I usually forget about the places ( and people) that I take for granted.
And Palisades Park is one of those places.

I came to see my old friend, Palisades, early one morning with my two dogs. We were out for adventure, out on a cold dark morning, in the quiet before the city awakens and the streets are filled with sounds, sights and bustling energy.

I had forgotten how beautiful the view is here. Even on a dark morning, with clouds in the sky. More beautiful.
As we walked, I remembered all the times in the past, I had been here with boyfriends, for a few kisses on the benches, a truly romantic setting. Innocence.

And during the day, with relatives from out of town, always a nice place to walk and talk and just be.

If you are from out of town, you must stop by.
If you live here in this city Angels, you must stop by, don't forget about an old friend, as I had.
I revered this natural beauty that exists!
...and I only live about 10 minutes away.

I imagine the Santa Monica urban planners having this conversation:

"Well we planned out this beautiful seaside town .. but there's this super narrow bit of land right against the edge of the bluffs that we forgot to factor into our design .."

    "Any bright ideas?"

"Let's just wing it and  throw some grass, palm trees, bathrooms, benches, and paths down and see what happens - at least it'll look nice!"

    ".. .. .."

    "Alright, let's do that."

Well their 'mistake' turned into Palisades Park which doesn't disappoint. This park exists along Ocean Ave between California and San Vicente (where the official Palisades Park signs are placed). I loved running the dirt path as there is always the ocean on one side and busy SaMo on the other; I felt like I was literally running along the borderline between two alien worlds! Definitely a mixed crowd here with runners, artists, families, homeless, and exercise groups; a super eclectic mix that adds to the surreality of this park. The views of the ocean are also breathtaking and worth many stops while walking through the park.

If you're headed to the beach/Pier this is definitely a place to walk through and visit!

What a gorgeous place! What can be said?  Amazing view, beautiful area, fun place to walk, jog or people watch. Although, it must be said; wtf is with some of the people that do full on yoga here?  On busy ocean ave? There was a girl who was doing some incredibly awkward, weird, borderline inappropriate poses. It was embarrassing to watch. News flash, no one wants to be chilling on the grass with some spread-eagled spandex-wearing hippy a foot away. But, nothing can make me give this place less than 5 stars... :)

When I moved out west one of the first sights my eyes laid upon was the view from this park. I said to myself now this is a view my eyes can get use to. Rolling waves breaking away, coming onto shore. After nearly a quarter century of living on the westside, I am still held captive by the same scenic ocean view.  Less so by the crowds. If the roses are in bloom, don't forget to sniff as you walk on by.

Back when my dog was alive, she would sniff out the window as i drove here. The closer I got, the faster her tail would wag, and when I parked the car, she could hardly contain her excitement. She would leap out of the car, eager to be entertained by the ground squirrels that live beyond the fence. She relished this park as much as I did. Once she got spooked and it wasn't even Halloween. She thought the statue of man's head in the rose garden was staring at her! She cautiously approached it and then retreated, circled it and went on.

If you come after 6 p.m. there's free parking. A picnic lunch or dinner here is easy because there's plenty of trash receptacles nearby. The walking paths for the most part are not too crowded. At times friends have strolled by and we bumped into each other. Have even been invited to parties while staring out to sea. It's an all around great park.

Nowadays on a warm summer's evening, especially before sunset, this park soothes my soul. It makes me grateful to live and work on the westside.

Palisades park is a beautiful park that is more than just a park. It has an amazing view of the ocean, provides a great running trail, and has a wonderful bike path for mountain bikers.

This park has been featured in many movies, tv shows and in cinema. Even though Santa Monica tends to be very crowded and congested, this park is truly a hidden gem in the bumper to bumper concrete jungle of west LA. I highly recommend you come here and just watch a relaxing sunset, or bring your journal and write some poems! I even wrote a few today, I hope you enjoy!

    MISUNDERSTANDING

Tonight, I sat inside a Cafe
reading my book and waiting for my drink.

A table of five arrived, and then..

I saw you arrive from the place
where sidewalks come to an end.

    I saw you laughing
    and speaking a foreign language
    I could not understand.

