I just discovered Out of the Kitchen today. It's on my route to and from work. It's a lovely place to eat breakfast in the morning. My breakfast burrito was freshly prepared. I enjoyed listening to WQXR while I ate. I was so entranced I went back to pick up a sandwich for lunch. My turkey sandwich was equally fresh and tasty.

There is something so sexy to me about a properly cooked medium rare burger. That beautiful stage of borderline rawness where the meat is light pink and just slightly warmed up and almost becomes one with your tongue. It's the stuff romance novels should be based on, I tell ya.

Well that love affair was met a couple weeks ago at Out of the Kitchen. I was starving and after getting stuck in traffic with an angry cab driver that called me a c*cksucker for getting HIM stuck in traffic. (Yep, I am not making that up), I needed to get some food in me, pronto. And so we came here and as I stared at the menu, I realized that I no longer knew how to read English. You know when you are THAT hungry, that you feel like you are in a dream or something? Sounds go in and out and you are practically blurry-eyed? Yeah, that was me.

But then I saw the word Burger and that clicked and so I ordered it. About 8 minutes later, my little white container of burger love arrived and I chowed. There was no lady-like nibbling here, this was a full on burger face plant and it was awesome! With every bite I felt my personality rushing back and that is always a nice feeling when you are sitting across the table from someone and trying to have a conversation, hehe.

So yes, I dug the burger and the iced tea and can't vouch for anything else here, but it was good, the guys working here were nice and they had ac and that is always a plus in this hot ass humid town! :)

This review is for take out...

I always tried to throw these guys a bone as they're around the block from my office.  So, I'd call for breakfast every once in a while, which is to say, I would get an egg sandwich because everything else there is remarkably bad.  For instance, I once had french toast so soggy it was like gruel, and bacon that was like steamed fat.

I called today and they said, "$10 minimum".  I know all the restaurants are raising their prices but unfortunately, most places in this neighborhood have $6-7 minimums for breakfast.  In conclusion, Out of the Kitchen=bad food, stupid owners.

Huh. Mixed reviews, eh?  Well, for now I'm firmly on the pro-side.  Out of the Kitchen is an adorable little spot on Hudson that's perfect for a quick bite - for here, or to-go.  Lots of frou-frou sandwiches and salads made fresh or wrapped up for you to take home.  Good coffee too!  I had the steak sandwich with carmelized onions - tangy and tasty -  and a tomato/potato salad on the side.  It hit the spot for sure.

I haven't had any of the baked goods yet, but Keri M says it's best Rice Krispy treats she's ever had.  And I'm not really a cupcake fanatic (more of a cookie man, myself), so it doesn't bother me who makes their frosting.  Service was fine for me, maybe I'm just lucky that way.  I remain a fan until proven otherwise.

Popped in for a quick cupcake. Service was not very stellar, and I realized that in the 1 minute I was actually in the place. Cupcake was good, like the one your mom made as a little kid. If you want just one homemade-tasting cupcake, come here. If you want more, make your own Betty Crocker's at home.

Stopped into this place last week and grabbed the BEST rice krispy square ever.  They also have some pretty yummy bakery treats: black and white cookies, peanut butter cookies with a hershey kiss int eh middle (omg) and so many more....I noticed they have a pretty substantial selection of salads, paninis and that sort of thing so I'll make a trip back to test that out.

If you'd like to avoid having someone make you feel as though serving you is beneath them and that you are only adding to the misery that is their life, buy a Duncan Hines box mix and a can of frosting from the grocery store and make some cupcakes yourself. They'll taste just like "Out of the Kitchen's"  $2 cupcakes, but you won't get any of the nasty attitude that comes with 'em.

Our receptionist recommended that I try this place.  I checked Yelp reviews, and for the most part, you all concur!  SO, I decided to give it a go myself.

I called in an order (to be picked up rather than delivered) and the girl taking the order was clearly not capable of very much more than that, because she was having difficulty understanding that I wanted 2 hotdogs, not 1, and that I wanted them plain (as in nothing on them at all) .

I know what you may be thinking..."Hot dogs?".   Yeah, hot dogs!  I wanted a hot dog.  I couldn't help it.  I wanted one that was yummy, not one that sits in water for a week.  (ewe)....It was all I could think about.  I had just eaten lunch, but still I was salivating for a juicy wiener. (shut it whores, I totally know what you're thinking...rude!)  I wanted it with ketchup only, and nothing else.  What did I get?  From the incompetent girl who doesn't understand what "PLAIN" means?  I got 2 hotdogs with kraut that made them all sour.  Mean.  I wasn't very thrilled BUT......

The dogs were perfect.  The bread stayed crispy after being grilled and the kraut added (and removed by me).  The fries were crispy and tasted as though they were cooked in peanut oil, which is, in my opinion, and that of the Belgian frites makers, the ONLY way to roll.

The service was fast, and the place was bustling with patrons, so I imagine that the balance of their services/products are pretty great! I'm going back next week to try Sam P's recommended sandwich!  Super excited! I'll let it slide that the girl couldn't grasp the concept of "plain", and attribute it to her mood as a result of the day, because I can totally empathize with her!

In concept, this place is fantastic...neighborhood bakery with soups, salads, sandwiches.  Unfortunately, Matt C. is absolutely right about their decline in service and food.  The guys/gals at the counter keep the line moving at a snails pace.  There'll be 4 people lined up for service while they chat.  The food has definitely taken a turn for the worse...and there should be way more things coming fresh from the kitchen.  Unfortunately their short order cook keeps things moving at a snail's pace as well.  Would love to see this place get it together and become a success!

