I just love this salon.

1.  Richard is an amazing stylist.  He never pushes me to do too much to my hair and he actually has opinions on what to do.  Plus he is always right.  He does stylish but timeless cuts that meet my needs.

2.  Kathy is the best waxer in the city!  Love her work.

Not bad at all. I have worked in the area before and never noticed this little gem hidden away on a side street (with free parking too!). The receptionist was really sweet, and forgiving when I had to ask to borrow their computer to show them the cut I wanted since I had forgotten to bring the pictures.
I was a little let down by my shampoo. I am used to some kind of scrubbing/massaging but maybe I got the "new girl" since she barely washed my hair... Everything else was great though. Kaitlin cut my hair, she was very informative on ways to make my hair work for me, and a great conversationalist. I also had my eyebrows waxed (using the hard wax) and it is the first time I wasn't red as a tomato afterward. Awesome!
The environment was stylish, yet welcoming. I enjoyed the mood music in the background too. It is the little details that count, and Ovations knows this. I plan on going back, and am even considering gift cards as Christmas presents...

Ok, maybe it's just me. Based on other reviews it clearly is, JUST me who's dissatisfied post Ovations. Granted my hair is curly and takes a certain type of concentration to cut. It's not hard though, you just gotta be thorough. I've been maimed and butchered by many an expensive fancy salon its par for the course. But this place may have been the last straw. So much so that I felt compelled to Yelp.

Not only was my haircut bad, but I also hated the staff of this salon. I guess I don't look like their typical/average customer. I walked in wearin cargos all sweaty from walking in the heat and a bit sloppy. I'm not a size 2. I don't make a point of looking nice when I go to the salon. I needed a haircut badly ergo my hair was a hot mess. Still, no need for wide eyed stares from the cookie cutter trying-way-too-hard-to-be-edgy girls with generic bobs that work there. Owner was nice & polite though and seemed to listen to what I wanted but then ended up chopping my bangs off way too short b/c when I say I like to wear my curls with bangs I must be speaking ancient aramaic right? Bangs are for stick straight fake blond choppy bob bitches that give you bewildered nasty looks when you walk into their salon.

Basically i walked around with a huge round poodle puff for the rest of the summer and am now watching my hair grow out in the most horrific uneven way one could imagine even though Richard bragged about how fabulous it's gonna be growin out based on his incredible skill with curly hair. Pppshaw. Shoulda gone to the Beehive in Fairmount.

So yesterday I took advantage of the "Hawt on Yelp" promo and got my hair cut at Ovations. I arrived early (headed over early, really, thanks to my desire to be on time coupled with the wonderful SEPTA strike, ahem). There is free parking around the salon, though you may have to do a lap to find a spot--I got one fairly easily. Inside, the salon is clean, minimalistic, and calming. I was offered a coffee or water and my coat was taken. Within seconds, Lauren, my stylist, shook my hand and led me over to her station. Now, I USED to be an adventurer of hairstyles...blond, red, black, short, etc.....but recently I have become a purist. I started growing out all of my colored hair about 2 years ago--and I stopped cutting it....and it showed. I had several inches of different colored, damaged, breaking hair at the bottom of a long, healthy head of virgin hair! Lauren was extremely understanding of my scissor phobia, promised to only get rid of what HAD to come off, and listened to everything I liked/disliked.

She washed and cut my hair quickly and expertly, and was a complete pleasure to talk to, there was never a lull in conversation! It felt like I had gone to her for years. In the end, I still have my length, my hair looks healthy and feels like silk, and I feel awesome. The blowout still looks great today, even after being in a shower cap this morning. My layers have made my hair move so nicely, I can't stop tossing them around!

If you have time to get in on this Hawt on Yelp thing, do it. All the stylists were ultra-friendly, and it seemed like you can't go wrong. $25 was a STEAL. And Lauren was fantastic. I had a spring in my step all day that made me wonder how I ever went 2 years without this!!!!! Even if the promo is over, I highly recommend this salon.

Me and my roommate Dave struck up a conversation with Jay, who is a server at Swanky Bubbles and a hair stylist at Ovation.  After Swanky Bubbles closed down, Jay, who is always ready for the spontaneous hair cut, offered to give Dave a legitimate philly doo in our apartment right next door.  He spent over an hour on Dave and gave him a firstclass hair cut at 3am in the morning.  After witnessing his work first hand, next time I need a haircut, I'm definitely going to go to Jay at Ovations and suggest you do the same.

