Hellllooo delicious!
Thai is the only food I don't like; but now feel that perhaps the only restaurant I went to was not top notch!  Last Friday night two friends and I had a wonderful dinner; ordering Burmese and Thai dishes.  We started with the combo appetizer plate (samusa, fried squash and eggplant sticks and onion), which was delicious.  There was only one samusa, which is hard to share among three and the batter was thick; but still delicious.  The sauce was great, and not really spicy.  Since I normally don't go for Thai, I ordered the lamb with potatoes and onions from the Burmese side, while my friends ordered the seafood stew (I forgot the real name!) and the pumpkin stew?; both from the Thai side.  I kind of wanted to try the pumpkin dish, but the waitress said it is medium spicy, and I thought that might be too much for me.  However, even though it was too sweet for me, it was not too spicy!  So next time, I know I can order anything!  The winners were my lamb dish and the seafood stew one on the bottom right side of the Thai side.  I looooved them equally!  I was really impressed that everything was cooked quite nicely and so delicious with their lovely combination of spices.  We decided to have the fried banana with mango ice cream, which was nice; but not spectacular.

Their service was wonderful; they were not that busy.  We stayed for quite a while after paying, and while one of the waitresses kept looking over; they refilled our water glasses and were quite nice.
Overall, everyone was really helpful, explaining levels of spice and deliciousness, nice, while the food was delicious.  I can't wait for more!!

I love Mandalay and was excited to try this place. Unfortunately, the food did not impress.

We started with the combination appetizer (vegetarian samusa, fried squash sticks, eggplant and onion - $8). The samusa was average. The fried vegetables had way too much batter on them. All we tasted were batter and grease. The tea leaf salad ($7.95) had the right flavor, but it also had lettuce. That's a real big no-no in my book. I've had homemade versions of this salad many times and lettuce is never part of it. It is just pure filler that dilutes the pungent flavor of the salad.

The entrees did not flair much better. The Burmese style curry pork ($10) was the best dish. It's very savory with tender pieces of pork and potato. The coconut chicken curry (flour noodle with spiced coconut chicken curry sauce, split yellow pea powder, fried onion, cilantro and onion - $7.95) had ok flavor but it got tiring after a few bites. The coconut rice ($3) was a little too moist. While I liked the coconut flavor, I did not enjoy the sweetness.

Service was fine. Not really friendly, but not rude either. It's just indifferent.

Guess it is back to Mandalay I go.

Stuff we had (party of four)... Samusa soup (fantastic), Burmese roti palata (great), mild chicken curry noodles (good), coconut chicken noodles (good), pad thai (not bad).

Regardless of the actual meaning of it (whether it's ethnic or the English word), the name of this place is curiously awesome! :-)

First, I am only rating it on the Burmese food. I also grew up on Burmese food so I'm bias to my mom's cooking.

However, I am glad to see a Burmese Restaurant that I do not have to wait 30 mins to be seated (the other Burmese Restaurant on Clement).

I decided on not trying the typical Burmese foods (Mo Hin Nga and Ong Noh Kau Soi), I wanted to try some other menu items. I opted for the Ginger Salad, Palata with Curry, Catfish Steak Curry, Pumpkin Pork Stew. Before I tell you how the food was, I want you to understand my frustration. How is a Burmese Restaurant going to run out of Samusas? Its like a Chinese Restaurant running out of Egg Rolls! You can tell by my Avatar that I love...SAMUSAS (not Samosas).

Anyways, Ginger Salad was refreshing (I still like Tea Salad more but didn't try it here). The Palata was Great! Very Crispy (curry was OK). Catfish steak had a tomato base curry. It was good. Pumpkin Pork Stew was very good. I really liked it but the other people I was with, thought it was a bit too salty.

Their customer service was polite. Parking was easy for me this night but typically, it is hard to find parking in this area considering its a residential area.

Had lunch here last week since my hubby & I had to go to Mey Wah- this Asian grocery store on Clement.  Located right beside it, we decided to try the food.
The food was very good- we had the appetizer sampler, the tea leaf salad (this was to die for!), a curried coconut milk soup with noodles- comfort food to the nth degree.  Everything tasted good, and the place was very clean.  We have to try the rest of the items on the menu, but what we did have was good.  Will definitely go back.

