14 reviews for Outrigger Waipouli Beach Resort and Spa
This place was great. We had a 2 bd 3 ba 1450 sq ft condo with a partial ocean view and full pool view. We had us ( the parents) and my parents (60 yo and 57 yo) and my kids (9 yo and 8 yo) all in the place and had more than enough room. The kitchen is to die for. We never made a "full" dinner in but made "kid food" and snacks most days. We ate breakfast in everyday. The Safeway is right across the street. It is very convenient. It is also conveniently located on the island. Getting to the North,South or West was easy.
The service was on the medium side. I am still waiting for my sweater and phone charger to be sent to me. The battery one the key on the door died as we were checking out. My sweater and charger were left in the condo. They found the charger but not my brand new white sweater. I am waiting...
This is not a full service hotel. There is no room service. The bar was serving lunch at the pool but I had to go to the bar to order it. They did bring it to me. They have such low staff due to me and 5 other ppl were the only ones there.
We got such a great deal on the condo I really should give it five stars but I am just not going to.
Look, this place is 5 stars all the way.
All the rooms are beautifully appointed top to bottom and are pimped out with all the latest and greatest toys you could want in a luxury resort. There were more freaking plasmas in our room than there were guests for crying out loud. All the rooms were huge - each one is a large suite with nice views (many of them oceanfront or partial oceanfront). Sub-zero fridges, wolf ranges, granite everywhere round out the plush amenities. Cooking at home isn't such a bad idea either since most restaurants in Kapaa aren't mindblowingly awesome and most are expensive.
No, this isn't a full-service hotel in the traditional sense; a lot of these residences are home/vacation homes for people living here full time. I would say though the only real thing they're lacking is room service, but there's a decent bar/restaurant on-site and cmon! You're in hawaii! Get out!
The pool is astounding. A winding warmed salt water pool with 3 sand bottomed jacuzzi. Good for kids and adults.
This is a great base camp for you as well since it's centrally located in Kapaa....so if you want to go up north to Hanalei, Princeville or the Kalalau trail, but also want to go to someplace like Poipu or Waimeia down south, this is a good fit for you.
Loved it!

Got a great deal (by booking months in advance) on this property, which is ideally located in Kapa'a on the east shore of the island of Kauai. This was a great location on the island from which to get anywhere (okay, Waimea Canyon was a bit far).
In the middle of the property (a "condominium resort", so it's a combination of residences/second homes and hotel rooms) is a saltwater lagoon that meanders about, with two slides, three jacuzzis, and a kiddie pool. The kiddie pool and the jacuzzis are filled with heavy river rocks, which give a very cool sensation to wade your feet in. There's also a giant koi pond (separate from the lagoon) and an immaculately manicured garden-scape.
We got upgraded to a suite on the top (fourth) floor, and it was unbelievable. Probably 1000 square feet, three balconies, huge bathrooms, comfy beds. Every touch of was perfect, from the sub-zero fridge and convection oven (Hey, eating out in Hawai'i every day can get expensive, and there's a Safeway right across the street!) to the travertine-tiled bathrooms. Our room even had a partial ocean view.
The staff was incredibly nice (especially Jay at the front desk and 'Ish, who tends the lagoon area), full of the warm aloha spirit that makes the Hawaiian islands so relaxing.
There's a restaurant/bar on the property (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) which was good to visit one evening, but I wouldn't recommend it for more than one meal, as there are lots of good places on the island to make plate.
All in all staying at this Outrigger made my short trip to Kauai that much more memorable!

I will start by saying the only reason this won't be a 5-star rating is because this is not a full-service hotel and therefore you cannot get room-service and some of the other perks of a full-service hotel. So when you ask for something, pretty much anything at all, expect a dumb look on the receptionists face or an "I don't know". The employees are fairly useless (except the cleaning crews are great) but the property is amazing.
I assume we were upgraded for our honeymoon as we were supposed to have a King-sized 1BR apartment with a garden view. We ended up with a 2 BR, 3 Bathroom apartment with the garden view, which is essentially a garden and then the ocean --- so I would call it a partial ocean-view.
The room was basically brand new w/ marble everything. We had 3 balconies. There were two bathtubs, one big enough to fit 3 people if thats your thing. One thing that I disliked was there were no jets in the bathtubs. The pool is nice and there are two cool little slides for the kids (and for me). I liked how the pool "meanders" so you can take some chairs and find a nice quite nook to call your own.
The pool restaurant was great, but that will get its own review at some point. The lobby was really nice and parking was adequate. The light coming out of the hotel onto 56 takes a real long time to change and it can get a little traffic-y at that intersection at times. Aveda spa was fantastic ---- albeit pricey!
When we return to Kauai, we will be staying at the Outrigger again --- great for honeymooners who are just looking for a nice base-camp!

