Pretty decent place to watch a sporting event, though lacking in character. Its got the usual layout of flatscreens everywhere, cheap domestic pints and pitchers during games, et cetera. The Old Bay kettle chips with cheese sauce and the sliders are both pretty good as far as bar food goes but the wings are avoidable.
Bottom line, I've met people here for Phils games a few times and had a good time but I wouldn't choose to hang out here if the decision were left to me.
Typical "Irish" (again, I'm not sure what makes this place Irish - the name? but whatever) sports pub that includes:
- a menu where you're hard pressed to find something that ISN'T deep fried. Artery clogging, brocoli bites, onion rings, chicken tenders and repeat. Just envision a kitchen that isn't a kitchen, but a room with multiple fryer stations and freezers.
- aloof, forced, unfriendly, repeatedly forgetful service both from waitstaff and bartenders.
- A generic atmosphere and ambiance with lots of plasma TV's strewn everywhere and beige as far as the eye can see.
- Cheap domestic draft beers, if you're on a tight budget and don't mind drinking Miller Lite, their pitchers are $5! You can't beat that deal anywhere.
- Crowd content varies, although I'd avoid this place during the weekend at all costs
Came in with a group when the restaurant was rather empty, the staff was not very helpful or accommodating - the bartenders would not spare any high chairs for our table nor did the restaurant have any extra chairs for a big top.
Staff struck me as rude while no one really seemed to care or to try to solve the issue. Our group was there for at least four or five hours during which no bartender or waitstaff cracked a smile. At the end, I had a hard time mustering up energy to even give them a decent tip. (Uh, hello staff, you're in the SERVICE industry)
In all, a Blah-bar that's decent for cheap blah-drinking and watching a sports game or two while clogging your arteries with some fried fare. The extra star is for affordability - the only aspect that saves this place.
Perfect if you're an out-of-towner in the big city on a friday night with your daddy's car..got your collar popped..and Lisa Loeb glasses on...you like Bud Light or Miller specials...and dancing in their upstairs dance floor after you chow on their "everything-on-their-menu-is-deep-fried" fare.
Sad, I had high hopes as its very close to me. It really is a good spot to watch a game (great TVs), but do not go to eat..menu is straight out of the Costco Freezer Section. Beer selection is meh, not nearly enough regional beer. Decent prices on Bud/Miller if that excites you.
Bartenders are quick, and decent crowd for Phils games. Upstairs dance area? Not bad, but can be a sausage fest..bring out yer ladies.
I was beyond impressed with the willingness of Paddy Whacks to accomodate our needs for our fundraiser event we held last week. We were raising money for a charity so they gave us a deal for $20 - 3 hr open bar AND food in a private upstairs area! So we charged $30/person and donated $10 to charity. They also donated t-shirts and gift cards to raffle off during our event which all proceeds also went to the charity. The event coordinator, Ryan, was also extremely helpful and was around the entire evening of the event to assist us. The bartenders were great and there was a good amount of them for our size crowd, I never had to wait more then a minute or 2 for a drink.
Thanks to Paddy Whacks for making our event a huge success!!!
My cousin and I were in town for UFC 101 and while we were sightseeing on South Street we came across this bar. All I can say was the food is bomb, the atmosphere was awesome and the drinks were not too expensive. Coming from California, we know what an expensive bar is. This is definitely a bar I wish was in my neighborhood. I know the next time I come back to Philly, I will definitely come back to Paddy Whacks! You gotta try the S'mores when you go there!
Good Wings, and lots of Phillies fans during the game.
The only decent bar on South Street! Walking around on a Friday night, I was hoping to go to a few crowded bars with the young crowd and this was the only one that actually had people in it.
I really liked how clean and big the place is. There are three floors of Irish pub fun :) The music was great which included hip hop and some 90's. They need to control the volume though because it was a bit too loud for conversation. There are also plenty of tables to sit at and chat.
Downside to this place... maybe it was just the night but girl:guy ratio was horrible! All I saw when I looked around were a bunch of guys!
Anyway, if I ever do go out again on South Street, I'd definitely be heading back here.
The bartenders were obnoxious because they refuse to play non-Philly sports game on the TV. It was Tuesday night, and NO ONE was there nor were there any competing Philly sports team on television.
Otherwise, clean establishment, below average food, and decent crowd on Friday/Saturday nights.
More like 2.5 stars, but this my treat to you Paddy Whack's. It's kinda like a McFadden's/Finnegan's/Kildare's... generic Irish pub with a young, generic crowd.
I came here for thursday night live cover band karaoke. Cool concept, not as cool in practice. Few songs to choose from (since you can only sing what the band knows) and you read the words off a paper. People must have really enjoyed this though because the sign-up list was so long my friends and I never got a chance to sing. Boo that. The crowd was a weird mix of fratty 20-somethings, and middle aged folks pretending like they were fratty 20-somethings.
