Review from Joyce L.
I have been coming here for therapeutic massages since 2009 as a way to manage my achy body sustained from flat feet, desk work and sporting strains. I experimented with other therapeutic massage places in SF earlier but this is now my go to place. My first review for Oxygen, in 2009, was also 5 stars.
What I love most is the professional low key-ness of Oxygen (which their sister shop Deep Bodyworks in Downtown SF also has). This is no froufrou massage place. They are here to get shit done... and with me, there's always a lot to get done.
So yes, you're going to walk out feeling like you've been mildly beaten up, but it is pressure necessary to loosen the knots in your body and get you back to body balance.
I have had sessions with a number of therapists here and while there had been one time where I left dissatisfied, the other dozens of visits have been awesome.
Today I had a session with Gayle and after discussing what I wanted from the massage, she asked if I was OK with her working a little deeper such as use menthol balm, heat and chiropractic-like techniques. I trusted her decision entirely and while I'm sore right now, I am feeling warmer from improved blood circulation.
Net-net: I am a believer in massage, and am very glad to have found Oxygen!
A TIP: you will get the most out of your session if you can describe your body - be aware of your daily activities, where you feel tension, bad postures and possible repetitive strains. Also be aware of your discomforts and holler if the therapist is doing too much. All this information will really help your therapist tailor your session -

Gayle did an excellent job on my first visit. She was attentive to my needs and not afraid to go deep. Even a quick visit significantly helped with the shoulder fatigue I was feeling due to heavy trackpad use.
Also, the online booking system was a real plus. It took less than 10 minutes for me to decide I wanted a massage, find Oxygen on Yelp, go to their site and schedule the next open slot on the same day. -
Review from John S.

Gayle is my go to person for massage therapy. I am a starving artist like most of us and juggle "300" jobs that require repetitive motion just to get by in this lovely city we call home. So when I get the extra cash to see her I do.
I've read others mentioning intuition in there assessments of their practitioners and I would also have to follow in that mode of description. She is very intuitive to your body'e needs and is highly educated in her field of practice.
Bottom line is she listens to you and your body, makes recommendations and leaves you feeling rejuvenated or on those days when you need the deeper work... repaired.
THANKS GAYLE! -

I want to add that I've recently been getting massage therapy from Adam. He is one of the most amazing massage therapists I've ever seen. Very expert help! I love it that Oxygen sometimes has short-notice appointments available for those "wake up with a stiff neck" days. They are popular though, so book in advance if possible! I can't stop telling people how awesome Eugenee and Adam both are at what they do.

Swimmy swimmy melt, melt.
Slippy, slidey, sooooothe me.
Mary Anne is a true Mistress of Massage. I saw her a couple of weeks after a rather mediocre massage elsewhere, still with tight shoulders, a sharp pain in my neck when I turned my head, and after a rather emotional event that is too personal to Yelp about.
Mary Anne, sweet Mary Anne, was an attentive listener of my words at the start, and then of my body for the next 90 minutes. She is extremely present throughout the massage, giving my body the precise combination of bodywork that it needed from moment to moment (quite the happy opposite from the set routines I've received elsewhere). She used a combo of deep tissue, swedish, trigger point, and a touch of craniosacral at the end from what I could tell. And it was good. So good.
My husband has seen Sara Beth (no, not all therapists have 2 first names here - just a weird coincidence), who he liked a lot. "She's a lot stronger than she looks, and she knows how to use her elbows!"
Oxygen is located in the Spiral Muse house-building (a very cool business in its own right), convenient for public transportation, though parking is hit or miss. Ring the doorbell out front and wait for your Mistress or Mister of Bliss to escort you in.
They seem to update their Yelp offers with some regularity, so take advantage and slip on down to the melty, slidey puddle of relaxation that awaits you.Listed in: Be Well

After posting my review, I was invited to try another massage at Oxygen and I happily booked an appt.
This time I chose a Deep Tissue massage with Jan who was super professional and attentive. He figured out that a lot of the tightness in my shoulders were being held in my chest muscles and showed me a stretch I could do at home or at work that would help relieve the tension.
I had a much better experience this time around and will be going back for another Deep Tissue massage.
I learned that you really need to know what style of massage you like before you first try this place.
Thank you Oxygen for truly caring about your clients!1 Previous Review: Show all »