The location is excellent. It is across the street from a super market. It is near mermaid cafe and pono market. It was a nice central location for our trip activities.
I am someone who is highly concerned with cleanliness, and this place was clean and passed the test (though I would toss aside the decorative pillows). The room was enormous, well furnished, well kept, new, with nice amenities. For instance, there was a washer and dryer in the room, with laundry detergent provided! We got a great price for the room. Message me to ask how. We reserved a room through the management rather than an owner and had no issues, and received a box of chocolates as newlyweds.
See other reviwer's comments about the decor, location, and quality of the rooms. Amazing! After I leave, I think the two things that will stick in my head about this place is the great kitchen set up and the absolutely awful water. Oh my god! The water is terrible! It is worse than water out of LA or San Jose! The water tasted totally fishy. Other places on the island - even ones that weren't very far away - had water that tasted perfectly fine.
Also - see my review about the Tahitian Lanai Bar and Grill. It's the hotel bar and I have some SIGNIFICANT complaints that really affected my opinion of the hotel.
The reason I didn't give the place a full 5 stars? The restaurant. They advertise a swim-up bar. Not so. They have a series of grumpy waitresses who will take your order at a particular place at the pool. They also have an outdoor drink and shave-ice area that will make shave ice, but only if you purchase first at the bar and then walk back over and pick it up. Unfortunately, the staff there is extremely inefficient and unhelpful. The bar will run out of ice, close early, have unhelpful staff, and does not communicate with their higher-ups at the bar. The bar / restaurant will close for events, like weddings, and not allow hotel guests to purchase drinks or shave ice. Unfortunately, they do not bother telling their employees at the poolside shave-ice pick up area, leaving that place fully staffed, "open", but unable to take or place any orders. When we asked where we would go to pay for a shave ice so that the poolside area could make it for us, they told us - quote - "I don't know, I just work here."
The hotel does not have a manager on the weekend nor do they take any responsibility for the actions of the bar. Therefore, there is nobody to complain to about the crappy bar service. Shame on you, Outrigger! There are no signs posted anywhere which disassociate themselves from the bar yet they do not accept complaints about the complete lack of organization!
Five stars all the way. The suites are beautifully appointed with updated appliances and great furniture. We had the 2 Bedroom 3 Bath Royal Oceanfront and it was perfect for four adults. Two rooms on each side, each with a bathroom, with a common area in between.
When you're going to Kauai you want to check out where the hotel is in relation to the beach, because a lot of them seem to sit back aways. If beachfront is important to you this is a good place to stay. The South shore (Poipu) has a lot more hotels, and therefore a lot more tourists sharing a relatively small section of sandy beach, but Kapaa isn't as crowded, so the beaches tend to be wide open. Outrigger is right on the beach, and we didn't have any problem finding an open recliner any time of the day.
The lounge won't blow you away, but it was passable. We didn't care; we were there to chill and not be bothered, and that's what you'll find here. We will return.
Stayed here for the past 8 nights and had a mostly positive experience. If you are looking for a more full-service, amenity-filled resort, this is not the place for you. The finishings in the rooms are nice, with beautiful kitchens all done in stainless steel (and Wolf/Sub-Zero stuff - not just junky appliances with a strip of silver plastic on them), with everything you need to make meals at home and save money.
The pools are great, and definitely a more family-oriented approach, if you are into that (I'm not), and of the 3 jacuzzis, 1 of them doesn't work, and of the 2 that do, 1 is "all ages", so basically a toilet for screaming kids.
The biggest problem with this place is that it's basically a bunch of smaller, independent companies running every aspect of the business, so if something is wrong or needs to be dealt-with, good luck - nobody is accountable for anything and largely your frustrations will go unanswered.
For the most part, it's clean and a solid bargain for the area. We went to Kauai for a wedding at the Grand Hyatt in Poipu, and if you're looking for a damn fine place to stay, head over there as fast as you can. If you don't mind the family-oriented scene, and enjoy the idea of being able to save money by cooking meals in a luxurious kitchen with a great view of the ocean, this place is for you. I probably fall somewhere in the middle, but had a mostly enjoyable experience here.

