my absolute first pick for a cheap and easy burger.

went to in-and-out recently, and i was amazed at how much better p terry's is than the old stand-by.

if you need an awesome burger with quality ingredients, and you need it fast, go to p terry's; you'll be happy, full, and only out about 5 bucks.

Each day during the Austin City Limits Music Festival, my boyfriend and I would walk pass P.Terrys off of Barton Springs as we made are way to and from Zilker Park. On the final day of ACL, we decided to grab a late-breakfast (okay, it was really lunch but we had just woken up) there. As we stood in line, which was outside of the joint, we bickered about who was going to order what. In the end, I decided to get the #5 Veggie burger combo and he got the #3 Double Cheeseburger combo. We waited about 5 minutes for our order and sat down on the picnic tables that were alongside of the restaurant. The area was shaded with trees and had a sandbox for the kiddies and pedophiles (just kidding).

As you read all the other P. Terry's reviews, you've probably noticed that most of yelpers proclaim their love for it because it reminds them of the infamous west coast burger joint, In 'N Out. Well, since it's already been declared several times, I'm not going to explain how amazing the burgers were, or how it tasted almost like In 'N Out. I'm not going to waste my time at how it should be labeled the Southern version of In 'N Out or the fact that their milkshakes and fresh cut fries are on par with In 'N Outs. Or even the fact that their prices are incredibly cheap like In 'N Out. No! I absolutely refuse to compare! :P

What makes me a fan of P. Terry's is the fact they go for the extra stretch in order to make their food as "natural" as possible. Their patties are made of 100% angus beef, the produce are bought from local organic farmers and delivered fresh daily, and their veggie burger are homemade with love. The fresh cut fries are cooked in 100% canola oil, which has no trans-fat and hydrogenated oils. Can you say, healthy burger?

Y-U-M.  Great burger for a great price. I go the Lamar location.  The location kind of sucks because of how you have to pull into the joint.  I also don't like that the parking lot fills up quickly.  However, the burger is really tasty.

An added plus is that if you happen to have your pooch in the car, they will give you a dog biscuit with your order. Cute!

I love this place and I will keep going back for a good, well-priced meal. I've never tried In-N-Out, but I may have to so that I can compare.

Seriously, I don't know how anyone in their right mind could compare this to In N Out. It is nowhere near that good!

Honestly, the burgers are alright but it's nothing to write home about. Definitely not worth the RIDICULOUS line that you have to go through. I would much rather head down to TerraBurger or Black Sheep Lodge.

To quote Samuel Jackson "Mmmm....this is a tasty burger!" I definetly understand the comparison to in and out burgers. I got the cheeseburger which had flavorfull meat and good toppings. The parking/drive in is a little bit of a pain in the ass and there is no inside but it is what it is. If you like a good burger check it out, for under 3 bucks it was money well spent!

Solid burger place that reminds me of In N Out.  The burger had good seasoning on it and was topped with fresh lettuce and tomato.  It was late afternoon so I just got the single which enought.  I could see how the double would be a savory treat with those two seasoned patties and the combo of the cheese, lettuce, tomato, and special sauce...much like the double double at In N Out.  The fries were really tasty and a good complement to the burgers.  The chocolate shake was fantastic without being too sweet like some places.  I'll be back.
I will add that as a previous reviewer noted this place is DANGEROUS.  We ate our food on their patio which mean't we had to cross the drive through lane to order and then pick it up when it was ready.  I almost got my arse run over so please pay attention when transporting your food.

Very new to to Austin, and just like most other reviewers, had been told how amazing this place was, and close to (or even better?) than in-n-out. We've just moved from Los Angeles, and maybe the taste of a perfect animal style burger was too fresh in my mouth, but P Terrys was nothing short of disappointing.

My husband and I both ordered hamburgers, and shared an order of fries, which ended up being the saving grace of the meal. The fries were crispy and tasty, if not a little over greasy. When it came to the hamburgers, we both agreed that the meat was unpleasant, with a color and texture reminiscent of grade school cafeteria meat, but with way to much pepper.