My hubby booked an appointment here for my birthday present and I has a wonderful massage today with Eugenie at Oxygen. I had a baby a few months ago and my body has been in some serious need of TLC, so many tight knots and my shoulder and back felt like they were constantly in pain.
Massages are ALWAYS painful for me because I have so many knots and tension in my back, but so worth it afterwards. I told Eugenie all of my issues and she got to work with just the right amount of pressure and worked out a lot of the kinks. (Not all, because that's just not possible in just one session with me, but it's a great start!)
At some points during the massage, I actually fell into a light sleep! It was refreshing, calming, peaceful, and invigorating. I left feeling a thousand times better and overall happier and calmer.
I've also had a massage in the past from Mary Ann and highly recommend her too. This place is wonderful. -

And 3 years later... Adam continues to perform miracles!!! :)
I had planned to see Adam tomorrow for a regularly scheduled massage. But I recently had a major sciatica attack again Sunday which gradually got worse into Monday. My chiro helped with some of the relief Monday evening, but I was still in considerable amount of pain and couldn't continue my early morning skating lessons. BIG figure skating competition in a week (that I've been preparing 7-8 months for) and here I am worrying whether or not I was even gonna be able to skate. I moved up my session with Adam to yesterday since I was in considerable pain to not be focused on my job!
When I got on the massage table, it was with a lot of strain on my left hip. After Adam worked on it, the pain is GONE and I've regained mobility on that left side!!! I also had issues with my IT band on my left knee. It was considerably BETTER than when I walked into his office. Of course, I am still being careful not to undo the work that Adam has done on me for the next couple of days and I have him on speed dial if things get bad again. But I'm a LOT LESS worried about NOT making it to Salt Lake City to do battle on the ice!!! :)Listed in: The Places I Go Out To

I came in to Oxygen Massage Therapy on Saturday under some degree of distress and discomfort due to neck and upper back pain, that started about 2 days prior to my appointment. I was experiencing stiffness of the muscles around my right upper back and shoulder area, which interfered with my daily activities.
I was fortunate to make an appointment with Brian who made a careful assessment of my situation, after witnessing my discomfort on certain movements. He focused heavily on the affected area and really gave it a good deep massage, which gave me the much needed relief. He also offered some advice, such as stretching exercises and other relief measures post massage.
Today, I am feeling a 101% better. The pain is gone and I am able to get a good night sleep because of my visit at Oxygen Massage Therapy and the fantastic body work of Mr. Brian Lee.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Review from Jason B.
It's been three days since the rainy, cold and muddy Sunday morning also known as my sixth U.S. Half Marathon, and my legs feel.....awesome? Why yes they do, much better than years past. Three likely reasons:
1. I trained better. Very proud of the eight mile runs I rocked each night the week leading up to the race. Probably could have forgone the one the night before, but all in all, my legs were better prepared.
2. I ran slower. Yeah, yeah, a good ten minutes slower than last year, finishing in an hour and fifty minutes. But did you read the first part? About rain? Cold? Mud? I'm pointing fingers and making excuses.
3. I saw Jan Sobel afterward. This friendly, personable and very talented masseur took great care of my legs. Massaging. Bending. Pushing out the knots. Anything and everything to bring them back to life. Stairs were still tough when I left, but I was well on my way to recovery, and as of today, almost as good as new.
Oh, and while talking about music I learned he likes Mark Farina. I'm not biased towards people that like house music or anything. OK, maybe just a little.

Madrone is magic. I've gone to her twice and about to make my third trip for a pre-natal massage. When I arrived a lovely woman, Madrone, who exuded gentle confidence greeted me, offered me water and in a reassuring voice walked me through the orientation to Oxygen Massage (minor paper work, where the washroom was and showed me to the room). I never felt rushed and was instantly put into a relaxed state. The massage itself was EXCELLENT. She is strong and very clearly knows how to help a pregnant woman - she is also a birth doula which I found out in conversation with her afterwards and it explained a lot of why she gave such a great pre-natal massage. I would definitely recommend her to other pregnant woman and I look forward to going back for other massages once I've delivered my baby.
The location is in a great part of the Mission. Just ring the door bell out front when you arrive. If there is a delay it is usually because the massage therapist is finishing up with a client - not that they don't know you are there. The interior feels very relaxed and kind of like a home (not an office) which I liked. The rooms have gentle lighting and the music was very calming.
Enjoy! -

