I've been here twice and I loved the food every time! I tried their veggie melt which consist of pesto sauce, tomato, avocado, black beans, your choice of cheese, and mushrooms on top of a thick toasted bread. It also came with really good fries, how good you ask? Like crispy, holds it shape, and salted good!

The only down fall is the amount of time it takes to get your food. So you're probably going to end up taking an hour and half lunch. It's not a place to get something quick for a business lunch, but a nice place to hang out and grab a beer.

Atmosphere is terrible, the whole place looks dirty/dusty and run down.

Food is hit or miss, mainly miss.  They try to do too much and end up failing miserably, but I guess it needs to sound posh to charge what they do.

Beer is average.  However, don't make the mistake of trying to order a guiness (don't let the guiness signs fool you) because they don't have it on tap or in a can.

Lastly the service is really bad.  The wait staff acts like you are bothering them and the manager won't go out of his way at all.  I work close and a big group (20+) have gone over their multiple times.  I then asked him if we could hold a going away party there for about 40 people, all eating and drinking on some random week night.  He said he wouldn't hold any spots for us, basically we could come there and find whatever open spot there was.  Gee thanks.

No happy hour, no happy customer : (
I'd been here before years ago but found my way back via online coupon.  Arrived early after work to find the place half full.  I found a cool seat and asked about the happy hour specials.  No happy hour.  This is really a downer for me.  It's not that I'm cheap but more about welcoming workers coming off the job.  When a place doesn't have a happy hour, I usually don't come back.
Now I had a coupon for two samplers of five brewery beers and one appetizer.  Out of the five beer samples, I only liked one.  This place is really for the dark beer drinkers, the guinness/molasses type stuff.  I'm more for the lighter, crisper stuff.
For the appetizer, I had the nachos.  I wasn't impressed by those either.  Halfway through, it was a soggy, sloppy mess of wet tortilla chips.  Didn't finish it.
The place looks cool and some of my neighbor's plates looked better than what I ordered.  My favorite part is the men's restroom covered in Giants/49ers championship magazine covers.  Street parking is OK.  I think there might be better spots in the area.

So disappointed. Not only was I sad to pay $55 for a very simple lunch, but I also had to put up with horrible service.

The food was bland bar food served in a sloppy half-assed fashion. The avocado on the salad was completely mush and the bacon appeared to have been frozen and thawed at least three times. The beef brisket special was half lard and half charred.

    Won't be going back.

There wasn't much open on the Sunday night that I arrived in Oakland besides this and Yummy Guide.  Since nothing on Yummy Guide's menu tempted my palate, I chose to get a to-go order at Pacific Coast Brewing Company.  The bartender was entertaining a small group of guys enjoying a late Sunday-night round, and happily took my order.  The atmosphere seemed like the type of pub I'd enjoy - not too loud (granted this part of Oakland isn't exactly hopping & bopping at this time of day), adequately clean, friendly clientele.  The food was fine, nothing great, but not much I could complain about given that I had no other options.  If in town with someone to eat with, I'd consider returning for a meal here.

When I'm in the mood for a delicious turkey burger or hearty shepherd's pie, strong IPA, and watching a ball game I come to Pacific Coast Brewing Co. Ample amount of space to stretch out and I always appreciated the delectable condiments on each table to dress up any dish. Service has always been consistently good and the portions are ridiculously huge so come hungry. I think it's nicer then some pubs I have been to and the brewery vats are downstairs. Parking in Old Town Oakland has never been a problem and it's within walking distance to BART too.

I love my places to watch sports when I can't find a decent stream online and I feel comfortable walking into Pacific Coast. Just remember they don't serve liquor, just beer and wine so come thirsty to try anyone of their guest and/or personal taps.

Once time we found a hair in the food but at least they refunded that meal.

    Good beer selection.

Too expensive for what it is.

The BF and I happened across this place on a lazy Sunday.  We were in the mood for something to eat and a beer.  I was not aware of PCBC before this.  An amazing selection of beers,  all their own brews!  The sweet potato fries were really good and the Reuben was off the hook.  Nice atmosphere,  kind of English Pub (ish).  They have a great patio.  Its a great area in old Oakland with a lot of charm.  We'll be back.

The service, beer, and atmosphere are all very nice.  I come here every week and will keep doing so.

The food is good, not great.  They probably won't be winning any culinary prizes, but the straightforward pub fare will feed you and your friends while you drink their great beers.

The beer selection is quite good, particularly their own beers and the many local beers they carry.

I had been here one before for St. Patrick's Day. They were SLAMMED! Though I enjoyed my Corned Beef and Hash, it wasn't notable enough to make me return for a few years. Boy has this place changed! Particularly their menu. I think they got a new chef?