I'm glad Pagan has moved into the hood, ya know cause we needed ANOTHER burmese restaurant. Kidding, kidding. I love the food and the atmo, and spreading out the Burmese food demand seems like a good idea to me. Love that tea leaf salad!

In my opinion, best Burmese curry in SF. I am not Burmese so I probably don't know anything, but I do know that I love curry, especially Pagan curry!! I would take a bath in it - except I won't, because I couldn't eat it after.

Pagan is worth the trek, better than Burma Superstar - and, I've never had to wait for a table.

Cute place for Burmese and Thai food in the Richmond.

Pagan is nicely decorated and lite very well.  The walls and tables are yellow color, so I'm sure this added to the light attribute of the restaurant. We were  seated in a litle nook-like area on the left of the dining room that had wooded booth seating.  This helped muffle the loudness of the high celings of the main dining room area.  So I recommend sitting in this area if it is very crowded.

It happened to be quite busy on the night that we dined, and it did take quite awhile to get serviced--once we did, you could definitely tell the server was flustered.  It was difficult to ask her for more description of items on the menu.  I asked her what the "Biriyani Rice" was, while pointing to the number on the menu, and she automatically assumed I wanted to order it. I guess she wasn't paying attention to the things coming out of my mouth.  Oh well.

Overall, the food is not bad here--with the acception of the Combination Appetizer Plate.

Definitely pass on the combo plate. It is a variety of fried onions, zuccini, eggplant, and samosa.  Not good...the batter was way too oily, and there was only 1 samosa.  There should've been at least 2 if they are going to put this on a combo plate, which is often shared between two or more people.  The fried onion reminded of of the "Bloomin' Onion" at Outback Steakhouse. Other than the spicy sweet sauce served, I couldn't quite tell that it was Burmese in this appetizer.

We also ordered the Tea Leaf Salad.  Eh...nothing special...it was refreshing, but a bit too much citrus flavor for my taste.

For entree's:

* Burmese Menu
Shwe Taung Kauswer (Coconut Chicken Curry: Flour noodle with spiced coconut chicken curry sauce, split yellow pea powder, fried onion, cilantro and onion): Y U M.  Loved the flavor, it was creamy and noodles were nice and chewy.  I will definitely order this again.

* Thai Menu
Pumpkin Curry : Kabocha pumpkin in red curry sauce with a choice of chicken, beef, or pork topped with crispy yam.  Nice flavor...unfortuantely, the pumpkin was minimal, there were probably only like 4 or 5 pieces.

We also ordered the Biriyani Rice...which is their mixed rice with raisins, cashews, and cinnamon flavor.  1 bowl of this can be enough to feed two people.

Overall, prices were reasonable, and portion sizes are great for what you are paying. But the high ceilings can often make it quite difficult to have a conversation, and with the slow service here, it can easily become a long awkward dinner with nothing to talk about.

I've been to this restaurant several times. The Burmese food is authentic and delicious and the portions are generous. Service is good and the wait staff is courteous and professional.  It's a charming little restaurant.  Street parking is fairly easy. I like the neighborhood; there are plenty of equally yummy places in this hood.

Okay, I've been looking..... been looking across this whole damn city for good Thai food. More importantly, good pad thai. Well I finally found it!!!!!!!
I like a good blend of sweet and spicy when it comes to my pad thai, and I got it last night. My girlfriend and I are from Orlando, FL and have had some of the best.... This is right there with them. She got the Thai spicy pan fried noodles, awesome as well. The pineapple fried rice is yet another must have from this place.

Who knew after all that searching we would find the best Thai place 1 block away.

hmm, none to shabby, went here the other day for dinner, if you've never been call to make sure of the hours as they are shifting some of them but yet still open whenever they feel like. so we waited outside on the benches. Not a big deal as it was a beautiful day.

the place is clean, bright and the decor is simple. I like!

menu - although they came to take our order very quickly i hadnt gotten past the first page, lots of stuff on the menu! i would have liked a bit more time to peruse but my dinner compatriot was famished and ordered immediately. HAHA they love the place and are there quite often.

we ordered the rainbow salad which was excellent, luckily we asked if there was any shellfish in it as i'm a bit allergic, they brought us the powdered shrimp in a little dish. Nice

I had the duck curry, it was good, a bit bland though i had hoped for some heat, i mean hey its Curry right? as for the duck, while roasted then added to the curry, it was a bit on the tough side with rather large portions of fat, now yes i do know that Duck is a fatty meat but if cooked correctly most of it renders away leaving succelent goodness. Not the case here, but it WAS good.

