Cherice is right. Palmer Park indeed had a reputation of being a destination for gay men. So families were  turned off by the idea of visiting. I figured a park is a park and all people are every where. Not that Palmer Park would be my first choice any way but hey I was in the area and decided to ride through and take a quick swing. Yes, on a swing set.

The park is as I remember from childhood. My Mom worked afternoons so me, my Dad and my sister spent a lot of afternoons here. The park was clean, the greenery was bright and the swings were waiting for me. There were quite a few people on the bike and jogging trails. Some couples were getting there romance on while walking and holding hands.

I'm glad I read Cherice's review and decided to stop by. Getting my swing on made me feel young at heart and I burned some calories in the process.

For most of my life Palmer Park had a bad rap to it. It was known as the the "gay" park, and many people didn't go there unless they were homosexual. All others stayed away. And it wasn't just a myth...it was because around that neighborhood there were many business that catered to homosexual men. So Palmer Park was common meeting ground. Lately, however, I rarely hear Palmer Park spoken of negatively. You will still notice a lot of gay men, but it is also host a great golf course.  During the summer you will definitely see the park populated with those that want to go for a morning jog or a lunch recess. It's a decent sized park too, so it may be also good for group outings, such as a family reunion.

I live in Palmer Park and I am neither gay or Male. There are lots of heterosexual male and females livng in Palmer Park. This community offers some of the  most spectacular and spacious apartments around. I will admit that most of them could use a facelift and some internal updates.  I live here because I have a beautiful apartment, the park is close and there are bus lines to almost anywhere. I would love to see this community get the much needed repairs to restore its granduer!

Palmer Park IS a "gay" park. Some even call it a "gayborhood." What other explanation could there be for men all arriving in separate cars then coupling up in remote corners of its parking lots. But don't let that stop you from enjoying this historic beauty that was donated to the City of Detroit by former senator Thomas W. Palmer in 1893.  The 160 acres of land were part  of Senator Thomas' residential property.

The park was renamed in Senator Thomas' honor in 1908. Along with the name, the park's historic log cabin, light house and duck pond remain as charming relics from the days when Detroit was known as the "Paris of the Midwest" for its many trees. And not too long ago, nearby Highland Park was called the "City of Trees," at least until an infestation of Dutch Elm Disease took its toll.  But I digress.

Palmer Park is a clean, fairly well maintained destination for city residents or visitors who happen along Detroit's legendary main thoroughfare - Woodward Avenue. Tennis and biking remain good options. The swimming pool and bath house are still there but have been closed for many years.

Bring back the pool, I say. But the bath house might not be such a good idea. It sits right next to one of those parking lots.
