I was painfully sick for several days, a whole week of calling out of work, no audible voice and long nights of difficulty breathing when I decided that instead of paying my doctor the 5dollar fee I would splurge and try PCOM for 20 (student).

It was a great decision.  I truly felt amazingly better, went straight from my appointment and took a test at Hunter (got an A) and was even able to host a party two days later...with speaking...and with several ex boyfriends present.

I will not be silenced!

Thank you Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, thank you.

After seeing an impressive presentation on acupuncture during our honeymoon,  we were excited to come back to the city and find some quality treatments. I booked an appointment at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine.

I had a very good experience. My therapist (Anna) was not only an acupuncturist she was also a yoga teacher. She and her assistant seemed warm and welcoming, and happily answered all my questions and put me at ease. Over time we developed a friendly relationship wherein I looked forward to seeing her every week.

My husband on the other hand couldn't have had a more different experience. His therapist wasn't very communicative or informative of the treatments, and whereas I was sleeping peacefully in a private room he was shuffled between communal areas and private rooms. One evening he looked particularly disturbed, and I discovered it was because his therapist (without warning or asking) punctured him through his  (non-sanitized) t-shirt. My eyes widened in you-could-be-infected horror. We reported the incident to the director of the program, was assured that this was common practice though the therapist should have warned him (or asked), and the next session they'd ensure he'd get a more experienced practitioner who would not be so cavalier about hygiene.

The next therapist (Kai) seemed eminently better. We felt confident we now BOTH receive good treatments. But when I saw strange marks on his back from his second treatments I started to have my doubts. He remarked that the floor supervisor had examined him closely and pinched his back unbelievably hard. I said nothing, thinking maybe it was a one-off.

The third time my husband emerged from his session he came back with a slithery 3" angry red bruise on his neck! I was shocked. He recounted that the supervisor had once again come in and poked and prodded him, announced that he knew (based on the previous session) that my husband could "take it", and pinched him so hard on his throat my husband flinched just describing it. I was beside myself. Thankfully my husband is in graduate school -- where indiscretions resembling hickeys aren't so unusual, but what if he were going to his job? Just a couple months ago he was working in the most conservative Wall Street  bank, how would he have explained this unseemly very visible bruise / indiscretion to his colleagues.

We both stopped going. It didn't matter that my therapist was good. I was put-off from any institution that would practice like this. Frankly they administered treatment too heavy on the violence and too little on the healing. While we may still be willing to try acupuncture, we're only interested in licensed practitioners with a lot of experience.

This really for me is a "meh" review, a 2.5 star review. Yes, it is an affordable place to get acupuncture done. I mean, where else can $26 or $60 pay your way? However, the experience did not inspire me to go back. Everyone was nice, but the deal is that you either get a novice intern to stick you, or you get a licensed practictioner with 5 students watching the procedure. I did the latter. I did not feel like I got the kind of treatment I would have received if I were not being used as a guinea pig--a lot of instructing the students eats into your time. A mis-placed needle started to droop at one point and was painful.
In other words, if you absolutely can't afford to see a private practicioner and mmuuusstt have acupuncture, this is an option. If you can save up some money, you'll have a much better session elsewhere.

Anyone that's able to thoroughly massage my cheeks (you know where) while talking about the benefits of rice milk earns BFF status, in my opinion.  In all seriousness, I have had nothing but great experiences with massage and acupuncture treatments here.  All of my practitioners have been knowledgeable, friendly, and courteous to my health needs.  The staff also helps me book my last minute appointments for next day.  Oh, and didn't I mention the prices are inexpensive? ($45-55)

I LOVED my acupuncture experience and the staff is warm and welcoming. My skin glowed and my stress decreased as a result of going to Pacific for treatment. I love Jen Aubert. You should try to work with her if you go. Wonderful. I look forward to going back.

This place is amazing!  I have been suffering from serious anxiety attacks, stress and post traumatic stress.  It was so bad I barely could function.  With in two appointments I am practically back to my old self.  They were helpful, understanding (while I cried trying to give my medical history) and flexible.  To top it all off its very reasonable, with a $42 fee per session! I have no doubt I will continue to receive any acupuncture from them while in NYC!

If you are looking for affordable, high quality acupuncture, check out this amazing spot. The intake is very thorough...you will be there for 2 hrs! They also have an herbal pharmacy (?) where you can get teas and other raw herbs, if your acupuncturist recommends it.

The Pacific College of Oriental Medicine is a great place to enter into the world of acupuncture at a price that doesn't hurt the wallet.

From my understanding, most acupuncture practitioners charge anywhere from $70-120 a session.  At PCOM, the cost is at least half that with every fourth visit free, which is a great benefit.  Sure, as it is a college, your appointment is handled by a student, but all are seniors on their way to graduate with a few months, so they're definitely proficient enough to handle many treatments.

Of course, this is also a drawback.  When you do find someone you like who understands your treatment and body, before long they've graduated and you're left to start sessions with another hopefully promising student.

My sessions started some years ago as a way to quit smoking.  The year prior I tried cold turkey and picked the habit back up not long after quitting.  The second time, using acupuncture not only helped to kick me of the habit, but also to avoid some of the pitfalls which occur, like being irritable and sudden binging of food.  I was so amazed with my treatments that I kept on with them to help balance the energy in my body as well as a source for relaxation.

They also have a pharmacy of Chinese herbs, so you also have the option of supplementing your treatment, though it is optional.  I've tried some of the herbals and found they don't do much for me, but they were not costly for the amounts given.

I highly recommend trying out PCOM, even if it's your first time experiencing acupuncture.  Even if you don't find a student to your liking the first time, keep going back until you find a good match - you won't be disappointed!

I don't know what took me so long to find this spot, as a bargain beauty babe.  Acupunture done student cost $40 and my initial consult with Paul and two other students was in-depth and professional.  Needle placement was about the same as other acupunture treatments, but the next step I have never experienced something called moxying(sic).  The heat the needles and and a warm sensation over the skin as well as a medicinal herbal smell ensues.  This was a phenomenal treatment.  Friday, I am scheduled for massage which for any style is $50- w'ell talk Friday afternoon.........

This is a great place to go to get accupuncture or Chinese medicine.  It's a school, so the practitioner who treats you will be a student, but a supervisor will be present and they give you a thorough diagnosis in a clean unquestionable environment.  And every fourth visit is free!

some interns are good, some are amazing - it's a gamble!  but a great introduction to acupuncture nonetheless.  follow the amazing ones!