I loved their Sausage & Ham Stew w/ white beans. It was my absolute FAVORITE! Soooo tasty! The shrimp avacado salad was also good, but I loved that their chef was willing to take a chance on their Deep-Fried Pickle with Aoili! I HAD to try it and it packed a surprisingly savory taste with a sour snap and a crunch at the end!

Not to be understated, they also have many of their own beers on tap. After trying them all, and I'm normally a dark beer drinker, I was surprised to be impressed by Leslie's Xtra Pale Ale was also very tasty!

Lots of seating during the midweek, including a heated patio, this place offered a pleasant surprise with a fresh, changing menu for new flavors on a surprising, local adventure out.

Props to new ideas! And, props to their Chef!

    I'll be back!

Been in here a couple of times for beers. Excellent beer selection and the house brews are good. Never eaten here so I can't speak on the food. Nice space with several different areas, and the staff is friendly. Good place for a group- never too crowded from what I can tell, and the volume level is pretty low. Several large TVs. Would be a good (4-star worthy) place to watch sports except that the staff can't seem to find Comcast SportsNet (based on my experience last night, trying to watch the Warriors game here), which rules out watching most bay area sports here. Luckily there is a proper sports bar down the street- Grand Oaks Sports Bar- which, while smaller and louder, has plenty of TVs with all the games on. PCBC is not a bad option if you just want some beers and conversation.

Came here before a concert with my dad and mom. holds a special place in my heart because this is where my dad took me for my first drink after I finished taking the California Bar Exam at the Oakland Convention Center. (he also had lunch for me every day between exam parts to talk over the text and make me feel like I was kicking it's ass. thanks dad) But I digress...

the lamb sliders are ridic. the ploughmans platter is crazy good (the manchego cheese is the same brand i get from Rainbow Market) and the Calamari is always really good.  We also always get the beer sampler.  it's fun for a group.  Also lots of tvs at lots of angles for watching sports with a group of friends (no awkward neck angles or sitting everyone squished together at one side of the table like it's the last supper).

While staying at the Oakland Center Marriott across the street, I looked out the window and looking down at the dark and scary Smart and Final parking lot,  in the darkest corner a brightly lit up "PUB" sign beckoned me to chance the creepy walk thru that funky parking lot and try a microbrew along with a some kobe sliders.  The beckoning worked.

Tried their house pale ale and some of those sliders.  Hit the spot.

    - Lotsa TVs around for the sports fanatics.
    - Patio seating with heaters when needed
    - Cool part of downtown Oakland

Went here on the Tuesday evening of the Bar Exam at the nearby Convention Center.  I needed a beer after the experience, so found this place and decided to unwind a bit on their back patio.  My waitress was GREAT. Not super friendly, but on top of her stuff, getting to me super quick, getting me my beer and food in a very timely manner, etc.

I had a really interesting "Southern Hemisphere" Sierra Nevada I'd never even heard of, though I've since been told I should have tried some of their in-house brews.  I got the special of the night - a beef brisket sandwich with fries.  While I don't think I was expecting the sandwich to come with melted cheese and peppers on it, the flavors worked and the meat was pretty tender.  Definitely a cute place in Old Oakland, and I'd recommend it for people looking for a place to just relax for a little while.

Here for our friend's 40th surprise birthday. PCBC was right next to our hotel. How convenient!

    LOVED:
    - Assortment of beers. Maui Coconut Porter was awesome as was the Leviathan.
    - Food was actually good. I got the spinach and chicken breast salad. Hubby ordered meatloaf plate. Potatoes were interesting. I think they had blue cheese and horseradish. Hoping it wasn't natural mold...
    - Vibe. All kinds of people there. Love mixed crowds.
    - Service was good. Our waitress was very attentive.

DIDN'T LOVE the gnats circling around my beer...

Would definitely go back the next time I'm in Oakland.

The beer selection was very good, I had the sampler, because I'm not really a beer snob, just an average beer drinker and will drink anything. Nice place to come for drinks, and not expensive at all.

East Bay Brewery Tour Stop #4

Wasn't on our agenda for the day, but I am so glad we stop in. Upon entering we were looking for a seat and a guy waved us over to the table he was sitting at and then moved to a stool. Later we realized he worked he worked here. Our server continued the superb hospitality by recommended beers and other beer bars in the area. They weren't doing samplers so we ordered their Gray Whale Pale Ale and their Blue Whale Amber Ale...loved the hops with this one.  Later we tried their Emerald Red Ale, which is brewed for St. Patty's Day with a great balance between malt and hops.

This place is just like Eric B. said "where everybody knows your name" Everyone was so friendly and you know its a good meeting place when the staff continues to stay and drink their own brews.

They have a lot of great guests beers on tap, like Pliny & Blind Pig! I want to come back and try their other beers. The beer was good, but the hospitality really stood out.