    Every time I looked over
    You stopped talking
You feared that I would understand.

    I saw your whole table
    laughing, smiling and belonging.

After you left, my waitress said,
"Don't pretend like you didn't know
    what they were saying!"

I didn't know what you were saying,
    but that doesn't mean I didn't understand.

Some things are never lost in translation.

Call me crazy but I only like to run down Ocean Ave starting at Palisades Park to Shutters/Casa del Mar and back. That's a little over 3 miles or a 5K. This is a gorgeous stretch of beach to run!

I am not a runner, let's set the record straight...I HATE RUNNING!!! But I have an urge to do so every now and again. I just have to get it out of my system!

I have run this route many times with with my ex early on Saturday mornings. She was a marathon runner and I was a marathon supporter! Seriously, I can only run a 5K and nothing more! Anywho, I have been running this route again lately, but at the wee hours of the night, like 12-1am. Believe it or not, the weather is PERFECT at those hours! Not cold at all! Great ocean breeze! Delightful stench of homeless individuals. What more could you ask for?

Ladies, always remember to not run at odd hours. Your safety is of the utmost importance. Use wisdom!

Ok tourist, so you have just been to the Santa Monica Place and now your looking for that nice place to strut your overpriced disigner duds with a killer view.  This is the place!

The park sits on a high bluff overlooking the Santa Monica Pier and the beach.  It's got a really nice walkway along the bluff and lots of green grass to spead out that Gucci blanket you just bought and relax awhile.

There are lots of joggers, strollers and yes homeless people about; (some of whom act out in not too amusing ways, hence the one star deduction).  There are lot of dogs here so watch your step.

I really cannot complain about this park.  It is one of my favorite in the Los Angeles basin.  Where else can you go on a run, stroll, get awesome photography, talking to interesting people from all over California and the world within a 1.6 mile stretch?

Awesome place for people watching, if you are into that kind of thing.  Once you get tired of that, you can walk down to the Pier or 3rd Street Promenade for food, shopping, entertainment.

This park is totally safe. One thing... near the area of the Pier, alot of homeless.... today in the afternoon, I actually arrived to the park around 'siesta' time it seemed because every homeless person was asleep.  If you ever been to Santa Monica, you know they have a very tolerant policy for the homeless, especially around the area of the Pier and the Promenade.  If thats not your thing, just stay north of California Ave, and enjoy the homes, people, and vistas with no worries.  Consider taking the bridge across the Pacific Coast Highway unto the wide beaches as well.

This park is a little slice of heaven. I love to come here on a Sunday afternoon and go for a walk and then lay out on the grass and read magazines, stare up at the palm trees and spend endless hours mesmerized at the how the sunlight scatters onto the sea like diamonds. I always feel at peace here. I never want to leave, but when I finally tear myself away from the sun and the ocean I always feel so refreshed and recharged.

I also love that there are so many dogs. It has to be the best spot for dog-watching! I don't have a dog, but I really want one so I get my fill on canines here!

There are two public restrooms, and they even have good toilet paper! Thanks City of Santa Monica! There's metered parking on Ocean Ave., but I always park for free on the sides streets.

This is truly one of Los Angeles' gems, and I'm so grateful I live nearby in Brentwood so I can come whenever I want to. Driving to and from Palisades Park on San Vicente Blvd. is what I envision "stairway to heaven" to be except it's my roadway to heaven.

Featured in countless movies, it doesn't get much more iconic LA than Palisades Park-- 1.6 miles bordered by Ocean Avenue to the East, and the bluff overlooking the beach to the West.

Here you will find some of the BEST people watching on the planet.  The run from the Pier to San Vicente has killer views of the ocean and provides both grass and dirt trails to suit your running preferences.  There are several interesting monuments along the path and even a Rose Garden and an area for board games like chess!  Simply a must see if you're visiting Santa Monica.

It is surprising how few reviews there are for this park, considering the traffic it gets. When I lived in Santa Monica, I walked the length of it nearly every day.

