Hazelnut coffee, (certain) cupcakes, linzer cookies, breakfast sandwiches are all pretty dope.  Salads, sandwiches, prepared foods & basically just about everything in the place are $1 - $2 overpriced & that's kind of enough of a problem to keep me away.  End up tasting fine, but remembering how expensive items are often stop me from going in.

Having worked down the street for 5 years, am well-acquainted with the weekly perfunctory office celebrations for birthday/shower/last-days that often feature their cupcakes.  Maybe it's in my head, but I think quality has gone down a bit since they moved to the new digs down Hudson.

One thing I keep meaning to do is go in the evening & sit outside with a drink.  Maybe that would re-inspire me, but I don't know, everything's just sort of...blah...

Nice little bakery that also serves beer, wine and liquor. I came here to pregame before my real happy hour. Not really a big selection of beer since they are not an official bar but its still a nice place to sit and hang out.

As far as something to snack on I had the vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting and I must say it was a little dry. I'm sure it was made fresh first thing in the morning but at 5p it wasn't that fresh.

After reviewing the menu I would like to come back for breakfast and hopefully move my rating from 2 stars to 4 stars. Its such a nice and cozy place I would not like to leave it at 2 stars but the cupcakes made me do it.

I loved this place back when it was a dinky little hole in the wall a few blocks down from their upgraded corner residence nowadays.

Their cupcakes used to sit front and center by the open glass storefront, lined up so neatly. I used to think it was a fake display because I never understood how they managed to get their cupcake frosting to look that way. It was like an army of cupcakes, same size same form, same everything. So uniform and neat.

The day I walked in and ordered my first cupcake from them, I've been a fan ever since. It is exactly how I remember my childhood homemade cupcakes to taste like. Anything that can help me relive those sweet childhood moments as an adult now is a success to me. I regularly go out of my way to stop by their new place and order up a cupcake to go or just enjoy it on the little bench outside. It was really my favorite underrated cupcake place for a long, long time.

It makes me a bit sad now because lately the cupcakes are a hit or miss. I've come by and sometimes they are a temporary moment of heaven on earth and sometimes it's too dry or stale tasting. But I definitely don't write them off.

They make simple cupcakes not really playing with some of the more sophisticated flavors other bakeries have been known for. But I can appreciate a nice vanilla and yellow cupcake. It's getting back to basics people.

Out of the Kitchen is overpriced, for sure, but the quality of the food is consistently above average. Check out the sandwich case in the back for an on-the-go lunch: the chipotle chicken sandwich with avocado and tomato is crave-worthy. Their dessert selection is even better: the black and white cookies are made with the same frosting as their cupcakes, and the blondies are scrumptious and taste homemade with slightly burnt edges. I wouldn't recommend it as an everyday place for lunch (I've not been here for dinner, so I can't speak of their dinner prices or selection) but it's great when you're craving something delicious, fresh-tasting and comforting.

Okay, I'm a size queen.
I'm a size queen for big n' luscious brownies!
Back when I worked (on) Hudson Street, I'd visit Out of the Kitchen to grab a succulent  walnut & chocolate chip brownie...as big as my face! Their generous baked goods really do eat like a meal, so save some for the ride home!

This eatery used to be a block uptown from it's current location.  They lost their lease and their previous location remains vacant due to the excessive greed of the landlord.  The new location I am sure is no bargain as reflected in the significant rise in prices there.  Being a small businessman I am no stranger to this dilemma.  Nevertheless the prices have earned them the nickname "Out of [the] Pocket" by less than wealthy locals and my wife and I found this nickname to be quite apt.  Not that the prices discourage people from eating there.  They are regularly full and bustling.  The food is tasty and healthy.  The staff are not the most friendly, but I know how difficult it is to be friendly when you are swamped with customers.  If I could have given them two and a half, I would have but I rounded down because I have experienced better price-wise from the health food store up the block.

... Out of the kitchen and out of your wallet?

Salads consisting of 3 ingredients: $8.
Sandwiches that you can make at home: $8.
Cupcakes out of a box: $2.
Soup that can come out of a can: $5.

The feeling of getting ripped off: sadness.

Overpriced and overrated.

This area needs more lunch options nearby.

Black and White cookie search, Stop 1:

This place is very cute and I would like to come back when I'm not on a very serious search for the perfect black and white cookie in all of Manhattan.

The B n W review: smaller than the expected large oval drop. Frosted vs. hard icing. Much more like a cupcake top or a sugar cookie than a black and white.

Their small, and one size only, tops of at a $1.50.

Good, but nothing grande about this guy.

This place needs to get over itself.

