3 reviews for Pacheco State Park
I've been to this park back in March 2004 before my yelp days, so I managed to go back on Sat 2/3/07.
This park is good in the winter because it can be very hot in the summer. Best time to go is April for the wildflowers. Lots of hills to climb..up and down, repeat. We saw birds, heard coyotes howling, saw rabbits.
Parking is $5 as of 2/3/07 (heard it's going up) and is self registering so bring exact change and a pen to write with. There are 3 pit toilets to use in the parking lot.
We hiked up Spikes Peak trail to Tunnel Monument, went to Spikes Peak, to Bear Hide Lake, then to dry Salt Creek, to Dinosaur Lake. They have tons of windmills on one trail and on a clear day you can see Fremont Peak to the southwest, Pacheco Peak to the west, Mt Hamilton to the northwest, and the snowy Sierra Nevada to the east-said one book I have.
Lots of ticks on some rarely used trail so be careful. It's similar terrain as Henry Coe's back country which is nearby.
We'll probably hike here again, but it is a bit far of a drive. Took us 1hr at 7am Sat morning, but more like 2hrs to get back to Fremont.
We did about 10 miles RT loop hike. 8:50am to 2:25pm with 30 min lunch.
Open yr round, 8am-sunset

Well, if you have a horse you might have more fun than I did. Still, I found the historic aeromotor windmill and the Line Cabin interesting.
I remember back in the day when this was a field trip in school. Not much happening up here except looking at the reservoir and if you're lucky you'll see the people that street luge on Dinosaur Point.