I got my first Brazilian done here, and it was a surprisingly pleasant experience. The skin care specialist was really nice and kept talking to me the whole time to keep my mind off the hot wax.
Jay is the best hairstylist there. I have let some other people at Ovations mess with my hair and regretted it, but Jay always does a nice job, plus he's really funny. He does my mom's hair, too. My favorite salon in Philly-- nice people, reasonable prices, and high quality hair care (once you've picked the right stylist).

The search for a hair stylist when you move to a new city is a challenge. As black woman with naturally curly hair, this is even more of a challenge. I rarely find people who know how to cut my hair, are comfortable working with it, or don't push me to get a perm since I have so much hair. So based on maia's yelp review I decided to check it out.

I made an appointment with Jen, and she was amazing! Well, everyone was great in the shop. They were super friendly, the space is very nice, and everyone was so attentive. Jen was really informed about cutting hair, and when I told her what I needed she walked me through what she was going to do. She also did not hesitate to get all up in my hair (which I have found some other stylists tended to do). She used great products, gave me some styling tips and an adorable style. I will definitely go back to her.

It was uber affordable too, just $50. And they give you wine! Hooray!

As a dude, I never really thought I'd end up going to a salon to get a haircut. But once I tried Ovations, I never looked back. Ask for Jay. He's awesome and can help you figure out a haircut that really pops.

Okay, so it is a trek from Center City but you won't be disappointed (especially with the free street parking!).

On the day of my appointment I was beginning my hunt for best Philly waxer. The first floor is dedicated to a modern hair salon, while the upstairs is the spa. I waiting upstairs and was pleasantly surprised with the scope an professionalism of the spa's offerings: a waiting area with fireplace and tea and coffee bar.

If you are hear for the dreading bikini wax, get an appointment with Kathy; she is the reason this place gets five stars. She is gentle, kind and has a few tricks up her sleeve that will make the process more painless than you expected. (Unfortunately, she let me know she'd rather I not share her secret). This is the one of two places I will ever get a bikini wax. I suggest you do the same.

i am an extreme skeptic about salons.  over the years, i've had an incredible amount of trouble finding someone who can cut my hair.  i'm black, and i wear my hair naturally curly.  people usually want to straighten my hair and then give me a style for straight hair (NO), or they have no idea how to cut "black hair".  ovations was recommended by a colleague with naturally curly hair.  my colleague got her hair done at ovations for her wedding.  my stylist jen was INCREDIBLE.  she is personable, bright, and thorough.  she takes feedback and is willing to go back and fix things that may not be quite right.

as for the staff in general, they are all extremely warm and welcoming.  in the mornings you will be offered tea or coffee.  in the afternoons you will be offered red or white wine.  people made conversation with me even after my bill was paid.

the last time i visited ovations, there was a rain storm.  the owners made sure to ask everyone who was leaving whether they remembered their umbrellas.  one woman was stranded with no umbrella and a far distance to get home.  another stylist whose shift was over offered to take her where she wanted to go.  a business where customers are treated like people?!  mind blowing.

i haven't even been upstairs to see the spa yet...and i can't wait!

New to the neighborhood and after a falling out with my previous hair stylist (sigh), I figured I'd pull myself together and get back out there and find me a something new!  I have soft, never dyed, black curly hair that I torture straight most days (in the summer it's forced into a ponytail), but I love to have a nice cut for when I do take the time to look pretty.  Okay, okay, I'll admit that I was a bit of a tomboy growing up BUT just because I got my hairs cut by my mom's friend in a Northeast Philly basement until I was ummm 20 years old doesn't mean I don't deserve a good, positive hair future!!!  With that said, I felt totally comfortable as soon as I walked into Ovations.  Richard (who I believe to be the owner) sat me down, checked out my hair, I told him some history, he asked me if I wanted a glass of water, and then I was gentled guided into the hair washing area.  The place inside is stunning, the people are unbelievably nice and Richard kicked ass, gave me a stellar trim and an awesome blow out that lasted for almost 2 hazy hot and humid days!  And since I was a first timer and a new customer, my first shampoo/cut/blowout cost only $30!  You might as well try it!  The location and the offer brought me in but the experience made me a future client.  Check out the website and see what they have!  I'm glad I did.