But what we both agree was the most disappointing, was the lack of respect for the bun. Not toasted, cheap processed white bread bun, and totally smooshed before it even reached my hands. In fact, the cashier mashed the burger into my hand like he was secretly slipping me illicit drugs.

I recently went back for a second try, and this time ordered the veggie burger. The bun was again smooshed, and the veggie pattie wasn't the worst I've ever had, but it wasn't great either. The mooshy veggie patty combined with the smooshed cheap bun made it hard for me to even want to finish it.

And quit being impressed by organic locally grown tomatoes, when the menu clearly states "when available." They could provide these once a year for all you know!

I won't be wasting my time again. P terry's, you had your chance, and you smooshed it.

I really enjoy the whole package at  P. Terry's. I'm a huge fan of "In 'n Out" burgers, so I am so happy for this burger joint. I live out in Bee Cave (1/2 hr away) and don't mind the drive to get one of my favorite cheeseburgers. The burger is always fresh, and the most delicious fries come perfectly bundled in a special "twistey" paper sac. Then there's the very friendly eating area outside, where your kids can play in the sand box, and your doggies can sit quietly next to you at the table. I've tried many of the "new" burgers places, and they just don't do it like P. Terry's.
............Oh no! Now I need to drive on down there. Got myself all hungry just thinking about it.

BOOOOO!!! This place sucks. It was highly recommended to me by multiple people in Austin, so now I'm doubting this city's take on good food.

Yeah, it's really cool that the company donates money and uses organic tomatoes and treats it's employees well. All good reasons for me to give it a try. But to EVER get me to return it has to have at least reasonably good food.

First moment of truth: the menu. It's EXPENSIVE. Maybe $2.50 isn't bad for a plain cheeseburger, but $3.69 for ONE veggie burger? Seriously guys? I ordered one anyway, because I knew it would be delicious and my boyfriend ordered a cheeseburger.

Second moment of truth: the bag that our two orders come in feels VERRRRY light. Sure enough we open the bag and these burgers are about the size of McDonald's happy meal burgers. You know, the $0.79 ones. No worries, if it's delicious, then it's worth it to splurge on a once in a while rare treat.

Taste: We get home to eat and are MAJORLY disappointed. The fries appear "fresh cut" but have no seasoning and are not very good.  My boyfriend's burger is okay. Kind of plain, not a lot of flavor to it. Definitely not worth the hassle (driving through the ridiculously small drive through and trying to pull out on Lamar after) or the money. My burger is disgusting. It's completely mushy. Like someone chewed up something, spit it back out, and shaped it into a patty. I couldn't even finish my $3.69 mush burger.

Last straw: we both got sick! I didn't get too sick because I only had a few bites of my bf's burger, but he almost broke my toilet pooping for the next day and a half. This is great for all those annies on laxative diets.

Just eat at TerraBurger. It tastes MUCH better and has organic everything. Also the burgers are human sized.

"Shush girl shut your lips, do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips, I said shush girl............"

That's what was playing inside the soundproof Audi as I pulled up to the P Terry's drive thru. I rolled down the dark tinted window and was greeted with "Lets go surfing now everybodys learning how come on and go surfing with me.............."

Its not a Huts burger, You get over that after the first few visits. Its as much about the place, the people, the details, the 11 palm trees on the tiny landscaped site, the guy handing your dog a milk bone through the window as it is about the taste test.

I will submit that a hamburger is more about culture than taste. Its a feeling, a place, and a time. P. Terry's is a bit of borrowed history but as i listen to the Beach Boys I realize something......the dream is a lie but the dreaming is real.

Its a burger stand with a walk up window and guys in white uniforms and red aprons. They serve milkshakes and odd little burgers. There is aqua neon and hand painted signs, dogs, and dog treats. It is directly across the intersection from McDonald's. I agree that Whataburger is better but my family thinks P. Terry night is a special event. My dog rides along and knows the drill. I feel like a functioning part of a local neighborhood by just buying a hamburger here. McDonald's and Whataburger doesn't do that for me. My family and my dog agree with me.