I've worked with Layla and Mary Anne, and both are fantastic! I've gotten easily two dozen massages over the years at various spas, resorts, and chiropractors, and I've never experienced anything close to as therapeutic.
Hands-down the most rejuvenating massage experiences of my life.
I struggle to describe it, but it was definitely a collaborative process where we worked through the knots and tension in my shoulders and legs.
I feel like they woke my body up, and I figured out which muscles supported the muscles in pain, and learned how to use them. -

Oxygen is a really cool space with a great location in the heart of the mission but enough away from the craziness.
I especially like Jan Sobel. He seems to have a really powerful intuitive sense of what to work on, where the stuck places are, and just how to move the stuckness without being too hard. Really amazing, a true healer. I have had a lot of massage but few that were as good as Jan's. Jan's massages seem to be as much a spiritual experience as they are deeply relaxing and healing. I so highly recommend him. -

How has a young woman never had a massage before? For goodness sake there is something wrong with this picture so Jason C. treated me. Thank you Jason!
Emily gave me a fabulous massage. I was in a trance for the whole hour she worked on me. She did this thing on my back where she worked with these hot stones and holy shit! That was the most amazing feeling ever. She also took the time to meticulously work out the knots in my neck. Emily was very thorough and caring and put me at extreme ease. I will definitely go back! Post massage I was still in a trance. It is a bizarre and trippy feeling. Remember to drink a lot of water. And first time customers get a special one hour massage for $70. -

Ok - this guy is mindblowing. I'm a massage therapist as well, and I can tell you this is hands down the best massage I've had in my entire life!!
Not only will he make me a better healer by helping my body to feel good, but there's so much I learned from him that I'll be able to pass on to my clients as well. I'll be seeing him regularly for maintence, I just know that he'll keep my body in good working order.
I'm grateful that I found him, I was in pain today and I have a feeling I am going to wake up tomorrow feeling a lot better!! Thank you so much Adam!! -
Review from Maria C.
This is not just another nice back rub. This is a full on treatment.
I hurt myself playing rugby several years ago, work at a desk, fly a lot, lift weights, play ultimate frisbee and despite my best efforts, my neck and back get thrashed.
Enter Adam. I've been going to Adam for a year now and it seems that he has been discovered and for good reason. In addition to exeptional schooling in Massage Therapy, he has a warm and genuine approach with people in and out of his practice. In a world of so many massage therapists, Adam stands out for his knowledge and experience and, man, he just has a knack.
Today, I couldn't get an appointment with Adam, so I booked with Eugenie, the newest Oxygen Massage Therapist. Eugenie went to the same school as Adam, so, again, she is very well trained. Her approach is very warm and genuine as well and if you're one of those folks who prefers a female's hands, you're in luck, but don't think she can't get in deep - she is also very strong.
I recommend Oxygen Massage Therapy to anyone, whether you think you need a massage or not, because guess what- you do need a massage. And you need a good one.Listed in: My very most favorites!!!

I had a massage from Adam, a while back. He was pretty good, but the street noise in the background kinda ruined it a bit.
It was a week day in the afternoon, but still noisy.
I'd just like to get a massage, where I don't have to hear anything from the outside world. -

My sweet angel got me a massage here for my birthday after being recommended by her roomate. I went on Saturday to cash in my b-day treat!
First of all, DO NOT try to park over here. I left with adequate time, and could not find a spot for the life of me and I was late! Precious massage minutes slipping away!!. I ended up illegally parking in a school lot; I was not about to lose any more of my bday present! My advice, take the bus or walk!
Anyways, I arrived, and Emily was so nice and welcoming. She asked me about specific areas I'd like to have worked on. She did a great job digging into the hells of my knotty messed up back. Emily was a little more talkative that the other massage therapists that I've worked with, and she was into asking questions about pressure and which areas where particularly tight. I felt instead of it being just a feel -good rubdown that Emily was really trying to do more problem solving and restorative work, which I feel adds to the actual benefits of massage.
My only drawbacks to this place would be the location. Besides the crappy parking situation, it is also located right on busy 22nd street, and the room I received my massage in was facing the street. I heard every police siren and horn honk throughout my massage, even over the relaxing music. I just didn't feel transported into massage bliss because of all the outside noise.
Even still, Emily's kind work still earns this place a solid 4 stars, and I am considering going back to have semi-regular sessions with her. And best part is; even though I was a little late, Emily still massaged me for a full hour instead of chopping into my time. Not that you should be late for your appointment, but that was pretty cool of her.
Definitely worth checking out, and more affordable than the typical spa rubdowns.
Thanks Emily! -