I've been here a handful of times over the last few years.  The beer selection usually seems more, I don't know eclectic, but yesterday all they had were IPA's, Stouts, one Porter, and one wheat.  WTF.

I'll just recap all the elements so as not to repeat what everyone else seems to say.

Beer: As I mentioned, not a lot of variety a the moment.  But I do know they rotate guest brews.  Actual Pacific Coast beer is well, mediocre like everything else.

Service: Meh.  The girls are kind of hawtie and mediocre, the manager serves once in a while and it's clear why this place is lame.  HE's Lame and not very knowledgeable.  I also don't understand why there are 15 different workers walking around at any time, drinking in front of customers and standing around watching TV.

Food: Double extra MEH.  The descriptions sound awesome, but I am always disappointed.  I recently had the Crab salad, and yesterday I had the Avocado & Cucumber sandwich.  The crab salad tasted like coleslaw and canned crab, and the sandwich (which seriously, how can you mess this up?) was so ridiculous.  White bread (really??) and it seemed like the edges were stale or toasted...either way it caused serious sandwich structure compromise.  It's as if no one could give a shit and just slapped crap on a crap piece of bread, smeared gobs of mayo and sent it out.

Atmosphere:  WORST.JUKEBOX.EVER. I don't know about you, but listening to really slow country songs, followed by raging metal is not my idea of a joyful saturday afternoon lunch.  Turn the jukebox off during the day if you're gonna have people glued to the horse races or football or whatever.   And anyway, it's a restaurant, remove the jukebox altogether and play a decent iPod mix like everyone else.

I think I and everyone else really want this place to be better because it's awesome Oakland has it's own brewery.  But too bad it's so lame.  I can't even understand how they're still open.  Buy a clue and hire me to turn the place around.

there are some great beers here -- damn strong ones too.
The service is always a bit slow and it takes a while to get the food and drinks out, but if you're not in a rush the food is pretty good.  Nothing amazing, but a convenient place to go if you're in the neighborhood (although I suppose you could say that about anywhere)

They did seat 6 of us at a table that seemed big enough for four, which was kind of annoying.  Good thing we liked each other though.

i work for a hotel in the area. came in here last sunday to order there eggplant sandwich on my lunch break. the bartender was busy so i went to grab what i thought was the menu. well that rude bartender told me "go put that back, thats the beer menu, if you dont then i will have to"....ok well arent YOU the one working. and whatever happened to being kind and courteous? well thats out the window at this place.

furthermore, the eggplant sandwich i ordered looked nothing like the photos other customers had posted on yelp. it was served on a hoagie bun, the first bit i took the bun broke in half, making it extremely difficult to finish the rest of the sandwich without everything falling out and all over the place...i wonder what genius thought that was a great idea.

NEVER coming back there, NEVER sending out guest there, rather discourage them from trying this local brewery. sending then straight to beer revolution, where there are tons of great places to eat near by.

rude bartender. messy sandwich. horrible experience. :P

BLAH!!!  That's all I have to say about this place.

I asked what the waiter recommended and got just that. Fried chicken sandwich with french fries. Given that everything was fried, I expected it to be a bit on the greasy side, but HOT DAYMMMM... I felt like I CONSUMED a liter of OIL.

For an $18 lunch, I rather stick with IN n OUT burger. At least I know their french fries are made fresh.

The parking meter was running as I dropped by after work at Pacific Coast Brewing for "A Beer and a Nosh". Actually, my car was parked about 4 blocks away, but the pay station in front of this place was one of the few that were working. So as long I needed some respite after another round of Oakland City incompetence, why not here?

I've been here off an on over the years, and this place continues to have a  "where everybody knows your name" feel that I like. And as Ivy R. mentions, this neighbourhood does have a quaint and breezy Americana vibe about it. Gayle knows I like Brewpubs, but I try not to push my preference too often when we're out together. Hence, it's been awhile since I've had the opportunity to stop by.

I ordered a pint of Pliny the Elder IPA and an order of sweet potato fries. The waiter took my order quickly and the food and drink were out almost as fast. It was actually more refreshment that I needed. I proceeded to nurse it all this tasty food along as I relaxed and read parts of the day's New York Times. Unfortunately, my time was short and my soon to be expired meter required my attention. I'll try to be back soon (and after 6 PM on Weekdays), so I can to hang out properly and explore other parts of the menu.

Went for lunch yesterday. Had a tuna salad myself and my guests had sandwiches. The four of us all enjoyed our lunches. The portions were large and the fries delicious, especially the garlic fries. The free parking on weekends is a bonus. I would go back. If possible it would be 3.75 stars.
The negatives were few. I went there for the beer and I appreciate somebody watching my glass so I don't have to work too hard fo a refill. I did have to work a little here to get the attention of the waitress. Also the prices.
They should probably knock a dollar off of most of the prices.