Out of the Kitchen has moved a couple blocks South to the corner of Leroy and Hudson. I'd love to write a review about the new space. I'd love to, but I can't. After being a loyal customer for several years, the folks at Out of the Kitchen moved into a space with a large step entry. It's a shame, I used to love they're iced coffee, incredible cookies (especially the black and white cookies) and wonderful cupcakes. It was always a little pricey, but good. I'm giving OOTK 4 stars for their food which I can't knock and the friendly staff which I'll miss.

Wheelchair access: See above. Once again I'm amazed that renovations are done without addressing accessibility. One step is an easy fix during construction and it would make life easier for people with strollers as well.

I work a few blocks from OOTK, and was excited about the new location half the distance from my office. However, my co-workers and I agree that the food is half as good in their new location, and the service has gone down as well. The longer counter makes butting in line commonplace, and the counter service has become lackadaisical. I could forgive that if the food was up to the old standard, but I just pulled a piece of cartilage out of my OOTK soup the length of my pinky. Gross.
Even the cookies have taken a turn for the worse. Sad.

Out of the Kitchen recently moved a few blocks south on Hudson Street, and the new space is lovely, light-filled, and much more spacious.  While it still fills up for lunch, it's pretty easy to get a table and enjoy the gourmet goodies available all day long.  I'm a big fan of the portobello sandwich and the cold salads.  The cupcakes are fantastic -- not too sweet, with just the right amount of moisture.  This is a great spot for lunch, whether you're taking it out or eating in.

I was a little nervous biting into a cupcake here given some hype this place has gotten, but my tastebuds were quite pleased. Granted, I didn't have a regular cupcake, so it's not a fair battle- I had some sort of cheesecake cupcake with a crunchy cookie-ish crust and thick fudgy chocolate frosting. It was yummy. Will definitely be back to try the regular cupcakes.

Edit: Hmmmmm, upon further consumption of the cheesecake cupcake, i realized that the thick chocolate fudgy frosting tasted suspiciously like Duncan Hines prepared frosting. And by "suspiciously", I mean "exactly". Anyone care to argue? anyone??

ANOTHER Edit: After deciding not to wait in the cold on a long line for a Magnolia cupcake, Out of the Kitchen clicked in my brain as the closest cupcake venue. How, HOW did I forget that they served me a cupcake with Duncan Hines Frosting?! Sadly, this valuable knowledge escaped from my brain and they fooled me again with another bad cupcake. And I was twice as upset to taste this sorry excuse for a cupcake the second time around. And the cheesecake cupcake at least had a yummy crust and cheesecake middle- the regular chocolate cupcake was totally dry.

Shame on you, Out of the Kitchen, and your "Cupcakes are our specialty" sign!

i'm really sad about the service at the counter here because i think the food is great. it took me 1/2 an hour to get breakfast and coffee to go and there were only 2 people in line ahead of me.

I had a whole bunch of Out of the Kitchen cupcakes for my birthday and they were AMAZING! Way better than anything from Magnolia. But then I took a friend directly to Out of the Kitchen deliberately to wow her with the cupcakes and they were just so-so. Really not fabulous at all. Dry and crumbly. I have to give them another chance, I guess, but consistency is important in this town!

They don't fool around when it comes to sweet treats.
They sell some of the best cookies in the city. The black and white cookies put all those Italian bakeries to shame. You'll be reminiscing about the oatmeal raisin cookies for days afterward.

If I could marry a bakery, this would be the one.

forget about magnolia. Out of the Kitchen is your one stop cupcake shop. The amount of icing on these suckers is actually bigger than the cake itself. I am a sugar fiend so icing is the most important part of the cupcake for me.
They also have big cookie icing sandwiches.....i guess you'd call them? maybe? Anyway...they're chocolate chunk cookies with vanilla icing in the middle of them...if you're lucky they'll have the ones with caramel in the middle. sugar orgasm deluxe.

Take out place. They have really good sandwiches and wraps, but the real treat here are the desserts. Make sure you order something sweet to go along with your lunch. A slice of their cheesecake is the perfect end to any meal!

I have always been too excited about getting a coffee & a sweet treat here, that I never think to go here for "real food".  The cookies are dynamite.

Good to know that the sandwiches are worth a stop.

out of the kitchen? how about out of this effen world cupcakes?!?! this place puts magnolia bakery to shame...and yet magnolia still has lines that round the corner and this place...this place does not. so walk the extra few blocks (you'll be glad you did, after a cupcake or two) and try a truly great (read: moist) cake with a layer of frosting (read: tastes like pudding!) that is both decadent and delicious. i ordered a whole dozen once for a group of fourth graders and they went nuts over them! also, the cupcakes are HUGE and come in chocolate and vanilla (cake and frosting).  but if you don't have a sweet tooth, this place also has great gourmet sandwiches and salads, although its a little bit on the pricey side...hence, gourmet.

i'm not a big magnolia's cupcake fan, but can someone explain why i saw a delivery truck deliver an entire crate filled with duncan heins mix to them?  I somehow think their cupcakes aren't made from scratch...

i haven't tried magnolia - nor do i really care to - but these cupcakes are sick.  you can't go wrong with the yellow cake and chocolate frosting - those are amazing. i call the chocolate icing heaven in your mouth.  but a lot of people also really enjoy the vanilla icing as well.  their four varities suffice for me - i don't need any special red, orange, or otherwise.
i do hear great things about buttercup cafe from a reputable source though - will have to try that next.