I also had the iced tea, while i had ordered regular tea unsweetened i was brought the thai version very good but not what i was looking for in the sweetness overload.

I will return here i think on a regular basis.

DISCLAIMER:  Might be worthy of more stars if I was a fan of curry or tamarind, but I'm not, so it's only 3 stars for me, but the Burmese boyfriend would give this place 4 stars.

We didn't order any of the Thai stuff.  The Burmese fam thinks this place is more authentic then wanna-be places like Burma Superstar.

Anyway, onto the food . . .  I absolutely loved, loved, loved the Tea Leaf salad.  I was going to order another one, but I was food-blocked because another one would apparently keep me up all night :(

Samusas were HUGE! and too curry-tasting for me . . .

Rainbow salad was blah.  I like it when the bf's mom makes it so I can squeeze extra lime juice on it and shower on more fried onions.

Not a fan of curry, but the Burmese Roti Palata was pretty darn grubilicious, esp. the Roti part :)

Servers were very nice and responsive.

CRAPPY SERVICE.

I would never go back to this place. They made my table and this table next to us wait about 30 mins to an hour for a tea leaf salad? RIDICULOUS. Considering its doesnt even need any heating or  intense "cooking."

And what really pissed me off is that this other table, who happen to white, got all there food within minute after ordering while we were still waiting.

The noodle dishes arnt that great.
The tea leaf salad is good good!
But the service is bad bad!
You are better off going to the original one at the far end of clement.

I told my husband that I was in the mood for something full of flavors, like Indian or Thai food, and we ended up in a restaurant that serves Burmese food which to me, is like a combo of those two cuisines. (Only if everything else in my life had such easy answers!)

Pagan is a small and cute restaurant, with one part sectioned off that can be served as a semi-private dining area that's good for large parties. The walls are painted golden, which brightened even more as the dusk sun poured in. Ceiling is high, which makes the restaurant feel more spacious, but also makes the noise level almost unbearable. You really have to shout to have a conversation.

Overwhelmed by the choices and the almost-zero knowledge of Burmese food (the favorite dish I had at Burma Superstar was a Chinese-style silken tofu with shiitake mushrooms, and Mandalay had that delicious noodle thingy-whatever-it's-called...so...), I ordered the Pagan veggie curry with rice. You can't go wrong with a dish that has the restaurant name in it, right? My husband ordered the Chicken curry noodles and a palm juice.

First off, the palm juice was, weird. I can't visualize where the juice comes from (I know what a palm tree looks like, but is there a palm fruit and what's that like?). If I close my eyes, it leaves this aftertaste that resembles those sweet dim sum buns. I don't know if juice should ever remind you of buns!

My veggie curry was in the form of soup, which surprised me. It had a whole of veggies like string beans, tomatoes, eggplants, okras that tasted rich and flavorful, but really light at the same time. On one hand, they must have been stewing for quite a while to absorb all the herbs, spices and the nice tang from tomatoes, but on the other hand, they weren't falling apart like veggies do when they are cooked for a long time. I can hardly taste the curry until the end when I was scraping the bottom of the bowl. And I really liked the lentils that made the soup a little heartier than a simple tomato soup.

My husband's curry noodles were good. Good flavors, not overpowering at all.

The price for rice is a bit crazy, especially since the $2 didn't even go toward good quality rice. But overall, it's still a cheap place where you can have a meal for two under $25.

I would love to come back and try a few other dishes. This could be a very nice dinner spot after a walk at Land's End.

I live a block from there and never tried since they opened a couple years ago, so I thought I'd give it a try.
I am very familiar with Thai food but didn't really know how Burmese food would be different.
First of all, there are 2 sides on the menu: one Burmese and one Thai. I know most people know Thai food, so in doubt you can always get back on familiar ground and order Thai! Also, note that the staff are all Thai people so you can order in Thai; for the girlfriend and me, it was easier to ask about what was typical Burmese food.

