This is now ROXBURY MARKET. Former Fireside & The Farms Markets master butcher/owner Victor Manes has opened his own operation.
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!
Roxbury Market is great place to shop, offering nothing but the finest of gourmet meats, fresh seafood, full service deli, specialty cheeses, fresh & organic produce, full line grocery, select coffee, fine wines & spirits, and home delivery. -

If I lived in this area, this would be my market of choice!
We were on our way to the Museum of Tolerance...and of course it is lunch time... Saw Owen's Market across the ways and yelped it. 4-stars. Hmmmm, let's check it out.
Went in and already I had a good feeling. We went on to the deli section to see what they have. Wow, they had a nice selection. So we got sandwiches for lunch. Made to order, deli sandwiches. (Oh and we beat the lunch time rush - impeccable timing!)
Hubbie had the Jojo- Roast beef, sharp cheddar, onions, horse radish, on sourdough. It was good and the meat really tasted fresh. And a side of fancy potato salad
I shared a sandwich with my mom-in-law - the Joshie. Yummy Italian cold cuts, provolone, italian dressing, tomato, pickles and onions, on a crispy French roll. That was just perfect. And a side of cole slaw.
I had a really good soda too. A bottle of Lorina Sparkling Blood Orange - Premium French soda. It was so cool and refreshing. I want to try to find this online to purchase large quantities!
The market is so cute. And not just your local neighborhood convenient store. (I don't want to overuse this word but, this market is so quaint) They carry a nice selection of foods, like Stella D'Oro cookies, cheeses, jams...the fancy gourmet stuff.
Don't know when I will be around this neighborhood, but I hope it won't be too long. -

I was on Pico looking for a place to eat when I came across a sign for Owen's Market advertising sandwiches. I decided to head in and give it a shot. I headed strait to the deli and browsed the menu for a sandwich that sounded tasty. I decided upon the Joshie, which is a sandwich made up of various Italian meats and other garnishments. The sandwich also came with a small side order, for which I chose Potato salad. For the 8 something dollars that I paid for the sandwich and side, it was not a lot of food. Both the sandwich and potato salad were okay, but nothing that I would go out of my way to have again. There a lot of better options for a quick meal than the sandwiches at Owen's, so I will probably not be visiting them again.

Apparently time either changes things... or impairs my memory... or both.
In a rush to pick up a few last minute groceries and avoid the heinousness that is otherwise known as the Ralph's checkout line on the weekend, I attempted accomplishing my food mission with a quick stop at Owen's.
I seemed to remember their small market consisting of general grocery items along with a few specialty goods, a meat counter, and a pretty sweet liquid refreshment selection. So I figured even if I couldn't find 100% of my checklist, I could at least get part of it and maybe even find a neat little goodie or two. Not to mention their new little weekend bbqs had me thinkin' hey, at least they're trying to do something unique - gotta support a valid effort, right?
W.R.O.N.G.
See, here's the thing, Owen's. BBQ's are cool. Unique little candies and wedding knick knacks and a good wine bottle or two are cool too. And I might even forgive the fact that I found only like 15% of my needed items (even though they consisted of yellow cake mix, chocolate frosting, unsweetened soy milk, and I dunno, a decoration or two?).
But then I settled for regular old fat free milk, went home, and used 8 whole ounces of it for a smoothie. Then, the next day, woke up, prepared my ingredients for another smoothie, and smelled something kinda rancid. And then realized it was my MILK. My brand. New. Stinkin. Milk.
Naturally, I take a glance at the expiration date - and notice it was FOUR DAYS AGO. Like, I had bought the milk already three days expired! No, no curdles or anything, but that milk was definitely kickin' some mean stank and I shudder to think in what state I actually drank it the day before, out of the freshly opened carton.
Of course, to be fair, perhaps it was my fault for not checking the date before purchasing, or not smelling the milk completely before drinking, but really - is that needed? Is there that little turnover on fresh food products? Even the bananas looked a little brown....
Honestly, I really didn't understand the need for Owen's the first time I visited, but I thought what the heck - support cute, unique, small local businesses. And I tried. But as much as I hate to do it, I'm totally crying over spoiled milk.Listed in: LA Grocery Stores, Party Party Party