A dream come true! Never did I think that this resort would be this awesome. The rooms are huge and immaculate. The kitchens have Subzero, Wolf, and Fisher & Paykel appliances and each unit has a full-size washer/dryer. The decor is breathtaking and makes the scenery outside pop. Dark wood crown molding in each room, huge bathroom and tub, and general feel of the room make for a really romantic setting. Each room has two lanai doors, and they open up all the way so you can smell the sweet, warm air. Our room looked out at the pool.
The pool area is amazing. A winding river-style pool with waterfalls and a little grotto, and semi-private cabanas make it seem so relaxing. There are 2 waterslides, too, which we took advantage of a lot! The Jacuzzis (three in total) are sand bottomed and it's a really neat experience, kind of like a hot spring. The grounds are landscape to perfection and the staff is friendly and accommodating.
The bar/restaurant just outside the pool area is amazing as well. Ocean breeze with my mai tai? Yes please!
The beach that the hotel is on is not ideal for swimming, but just 300 yards down its near perfection.
I would stay at this resort again in a heartbeat - it made out trip all the more special
Four and one-half stars.
Beautifully appointed 2 bedroom condo with high-end kitchen. 3 flat screen TVs. 2 1/2 baths. 2 tubs ( one tub that can fit two ) and 2 showers. Washer and dryer. This is the best place I've ever stayed at. It will be hard to beat. Even though our room faced the street it was quiet !
Nice winding pool with two slides. The beach wasn't the best but you can travel elsewhere.
The only drawback I had was with housekeeping. Due to the fact that I put my " Do Not Disturb" sign out frequently I had to contact the front desk to ensure they would come by. Even then, one time they missed our room. This was a minor thing considering.
Located right across the street from a shopping center. Great location. Hated the stoplight though. You have to wait forever to cross !
Very quiet resort.
Hated to leave, this place was fantastic. It has every amenity that anyone could possibly want : comfy beds, huge kitchen w/ sub zero fridge and the coolest stove i've ever seen, enormous bathroom , and flat screen t.v's in the living room and the bedrooms.
Right across the street, there is a small shopping center with a grocery store, drugstore, Starbucks, a couple of restaurants, a bagel place and various other sundry shops. Very handy.
This place was awesome. If you don't have kids I'd consider staying somewhere else. If you do have kids then no need to bother even looking elsewhere. The units are all really nice and offer a great value for what you get. We were there with a 2yr old and she had a total blast and I did watching her. It's centrally located but you're really not close to either the north or south end. With that said, it's a good home base if you have kids. I don't see why someone would pay double or triple the money and stay at a hotel resort when you can come here and have a kitchen and the washer/dryer. There are only two negatives I would mention about the place. 1. there are a lot of rooms that have a few of a parking lot. 2. I rented on vrbo from the owners of the unit. If you have a problem your issues will only be addressed as well as the owner will address it. so there can be some inconsistancies there. The owner we rented from would only email back and I couldn't get ahold of her by phone.

Very comfortable room with elegant decor. Our room faced the river pool and koi pond. From a distance we were able to see the ocean. The kitchen is fully equipped with high end appliances. Our room had two bedrooms with 2.5 baths. Two couples can easily stay here easily without feeling crowded.
What we liked was the convenient location of the resort in the middle of the island - it is just minutes away from the airport. We could travel either direction to Hanalei or Poipu for dinner.
If you're looking for a fitness center, it is small. Although it can be adequate but it's not really nice.
There is a full service Aveda Spa on the premises which is a nice plus for someone wanting to be pampered.
A restaurant located on the property is needed. Although, there is a snack bar, a nice sit down restaurant would add a lot to this resort. There are several restaurants within walking distance. There's a comfortable bar by the beach. A great place to sip drinks and relax!
Ok, this review is absolutely contingent upon one particular unit at this resort--F403. This unit is a 2 bdrm/3bthrm condo. It is in fantastic condition and the owners are prompt, professional, and obviously took care of their home away from home. We (me, wife, two sons [9&7]) just finished a ten day vacation at this unit and we would do it all over again. The unit is large and clean. The resort looks like The Westin Ocean Villas on Maui; similar design of both the resort grounds and the individual units and the swimming pool. The pool and water slides were a huge hit with our kids and my wife enjoyed the strategically located lounge chairs by the pool. The beach directly behind the resort is beautiful but there were virtually no locals or tourists were found; I wonder if this means that the water is unsafe? There are two gas grills on the grounds and it worked out really well for us. The lifeguards/towel providers were pretty cool and a great source for recommendations. The pool side/beach restaurant served pretty good food. It has free parking galore and it located across the street from Safeway, Longs Drugs, a cafe, Cold Stone Creamery, and about 20 minutes from Costco, Wal Mart, and the airport.