Palisades Park is where the real L.A. meets the movie L.A. Homeless people hang out here, yes. And why not? It's paradise. The city runs to the ocean and is stopped by a crumbling cliff. It's here that Palisades Park, a strip of immaculate green grass crisscrossed by paved and earth paths lined with trees and benches, stretches for several miles. There's a war memorial, a world-class rose garden, large-scale sculpture, drinking fountains and clean restrooms. What more do you want?

People run, walk dogs, walk and talk and just sit here to look out at the ocean, the white beaches of Santa Monica and the curve of the mountains that become Malibu. From here you can see the entire Santa Monica Bay including the pier, sailboats in the water, volleyball players on the beach and the PCH below. Close enough to breathe the fresh air coming off the water and yet only steps away from Happy Hour cocktails.

You'll hear no less than five different languages being spoken and might observe traditional garb from Asia, the Middle East or Africa. Tourists from all over the world, aspiring and successful models, actors, musicians and immigrants all gather here. They might be obese, in shape, young, very old or just desperately clinging to their youth. This is Los Angeles and we love L.A.

So in continuation of my "Afternoon in West LA on my way to pick up my mom from LAX", with Bay Cities sandwich in one hand and my green tea ice blended from Coffee Bean in the other, I decided to seek out a bench to enjoy my lunch.  I actually have never walked on this side of Ocean Avenue, but I knew there were some benches to take advantage of.

I crossed Ocean Avenue and I saw the bench.  I propped myself down and momentarily took in the view.  180 degree panorama of the Pacific Ocean with the Santa Monica Pier at my 10 o clock.  I did not have any shade, but it wasn't too warm and it was breezy, literally being a few hundred feet from the water.

This would have been the perfect time to people watch, but the bench was facing the water, so if I did any people watching, I had to turn around.  I did do some squirrel and pigeon watching though.  As soon as I opened my sandwich, I had 2 squirrels converge on my twenty, to which I made a small little kicking like motion to scare them off.  I didn't want those rabie infested things getting too close and try to jack my sandwich like it was a pair of thugs trying to carjack someone.  Carjacking is wrong and karma will bite those guys in the ass.

After some time, being in the sun did get kinda warm, so I didn't stay there as long as I could have.  There is a parking structure on Arizona and 2nd st that has 2 hours free, so do take advantage of that if you're going to do anything aside from seeing a movie.

I'd love to say that I go running here all the time, but I don't run. However, I am lucky enough to live not too far from this prime strip of land, and I can't think of too many more beautiful places to sit on a bench and breathe.

In my opinion, this is SM's version of Central Park. Where else can you run on a trail on a 3 mile bluff that over looks the ocean? There are rose gardens, a huge variety of trees, tables where old people play chess and picnic, tons of spots to throw down a blanket and read, and above all... the best place to sneak a cup of good wine and watch the sunset.

It is also apparently now the home of several makeshift outdoor training sessions and fitness groups. Apparently the views are good and you can't beat the free rent. Oh well, it's big enough to where there is still plenty of room to get your own peaceful plot of well maintained grass.

I tend to favor the section of the Palisade between California and the Northern end by San Vicente. Mostly because it is where most of the local residents (not tourists and panhandlers) go to relax.

It also offers a fantastic view of the beach (and sunset at the right time), as well as access to the ocean.

Pay parking, except for certain side streets.

I go at least once a week, and it indicates the home stretch is just around the corner on my usual jog.

I love walking along the paths here, watching the ocean and listening to Ben Folds'  "Brick" repeatedly. I'm kind of emo like that.

It is absolutely beautiful here and a convienent break from the day since you can cross Ocean Ave from Wilshire while on lunch from the office.

There are homeless people everywhere, sleeping, walking, asking for money, etc. In my experience, they don't really bother you but just do their own thing.

I've heard people complain that this park is grungy. They need to keep in mind this simple rule: North of Wilshire = Good, South of Wilshire = Bad. Those last four blocks of the park between Wilshire and the pier have not only the most homeless but also the most crowds, and that section seems to have gotten the scruffiest since the park's renovation in 2000.

But north of Wilshire is the park everyone knows and loves, blissfully uncrowded, but with the same awesome ocean view....and lots of 5-hour parking spaces! I guess you know you're a true Angeleno when the latter means as much as you to the former.