Definitely try the Tea Leaf Salad. It seems to be their specialty, and most popular item, and for a good reason! It's very tasty, refreshing and healthy, with a nice presentation.
I was not a big fan of the fried shrimp cake, but I am not particularly fond of shrimps to start with.
The Kow Soi was very good, and the chicken Biriyani rice was excellent; funny though how this is dish looks/tastes like Indian food!

All in all I would give 3 stars and a half, but the good service made me go for 4 stars! Just to be sure they were not nice just because we spoke Thai, I looked around, and I noticed they were friendly and took the time to explain the menu to other patrons as well.

I will definitely go back... maybe try some of their Thai menu next time!

I really like the food here... The lamb curry is amazing -- I can never convince myself to get anything else because from what I've tried off of the plates of others,  the lamb curry is the champion.

The $2 for rice per person is a bit crazy and what's crazier is that you have  to specifically request individual rice services or they will bring you a pot, which doesn't have as much rice in it and they'll still charge you per person!

Other than that I love this place. The light in the side room kinda flicker, but once you get past that the food is great.

I came here on a Wednesday, the wait staff was friendly but they seemed stretched too thin. Even though the place wasn't full, it still took them a while to notice that someone had walked in.

The food is pretty good, pricey though. I'd recommend a curry noodle dish. Our waitress mixed it for us at our table. Although it confused some customers while she was mixing it for them. She did it in a manner that made it look like she was looking to pick something out of it. But it was a good meal anyway. The rice was separate but was a good portion.

I would come here again. I actually wouldn't mind working here, just so they don't have to stretch themselves thin.

Hey, I'm a Chinese food fiend. Add up my reviews! I've never cared much for Thai, and never even tried Burmese. What I can say about either is... at least it's not Vietnamese.

So we came to Pagan at around 5:30pm so waiting to be seated was not an issue. It's a modest place, not too fancy... maybe 15 tables. Very few wood carvings, some paintings. They should throw in some golden tiger or elephant figures or something.

Here's what we ordered, in layman's terms. Veggie eggrolls. Stirfried Okra with shrimp. Eggplant with sliced pork. Lamb Curry. Eggrolls were piping hot, not greasy but flavorful.  The Okra was cooked just right. Shrimp was OK. The Eggplant was perfect, but the pork was just plain. The Curry Lamb was pretty good... the lamb wasn't very tender, but the curry was fantastic. Doesn't say much because I'd eat curry out of a can with a Hormel label.  But do ask for a little side dish of peanut sauce. It kicks butt! It's got little pieces of peanut on top.

Anyway, the sauces were spicey but not hot. The flavor was good enough to bring me back for another visit.  Cons... small portions. Prices are barely reasonable. Not much of an ethnic atmosphere. Don't order the Thai Ice Tea... not that it was expensive, but it was like ice tea with half n half. Not much of a thirst quencher.

Service was quick and friendly, but there were only 5 tables seated including ours. I'm no authority on Thai and Burmese, but it tasted fine.

Check it out.

ALERT! I am about to go against what's hip and cool!  Pagan is not hip and cool!

$2 for rice...per person!

Un
Frickin
Believable!

Tea? $2!

We're not talking any fancy loose tea leaves tea either!  We're talking 1 tea bag, small pot of hot water tea.

The food was average at best.  I had "seasonal" shrimp and okra.  I think seasonal just means over-priced to them.

My SO had pork curry.  Not much curry, not much flavor, not much pork.  I'd call this the not-much restaurant!

I'm not raving fan of BS (burma superstar for you o-hipsters), but Pagan is not even close.  I will never go back to Pagan!

I had a mixed experience at Pagan.  The food was good, overall - the salad was not very good, but the chicken satay, chicken-coconut-noodle soup, and the lamb biryani were delicious.  I enjoyed how many different flavors they presented, while keeping the food fresh and light.
The service, however, was poor.  While the waitresses were very nice, the timing of the restaurant was completely off.  Only a minute (literally!) after we walked in, they were taking our dinner order.  Then, only about three minutes after we had ordered, all of the food was on the table!  The whole experience was very rushed.  If I lived very close to this restaurant, I would maybe return.  However, since it is a bit of a schlep, I don't think I will be back.