Until yesterday, I had never before noticed Owen's Market. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
I was attracted by their outside barbecue, taking place right out in front of the store, on Pico.
It turned out to be one of those unexpected sweet experiences, happenstance.
I had been roaming Cheviot Hills Park with my camera, where the aroma of Memorial Day weekend cookouts filled the early summer air. By the time I left the park, visions of hot dogs & cheeseburgers danced in my head.
I proceeded to photo businesses along Pico, until I reached the intersection where Wiesenthal Center is located. Directly across the street is Owen's Market. And, under a red umbrella, there was a man cooking up tri-tip, burgers, and hot dogs. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Inside, the store is charming. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
There's a fairly large produce section, http://www.yelp.com/bi...
a big meat counter, liquor, even fresh baked goods. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Neighborhood groceries like this one are where everyone shopped before the days of big supermarkets. And I think this is better. The employees know their customers at Owen's, and customers know each other. People were chatting in the aisles. I was greeted warmly when I went inside to inquire about the Bar-B-Q.
Thanks to Suzanne S. for her previous review that details the history of Owen's Market. It's been around for some 50+ years, so it's a local landmark. No wonder it oozes local flavor, both inside and out. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
I arrived just in time, before 3pm when the cookout ended. One big, juicy hot dog remained on the grill, amidst some burgers & tri-tip. The group ahead of me took all the burgers, then the next couple in line took the tri-tip. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
But that dog was for me, baby.
My hot dog combo plate included a choice of drink from the huge cold case, and potato salad, all for $5.50. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
I snagged a little table next to the parking lot & enjoyed one of the best dogs I ever ate.
Five stars for tradition & sweet surprises.

In and around Roxbury Park, successful facelifts are a given and surgeon recommendations are whispered quietly among trusted friends. In that same neck of the woods sits Owen's Market ... it has been perched on the corner of Pico and Roxbury since 1957. The old-school Owen's was often a pit-stop on my way home from work. If I was too tired or hurried to hit Gelson's or Ralph's, I could swing in and out of this little shop like a bunny. It's tiny, there's easy-access parking, the service was friendly, and they had a pretty decent selection of things you might find yourself in need of in a pinch (you know ... like chocolate chip cookies for dinner after being mistreated by a client earlier in the day). You can't imagine my sadness a few months ago when I saw that they were closed. I mourned what I thought to be their passing.
Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes ... or a well-heeled Beverly Hills icon returning from her stay at Shanteque or Prive ... Owen's Market is back and better than ever. For that we can all hail celebrity event planner Mindy Weiss! Mindy is a celebrity herself in some respects, having planned large-scale celebrations and events for folks like Nick & Jess, Eva & Tony, and Heidi & Seal. She's a sought-after expert in high-end event planning and execution. I've read that Mindy, a native of nearby Cheviot Hills, shopped in the store as a kiddo and wanted to take on the task of giving it an upgrade so that locals could shop there for years to come.
Owen's Market is now fresh and fabulous looking on the inside and outside, with the same friendly service, and a large selection of gourmet goodies. Now, in addition to my chocolate chip cookies, they have the caliber of items you'd expect from Bristol Farms ... high-end baked goods, prepared food (the sushi looked amazing and in true West LA fabulousness ... was in adorable packaging), yummy fresh fruits and vegetables, an amazing selection of meats, and for you lushies ... a good selection of spirits and wines. They also have your general household products and more than a few lovely little gift items ... perfect if you're running to dinner at a friend's house and want to bring something for your hostess. The best news yet, for folks like me who live nearby, is that they still deliver and are gearing up for online ordering. It's Pink Dot with class!
Well done, Dr. Weiss ... it looks like Owen's Market is the latest successful facelift this side of Roxbury Park! -