I can't visit Santa Monica without walking through this park. Period.

Big fan.  Why pay for a gym when this lovely park is great for a jog, walk, stretching and there are plenty of stairs to exercise on as well.  It never seems over-crowded, especially the further north you get and there's always excellent people watching with the occasional celeb sighting (i.e., Ron Howard & Arnold Schwarzenegger). Aside from that, it's hard to not feel an instant sense of peace gazing out at the ocean and the park is relatively quiet a bit away from the city and Hwy 1.

This is one of my favorite places in Santa Monica.   At the furthest north end of the Park, I recommend cutting up for a walk on Adelaide Dr. for a beautiful view.

Tip:  You don't have to feed the meters past 6 PM.

I've been spending a lot of time here, lately...on Saturdays, my daughter trains with her cross country/track team and sometimes during the week, I walk my dog here after visiting my Grandma.  On weekends, it's like the whole world's imagined view of LA, except it's for real:  Everyone here is an extra in a movie, and everyone is beautiful in their own way, some of them artificially so, some of them enhanced by the green grass, the blue sky, the tall palm trees, the faint roar of the PCH far below, and the ocean beyond which, if you look closely enough, reveals the curve of the earth to the naked eye.  At sunset, you'll see people from all over the world, taking picture postcard beautiful snapshots of the sun (one day recently, the sun was setting behind a long, thin, horizontal cloud that glowed orange and pink and looked like the mothership, and people were taking pictures of it like they were paparazzi and the sun was the love child of Anna Nicole Smith and Britney herself).  Every once in a while, you'll see real paparazzi, taking pictures with six foot long telephoto lenses, if something cool is shooting below.

After the recent wind and rain, the air has been so clean that the roller coaster and the rest of the rides on the Santa Monica Pier stand out in vivid and improbable relief against the sky and the sea.  Even the barber shop pole smokestacks of El Segundo look pretty on days like these.

At night, the bright mercury vapor lights make the paths look friendly and inviting, even when the park is mostly deserted, and the sound of the palms rustling high above make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

    Times like these...I love LA.

Speaking of which, I had an only-in-LA moment here:  A nice dog ran up to mine and they played together.  The owner cooed complimentary things about my dog and I agreed.  Then she asked if my dog would like to be in a commercial:  "I'm a dog scout," she explained, handing me her card.

Palisades Park is essentially a strip of grassy area that runs along the top of the Santa Monica bluff above Pacific Coast Hwy..  It includes nice walking paths, plenty of benches, spectacular views of the Bay and beaches, from Palos Verdes Peninsula to Malibu, and everything in between.  It also is refuge for many homeless people, who occupy most of the seating areas between the Pier & the California Incline.  After that, the tourist population thins out considerably and so do the panhandlers.  I would recommend you pick up the walking path at the point of the Incline and head north toward Santa Monica Canyon.  There is ample metered parking all along the way.
Palisades Park was one of my favorite haunts when I lived a few blocks away.  It has been the setting for many movies & TV shows.  I watched Katie Holmes film a romantic scene with Oliver Hudson (Kate Hudson's brother, Goldie's son) for Dawson's Creek.  The two of them had to hold a kiss while on a revolving platform, at sunset.  I learned a whole new respect for actors in romantic scenes after that.  It looked grueling.  At that time, Katie had no idea of the changes that were to come into her life!...........but I digress.
Anyway, there are staircases at intervals in the park, leading from the top of the bluff down to the ocean.  There is a beautiful rose garden in the park up near Montana Ave..  At the park's north end, turn right and stroll up Adelaide Drive for breathtaking views of the canyon, as well as some of the finest vintage homes I've seen, gracing that fascinating stretch of street.
Bring your camera - photo ops abound.  Leashed dogs are OK in the park.  The bike path parallels the park along Ocean Ave..  There are plenty of clean restrooms.
Palisades Park is damn near perfect, in fact.  I had to deduct one star because of the huge numbers of transients near the touristy area south of Wilshire.  Oh, and do stop to admire the white Art Deco statue of Saint Monica herself, in the park at Wilshire.  She appears to be the guardian of the Bay beyond, perhaps also watching out for those less fortunate in her midst.
Additional points of interest in the park are included in my photos.

