Review from Hank H.
Mountain View, CA
The Palm Motel and Cafe is owned by Martha who is 85 yr old. Every day Martha makes a large quantity of the menu items from scratch (pies, salads, roast pork dinners, etc.) After a very strenuous day out in the redwoods there is absolutely no better place to eat than at the Palm Cafe. Recently I had a roast pork dinner with homemade gravy, stewed carrots, candied yams, and new potatoes. The meal made me fall in love with Martha and the town of Orick.
I was also able to spend some time chatting with one Martha's sons, Jerry. He is of Native American decent and is just the coolest guy in town. When Jerry went to school the student body was over 200... now it is only 15. The decline of the lumber industry has severely affected this town.
Lastly, rumor has it that Martha also makes canned salmon from locally caught fish. If you're extra nice she may let you purchase a jar for $10 and even give you her famous salmon cakes and drip gravy recipe. -

We love the Palm Cafe. There are so few remarkable cafes left. Put this on your list for memorable visits or frequent visits. The regulars eat here everyday. We stop on the way north or before hikes on the beach. This morning, Martha had just made 7 different kinds of pies. Last week, she served 90 at a Cafe party. Turkey and ham are on the menu for Christmas. They are open every day of the year! Remarkable people working in this special place. Even the jam is homemade...no wasteful plastic cubes.
Priceless experience. Oh, and Martha buys veggies from local growers! -

This would just get three stars, since the food was just average and the service nothing special, but... the pie here is insanely good. The very best pie I have ever purchased, and this is coming from a woman who was raised to regard pie as chief among desserts, and the ability to make good pastry as one of life's foremost accomplishments. Made each day by the 85-year-old owner. So, go soon. And then camp at the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. It's pricey ($35/night), but it's 5-star camping (hot showers, spectacular things to do).

This place is amazing. Homemade jellys and jams, some of which uve never tried like kiwi jelly. Just fantastic. All meals are great there and the staff couldnt treat the customers better. Seriously some of the best food ive had in MTN country. They were really accomidating about wrapping things up special for us. so we can rehead some of our leftovers on our campfire. Did i mention the homemade jellys. again kiwi jelly. people this shit is so amazing. worst the 13 hour drive for the jelly

We stopped on the second morning of a long road trip. It was the perfect expression of diner food. Friendly service. Happy belly.

The best restaurant in Orick...of course, since the Mexican place across the street was closed, also the only restaurant in Orick. An adventure of 1950's diner life (not the cleaned up faux retro stuff you get in malls, but the real thang) the service is friendly though a bit slow, the cook doubles as a waitress and didnt look overly happy, the bolted down seats at the counter have loose bolts so dont move too quickly or you'll be grounded (literally!)..it looks like the food ingedients are all supplied by Costco, and the result is....greasy and unmemorable.....but if watching extremely obese locals and the occasional confused tourist is your thang, come on down!

Tired and hungry from a camping trip in the redwoods, we steered over here not expecting much but a greasy spoon, and it was. It's an old-school diner with lunch counters and bolted seats, various pies in a refrigerated display case and homemade fudge on the counter. We ordered burgers with crinkle fries, fountain Cokes and a dessert each of homemade banana cream pie and blackberry pie with a dollop of vanilla soft serve on top. Whoa. The service was friendly, the food fast and the grease--spot on.

let's just say the service really sucked. I am a waiter and I understand. But this guy was kind of an asshole. We tried to order dessert, but it just wasn't happening. We were afraid to ask Chief(I do not know his name) for anything, because anything that we had asked for, it seemed like we were bothering him. The woman that looked like she was the bus-girl was too busy stuffing her face with pie that she could not ever relay to Chief that we wanted to order some pie. Dude we are trying to give you money here! We waited patiently for 15 -20 minutes. Then we just paid and tipped(more that they deserved for sure) and bounced. If you want mediocre food and and horrible service, stop here. Other wise, cruise on down the cost to Eureka or Arcata. There are plenty of good spots to chow down at in those two towns. And if money is an issue hit the one of the many fast food joints. It's better, Trust me!
PS. Of course I had to get up and fill my own darn water.