On the upside, the place looks new and it looks very nice. A lot nicer than I was expecting. Generic Irish decor, but all shiny and new. Downstairs was empty and a good place to grab a couple pitchers first, but upstairs was packed. We also came across a 3rd-level balcony looking over the stage... no one up there, good vantage point to watch some lady belt out Shania.
A fine bar, and a fun time if you come with the right people. I'm sure I'll go back since my friend loves anything with the words "live cover band" in it. Hopefully next time one of us will get to sing.
Went here to watch Game 1 of the World Series with my brother, his gf, jrg, and other friends...I agreed with my crew that it was not as crowded as I would expect, but our service was absolutely terrible. Before it even reached the greatest capacity of the night (i.e. not THAT crowded) and it took forever before our waitress brought me a glass. Our Old Bay Fries took so long that she comped them, and therefore we didn't complain that there was no Old Bay on them...
It was altogether a frustrating night despite the Phillies' win, so we spent the rest of the Series on the couch, where the view of the TV was great and the beer was served on time.
Douche Bag central! Limp Bizkit BLARING on the sound system with 40 reversed ball caps bouncing in unison! NOT AN EXAGGERATION
One true regret in life is not just turning right around and walking out, but actually paying for a beer there...well in my defense the girl I was with new the door key and he bought our drinks...so it just goes to show you nothing is truly free! My ear's and eyes were raped and I am still visibly angry!
Life is too short to go to these types of places.
Average food, atmosphere. Limited beer selection. All at slightly expensive prices. Not too much to see here...
I already despise Irish pubs because of the Jersey chad, douchebag crowd that frequents these places. Against my better judgment, I went to Paddy Whacks because a coworker was having her "going away" party. The waitress was flaky, the drinks were expensive and the food was bland and small in portion size. The highlight of my evening was seeing all of the girls with their hair "poofs" that went out of style three years ago. Or was it the girl in the bathroom that was actually "styling" her hair and using Aquanet hairspray?
Bottom line - this place is horrible unless you are from Jersey, then you probably come here every weekend and talk about how awesome it is.
I tend to love bars within walking distance from my apartment, just because of the convenience (hi O'Neal's, Dark Horse, New Wave ...). This is actually the closest to me but I have to say ... I will NEVER return unless my best friend is dying and her last night out is for some reason scheduled here.
Perhaps my mistake was going up to the top floor. I felt like I was at a frat party, set in North Jersey, in the 1980's. AND beers weren't cheap. Boo Paddy Whack's!
The end. Never again.
Great place to watch sports, drink beers and eat food.
Kinda funny that I am not the only one with two or few stars. This place SUCKS. I will never go back there EVER again. Between the deuche-bag crowd that invades the place to the arrogant non-tip deserving bartenders, it is the worst experience I have ever had. I work in a high volume bar in the city and I would never send my customers there. I had multiple problems there...First, there was no toilet paper in any of the bathrooms (mens and womens). That is DISGUSTING; There was a guy who vomited at the table across from me and nothing was done - I was told to tell the next guy on the "totem pole". Soon after that I went to the bar on the second floor for a next round...I stood there for about 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged me (meanwhile, a short Italian guy-who was clearly a bartender-looked at me and turned around. Okay whatever, that's fine, I have done it myself-not on purpose. The next guy comes over and ignores me. Okay again, maybe he is the bar-back, I understand. But the same bartender that came before ignores me again, with money in hand, thats a little ridiculous...I get my beers eventually after haggling, but he hands me my change without even looking at me. Bull SHIT. I just think if you guys are trying to build client el, that is not the way to do it, and you need to build a new staff.
Paddy Whacks Irish Sports Pub has recently opened up a third location in the city at the former site of the Monte Carlo Living Room. Yesterday was my first visit to this new bar and I will definitely go back. It has a modern design, numerous amounts of flat screeen tv's to watch the big games, good beer selection (includung $3.00 Guinness!), and great food. The menu has both typical bar food and some Irish favorites. I ate a very tasty roast beef sandwich with provolone on a kaiser roll. (In fact, I would rank it 2nd best in the area to the Ale House in Newtown Square.) On the side, there were homemade chips with an Old Bay like seasoning which were awesome. My friend had a buffalo chicken wrap which she noted was "delicious". There were also other elements that I enjoyed about this bar-the volume was turned up for the football game instead of listening to the juke box and the ratio of guys to girls was significantly higher. So ladies, if you're looking for a man, this is a place to be! I'm not sure what the bar is like later on in the night since we left around 8pm. But, there are 3 levels and they have a dj. I'd be interested to check it out. Some of my fellow patrons told me that the other Paddy Whacks tend to have a "younger" crowd however the age range @ this location had a nice mix. I'd recommend it to anyone now that the NFL playoffs, hockey, and college basketball are in full swing.