Based off the strong Yelp reviews, I decided to make an appointment. I was lucky to see that Eugenie was available that very weekend.
Its location on 22nd made it very easy to get to by public transportation . It's a pretty busy neighborhood so parking will be hit and miss for sure.
The only confusing part of the whole experience happened when I was getting inside. There's a doorbell you need to ring to get in. I got there a little early and I didn't want to interrupt an on-going session, so I decided to wait until it was time for my appointment. If there's protocol that I didn't figure out, hopefully someone shares it!
Once I got in, I immediately saw that Eugenie was very cheerful, and eased me into the session. Once we got started, she was very attentive to the problem spot I mentioned to her, which really helped.
She didn't just go through the motions, she really paid attention to what she's doing for the entire time. It was a great job - the deep tissue massage more satisfying than a typical Swedish one that I've gotten before. -

I went to Oxygen for the first time today and was fortunate enough to receive a massage from Brian Lee. It was a great experience from beginning to end. He was very attentive to my needs and wanted to get a clear picture of what I was expecting from him. His energy is calming, yet assertive. His knowledge of anatomy and physiology make him a very trusting therapist.
Brian used "slow and deliberate" movements and was able to get very deep into my muscles. He was open to adjusting pressure to my comfort level.
I had a sore upper back going into the massage and left feeling energized, taller, and relieved of discomfort.
I highly recommend Brian for a massage. I will most definitely go back to him and pass the word along to friends. -

Mainly I just need to say in front of the world: Thank You!! to Oxygen Massage. My work is demanding on my body, and I had gotten my shoulder worked up into the biggest chain of knots, to the point where for two months I'd been in pain and nothing was getting to the source of it.
I spent ONE HOUR at Oxygen, and I have not had a problem since.
The skill and care shown are truly far above what you can find anywhere else. To have someone focus so specifically and thoroughly on what my body needed, and to have it WORK -- is a godsend!
I've now put myself on a "maintenance" program so that it never gets to that point again, and the therapists at Oxygen are keeping my body in balance.
Don't waste your time and money (and time spent in pain) trying out a million massage therapists - go to Oxygen knowing that they will take great care of you! -

Yoshi Kono rocks!
I am someone who has had chronic muscle spasms and other issues since a car accident many years ago. I have had years of experience with massage therapists to relieve my problems and I can easily say Yoshi is one of the best I've ever encountered.
I came in stressed and tired and gave him very little info on my myriad of problem spots. Nevertheless, he found them all right away. He has a very good ability to analyze a person's energy and tension. His demeanor is calm and relaxing, but not in an overly woo-woo way.
I have very stubborn muscles so I wanted a deep, clinical massage. I got it - it was just the right pressure, strong enough to be effective, but not so much I was wincing in pain.
When he was done, not only were my muscles finally relaxed but I regained a lot of range-of-motion in both my hips and my shoulder. He also gave me suggestions of small changes in my lifestyle to reduce my problems in the future.
From a tune-up to a complete overhaul, I highly recommend Yoshi for any time your body isn't working like it should. -

I will definitely back to see Emily at Oxygen. It's been awhile since I've had a massage and have only been to spas or had them at physical therapy.
This was exactly what I needed after working a gazilion hours this past week and having a mild sciatica flare-up.
Emily has a calm, gentle demeanor and really combined the relaxation with the deep tissue manipulation nicely. She found some tense spots and really got them to loosen up.
I left there on a cloud for the next couple of hours, totally zoned out in a good way. -