They have $15 pasta here. That's the kind of market it is.
Working a block away from Owen's, in an area otherwise desolate of eating establishments (not counting the obligatory Trimana) Owen's has been a godsend, with their gourmet sandwiches and best of all TACO TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS. I'm fairly certain our office alone accounts for 72% of their income, and the Thursday's have been a welcome addition. Yes, I can eat tacos 2 out of 7 days every week.
The people working here are always really friendly and once in awhile will throw in a free something or other (soda, banana, candy, etc.). I like it. Not pretentious. Even WITH $15 pasta. And I can't wait till Tuesday... -

Owen's Market is like a pair of Roger Vivier shoes - expensive, cute, understated & worth it. I'm not sure who the intended audience is since it's in an odd location (across the parking lot from a gas station surrounded by businesses), but it's a cute little store that deserves a visit for it's unique goods like the delicious juice made from Chardonnay & Merlot grapes I picked up to take back to my hotel. If you do stop in, pick up some of those vanilla cupcakes they carry. I wish I could remember who they said the purveyor of their cupcakes are, but "yumm" must be their middle name... 'cause damn, those are some good cupcakes.

Uninspired. I expected this place to be much more pleasing aesthetically and have a better selection (not necessarily bigger) of gourmet goods and gifts. Meh.

I love this place. They are friendly and have great meats. I just ordered my 24 pound turkey (for the 6th year in a row) and an awesome 10 pound ham that I will be making for family and friends this weekend. Make sure when you order the turkey, you ask them to season it! It tastes so good that way. Turkey is free range and the price reflects that, $2.69 a pound but it is so worth it.

This place is the best in the area to grab something quick and delicious for lunch. I've been eating at a horrible place down the street and finally went in to Owen's. It was like heaven. Great unique groceries and food; super friendly people! It's an awesome little market!

I love this market. Everyone is really friendly and helpful, and it feels like an old style neighborhood market. It has all the flair and style of a vintage fruit stand, and yet has some of the most chic items around. Food, and great party and holiday ideas....I always go there around the holidays. So cute.

Ok, so here's the deal. Owens isn't my neighborhood corner market. As a matter of fact, it's not even that close to me. But my wife found out that they are one of the few places that are supposed to be carrying the "Let's be Frank" brand of hot dog (http://www.letsbefrank...). So being Summer, and of course BBQ season, we decide to go a little out of our way to try these things.
Before driving 20 min's out of our way, we call ahead:
"Hi, I heard you carry the Let's Be Frank Hot Dogs" my wife asks.
"What's that?" he replies.
"These free range organically fed beef hot dogs that you are supposedly carrying" she explains.
"Oh no, but we have other hot dogs like that" he states.
"And they're Organic / free range" she questions.
"Yes" he confirms.
So we do the drive (20 min out of our way, have I mentioned that?) and low and behold, they don't have anything like that. As a matter of fact, the butcher on hand tries to tell me that all beef is pen raised to "fatten them up."
Wrong!
How hard is it that if you don't' know something, be a responsible adult and say so. Don't lie. And if your employees don't know the difference between items you sell, it's your job as proprietor to make sure they are educated on the differences. -

No, it doesn't have a huge selection, yes some things are overpriced, yes it's a little neighborhood joint that in some ways isn't as "professional" as a mega-chain. But simply because it's a neighborhood market with personal, friendly service, and a FINE selection of grocery products...it deserves 5 stars. Just for that. Thank you for standing up to our homogenized world, Owen's.

I remember how the old Owen's Market used to be... It used to be like what Dave Chappelle calls, bodegas, in the movie "Half Baked". Now Owen's Market is a great place for a sandwich! Now they have Taco Tuesday/Thursday and a Espresso bar too. The people there are great and I do enjoy going there once in a while because it is pricey.
