Review from Allison C.
New York, NY
This place is right down the block from me, and I remember one of my roommates RAVING about this place as soon as we moved in this past summer. Granted, it took me a surprisingly long time to meander down there myself...like, four months. Haaa. (So I'm a little slow...)
If I could live on their cinnamon rolls, chocolate croissants, and strawberry cheese croissants without any major health risks or weight gain, I would. Actually, that is a bold-faced lie. I think I could live on them. I'd take the risk. Better start stocking up on larger clothing and Lipitor now.
DELICIOUS.Listed in: My Fantabulous Old 'Hood, A Taste of Columbus...

Sadly, Pan Plus has closed.
Nonetheless, it once had a pretty solid iced coffee and beautiful looking pastries. Outside sitting was a nice perk, too. -

As I've said/hinted in other reviews...I am very French and I love most French staples: crêpes, smelly cheeses, pastries, and above all bread. Imagine my delight when I walked by Pan Plus and discovered that they had freshly baked baguettes in the window!
I bought one, not too expensive, and mon dieu! was I ever happy I did! Fresh, flaky, perfect french bread. YUM. I will be back to try out their pastries.Listed in: Manhattan Valley

Delivery, nightmare. Waited over an hour for delivery.. estimate on Seamlessweb (La Baguette) says 25-35 min. If they aren't going to ever deliver in this timeframe, they should change it.
I ordered a turkey/cheese BAGUETTE sandwich, I got a panini.. smothered in mayo, no less. That wasn't included in the menu descriptions. If they were out of baguettes, in the time it took to deliver my order, they could have baked me one.
My ham/cheese croissant had been smashed in the panini grill to the point of being almost unrecognizable and it was burnt.
Cinnamon roll was huge, but half stale. The parts that weren't stale were pretty damn good and being half stale and half inedible probably saved me a lot of calories I really didn't need.
Delivery boy brought a coupon for 15% off, so maybe I will try out the actual place... delivery is no go for now. -

I'm a regular at Pan Plus, so it won't surprise you that my review is glowingly positive. Despite the bias, I can speak as one who has tried almost everything they offer, from their bread to sandwiches, quiche to brownies. Not everything is 5-star quality, but everything you'd expect a French bakery to do right, they deliver on.
If they have something fresh, coming right out of the oven, try it. Don't even ask, just try it.
As for specific reviews, their sandwiches are hand-made with care (albeit slowly) and are fantastic, all on fresh bakes bread. Their spinach pies, spiral-rolled flaky crust covering a creamed spinach and feta mixture, are excellent. So, too, are their croissants (try the ham and swiss -- you'll be surprised), baguettes, bread pudding, brownies, and every dessert in their tempting display.
Now, I must acknowledge the misses, as some have reviewed this establishment solely on these items: the cupcakes and chocolate cookies are nothing special, and the danishes (I was told) were added at the request of the middle schoolers who flood the bakery before class. Also worth noting, this bakery doesn't offer the fastest service.
When it's all said and done, though, Pan Plus is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood. With all of the corporate restaurants and bars (and Chase banks) springing up in this neighborhood, it's nice to go to a real (and literal) mom-and-pop bakery. -

If I ever open up a bakery with my current baking skill, I think this will be the bakery. Everything looks slightly off from the traditional bakery goods, and the taste is certaintly fresh, but not the best I've had.
The lady at the counter couldn't locate the plain croissant right in front of her, so I had to point out to her. I thought that was quite hiliarious. -

This morning it was MY turn to satisfy the bread cravings of the Italian/French couple. The LSAT is slowly stealing my girlfriend away so I must coax her back with the one thing I know will work: baguettes from Pan Plus.
Bonus points for being a 3 minute walk from my apt. Additional bonus points for taking less than half that time to retrieve the desired baguettes for a whole $4.50 and sending me on my merry way out the door. And I guess bonus points for their "outdoor seating"? AKA: 4 dinky little fold-up chairs painted a shade of baby blue that were lined up facing the street. This must be why the two people I saw sitting at the counter had chosen the indoor seating option. Pan Plus will forever remain a takeout place for me.
P.S. For those of you who are wondering, she did come back to me when I walked in with the baguettes. It was short lived though. She is now enjoying her baguette while studying for the LSAT. The best of both worlds. She'll make a damn good lawyer...Listed in: Manhattan Valley