Adam really listens. He listens to what you have to say before the massage about where you body is tense and painful, and more importantly during the massage he really seems to listen to your body and find and release places of tension of which you weren't even aware.
He is the perfect massage therapist I have been searching for all these highly-strung teeth-grinding years. Now that I've found Oxygen massage, I can't imagine going anywhere else. -

For the past 15+ years, I have been receiving massages to treat chronic lower back pain as a result of spinal fusion. After exploring several different modalities, regular massage has always offered the best results, although the relief has never been complete or last longer than a day at most. I can honestly say that the massage I received from Adam was, by far, the BEST massage I have ever experienced. Not only did his deep tissue work and stretching completely relieve the pain I experience, but the results are long-lasting and my mobility, flexibility and core strength are better than they have been in years. AT LAST!!
What can I say... I'm hooked. -

As someone who has sufferred from chronic, recurring back pain and weakness since I was a teenager, I cannot say enough about how skilled, conscious, professional, thoughtful, purposeful and healing my experience with Oxygen massage has been. I have a moderate to severe scoliotic "S" curve in my back, coupled with a disc herniation in the L5S1 region of my sacrum. Adam Gordon's conscientious effort to work with the constant lowgrade pain caused by the state of torque in my muscular skeletal system has opened up a new area of treatment that I will forever be grateful to him for. By the way, he has the hands of a god!
If you are looking to get back into your body due to an injury or trauma, this is the place to come. If you are looking for some much needed stress relief from everyday demands of life, work, and even too much play, these are the practicioners who can help you. If you just need to treat your body and soul to some much needed coddling, healing, and comfort, do not miss Oxygen Massage.
Can you tell I am a happy customer?
The online booking service is a serious plus too. And the studio (22nd at Guerrero) is a lovely haven completely conducive to relaxing and letting go. Adam has great taste in music too.

I suffer from chronic neck/back pain and massage therapy has been an integrated part of my 15 years of managing my symptoms. Adam at Oxygen Massage is an amazing therapist who has a very developed understanding about the musculoskeletal structure of the body. He knew right away the areas of my body that are misaligned without my having to point them out, and after an hour of real body work, he had me feeling my best.
Oxygen Massage is real therapy, not fluffy spa crap. For anyone suffering from unfortunate chronic pain, I highly recommend you give Adam a try. -

I recently moved here from Chicago and after two months of moving boxes my body was badly in need of a massage. I booked with Jan as his experience (massage therapist and assistant teacher) seemed to be a good combination of knowledge for deep tissue. The space is super professional, simple and clean. After the 90 minutes I walked away truly feeling as if Jan took care and paid special attention to each muscle in my body. Almost a week later, I feel as if my body is still relaxed after having one of the best deep tissue massages of my life. I'm hooked on Oxygen and cannot wait to schedule my next appointment!

I had a life-changing massage today.
First of all, Oxygen Massage Therapy's building is super cute. An older Victorian transformed into a massage parlor and wellness center? A+ job on that one guys.
I had read all these raves on Yelp and decided to get a massage to see if it would help the chronic neck/upper back pain I have from sitting at a computer 8 hrs a day. Now I know why everyone gave it 5 stars.
I made an appointment online (so fast and easy - they even send you a "reminder" before your appointment). Mandie was amazing - super friendly, made me feel comfortable and relaxed. She listened to my neck/back issue problem and came up with a tailored massage to help. She even showed me some exercises to try at home so that I reduce the tension from sitting all day!
One hour of deep tissue, pressure point massage therapy and I'm hooked.Listed in: Mind and body

It's been pretty quiet at work today, so I thought I'd take the time to write a review for Adam.
He's good. I've had a fair bit of back trouble, and I've seen a fair few people here in SF, and I'm more than happy to recommend Adam, for the simple reason that he's very very good at massage. In fact, so far he's the stand out best. He's an ex-Google masseuse, which might mean he's in the same league of masseuses as ex-SEALs are in the league of... well, whatever SEALs do. Honk alot and get clubbed apparantly (thanks google!) - it's a funny line of defense you yanks have, but there you are.
So! I digress - if you need a good massage, go see Adam, or (and I haven't seen her, but she went to the same school as him, so...) Eugene, who also works here.
He' s thorough, open, honest, friendly, and (let's face it, this should be the reason you'd see him) good at massage. -