We picked four starters: crab-stuffed mushroom caps, fried calamari, popcorn shrimp, and fried onion rings. Sadly, the first three were losers, and the fourth was adequate but not remarkable.

Crab-stuffed mushrooms were simply embarassing. It was real crab, but mediocre frozen crab, not fresh Dungeness. The mushroom caps weren't Portabellos as promised, just ordinary mushroom caps. Nor were they stuffed, but instead simply smashed under a massive scoop of dull-tasting celery-and-green-onion laden crab salad, with cheap shredded Cheddar melted on top.

Popcorn shrimp were a terrible quality frozen Bay shrimp, not only miniscule in size but in broken pieces. The 'lime-chile aioli' was replaced by a standard commercial tartar sauce, and the cocktail sauce was identical to what comes out of a grocery store bottle.

Fried calamari had to rank as one of the worst we've ever had. Overfried with a too-chewy crust, and served with the same indifferent dipping sauces as the popcorn shrimp. It wasn't a mistake in frying - we saw other diners ordering this an hour later, and it came out the same way.

Onion rings weren't remarkable but certainly far better than their companions, being beer battered thick rings. The 'lime-chile aioli' actually showed up this time as a dipping sauce, and was quite good - in fact, pretty much the best thing of all.

The batters on all three fried dishes were different. The shrimp were a crunchy thick breadcrumb batter - greaseless but also tasteless. The calamari was coated with a thin flour/water batter with fewer crumbs, but fried so hard it was simply unpleasant. Crunchiness is good, but what was on the squid was more like armor plating.

Our companions got a vegetarian pizza, which was overloaded with unpleasantly large chunks and shreds of bell peppers and onions, and the sharp smell of too much cheap pizza sauce, with no cheese. It neither looked nor smelled appetizing, so we politely declined an offered wedge. We were happy to share our onion rings, and if there had been anyone dumb enough to want the shrimp, mushrooms-and-crab, or calamari, we would have given that away as well.

This was a good double-reminder lesson. First of all, don't miss breakfast and lunch, because then you're so hungry you'll eat anything, even food that feels like a solid lump in your stomach as soon as you swallow it.

Second, sometimes one should have some bad food, to appreciate the much better food we normally eat. But honestly, McDonald's and Burger King make better food than this place. If you're drinking beer, maybe you could stomach this sloppily made, indigestible mess...but you'd need a lot of beer!

If you want good food, Seison is next door, and even with their service shortfalls is a far better bet for dinner. Or go down the street to Siam Bay. Anywhere but here, please.

Great beer, excellent antique bar, nice outdoor seating.  The food is decent, and the game is always on.  The crowd is a bit representative of the Marriott Hotel next door, but not in a bad way... it just takes away the neighborhood feel.

This is a great location with a great layout, but the food is not. The menu has a little bit of everything, all of which is just OK. I pretty much just stick to the burgers when I come here now. However, its still the best casual place to eat in the neighborhood and have a few beers.

Im not sure why people complain so much about the service here, that actually seems like the best thing going. All the servers are super nice and helpful.

Came in at a quarter to midnight after a concert a the Fox Theater to find out the kitchen closed at 11. Something someone could have put on the website.

My husband had their beer sampler and the most were mediocre, something he and his buddies could have brewed at home.

Probably won't visit again if we ever come back to Oakland.

Convenient location in Oakland not far from BART.  Beer was just alright, as far as house beer.  I appreciated the guest options, which I thought was an odd addition for a brewery (shouldn't their beers be good enough to be all of the offerings?).

Bartender was a bit quirky, and I couldn't figure out why she felt the need to have that stupid septum bull piercing.  Oh well.

Hard to choose this place ever again when there's the famous Belgian bar a block away, and now Beer Revolution a few blocks west.

I wish they had better veggie bar food here.  I know, I know.  Veggie bar food seems and sounds wussie.

The space is okay and airy.  It is in the Old Neighborhood of Oakland, which I love. Near Chinatown.

Good place to go if your favorite place, Trappist, is closed.  Decent beers on tap.  Good, friendly bartenders.  I can never make it here in time for HH, so I am not sure what their specials are like.

Seems like a fairly decent place to watch a sports game.

Still kind of leaves me with a "wish it were more cozy" feeling.

Great beer selection, friendly staff and delicious food!

I'm not a huge beer drinker but given that I was at a brewery (and the fact that don't actually serve hard alcohol) I went for it and ordered a Gray Whale Ale which was light and refreshing and went down entirely too fast. Next up was the seasonal YellowJacket which was rich, frothy and flavorful. I'd actually come back for that one!

You must try Karina's sweet potato fries (named after one of their lovely servers who insisted for months they add this to their menu) - they're to die for (especially dipped in ranch!).