We wandered in and ordered a sirloin burger and a cupcake to share.  It was 7pm on a Wednesday and the place was completely empty inside and out.  We ordered at the counter and upon receiving out food, sat down outside on the patio to eat this small meal (would have taken about ten minutes).  The man working behind the counter came out and told us it is table service only after 5 and we could not sit there.  I don't think he realized quite how ridiculous he sounded.  The place was empty, not a soul, and we had just given them business.  We gave him a look like "come on..." and he said was the owner was there and would be very mad.  If I was in a more feisty mood I would have asked to speak to the owner.  This place looks like a glorified deli/takeout place--definitely not a place to insist on table service only when it's a ghost town, we had such a small amount of food, etc.  The burger was fine and so was the cupcake, but eating it in the car kind of got in the way of the experience if you know what I mean.

Out of the Kitchen's cupcakes went to Magnolia and Buttercup and kicked their cupcakes' asses!
Best cupcakes in Manhattan!

Simple choices but oh so delish! I love these cupcakes.
They are always moist, just the right sweetness and remind me of real homemade cupcakes like I would get as a kid.
Your choices are chocolate or vanilla icing and chocolate or vanilla cake.
Simple, yet amazing.

My old office would order a huge batch at least once a month for birthdays. You CANNOT resist them. Try and avoid the leftovers in the office break room...just try. They sing a siren song of sweet yumminess. The whisper sweet nothings at you when you pass them by and you must give in.

When I get married, to hell with a cake, I am having cupcakes from Out of The Kitchen. Yes I am serious!

I start by saying that while many come here for lunch, tasty cupcakes and/or Happy Hour, I went here to try their dinner options.  And let me just say, they were DE-LISH!

My parents and I each chose a different option from their small, simple menu.  There was a bit of a wait which I thought was slightly odd since it was rather early on a chilly Saturday night and not too many other diners,  however when our dishes arrived we were quite pleased.  Each dish was arranged in a very eye-appealing way, portions were ample, and we couldn't wait to dig in.  I got the pork medallions with sour cherries on a bed of broccoli rabe with carrots.  Wow!  I could barely believe my tastebuds!  Each item was cooked to perfection.  The meat was very flavorful and the glaze from the cherries heightened the flavor without overpowering it.  The broccoli rabe was bitter in just the right way with buttery fresh carrots - a perfect accompaniment to the sweet and savory pork.  My mom had the braised short ribs which were divine, and my dad's hangar steak with creamed spinach was apparently quite good as he said he would order it again.  I'm sticking with the pork!

The owner was also very gracious and gave us each a truffle to finish off the meal which was a nice touch.  I was actually so happy with my meal, I couldn't eat mine (a first).  Would definitely go back and recommend.  It was slightly more than the average, but was a noteworthy meal in a low key, homey vibe.  You should definitely go!

There is something so sexy to me about a properly cooked medium rare burger. That beautiful stage of borderline rawness where the meat is light pink and just slightly warmed up and almost becomes one with your tongue. It's the stuff romance novels should be based on, I tell ya.

Well that love affair was met a couple weeks ago at Out of the Kitchen. I was starving and after getting stuck in traffic with an angry cab driver that called me a c*cksucker for getting HIM stuck in traffic. (Yep, I am not making that up), I needed to get some food in me, pronto. And so we came here and as I stared at the menu, I realized that I no longer knew how to read English. You know when you are THAT hungry, that you feel like you are in a dream or something? Sounds go in and out and you are practically blurry-eyed? Yeah, that was me.

But then I saw the word Burger and that clicked and so I ordered it. About 8 minutes later, my little white container of burger love arrived and I chowed. There was no lady-like nibbling here, this was a full on burger face plant and it was awesome! With every bite I felt my personality rushing back and that is always a nice feeling when you are sitting across the table from someone and trying to have a conversation, hehe.

So yes, I dug the burger and the iced tea and can't vouch for anything else here, but it was good, the guys working here were nice and they had ac and that is always a plus in this hot ass humid town! :)

Huh. Mixed reviews, eh?  Well, for now I'm firmly on the pro-side.  Out of the Kitchen is an adorable little spot on Hudson that's perfect for a quick bite - for here, or to-go.  Lots of frou-frou sandwiches and salads made fresh or wrapped up for you to take home.  Good coffee too!  I had the steak sandwich with carmelized onions - tangy and tasty -  and a tomato/potato salad on the side.  It hit the spot for sure.

