I frequent the Bayview Outpost...mainly on my weekend morning walks to get the paper and some awesome oatmeal cookies (Oat-e-o's or something like that!) I have a sweet tooth so I usually get a package of La Campagne (Mequon bakery) cookies too! Chocolate Oatmeal!
Love the variety of groceries, deli counter sandwiches/breakfasts and the good feeling that I'm supporting a Milwaukee business.
Proud to be a long time owner and shopper of the Outpost. I love the high quality foods, friendly staff, and ease of finding whatever I need. The butchers are awesome at helping me find the right meat, seasoning, or sauce to marinade. I love buying local. I can walk there, know they have what I need, and if they don't, they will get it for me. The prices are reasonable. You really can't out a price on good health.
Thank god for Outpost! Essential for any vegan visiting Milwaukee with the hopes of cooking their signature dish for their family. One Christmas, I wanted to make a vegan quiche. Thank you Outpost, for making that possible.
They have tofutti cream cheese and sour cream, lots of tofu, soy nog (when in season), vegan Parmesan... all of the essentials.
I know there is a Whole Paycheck now but I'd much prefer doing my shopping at Outpost.
There are now three Outpost Natural Foods locations in Milwaukee - the original East side location, the second in Tosa (the address listed here), and the newest on S. Kinnickinnic in Bayview. They are all similar in decor, layout and selection.
They have a great deli/bakery area with some seating for the nearby lunch crowd, a nice wine and beer selection, great produce as well as a nice selection of dry foods. They also have a great variety of bulk items from soap and olive oil to different flours, flax seeds and interesting granola blends.
I love shopping at the Outpost, there's always something interesting, the atmosphere is good and the staff are friendly and helpful. Their motto is something like "large enough to meet your needs and small enough to meet your neighbors," and it's true. I don't personally live in one of those neighborhoods, but it's almost a gathering place, much more appealing than the nearest mega Pick N' Save.
Nothing against Whole Foods, but I truly hope that their opening on the East side this year will not affect the success of the Outpost and the Milwaukee area's other organic grocers like Good Harvest Market and the Health Hut.
aw. I love Outpost too! I work there...bcs I love it there. Thanks for saying such nice things about it. It's kinda like when someone likes the sweater I'm wearing and then I like it more bcs they said how great it was.
Go co-op!
added 2/2/08 we have follow your heart cheese...and we're adding a GREAT tasting mac and cheese recipe to our youtube page in a week. watch http://www.youtube.com... for the recipe!! it's awesome and I'm not vegan
So glad OUtpost opened in Tosa. Great selection. Love the smoothies. Will only buy my fruit at Outpost. Friendly staff. Reasonable prices
My wife and I have been "owners" and regulars at Outpost for quite a few years now. When Milwaukee opened it's first Whole Foods a few years ago we went to that store, gawked at the amazing selection, ready-made food islands, all the bright lights and shiny things. When the novelty wore off we came back to Outpost. Their selection in some cases is even better than Whole Foods, the prices are more reasonable, and, well, they're local. They're owned and operated by folks in our community. Outpost is certainly not as flashy as Whole Foods, but, for my money, it's still the place to go in Milwaukee for organic, vegetarian and vegan foods.
This place is pretty good. I wish they had one in SF. It's like how whole paycheck should be. You know, not totally expensive. They had some good desserts. I got a chocolate mint pie and some holiday cookies and both were AWESOME. The parking lot is teeny, but I usually find a spot before too long. The only thing I was surprised not to find was Follow Your Heart vegan soy cheese. I'd think the vegan cheeseheads would have demanded it.
I'm a regular and an "owner" here, so I'm trying not to be too biased, but this is where I go for all my fresh, bulk items (i.e. teas, spices, rice, dried beans, etc.) and more unusual organic food items. The deli bar has some delicious prepared foods (and I think their roasted chicken is the best of all the local grocery stores') and great, fresh smoothies. The one drawback is that unless you're following the member specials, buying there regularly can get pretty pricey.
i love this place. we do 99% of our grocery shopping here. i love the produce guy - he always has something super fresh and new that we just have to try, and will pull out his knife and cut it up for us to eat on the spot, free of charge. we haven't tried anything from their hot case, but the sandwiches and smoothies and bakery items are delicious.
