My lover and I were armed with a desire to get away from the bay and an upcoming three day weekend...after much searching, we settled on the Packard House as cute, close to the ocean and near the restaurants/central Mendo strip. With these things alone it would have been a good place stay; once we arrived and started to explore, it just got better and better.
Both proprietors we met were friendly gay men with local recommendations and charming demeanor. The wireless was as fast as the walk to town center; the ocean was audible from our private cottage, but not so close as to deafen. We had a personal parking spot right next to our back door, and were presented with the most sumptuous breakfast ever upon opening the front door in the morning. It was huge! fresh! amazingly tasty! I've been to many a B&B, but no breakfast compares.
Nothing bad to say about this place. 5 star place to stay in a beautiful artsy coastal village.
I am currently finishing up a two-night stay at the packard house. Very cute place. The furnishings and decor are nice and the grounds are pretty. The staff are great. The breakfast basket we received yesterday was awesome. It had fresh organic yogurt and fruit and pastries. Very nice. Biggest complaint, it didn't come until 9am. For those of you who get up early (guilty) you have to go grab something to tide you over. Another knock that makes it four instead of five stars, we stayed in a cottage with the smallest shower ever and no tub. You can barely turn around. That being said, very nice place and service. Would stay here again if we come back.
Wonderful...
I escaped to Mendocino on a much needed getaway. Tip: leave early from SF or else you'll end up driving through a pitch black Redwood forest. Not so fun when alone and no cell reception. The only way to distract myself from imagining Jason from jumping out of the darkness was by rappin' Jay-Z's, "Can I Get A..." repeatedly but restarting my iPod from the beginning whenever I messed up.
The Garden Cottage was my home for the next couple of nights. Comfy Cal king-sized bed with plush duvet and down pillows were absolute heaven. The spacious room housed sumptuous couches, an amoire housed-TV with gas fireplace as well as a small dining area that was illuminated by a wall of windows and French doors that led into the garden.
My absolute favorite was the over-sized tub. I dimmed the lights, turned on the fireplace and lit the candles(I don't think that they're allowed), turned on some smooth jazz and was in heaven with a glass of an earthy Pinot.
Waking up to a basket left on the porch filled with freshly baked flaky pastries, home-made yogurt, just-squeezed orange juice, hot loose leaf tea and assorted fresh fruits was such a treat and nice break from having to B&B socialize when all I really yearn at times is silence.
Owners are pleasant and non-intrusive. I truly enjoyed my time at the Packard House.

Although there is no wireless here and I'm tethered to a really slow connection via my Samsung Blackjack II (wow, are you sobbing tears for me now, bunky?), this is a really nice Inn. And friends, I'm really not an Inn person. Give me a large impersonal hotel any day versus a place where I need to chill over the free wine with a couple from the Texas hill country. Please! And now! Not that there is ANYTHING wrong with the Texas hill country. You think those folks want to talk to some obnoxious bastard like me?
The other reviewers here have it dead on. Lovely modern furnishings in a very old wood framed building. A serious attention to detail. Tasty full inn breakfasts. An insanely comfortable bed that would put the Westin Heavenly Bed, etc., etc. to shame. And yes, the Kiehl's products (you do know they're owned by the L'Oreal folks, don' t you?) are very nice.
Mendocino is beautiful...for about 40 hours every couple of years. And we will put Packard House high on our list of places to return to.

Just spent 3 days here. I've stayed in 100's of B & B's around the world. I've slept in some real frowzy, ugly, dirty, and mis-managed B & B's. And conversely, I've slept in real palaces where the staff treated me like royalty.
Packard house merits just 3 YELP stars. The place is a bit-run down. Doors stick in the frames. The front door is a bitch to open if you are carrying anything in your arms. Exterior paint is peeling in spots, our fabric bed frame had shoe polish stains on the lower portions. The king bed was super comfortable. The linens are top notch quality. The big bath tub has a jacuzzi.
We had the Village view room. Size was smallish at 80 square feet. I felt a little cramped here. Watch your head entering the room, weird old house cieling contour at the bedroom door is lower than 70 inches.
The breakfast food was merely "the B & B cookbook" recipes. I can cook better myself.
Value: $239 per night for this room? Not a bargain. But prices for everything in Mendocino are outrageous. We ate meals down the street that were equal in quality to Bistro Liaison in Berkeley, or Scopa in Healdsburg for twice the price. That seems to be the norm in Mendocino.
I would not stay here again. Neither Packard House, nor Mendocino.

4.5/5
I really enjoyed staying at the Packard House during a weekend getaway in Mendocino. Unlike most B&B's which tend to be more on the rustic side, this house has been beautifully restored and is modernly decorated. The common areas are pretty spacious, comfortable and nicely furnished. The Village View room has a view of the garden and gets lots of natural light. The bed is plush with piles of down pillows and luxurious linens. There is a fireplace in the room, a flat-screen TV, Bose CD player and wireless internet access. The private bath is nice and stocked with Fresh products.
For breakfast (served at 9am), you get to choose between a two-course meal in the dining room or a continental bread basket delivered to your room. One morning, we had a baked banana with coconut sprinkles and an egg souffle and the next, we got a baked pear and a poached egg with hollandaise sauce. There is afternoon wine hour as well.
Room rates are pricey ($225-275) although comparable to most B&B's in Mendocino. Btw, no dogs allowed. Also, book early. The B&B was full on the weekend I was there with plenty of vacancies around town. Rates are cheaper at the J.D. House, the sister property to the Packard House.