New York, NY
This is by far the best french bakery north of 96th. They are comparable to Balthazar. The croissants are flaky and baguette, freshly baked on request while you wait, strikes the balance between crusty exterior and stretchy-soft interior. If you are lucky you will find corn-de-gazelle (Moroccan Marzipan) that are out of the world.
The danger is that the boulangiere drifts in his style as seen recently in the cup-cakes & other run-of-the-mill deserts. I hope they stay true to form and keep making the french pastries like the tarte au citron.
If this place was on broadway there would be a long line outside. -

"These apple croissants are hot out of the oven. Would you like one?"
Yes please!
Strong coffee, fresh baked bread and pastries, and a great sandwich menu that far exceeds in quality (if not quantity) anything in the area, all presided over by friendly lightly accented service in a tiny little shop on Columbus.
A few blocks north of the new shopping behemoth that is the behemoth Whole Foods/TJ Maxx/Michael's triumvirate, Pan Plus french bakery reminds me why little shops can be absolutely great too.
I wish more of the bodegas in the area would convert to fromagerie and boucherie and really commit the neighborhood to my fantasy of Manhattan Valley actually being Montmartre. But in the meantime, Pan Plus and their warm apple croissants are doing just fine on their own.Listed in: UWS? Harlem? SoHa? TomAto…

This is my favorite place in the neighborhood.
The owner once recommended the bread pudding. This evidently is the pièce de résistance here.
I've been back for it--
I would never in my life have consider eating bread pudding from anywhere else. -

It's all about the croissants here - flaky, tear-apart-able perfection, and even fresh near closing - thumbs up! The iced coffee and a croissant for $3.25 is pretty good, and you might catch a spot at one of the loosely strewn tables outside, one of which was right next to the corner public garden area, a nice combination of simple, cheap and urban.
Staff excellent. These are the small businesses that power us from recession to success. -

La Baguette/Pan & Plus (like the other, lonelier listing indicates) is a cool little joint on the corner. They boast a great selection, friendly service, and competitive prices. Got the $3 bread pudding, which was tasty but nowhere near approaching the best I've had (even within a 3-block radius).
Returned to check out some other offerings when it's less rainy and I have more cash. +5 for the Pastries: Cinnamon Teddy Graham-esque piece & a Honey Pastry (though he said honey and bagged a chocolate cookie--good thing I said something?)..Harsh Service + No Change For A $20 = -2Listed in: Sugaree

This place had incredible coffee and a top notch chocolate croissant. It's a bit small, but I wouldn't hesitate to go there again especially in the summer since more of the seats were outdoors.

Edited after a second visit. I thought it wasn't too bad at the first visit. The cheese danish was nice and flaky and the filling was not too sweet. But now I think it's awful. First of all, the service is slow as fuck. I had to wait, no lie, twenty minutes, to get a muffin and a croissant. When it was finally my turn, I asked for a raspberry-cheese croissant and a chocolate muffin. Well, when I bit into the croissant at home, I found out it was in fact an apple croissant, and a mediocre one at that. Oh, and it gets better. When I'm about half-way through, I find a short, black hair stuck to the croissant. Yummy! I threw out the rest. The chocolate muffin was also completely mediocre. Even mass-made ones at Westside Market are much better. I'm never going back.

Great croissants and pastries here. Perfect for a quick pit stop if you live in the area and are on your way out. I wouldn't necessarily make a trek out to see this place, especially since it's tiny and there really isn't any seating (aside from those two chairs out front), but it's definitely worth stopping by if you're in the area.

Delicious pastries for really good prices. The owner even gave me a free cup of coffee last time I was there, just because. Great little place run by really nice people.