When you go roll down your windows, listen to their music,

P. Terry's is GOOD.  Having eaten my fair share of In-N-Out, they are slightly comparable to each other.  However, INO is a messy, sloppy burger full of guilt.  It is overloaded with grease, sauce, and cheese.
PT's is just better.  Great balance of toppings where no one flavor or ingredient overpowers the other.  The fries are amazing and they are cooked perfect- not limp and soggy like INO, but crisp on the outside and fluffy inside.  I'm a fan, simple as that.

Also, the pebble ice in the drinks is just icing on the cake.

I was not impressed.  The meat that I peeled of the bun (I don't usually eat the buns) was similar to the cheap ground beef at HEB.  Just so-so.  I have tasted delicious black angus beef but this meat did not have the same quality of taste.  Just. Not. Impressed. At. All.

The fries were good, however, and I could have made a meal out of fries only.  Crisp outside and soft inside.  (Like me)  The cost of my meal was around $5.00 which was okay for a cheap lunch.  Otherwise, I'd rather spend more and not throw away part of the meal.

Like everyone else has mentioned, it's the closest thing to In-N-Out here.  Unlike the others, however, I liked P. Terry's.  It's not In-N-Out, of course not, but it's pretty damn close.
The best part:
I went here after a day of tubing, I was famished and loopy from drinking all day and I didn't even look at the menu.  I ordered exactly what I usually ordered at In-N-Out and they had it!  Brilliant!
This Cali girl's a fan! :)

P. Terry's is a solid alternative to every other fast burger joint in town.
It can be very tasty, their Veggie Burgers are satisfying, but not electrifying. Fries are o.k. Chicken Burger is very good.

However, P. Terry's simply doesn't stand up to the In-N-Out litmus test.

Seeing the hundreds of reviews for P. Terry's both good and bad I decided to give it a try.  I drove up to the drive thru line which extended out to Lamar Street; I was kind of worried about being stopped in the middle of the road on Lamar. I managed not to be hit by another car and finally got into the lot which was still a long wait.  All the parking spaces were filled and maneuvering around was difficult.  I had to wait about 30 minutes, thinking is this a good sign or a bad sign, the walk up window had a dozen or so people as well.  So I settled back and decided to watch the people coming and going, it can always be very interesting.  The guy with the 7 inch Mohawk and his girlfriend (not sure here, it may be his boyfriend) were one of many unusual people coming by.

Yes, it is now my turn, I ordered the double cheese burger, fries and drink very cheap under $6. Just because I ordered a vanilla shake also.

I can't add much more to what has already been said.

Burger was good not the best; cooked well done (I never ate at a In-and-out); fries I did not like them (what else is new); shake good.

Lot of construction around here and very little places to park but over all I liked it.

Would I go back?   Sure!

Let's face some facts here, folks:

Most Austin "institutions" are sometimes severely overblown by hype. Some have justified themselves as being worthy of said hype, and others simply pray their hype continues to bring on the unwary or out-of-towners instead of fixing what's broken in their establishment.

I finally tried P. Terrys with the wife and was happy that this burger joint falls into the "somewhat worthy of the hype" category. The burgers were flavorful, and I found my double cheeseburger to be exactly what I'd hoped for - flame-grilled, peppery, with cheese melting all over the damn place. The wife's veggie burger was also very good, and I was happy to sample it a few times as well.

I have two minor complaints...they aren't enough to torpedo this joint, and they certainly wouldn't bat the eye of most folks. Twice I've ordered the fries here and received what appeared to be fries that had been cooked a while before I'd ordered them. Yes, I know things take time and for speeds sake, some items are pre-cooked...but fries take like 2 seconds in a fry-o-later, right? They were limp and a bit rubbery, and shriveled...insert your own joke there, cuz I ain't goin' there. The flavor was alright, but I'm sure they're better when they're relatively fresh.

The second complaint I have is the staff I've encountered via the drive-thru - but it's a complaint I've had for several places and can clearly be shown as my over sensitivity or personal preference in customer service - the teenaged dude working there seemed vaguely annoyed that he was working the window. On one occasion I'd misread the sign (being tired and hungry) and requested onion rings, to which I received an exasperated, clearly annoyed reply, "We don't HAVE onion rings." Thanks, dude, for the soft delivery on that one...maybe a, "Sorry, we don't serve onion rings here" or something like that would be better - but that's clearly subjective. Someone from New York might not notice it or consider it rude, for example...but I do.