Fuzzy robes, fuzzy slippers, fuzzy towels. Down comforter. Microwave. Mini fridge. Jetted tub. King size bed. Fireplace. Private entrance to our cottage. Clean. Quiet. Yummy baked goods and yogurt. Keihl's products in the bathroom. Personalized stationary. Tasteful, understated decor. A CD player and two alarm clocks. Flat screen TV and DVD player. Gorgeous garden. These guys have thought of everything. And best of all - reasonable prices (for the area).
We were impressed. Will most definitely be back.

We spent a lovely weekend in Mendocino. How can a weekend in Mendocino not be lovely? canoe rides, craggy cliffs and that swelling ocean? I mean please people, this is the Perfect Getaway!
The Packard House was lovely. We enjoyed our Garden Cottage, especially that luscious bed and our separate entrances (2!). We preferred our breakfast basket, even though we had special arrangements for breakfast in the house our second morning. The basket had more delectables, such as vanilla brown cow yogurt with homemade preserves. Yum.
Rebecca the innkeeper was so sweet. She is relatively new there and probably still learning the ropes. My sweetie said he was given some conflicting information before and during our stay such as amenities we'd have that were then not available to "cottage" guests such as booking an in-room massage. Still, I'd rather stay in a cottage for the privacy factor. Everyone we met at the PH was super friendly and laid back.
Wine hour in the afternoon--nice!
Wireless (previous reviewer didn't have it?) worked fine if a little slowwww. Who needs a computer in Mendo? Just turn it off and relax. We had massages at the sweetwater Inn and that was divine.
Back in reality again, I miss Mendo and our little all-inclusive Garden Cottage.
Most B&Bs have a country kitchen decor. If you're not a fan of gingham, but you still want a room in a cottage, Packard House is your destination in Mendocino. The rooms look like something out of the Room and Board catalog - clean lines, large beds, white linens. There are four rooms for let; some have views, some have oversized jet tubs. The pictures on their website give you a good idea of what you're paying for... oh, and you'll be paying quite a bit. Rooms aren't cheap, and there's a two-night minimum.
The innkeeper acts sort of like a concierge. She has passes to some of the local wineries and serves wine in the afternoon. She can get you reservations at the local restaurants or suggest day trips.
Breakfasts are served downstairs, or you can have a continental breakfast basket waiting outside your door if you want to sleep in. I'm not much for overly precious breakfast food, so that wasn't a highlight for me, but if you're really into quiche or scones with different types of currants, you'll be delighted.

I hate country chintz and so the idea of of staying at a B&B that might remind me a grandma's house in some story book wasn't my idea of a vacation but the Packard House was MODERN! Gasp! And super comfortable with Kiehls products, jetted 2 person tubs, the softest towels and robes ever, as well as an amazing breakfast basket.
I stayed at the Bellagio for 2 nights in Las Vegas and didn't have half the great experience and pampering that I got at the Packard House. Just little details thought out and for what is essentially a house in the middle of a small town, you get the best. It's quiet, you get a choice of a sit down breakfast or a continental basket delivered to your door at 9am, and no nosy innkeepers. It's the comfort of a high end hotel with the friendliness of a B&B.
It was so hard to leave. We wanted to stay forever, but as that would drive us bankrupt, we settled for another trip as soon as we can save up. It's not cheap, but decent for the area for everything you get. It was worth it and my husband can't thank me enough for finding this gem.
I absolutely fell in love with this B&B. Reason being that this isn't your typical B&B. To be honest I cannot stand traditional B&Bs with their Victorian design, shared bathrooms, and a little-too-homey feel. Some people may say that if I don't care for that then I'm not really a fan of a B&B. But I feel differently--B&Bs don't have to be drab, used, and "cozy." It can be modern, simple, and elegant.
Sentimental memories running wild:
Ring the doorbell *bzzz*. Door swings open. Greeted by a rosy-cheeked, sweet-looking woman: "Welcome! Please come in!" Enter and enjoy the beautiful modern and somewhat European design, simple lines and warm colors of the house. Enter your room--high ceilings, elegant furniture, modern conveniences. Lay on the baby's-butt-soft, plushiest comforter in the world. Crawl under the covers to hear your back breathe a sigh of relief. Freshen up and saunter outside to inhale the fresh air and see the ocean from where you stand, taking your breath away and instantly your shoulders are feeling much less heavy. Feel a smile creep onto your face as you start walking downtown--you're home.
Logical brain taking over:
Considering downtown Mendocino is about the size of two city blocks of San Francisco, Packard House is in close proximity to anywhere you want to go in downtown Mendocino. It can be considered the perfect location for an evening stroll into downtown or just far away enough from distracting lights to watch the stars above. Breakfast is good, made fresh every morning served with coffee, OJ, or tea. Unfortunately this great weekend getaway doesn't come cheap. It'll bite a chunk of about $300 per night out of your checking account, often with a 2 night stay minimum, but if you're in the mood to splurge and you enjoy the small town atmosphere, this experience may just be what you've been looking for.
The only reason I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because their cancellation policy is no exceptions, no matter what the circumstance--and I mean any circumstance including emergencies.
If you are searching for a similar experience but are on a slightly tighter budget, visit their sister property: JD House. I believe they have rooms that will be about $200 per night and is closer to the downtown area. It's actually only a few blocks away from Packard House and has a different feel to it. I haven't visited yet but I intend to stay there on my next stay.

I have avoided B&Bs in the past, mostly because floral prints and country decor give me a headache. This place was fantastic; the opposite of the typical B&B, complete with new everything, very tasteful, modern decor, and a gourmet breakfast that rivaled food we had in town. We elected the basket delivery one morning, and the two-course meal the next; both were fantastic, and I couldn't tell you which I liked more. The owners were just wonderful, striking that balance of being very helpful and warm, but not intrusive. A tough line to walk sometimes, but these gentlemen are pros.
A great location, within easy walking distance of everything in "downtown" Mendocino. If we go back up the coast, we wouldn't stay anywhere else.