It's very annoying experience to eat at this restaurant.  I am not that difficult to please but any kind of dessert I wanted were not even available.
If this restaurant charge that much money they should improve services.
The waitresses seemed like only pay attention to VIP customers so as the first visitor it's kind of unpleasant that they didn't even bother to ask any needy thing during time we were eating there.
I wasn't that much impressed by food either since it's smaller portion and the drinks were very limited as well.

I think I'm just going to cave in and give this place 5 stars.  Can't go wrong with the gut feeling, right?

I always, always, ALWAYS order the Vegetarian Spring Rolls.  I absolutely love this dish.  I've also decided to branch out and order different things on the menu, and my new favorite may be the Pineapple Fried Rice.

Normally I'm not a fan of pineapples, but this was sooo good with chicken, cashews and raisins.  Yum!

Oh, and I'd give it half a star off for the Praram, but Yelp doesn't allow that, so just don't order that.  Unless you like a dog-diarrhea-looking vegetarian dish that tastes like warm Jif peanut butter over a bunch of vegetables.

**Review #800 posted in sync with Sean S's #800.  Woo!**

One of the best parts of living in San Francisco is all of the choices that we have.  In the mood for Burmese, you say?  Well, there is Burma Superstar, B-Star Bar, and Mandalay - all good.  Oh, and if you don't mind driving out a little further towards the ocean, there is Pagan.

Pagan seems to be much less known, but not so far out of the way that it's unreasonable - it's near the Lincoln Park Golf Course, and would make a perfect spot to dine before or after a visit to the Legion of Honor.  The menu is unique because they also have Thai dishes, so if one person wants Pad Thai and the other is dying for Samusas, well, everyone is happy (at least about their food).

We tried an assortment of dishes, including the Tea Leaf Salad  -always my favorite- , the Samusa Soup, the Fried Onion, the Roti Palata, and the Chicken Curry Noodles.  All good, spicy, well flavored and fairly priced.   I liked the Roti so much that I ordered extra to take home - it reminded me of a Green Onion Pancake without the green onion.  Combined with a sweet, hot cup of Burmese tea, it was the perfect lunch time meal on a cold and rainy afternoon.

I'd go back on my own, with a group, or with a friend.  It would be perfect for a famiiy meal.  It's nice to know that you can have all of your favorite dishes without having to fight the crowds at the other Burmese restaurants.

I hate shopping at the mall b/c I hate waiting.  And I hate waiting to eat even more.  Me hungry, and me hungry NOW.  We are in the modern age - no more hunting (another form of waiting), gathering (still waiting), and cooking (STILL waiting!) when you need food NOW.  So Burma Superstar is off the list (LOTS of waiting!!), and I gotta say Pagan rocked my noodle-loving, curry-craving, Burmese-desiring, wait-refusing hungry soul.

Being a middle child, I hate being compared to my siblings, but restaurants are meant to be compared.  I bet that's what every asian parent says about children too.  Dammit.

I had chicken coconut curry noodles, which were absolutely divine.  Better than Burma Superstar, and rivaled Yamo.  The samusas were ok.  The fish noodle soup - EXCELLENT.  My favorite!!  Makes me wish I could pack that soup into a thermos like back in the day for my lunch at work.  I would be the coolest engineer at the table!  I thought the tea leaf salad here was also much better than Burma Superstar's or Yamo's.  Parking still sucks like Burma Superstar, but at least you don't have to wait when you get to the restaurant.  Don't quote me on it, but I think it was slightly cheaper than Burma Superstar, too.  Did I mention no waiting to eat?

I never knew San Francisco had such a great Burmese restaurant... growing up (I'm chinese, born in Burma) I've always had authentic Burmese food from my family so never bother to go out and try the restaurant food... however while visiting SF, my cousin and his gf took us here and i was blown away!

We had my favorite authentic Burmese dishes such as Moo Hin Nga, Ong No Kaw Soi and Kaw Soi Dok! They were all great!!! Can't wait to go back and visit!!!