I haven't had any of the baked goods yet, but Keri M says it's best Rice Krispy treats she's ever had.  And I'm not really a cupcake fanatic (more of a cookie man, myself), so it doesn't bother me who makes their frosting.  Service was fine for me, maybe I'm just lucky that way.  I remain a fan until proven otherwise.

when i first moved to the city, i used to love these cupcakes. however, the quality has steadily decreased. what sucks is that there's no reason it should go down - they're obviously doing well since they relocated to this larger location about 2 years ago.

the cake is dry and too airy for my taste. in fact, the icing is the only thing saving the cupcake. (i've heard rumors it's actually just store-bought icing that's whipped very well, but an old colleague brought a cupcake to the chef in her cooking class to decipher whether or not it was homemade ... sadly, they couldn't figure it out, and so the mystery of the icing continues.) hell, screw the cake. if you could give me just a bowl of icing, i'd rather eat that.

i've never tried their REAL food (e.g. sandwiches, salads), but i have sampled other desserts like rice pudding and brownies. all were so-so.

if NYC wasn't the home of the cupcake, then i might have given OOTK a higher rating. but to compete in a city where there's a bigger, moister and more extravagant cupcake around the corner for the same price, OOTK needs to up its game.

Cupcake Review

Like many New Yorkers, I like to try all of the cupcakes this city has to offer.  I was told OTK had comparably yummy ones and went to get some.  Much to my disappointment, the cupcakes are priced the same as Magnolia, Buttercup, etc., but they absolutely DO NOT offer even the slightest amount of similar quality.  YUCK!  The frosting tastes incredibly similar to Pillsbury or any other processed frosting.  The cake isn't very good either.  And I must say that if I buy a small box of REAL cupcakes, by the time I get home, the frosting doesn't get all gloopy and pretty much melt off of the cupcake.  Despicable.  They shouldn't even bother making them.

I can't say much about their other food, but I can say, save your dollars for a more worthwhile treat.

This review is for take out...

I always tried to throw these guys a bone as they're around the block from my office.  So, I'd call for breakfast every once in a while, which is to say, I would get an egg sandwich because everything else there is remarkably bad.  For instance, I once had french toast so soggy it was like gruel, and bacon that was like steamed fat.

I called today and they said, "$10 minimum".  I know all the restaurants are raising their prices but unfortunately, most places in this neighborhood have $6-7 minimums for breakfast.  In conclusion, Out of the Kitchen=bad food, stupid owners.

I was a little nervous biting into a cupcake here given some hype this place has gotten, but my tastebuds were quite pleased. Granted, I didn't have a regular cupcake, so it's not a fair battle- I had some sort of cheesecake cupcake with a crunchy cookie-ish crust and thick fudgy chocolate frosting. It was yummy. Will definitely be back to try the regular cupcakes.

Edit: Hmmmmm, upon further consumption of the cheesecake cupcake, i realized that the thick chocolate fudgy frosting tasted suspiciously like Duncan Hines prepared frosting. And by "suspiciously", I mean "exactly". Anyone care to argue? anyone??

ANOTHER Edit: After deciding not to wait in the cold on a long line for a Magnolia cupcake, Out of the Kitchen clicked in my brain as the closest cupcake venue. How, HOW did I forget that they served me a cupcake with Duncan Hines Frosting?! Sadly, this valuable knowledge escaped from my brain and they fooled me again with another bad cupcake. And I was twice as upset to taste this sorry excuse for a cupcake the second time around. And the cheesecake cupcake at least had a yummy crust and cheesecake middle- the regular chocolate cupcake was totally dry.

Shame on you, Out of the Kitchen, and your "Cupcakes are our specialty" sign!

Came here for brunch on a Sunday.  The restuarant is fairly small and has the feel of a small town diner ... a good one. I got chicken club sandwich which I thoroughly enjoyed with nicely grilled bacon inside. The plate came with thin and nicely crispy shoestring-fries. The 'Spicy Bloody Mary' was not too spicy but good none the less. I am looking forward to our next trip.

Out of the Kitchen has moved a couple blocks South to the corner of Leroy and Hudson. I'd love to write a review about the new space. I'd love to, but I can't. After being a loyal customer for several years, the folks at Out of the Kitchen moved into a space with a large step entry. It's a shame, I used to love they're iced coffee, incredible cookies (especially the black and white cookies) and wonderful cupcakes. It was always a little pricey, but good. I'm giving OOTK 4 stars for their food which I can't knock and the friendly staff which I'll miss.

Wheelchair access: See above. Once again I'm amazed that renovations are done without addressing accessibility. One step is an easy fix during construction and it would make life easier for people with strollers as well.

They don't fool around when it comes to sweet treats.
They sell some of the best cookies in the city. The black and white cookies put all those Italian bakeries to shame. You'll be reminiscing about the oatmeal raisin cookies for days afterward.

forget about magnolia. Out of the Kitchen is your one stop cupcake shop. The amount of icing on these suckers is actually bigger than the cake itself. I am a sugar fiend so icing is the most important part of the cupcake for me.
They also have big cookie icing sandwiches.....i guess you'd call them? maybe? Anyway...they're chocolate chunk cookies with vanilla icing in the middle of them...if you're lucky they'll have the ones with caramel in the middle. sugar orgasm deluxe.