I'll be back, especially since every once in a while the lady and I need a burger fix and Top Notch is too far north.

You silly silly Texans. With claims like "Just like In-N-Out burger" I was ready to be very impressed.

WRONG.

The only feature like In-N-Out was the menu - brief and to the point - but it still had 15 more things on it than In-N-Out burger did.

I went just before noon on a Tuesday (today, actually, I just finished my meal) and ordered a hamburger and fries. I'll dissect the experience.

Location: Cute, it's just south of the river in a hip area. There's no seating, it's a shack. That's cool, I dig that. Some great food in Austin comes from shacks (Torchys, Lucky J's). The neighborhood is trendy. The only problem is this has nothing to do with the food.

People: While my order taker was very cheery, the gentleman who packed my bag and handed me my burger looked like pretty sweaty and gross. I know it's hot outside and they're in a little shack - but you're handling my food. Wipe your brow son.

Price: Under $4 for the whole shebang. That earned you a star right there. You're not technically downtown, but you're very close so I'll give you cheap eats in the downtown area.

Hamburger: I'll use haiku:
Dry was the patty
Smashed bun was dry and so stale
Like old left out bread

French Fries: Everyone raves, RAVES, about these french fries. Mine were soggy, cold, and kind of gross. Enough salt and pepper made them palatable but I still have that cold-french-fry-greasy-mouth-feel in my mouth.

None of these problems have I ever encountered at an In-N-Out burger.

Also- why so hard to diss on Mighty Fine Burgers? Their food is far and away better than this - more on-par with In-N-Out burger in all of the above mentioned categories (except location, but who cares? that has nothing to do with my food. if you like it because it's on South Lamar - go to McDonalds across the street. It's better.). If only Mighty Fine could "meat" P. Terry's price point. I guess you get what you pay for.

i've heard a lot about P. Terry's, and decided to see what it was all about. Honestly, the burger reminded me of whataburger as far as the taste, not size. It's a pretty decent burger but I wouldn't put it up against In & Out burgers. The prices are definitely reasonable. I would definitely go back anytime for a bargain burger with a satisfactory taste. There are other places that have better burgers, but if you're in the area, you can't go wrong with P. Terry's.

I have had the benefit of living wthin a mile of both the north P. Terry's and now the South P. Terry's. The quality of food is the same at both locales, but the North location has two serious benefits. 1) You can eat there, inside or out (plus they have a play area for little kids- great idea!) and it's usually not as congested as the South P. Terry's.

My only gripe with the South P. Terry's is that it can be difficult to maneuver your car from Lamar into the line to order which can get pretty long. I had a experience where a lady in a Mustang cut in front of me and proceeded to order 6 of everything on the menu when all I wanted was a shake for my kid. I would have parked and walked up but there were no parking spots and no way I'm backing onto Lamar at 4 pm.
The food is good, really good by my standards. Granted I haven't eaten at McDonald's in 15+ years, but man- the Veggie burgers are amazing. They are made fresh in-house, their own recipe and they are seriously tasty. The Chicken burger is good for the non red meat eaters and my son loves the shakes and burgers. The fries are decent, not great, but good. For the convenience P. Terry's is great. If there were a Terra Burger near me I would probably go there more often, they seem to have healthier choices (for fast food) and sweet potato fries, though P. Terry's Veggie burger beats Terra's IMHO.

P. terry's has helped me rediscover fast food, it's been exciting, like drinking a tall boy of Lonestar- you forget how awesome it is until you end up with one.

I have eaten at too many burger places lately because they are sprouting all over like mushrooms after a heavy rain. So my low standards for my favorite fast food meal has risen. P Terrys, reminded me of the original Kincaids up in Fort Worth, but this  burger was average at best. Not very flavorful , condiments are fresh, bun is OK. Fries , I did not care for , the canola oil gives them an almost fragrant after taste.  Because of the location, prices, the retro look, I still like the place. We did not try the shakes but we will next time. Anyhow, how  can you go wrong with a shake ?
I understand the trend is a healthier burger but doesn't grain fed, free range, Angus beef ,  etc, etc. have some fat content to give it more flavor? Weren't burgers 40 years ago always , greasy and dripping with juice ? And probably, healthier ?