Once again, we had to have Thai so why not go back to where you know the food is going to be great?  We started off  "Prawns in a Love Boat".  We really liked them but Dale thought the prawns were small but he has a bigger tank to fill so I was fine with them!  They were delicious deep fried praws resting on top of a Mango type relish/salsa with some fried shoe-string pototoes packed with flavor, kind of oniony!  Then we shared an excellent rainbow salad, chicken satay and then our entress, okra with shrimp & tofu and cashew chicken.  Very good along with some white wine & Iced Thai Tea (the tea was great!).  And of course I wanted the fried bananas AGAIN!  Good grief, we practically rolled out of there!

Just had another wonderful meal at Pagan tonight.

Again, brought some friends for their 1st time (hopefully of many to come).

We had the Platha (roti) which I thought was a little thick in the middle but went beautifully with the Coconut Curry Chicken Noodle Soup. MAN! That never fails!! That dish is really love at first sight/bite/smell/taste/&touch!

Also had the tea leaf salad and the biryani.

2 orders of the platha, 2 orders of the coconut curry chicken noodle soup, 2 orders of the tea leaf salad, 1 order of the chicken biryani, 1 thai iced tea and 2 san pelligrinos came out to only $58 before tip, split amongst 6 full & happy tummies. Really, $12 a person (with tip). WHAT A DEAL - WHAT A MEAL!

I LOVE spreading Pagan LOVE!

(drool worthy pics to be up soon!)

Dare I say it? You dare me? Fine, I'll say it. Pagan is better than Burma Superstar. Yes, it's way out there in Outer Richmond but it's worth the trek.

Yes, I love Burma Superstar and I hate comparing but both are Burmese (however Pagan has both Burmese AND Thai) with a lot of the same dishes. So I'd love to say that Pagan is the less busier Burma Superstar but I have to admit that the food is actually better. I know! How dare I say that but I do...I just had it tonight and the food was phenomenal! I'm not going to say it's a lot better but it is slightly better than Burma Superstar. Their tea leaf salad is better. Their samusas are better. Their curry is pretty equal. Their noodles are better.

Overall, Pagan is better because I'm not waiting 1-1.5 hours for a table and not feeling rushed to leave because of the long lines. If you want to relax and enjoy your food and not worry come go Pagan.

Plus...the prices are better at Pagan.

My man and I are soon-to-be residents of the Outer Richmond, and were stoked to find a high quality (via Yelp reviews, of course!) thai food place within walking distance. The moment our lease was signed, we jumped in the car and headed to our future local thai food haven.

We have admittedly tried wayyy too many thai food restaurants in this city, so I think we know good food (and prices). I loved the decor--it felt homey, yet well-kept... not too big, not too small. I love the window seats, and the [partial] view of the golf course. The bathroom was also clean and cute, though a little weird that you have to walk through the back to get there.

We ordered the yellow chicken curry, pumpkin chicken curry,  and 2 sides of rice. They give you plenty of curry and chicken/veggies, and it is definitely worth the price. The rice they give you isn't enough for the $2 they charge, but we figure we'll mostly be doing take out from this place and cooking rice in our at-home rice cooker anyhow. The service was awesome--we had our water refilled constantly, which is always the mark of good service for me. The curry was yummy, and the red even had a little kick to it. It's probably not the best I've had, but it was pretty darn good.

Suffice to say, we will be back, and I am stoked to live within walking distance of this cute little place. I can't wait to try the Burmese food!

PS. If you drive here, street parking is NOT bad. I have never had to circle even once to find a spot within a couple blocks.

Came here on a Saturday night and luckily, we didn't have to wait. Well, it was around 9PM, but still, no wait! I was really glad because I really wanted to come here for my birthday before, but they were closed! And I really like this location because it is easy to find parking.

We had the coconut noodles, catfish noodles, okra & prawns, and eggplant. Coconut noodles are my favorite! I always get it whenever I have the chance. The catfish noodles were just average..it tasted exactly like my mom's, no joke! Maybe they share the same recipe? Haha. I only had a taste of the okra and eggplant dishes, and I actually don't really remember if they were good or not, so that tells you something. Nothing really memorable about those dishes. I must say that the food is a little pricy for what you are getting though.

All in all, I wouldn't mind coming back to try some of the other items (tea leaf salad, samusa, and biryani). And they also have Thai food, so maybe I'll try some of that next time!

Cozy, but managed to accommodate our group of 16.  Parking in the area can be challenging ... so try parking on Geary.

