We chose this place because it was conveniently located for our travel plans, and the fact that it had an outdoor BBQ area, picnic tables (3 of each), and an outside dual head shower (OK, I'm cheap and outdoorsy- but clean).

The vibe is cool California with free fruits and vegetables offered outside the front desk (offer yours to share), koi pond, Buddhist prayer flags and- my fave- the management posts a notice that says the housekeepers make minimum wage so TIP them.  Social responsibility is always right on.  Parking is pretty tight.

Rooms are unique and ours was very clean and the staff friendly and helpful.  If you feel you're extra special and others can suck eggs, go somewhere else.  If you have a brain and a HEART, I think you'll have a groovy experience.

First off, if you are going to stay here be sure to look at their rooms online because each one is different.  I thought this place was a really cute and quaint old motel/motorlodge.

We travel with our dogs so we were glad they are dog friendly.  They give a "doggie" welcome gift and extra doggy blankets.  The room we stayed in was pretty tiny for two people and two dogs (our dogs arent' small).  Because of that, it wasn't that comfortable, a little cramped and annoying at times!  LOL  We're the wierdos for always having our dogs with us!

I'd stay here again, but leave the mutts at home, maybe (-:

We stayed here ONCE and will never return.  The staff we dealt with was pretentious and unhelpful.  We are just a regular family and apparently not hip and cool like the clientele (bicyclists and outdoorsey people) they prefer.

Our room was okay but the kitchen faucet wasn't working and when we reported it the staff rolled their eyes.  No apology.  They took several hours before they sent someone to fix it.

When I phoned to make our reservation and asked politely if they had an AAA discount the staffer said curtly, "We are already moderately priced."
Hey lady I'm just asking.  I should have taken it as a sign.

Maybe the staff has worked on their attitude but we won't take the chance on returning.

Thankfully we've found other places in NC to stay at.

I love this place, I have stayed here numerous times in the past. It is reasonably priced, very dog friendly. They even provide your dog with treats!

A charming little hotel and each room has a whimsical theme. There is a very nice grassy area and a small creek with waterfall. You can hear the creek from several of the rooms.

Close enough to town that you can easily walk, however far enough away that you don't get the noise or the traffic.

And it is Romantic! For Romance I recommend the cabin..it is tucked away from the other rooms, with it's own private deck, hot tub, kitchen and romantic fireplace. Take a bottle of good wine, some good dark chocolate and your favorite sweetie!

This place was great! Reasonably priced and thankfully NOT a bed-and-breakfast, the Outside Inn is clean, inexpensive, and friendly... oh yeah, and dog-friendly!

The central grassy area is a good place to relax or get to know your temporary neighbors, and there's a cute sitting area in the back, next to a small creek with waterfall. Location-wise, the motel is far enough from downtown to be super-quiet, but close enough to be easily walkable. We liked walking around and looking at the nearby (overpriced) Victorians for sale.

Each Outside Inn room has a theme, and we drew the "Historical Room," which has some old maps and photos of Grass Valley, as well as a patchwork quilt on the main bed. Country is not our style, but it was fine here... the walls are wood, and nothing is covered in lace or samplers. (Ha ha.) Some of the rooms have kitchenettes; ours had a small second bedroom (with a twin) instead... something to keep in mind if you're traveling with a kid. We used it for our suitcases, etc.

Why four stars?

It's definitely not fancy. This is most evident in the bathroom, where the shower is one of those pop-into-place kits. (Everything was very clean, however!) So reconsider if you're into creature comforts... you might want to bring your own soap and shampoo rather than use the free Pure n' Natural and Breck the motel provides.

The wireless internet connection never worked, so we had to borrow a hard-connection kit from the office. That was fine, I guess... but it limited where we could put the laptop (close to the one telephone port and electrical outlet) so we couldn't lounge on the bed while checking out local attractions.

The local attractions guide in the room wasn't very good... I learned more by asking office staff and locals about what to do. And they are all friendly, so that's an easy thing.

If I'm in the area again, staying here seems a no-brainer.

Not exactly what I thought it would be.  I lived in Nevada City for years and always noticed this place and thought it was cute.  Now that I live in SF, had the opportunity to stay here.  Rooms really are old fashioned motel rooms and pretty bare bones.  Bathrooms barely adequate - I decided to forgo a shower b/c it was just too small and cramped.

Front desk person inexplicably seemed more enthused about helping some idiotic (non-paying customer) couple that was lost than checking us in.  (they were musicians that said that they were looking for a club called "The Basement."  front desk person ((hereinafter "FDP")) googled the club and came up empty.  lost idiotic couple then confessed that it wasn't really a club, but just someone's basement, but they didn't know whose or where it was at, only that they thought it was in Nevada City.  They were distraught that they were going to be late.  Ummm, Earth to idiotic traveling musician couple... buy a clue!  Maybe you might have wanted to get the # and/or address of the dude that wanted you to come play in his basement before you drove up to Nevada City from SF.  Just a thought!  At any rate, we were forced to wait to check in while said idiots and FDP wondered "hmm, I wonder whose basement it could be?" for like 15 minutes).

FDP said we should just park in front of our room.  Well, somebody else already parked there.  So, I parked as close as I could without parking in front of anyone else's room, and we got out.  Immediately, some freak show ass wipe started having a shit hemorrhage that we were parked facing the wrong way.  (Turns out this was the same fuckwad that parked in front of our room).  Had to use every fiber of my willpower to refrain from punching his teeth down his loser ass throat.  All in all, not the best way to start the weekend getaway.

One star for the small creekside picnic area that is great for coffee in the morning.

Also kudos for reminding me of all the pretentious shit that I hate about Nevada City and why I don't want to live there anymore.

This place is really cute!  We stayed in the Rock Climbing Suite, which is a good-sized end unit with patio, fully-stocked kitchenette, wi-fi and a surprisingly big bathroom.  The grounds are well maintained and very peaceful.  Out front, there is a fruit and veggie stand where neighbors can leave goodies from their garden free for the taking!  It's just a short walk to downtown and the staff is very friendly.

This is a small, hard-to-find motel.  It is moderately-priced, and loaded with character (insofar as a motel can have character).  The Outside Inn has only a small number of units, so book in advance.  It is located a short walk from "downtown" Nevada City.  It was built early in the 20th century on what used to be the main highway.  Its neighborhood is now entirely residential.  If you just want a cheap & simple place to spend the night, rather than a fancy bed-and-breakfast, I recommend the Outside Inn.

The Outside Inn certainly looks cute, with its themed rooms. The cabin in downtown Nevada City is lovely and in a great location. But the attitude of the staff is very rude. This ruined our experience. They don't seem to have any idea how to provide service to guests coming up there for a nice getaway.

You had better be out of your room by 10 or 11 a.m. for the day, or you will be told gruffly, possibly with outright cursing, that you will not get any cleaning service in your room that day. The owner doesn't seem to think there is anything wrong about that.