I think the burgers here are pretty damn good. Not the best in town but, definately consistantly good. So why do I give P-Terrys five stars? Well, if you know what I know about conventional meat, and all the antiobiotics and hormones that are put into it you would appreciate P-Terrys more for going thru the effort to get naturally raised meat.  Most people dont seem to care about those things, fine by me, not like we are running out of humans or anything. The organic local tomatos are a plus too. If only more places would do try to get such quality ingrediants.

QUALITY over QUANTITY biatches. Everything here is fresh and higher quality than any other burger joint in town. All the beef is from Harris Ranch which serves up 100% hormone/antibiotic free and fully vegetarian fed cows. The fries are freshly made and never frozen. It sounds a bit like In N Out and for those who have been to that burger haven in Cali know that P Terry's is a pretty damn good clone of it!

The beef patties aren't as thick as some other burger joints but as a result neither are my love handles. =)

Wanna fast burger?

Whether you are in the mood to sit and chill with the kiddos or head down the road to a poker game.  They got you covered!  P.Terry's offers a drive thru with impeccable service and speed.  I mean these guys and gals are fun, friendly and fast!

We always know that the quality is good and the fact that no matter when we go the consistency of the service and burgers is the same.  I know I find it important that I can expect the same quality every time.

I say take a gander and have a burger shake and fries...

Okay, folks.  No doubt, these burgers are great.  BUT - this is what I think is missing that keeps this place from really hitting the burgers out of the ballpark:

1 - Melt that cheese!  When you get a cheese burger, don't you want the cheese to be all gooey and melted?

2 - Butter and toast the buns!  The buns are usually cold.  Weakness.

I love the skin-on fries, although they could be a tad crispier - portion is monstrous!

Overall, one of my favorite burgers around town.

I don't eat burgers on a regular basis...in fact, I try to never eat burgers, but P. Terry's was my first stop upon arriving in Austin.  Not because I believe all the hype (I've had their burgers before), but because it was close to this frozen banana stand I wanted to try.  I'm not going to comment on the burgers because I think the 200+ reviewers have said all you can say.

P. Terry's is a walk-up and drive-thru only establishment.  There is outdoor seating cleverly situated under the shade of 3 large trees.  I went at 1pm today and didn't form a bead of sweat while chomping down on my food.  Amazing!

I had to go to the restroom while there.  They have restrooms accessible from the outside, similar to those old school, dirty gas stations.  The restoom was clean but really cramped.  The second I walked in, I set off the automatic hand dryer.  As I was pulling down my pants, I set it off again...and 3 more times before I actually did my business.  I would recommend moving the hand dryer to another location, but there is nowhere else to put it!  The bathroom is *that* small!

Simply put, P. Terry's is overrated. Yes, you should eat here instead of Jack in the Box or McDonalds. Go local! and all that good jazz. But as local burgers go, you could do lots better. As in Sandy's, which is only a few blocks away. Or Fran's (pretty close by).

I should qualify "better", because Sandy's isn't exactly high-end cuisine. What you're probably after if you're thinking about P. Terry's is a homemade-style burger, simple, a little greasy, but tasty. The burgers here just aren't worth the effort and wait. The ones I've had aren't "a little greasy", they're soggy. The fries are limp. The wait is usually long.

In short, I see nothing to recommend it and lots of nearby alternatives that give you plenty of reason to go elsewhere.

Up Lamar...down Lamar...Up Lamar....Down Lamar....

We kept getting lost trying to find where we wanted to go and everyday we were there we kept passing P. Terry's so I finally said "Hey! Let's stop by P.Terry's and see if they are any good"!

This was my kind of burger, not too big and not too dry.  I ordered a double cheese burger and fries and took it back to my hotel room to test it out.  I was honestly mad when I got down to the last bite. Even  the fries were delicious and that is hard to come by when the burger AND the fries are good.  Usually you only get one or the other.  You can tell they are fresh cut and not frozen.  Fresh cut potatoes just fry different than frozen pre-prepared fries.