I just discovered Out of the Kitchen today. It's on my route to and from work. It's a lovely place to eat breakfast in the morning. My breakfast burrito was freshly prepared. If you'd like to avoid having someone make you feel as though serving you is beneath them and that you are only adding to the misery that is their life, buy a Duncan Hines box mix and a can of frosting from the grocery store and make some cupcakes yourself. They'll taste just like "Out of the Kitchen's"  $2 cupcakes, but you won't get any of the nasty attitude that comes with 'em.

In concept, this place is fantastic...neighborhood bakery with soups, salads, sandwiches.  Unfortunately, Matt C. is absolutely right about their decline in service and food.  The guys/gals at the counter keep the line moving at a snails pace.  There'll be 4 people lined up for service while they chat.  The food has definitely taken a turn for the worse...and there should be way more things coming fresh from the kitchen.  Unfortunately their short order cook keeps things moving at a snail's pace as well.  Would love to see this place get it together and become a success!

I had a whole bunch of Out of the Kitchen cupcakes for my birthday and they were AMAZING! Way better than anything from Magnolia. But then I took a friend directly to Out of the Kitchen deliberately to wow her with the cupcakes and they were just so-so. Really not fabulous at all. Dry and crumbly. I have to give them another chance, I guess, but consistency is important in this town!

Our office used to be located across the street from OOTK. I was a fan when they were in their old location further up the block on Hudson Street. I was amazed at the selection of cookies (chocolate chip with macadamia nuts!), and I don't think I need to mention their cupcakes. Well, okay, I will mention them. I maintain their cupcakes are *better* than the overly-hyped Magnolia bakery. Nothing fancy, vanilla with chocolate, chocolate-chocolate, vanilla with vanilla and chocolate with vanilla....one doesn't really need much more than that. Seriously. Oh, and they make the best lemon bars too. They have a decent selection of sandwiches and sides in the back of the store. I think the best deal is three sides for $10...or at least I think you can still order that (of note, sweet potato salad and beet salad). Their coffee is pretty good too. I would suggest not dining in because sometimes NYC tour buses park nearby and the place gets overwhelmed with tourists who don't know how to behave in a public place (not knowing how to order or pay for their food, and just being general nuisances). So, I suggest ordering and leaving quickly. The staff are, uh, shall we say a little out of it sometimes, but on the whole OOTK food is well worth it.

Out of the Kitchen is right down the block from the Yelp offices so we stop in here pretty much daily. I am a big (HUGE!) fan of the pre-made sandwiches they have stocked in the back; in particular, the chicken salad with arugula on a multigrain bun but have also been known to get the roast beef with horseradish on sourdough or the honey mustard grilled chicken. Oh boy are they good and big and they only use the best, freshest ingredients so you know you won't get anything funky or fatty in there! When I try to be skinny, the salads (3 bean!!!!) and soups also hit the spot. I also love that they have hot entrees so when it's chilly out or you are feeling particular hungover, you can get a crabcake sandwich with the most ungodly good fries or skewers, pizza - pretty much anything! And last but not least, the pastry case. I hate (LOVE!) when Sam brings back some of the homemade cookie sandwiches. They also have red velvet cake that screams my name every time I walk by. As do the cupcakes. Funny that. Surprisingly, they also have a 100% full bar and do Happy Hours nightly as well as supper service. I haven't been (yet) but I have a feeling we'll sneak over soon for a Summer Friday.

i haven't tried magnolia - nor do i really care to - but these cupcakes are sick.  you can't go wrong with the yellow cake and chocolate frosting - those are amazing. i call the chocolate icing heaven in your mouth.  but a lot of people also really enjoy the vanilla icing as well.  their four varities suffice for me - i don't need any special red, orange, or otherwise.
i do hear great things about buttercup cafe from a reputable source though - will have to try that next.

Out of the Kitchen recently moved a few blocks south on Hudson Street, and the new space is lovely, light-filled, and much more spacious.  While it still fills up for lunch, it's pretty easy to get a table and enjoy the gourmet goodies available all day long.  I'm a big fan of the portobello sandwich and the cold salads.  The cupcakes are fantastic -- not too sweet, with just the right amount of moisture.  This is a great spot for lunch, whether you're taking it out or eating in.

Take out place. They have really good sandwiches and wraps, but the real treat here are the desserts. Make sure you order something sweet to go along with your lunch. A slice of their cheesecake is the perfect end to any meal!