This is one of the nicest parks. It is incredible. The view is amazing. However, there are a lot of snobby rich people walking around and they can damper the mood sometimes. It is a good place to walk a dog  or just sit. There are more homeless at the southern end of the park and less at the northern. Take a walk all the way to the north- little surprise garden type area and some benches.

Some of the best views you can find anywhere! Palisades Park is a runners heaven and provides your choice of a dirt pathway or a large grass runway for your exercising pleasure. The park is a long linear strip that runs along the bluff above PCH and has amazing views to Venice Beach, Santa Monica Pier, the Palisades and the mountains of Malibu. Plenty metered street parking can be found all along the park but I suggest parking for free in the adjacent neighborhoods. Access to the beaches below can be found spotted along the park and it's a great place for people watching while stretching before and/or after your run. There are plenty of places to get an after run snack and you'll have good company as this is a popular running area and one of the few that doesn't get crowded.

Nice view, but I do not enjoy being harassed and having to jump over people sleeping right in the middle of the path during my runs.

This park is simply gorgeous.  On a cliff, overlooking the ocean, giant palm trees, great running trails, a rose garden and much more all along beautiful Ocean Avenue.  What makes the park lose a star is the amount of homeless people living here.  It is really sad and distratting.  I've been asked for change while jogging, reading, etc.  If you stay in the North end of the park (north of Wilshire) you are less likely to encounter the homeless and the flock of tourists heading towards the pier.  I go here everyday for a run so the negatives can't really take away from the manicured beauty of the place.

i love palisades park for really just one reason - it's a nice place to take a walk/run.  it's a 1.5 mile stretch of land from the santa monica pier (south border) to san vicente (north border) on ocean, the elevated street just overlooking PCH and the ocean in santa monica.

when i first started running about a little over a year ago, it was because i got talked into doing a half marathon with two friends and i knew i had to start somewhere.  so, i read if you can run 3 miles 3 times per week, you can train for a half marathon.  i found this route, which isn't too far from where i live, and happens to be 3 miles from the pier up to the san vicente turnaround and back down to the pier.  this became my training spot and maybe if it hadn't found such a beautiful place to run i might not have continued on with the training.  i ran after work and if you time it right, as you run north on the trail you can watch the sun setting over the ocean against the backdrop of the jutting out hills in the distance and then when you make the turnaround at san vicente after the sun sets, the setting in front of you now is the ocean lit by the lights from the rides on the pier.  the pier, while cheesy when you're there, is pretty when lighted in the distance.

yes, there are a lot of homeless people in the park.  but, i've never, ever had any sort of issue with anyone living there.  in my opinion - it's no different from having anyone else there and i have way more of an issue with the huge blocks of runners who will sometimes take up the entire path and mow down the single runners like me!  early weekend mornings there are a lot of large running groups who run here for their training runs so sometimes it can get really crowded but for me, as long as they're considerate of the single runners, i find it more motivating than anything to have all these other runners running with you, too!

there's also a lot of green space that people bring weights and balls and mats and do other types of exercises there, too.  it's just a beautiful setting to be overlooking the ocean and when the weather is nice, you can't beat working out outdoors!

one final note.  the gradient is slightly uphill when you start at the pier and run to san vicente (and obviously downhill coming back...) so i always start at the pier to get the harder part overwith first and then the second part feels great - sometimes great enough for me make it a six miler and do it twice!

and yes, i did run the half marathon despite the fact that the two who talked me into it dropped out!!!  that was almost a year ago but i'm still running here!  look for the really, really slow moving person huffing along and dancing to her music at the stoplights.

I'm so lucky to live in the neighborhood. I walk the length of the park every day (and often take breaks to zen out on one of the benches overlooking the ocean). It's really beautiful north of Montana, but go any further south of California/Wilshire and the grass is less lush and it's more crowded. If you're looking for amazing views, walk to the northern end of the park and head up Adelaide and look left.
