen staff, restocked condiment containers (seriously!). Finally got to order. Ten MORE minutes later they show up with my drink and tell us they are out of the appetizer we ordered. So we order Spring Rolls. Then my curry comes out. No rice, just the curry. That sits on the table about five minutes, then pad thai comes. Still no appetizer. In the meantime it has been absolutely freezing in the restaurant. You could see the breeze blowing the blinds and even swinging the lights. But the doors were closed...so I don't know if they had the air on or what. When the waitress brought our spring rolls, I asked if there was any way to turn down the A/C, or turn on heat. Before I could finish my sentence she said "We don't have air conditioning," and walked away without any other remark. By the time the rice came, my date was almost done with his dish, my curry had grown cold, and and we'd been sitting at that table going on an hour. On our way out (giving up on having a bill retrieved from us), we saw a SPACE HEATER under another couple's table (and several more unplugged, along the wall). At that point it was so bad it was laughable. I know that rude people get bad service, but let me be clear--we were polite and patient. I did not complain or take an "attitude," even when it was appropriate. I will never eat here again, and though their Thai is acceptable, there are plenty of other places that treat their customers better here in Eagle Rock.
I go to Panang every once in a while with my friends and yea, this place is kind of weird as others have said but I've never had a problem with the service or food. Service is always decent or good and the food is always good. I haven't tried something that I didn't like here.
The Pad-Thai, Chicken fried rice, Hot & Sour soup all tasted delicious. The pho was a little different but I liked it. Some friends didn't like it so much but I thought it was fine. Panang is definately just a place to go for some decent food, nothing too special about it but it is affordable and tasty.
so its a Thai restaurant that serves sushi, but while your walking in you can buy porcellien cups and vases? huuuuuuuh? i dont get it.
this place is kind of festive i guess but the food isnt as good as hollywood Thai food in Little Saigon. Maybe because its meant to please the EagleRock artsy fartsy peoples.
im more into asian street vendor food.
besides that, ordered the cha po and it was ok. the pork was kinda dry but the duck was nice and greasy how i like it.
3 stars for panang............ mang....!!!!!
Great Thai restaurant in the Pasadena/Eagle Rock/Glendale area. Large diner-like interior -- true Eagle Rock camp. While their menu is not as dirgy and happenin' as some of the places in Thai Town, they do have a lot of unique selections such as the fruit curry, a yummy pad kee mow, and great soups. A friend of mine ordered the seafood dumplings in green curry sauce -- something I'd never had before --and they were delicious. You can even mix it up and order from the sushi menu, which is acceptable. They are also now offering Pho, but you'll soon be able to get that across the street at Lemongrass.
I remember now why i got a Yelp account, its to avoid places like this. This place SUCKS. Its a bad rip off of Noodle Planet. Prices are high. Portions are not proportionate with the price. Taste was non existent. My sister, Girlfriend and I ordered: Fried Wontons, Shrimp Cakes, Beef Panang, Sizziling Seafood, and some kind of Beans with chili sauce. Fried wontons were just that no filling at all, some pieces had something that looked like chicken. The beef in the beef panang was tough and the cocunut milk seemed to be the only thing in it. the sizziling seafood was awful. it was too salty and tasted like burnt oyset sauce. we were expecting crab claws and muscles just like the picture showed. instead we got imitation crab meat and a plate of over cooked squid. the shrimp cake was okay, they must have been sourced from outside of the resturant. the best thing that came from there was the sweet and sour sauce that came with the shrimp cake and fried wontons. that too must have came from out side the resturant, maybe a bottle brand. they did however manage to get an "A", how i dont know? the bathrooms were disgusting. stay far away from this place, id rather suggest eating a box of paper clips.
The first time I went here, I could have written a 5 star review of the place afterwards, as for the second, third, and fourth time. But... then it really went downhill. So, I loved this place, and went the sixth time, seventh time, and eighth, thinking, maybe it was just a down season. I actually really like the place. But the food is not nearly as good as it once was, and I'm not sure why. Kinda sucks to be honest, because I liked it so much, but I can't rate it less than 3 stars because 50% of the times I've been there it was amazing. So... I've taken a while off, and have yet to go again, so soon, when I work up the nerve to try it out again, I hope it's back up to par, but in the meantime, it's only gettin' 3 stars from me.
I'd have to give this place 3 stars for the dine in, when you dine in, its not as bad as ordering something for take out or delivery. For some reason when you dine in, they give you way more food.....Here's the deal...I came here to dine in and ordered the BBQ Spare ribs combo, It was cool...the fried rice was hooked up, they gave me like 5 pieces of ribs and I was happy....a few weeks later, I decided to have the same meal delivered. When i got the order and opened it, I had a box full of rice with 2 small ass pieces of ribs....I felt burnt! So I called and complained and whoever I spoke to on the phone just said that is the order and I already paid and I couldnt return it....I asked them to atleast give me some extra ribs with all this rice and they were going to charge me so I said forget it.....wackness.
Food here is nothing too special to write about, but I do think it's better than Eagle Rock Thai and Thai Spirit which are also nearby. The thing that makes this place so awesome is that they sell licorice flavor Mentos...very yummy! I'm a huuuuge fan of Grape flavor Mentos that I got in Japan.
initially, this restaurant advertised as a thai restaurant.. but when you look @ the menu, it's a bit confusing. they have japanese, chinese, thai, and i don't remember what else. i remember ordering pad see ew, and the meat being a bit dry & not as flavorful as other restaurants. pad see ew is my favorite thai dish. if you can't get that one right, then i've lost faith.
people are not so friendly, food is just ok. they open late so that's a plus but I don't know if I would go there when other places are open.
i ate at panang for th veery first time. i really liked it right when they gave us the menu, they had a whole variety of foods like, japanese, chinese, filipino ,thai. when i walked in the door i didnt even know what they have, and it turns out they have a lot of different foods. it was really yummy!!! from the first time i tried it, i go back there alot!! n i spread the worrd!!! i luved it verry much!