Great assortment of appetizers which our beer guzzling end of the table filled up on (Singha is all they have).

-- Fried tofu (so so ... I wouldn't order again),
-- prawns in a love boat (we only ordered cause the name was so cute)
-- Burmese Roti Palata (awesome and delicious)
-- Curry noodle (yummy!)

Service was attentive and responsive for our rowdy group that stayed well past closing ...

Have only had Burmese food at one other restaurant (Nan Yang in Berkeley, which I love), but the food at Pagan was definitely on the same level.  We started with the Ginger Salad, which was topped with grated ginger, nuts, fried garlic, tomatoes, and peppers, which gave the dish a nice crunchiness and texture.  The dressing was very light, which was a perfect complement to the salad, since it allowed all the different flavors to come through with each bite.

There are actually Burmese and Thai menus to choose from, so we chose the Vegetarian Crispy Rolls appetizer from the Thai menu.  We received hot and crispy rolls filled with vermicelli bean threads and other slivered veggies.  This too was delicious.

Unfortunately, they were out of the Pork Pumpkin Curry on the Burmese Menu, so we ordered the Poodi, a potato curry served with nan bread.  I really enjoyed the curry, but I guess I was expecting more of an Indian naan bread, and these were more like a New Mexican sopapilla.   I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to experience Burmese food.

So, we ordered everything off the Burmese menu, so don't know anything about the Thai...

Yummy.... The location was a little random and I wasn't sure what to expect, but it gave Burma SS a run for its money.... The Burmese Samosas were somehow both rich and light, and the curry we had was good enough to take home the leftovers.

Service was great, food was great, atmosphere could use a little work (was pretty quiet when we were there), but overall a couple thumbs up

I got vege noodle salad.
The noodle was over cooked.
It was edible but I didn't like it.

Bermese Samusas was pretty good.

This place was King of Thai for a while.
My son found a slimy bug in his take out Pho and I got bug in my Pho when it was the Thai King.

The new place is clean and fixed up really nice.
Service was good but the noodle was.......
I think all noodle of the world, gotto be NOT OVER COOKED.
Is there any noodle dish gotto be over cooked?
Am I asking too much?
Or, Burmese noodle dish is always over cooked?

I think no body likes over cooked noodle.
Or, is it just me?
I don't like over cooked noodle.

I was with my son here for lunch and he loved the place.
So, 3 star for now.
So, let me try again to see the over cooked was an accident or ......

I happened to find Pagan their opening week and have been there many, many times since.

I have to say their Rainbow Salad blows away all others.  If you tried the Rainbow salad at Burma Superstar and weren't impressed, give it a try at Pagan and you'll be in for a surprise.

Of course, the Tea Leaf salad is a close second.  A few times I would just go with a friend and split the 2 salads.  I'm not even a big salad person, but they are definitely my favorite dishes at this restaurant.

The samoosas are great.  The quality of the samoosa soup (samosas and falafels) varies greatly which can sometimes be a little disappointing, but sometimes it can just be amazing.  I would also recommend the Tom Kha soup (coconut, galanga, and lemongrass?).

The Thai dishes are good, but I would not recommend going to Pagan if you're in the mood for Thai food.  They've admitted that they don't get as many Thai orders, and there's a reason for it.

The staff has always been very friendly and attentive to me, but I also go during non-peak times.  Sometimes the staff seems surprised that guests want to talk to them, but once you get them going, they're happy to give you their opinions, answer questions about the food or their business.

The restaurant is always clean when I go there.  One time a child of the staff was running around the dining area screeching, but it didn't bother me as much as the other guests.

If I were rating this restaurant on the variety dishes that i really love and the hours they are actually open, they would probably only get 1 or 2 stars.  I am giving them 4 stars because they make me and my friends really, really crave their Rainbow salad like you wouldn't believe.

this is my first meal at a Burmese restaurant, I had the Nan Gyi Dok (Mild Chicken Curry)  Rice noodle with spiced chicken curry, split yellow pea powder, fried onion and cilantro. The serving size was smaller than I expected, most restaurants give more generous portions, I was still hungry when I left, I guess they make the servings smaller so people order more side dishes / appetizers, I was done in less than 10 minutes.

King of Thai Noodle House on Clement st is better than Pagan in my opinion