I also love the retro colors and feel to this burger joint. It is very 50ish.

Man I wish we had this chain where I llive, I would be going here every other day until I burned myself out.  I guess I am just going to have to make another trip to Austin eh?

P. Terrys is fantastic. The chicken burger is the best I've ever eaten! Good fries sides and great service! Top all that off with extremely great prices!

There was this News Radio episode one time where Phil Hartman received a review that he was adequate and he runs around rubbing it in everyone's face like it was something to be proud of. That reminds me of P. Terry's. I completely support the organic food movement and I am thrilled at the success of this fasty. Yes, I will walk through the dessert to P Terry's if my other choice for a hamburger was the golden arches and I was standing face to face with the yellow and red clown. Compared with its peers of fast food burger places this is a much better option. Its tasty, but I'm not a huge fan of the fries and....

in all honesty, go to HEB, buy a pound of fresh ground chuck, season a cast iron skillet, and I assure you it will be worlds better.

I like their shakes and the veggie burgers are pretty good for fast food. But I don't like the actual burgers, the meat doesn't have much flavor and the fries are always either too limp or super greasy.

The service is always friendly and I like that they list where they get their ingredients from but if I'm going to splurge on my calories and get a burger and fries-this place is not my first choice. Their lemonade is great on a hot day though!!

Me and the big guy (my Dane Apollo) decided to swing by P.Terry's after a long day of running Town Lake and playing in the water.

So I ordered us up 2 doubles with cheese, fries, and my go-to soda (if I get one) DP.  Haha, jk, 'Pollo had a milk bone and some agua, cause it was hawt.

Can I just say, everything was perfect.  Burger tasted great with LOTS of fresh green stuff (must) and just the right amount of "sauce".  I forgot the fries were so legit... I mean, these bad boys reminded me of the ones I "used to" get a Crown and Anchor back in the day... delish!  The DP rounded out the equation and I was in Burger heaven in t-minus 4 minutes, give or take 30 sec.

The only reason PTs isn't getting 5 stars is because, like Elevation, unless your looking for portion control, they're just not big enough.  Which is why I always order the double.

Besides that, 'Pollo got to hang out in the sand box and cool off, that is until some mean 2 year old pulled a tough guy and punked him out of the box.

DC out!

P. Terry's offers a pretty good burger and fry combo for under $5. The portions aren't big, but the regular burger has good flavor and the meal should be enough to satisfy you if you aren't ravenous. The veggie burger, however, is rather mushy and not very flavorful - I wouldn't recommend it. The fries are usually great, but occasionally get served greasy and overcooked. The traffic situation getting out (or even getting in when they're busy) can be a pain in the ass.

Oh, and if you have your dog with you, they'll offer a treat, which is a nice touch.

P Terry's is across the street from House Wine (what a cute little place).  Since they don't have much food, they let you bring something over, so I decided to give this burger joint a shot.

I'm a little cautious when it comes to oily food, but I think I saw a sign that they use canola oil, maybe.  Whatever it was, my stomach nodded to proceed (very mafia-boss style).  I ordered a regular burger and my buddy got a veggie, with the intention to each try half of both burgers.

This veggie burger = yum.  I mean, yum.  Almost more flavorful than the regular burger.  My stomach thought I had done good, but asked me why I didn't get a fork so I could grab up a bunch of those mini-fries more easily.  They were good, but so petite.  Actually, the burger was a little small too; I typically can only eat half a burger, but disappeared the equivalent of a whole one.

This is a quality burger.  The price wasn't bad at all, but you couldn't pay me to go through the drive through.  You would die of starvation before ever getting an order in, while watching the smart folks walk over to order and eat your food.

There's a reason the drive-thru line at P. Terry's is always backed up all the way into Lamar. It's a great alternative to the fast-food chains if you're in the mood for a delicious, fresh burger on the go. A lot of their produce and meat is all natural and organic, and the last time I was there they had boxes and boxes of Idaho potatoes out back. They make their own fries!

The burgers are really tasty, and somehow you just feel a little less guilty eating them because you know they're fresh and natural. The lemonade is great, and the fries, well, they're usually gone before I make it home.