I have been seeing Emily for well over six months now on a semi-regular basis. She continues to amaze me with her ability to help me relax and release all of the stress-induced knots riddling my sad body. She is an amazing listener and has helped me be more in tune with my body. She also knows all of my body's stress collections so well that she picks up on sore spots before I even tell her about them. Someone gave her a review and called her a "healer" - I agree completely. I do recommend a 90 minute session for full effect - 60 is wonderful but 90 really helps you to unwind.
The facility may not have that "spa" feeling - it is more like a super clean and comfortable friend's house which, for me, adds to the relaxation rather than taking away from it. Parking isn't so bad - look on the small streets west of Guerrero. The front room can have some ambient noise from outside but just ask to have the music a little louder or even a fan for some white noise.
5+++++ stars to Emily. She's the best!
UPDATE: Emily Huffman is, without a doubt, one of the best at body work I have ever had the pleasure of working with! I continue to see her on a regular basis and never cease to be amazed by the wonders she can work. Best of all, I feel 110% comfortable at all times.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Adam is hands-down the best massage therapist in the city. I've tried numerous therapists (back and shoulder knots and tightness from computer use), and no one has the professionalism and skill that Adam possesses. He seems to know exactly where your problem/pain originates from and fixes it. I don't know how he does it, but compared with many of the other therapists I've tried (sports massage, thai massage, deep tissue), he is by far and away the best at what he does.

EMILY ROCKS!!!!! Before the boyfriend took me to a amazing dinner at La Traviata he surprised me with a scheduled massage with Emily. Her and I consulted about my aches and pains and where she suggested we'd work toward in that session. She respected that this was MY TIME to relax and didn't go into superficial conversaton. I went into an hour peace. I believe she had my best intentions in mind.
She gave me an AMAZING massage all over-but really concentrated on relieving my upper back from months of pain. I went in feeling like I was on the brink of major carpel tunnel-but she worked me so' good the blood was flowing in places it hadn't for months!!
A massage at the Clairemont hotel $275 with someone talking to you the whole time! HERE: more than affordable rates and WAY BETTER SERVICE.
This is beyond a treat, a necessity. That it why I plan to go back in the future. -

The phrase "massage therapy" does not do justice to the sessions I have had with Adam Gordon. These are like no other massage that I have ever had -- he's the MUSCLE WHISPERER. I swear, he's somehow communicating with my body in a way that I've never experienced with any other massage therapist.
I was diagnosed with pretty severe scoliosis (52 degrees off center) when I was in junior high school. I wore a back brace for the next 3 years -- right out of one of those Judy Blume novels. When that didn't work, the doctor suggested massive spinal surgery, and with that, my mom (in her infinite wisdom and non-Western sensibilities) removed me from that doctor's care. I've never had really bad back pain - even through two pregnancies, one of which was a twin pregnancy, but I've always had the nagging suspicion that my body could be better.
Using my scoliosis as an excuse, I've had massages regularly (best of times, once a week) and throughout the world (Indonesia, Thailand, cruises, and many places here in the bay area). Nothing compares.
I'm committed. Once a week. Almost everything on my schedule is secondary. I highly highly recommend Oxygen Massage. -

I rarely get massages but when I do I am usually disappointed because I expect more for the 100$ or more I am paying. When my friend told me she tried 10-20 different places in the city and that Oxygen was her favorite, I had to try it. She told me Adam and Emily are great.
She was right. Emily took good care of my painful trap and rhomboid with the perfect amount of chatter. I had a deep tissue massage but she somehow integrated the emotional release / relaxation response that you get from other types of massage. Now that is worth the bucks.
The web page is perfect...informative and easy to schedule appointments. Even better is that they offer appointments after 7pm. The building is not well marked as I had to check 3 times that I had the right address, but it actually added to the experience. Makes you realize it doesn't need to be a fancy spa to get a good experience! Thanks Emily. I will recommend you to my patients.Listed in: Health

Geeking out on a PC and denying myself yoga
has left me with many sore mornings and muscles..
Fortunately, there are the healing hands of Adam,
who has on more than one occasion, made my tense shoulders,
soft silk.
His deep massaging techniques are invaluable!
Thanks Adam ;)
