I don't think I'll be buying any meat anywhere else in Manhattan. This place is about as good as it gets in every way, including value. The butchers are the biggest sweethearts ever. Not a common way to describe butchers. Don't worry about sounding stupid, they will be super accommodating. Perhaps the only problem is vegetarianism.

Get yourself a 2" dry-aged rib-eye. It's about $20 and will be the best steak you'll ever have.

This place is old school.  The Ottomanelli brothersstill run it, and they've done so for 65 years. For being old guys who are still working, they're not at all grumpy, and couldn't be friendlier.

The quality of the meat is great, and their prices/quality is better than anything you'll find at New York's overpriced supermarkets.

Come check out this old school butcher shop, you wont regret it.

    5 star for quality meats
2 star for service (varies on what grumpy old man you get)
Whole Foods is equally as good without the hassle.

Not cheap, but for what you get, the prices are VERY reasonable.  After all, prime dry aged beef costs money!

The old guys behind the counter can look a little intimidating.  The first time I went I got this really cranky looking dude, but he turned out to be real sweetheart. These guys behind the counter are real butchers...they know what they are doing and I have found them to be very accommodating.  So refreshing to deal with professionals and not some moron who knows nothing about meat.

This is my go to place when I want a steak that is not grass fed. Also great place to go if you want to make burgers...pick the cuts and have them grind them for you. Or if you don't want your nice cuts mixed with whatever stuff they ground before you, then just take it home put it in freezer for a while before grinding.

If making burgers, I recommend half short ribs and half flap meat....per ATK/

Just an amazing meat market. Never bought anything here that wasn't incredibly tasty - had beef, chicken, rabbit - all top-notch. And no, you won't find meat this tasty at Whole Foods.

How can you not love these guys!  I've been a regular here for nine years and yeah, sometimes the steaks are cut a little uneven and my credit card comes back to me with gore all over it, but hey, this place is history!

I know the Ottomanelli brothers by name and they know me.  They're not just my butchers, they're like family!

You can't beat the prices, especially when you consider that most of their beef is dry aged on premises.  You'll easily pay $10-12 per pound more at Whole Foods for dry aged beef of any variety.  If you want it, they have it.  If they don't, they'll get it.

Who cares if they don't have crisp white shirts like the guys at Lobel's.  They're not Lobel's, but they're not trying to be either!

    Ottomanelli's ROCKS!!!!!!!!

Holy crap.  New rule.  Any meat I'm getting must come from Ottomanelli.  Honestly I was a little thrown by the price of my New York strip steaks, but they were worth every beefy little penny.  Reasonable really. The selection is mind blowing and the guys behind the counter were the real deal.  There's something so satisfying about patronizing an old school New York place that so easily exceeds expectations.  Whole Foods can bite it.

I came here on the recommendation of a friend. I wanted to make duck prosciutto but couldn't find a grocery store that sold duck breast, but Ottomanelli & Sons had duck breast. Relatively cheap too, at $9.99 a lb. The butchers are really friendly and helpful, and one even remarked to me, "That was easy!" - I guess I was one of the few that didn't ask him a ton of questions!

It's about time I share one of my secrets to creating mouthwatering meat dishes. Basically, it all comes down to where you get the meat. And this secret fortunately allows you to do that without sporting a camouflage getup or donning a rifle! That said, I always turn to Ottomanelli's for wild game.

I came here recently to buy hard-to-find boar for the Wild Boar Ragu dish I was planning to make, and I can confidently say that they know a thing or two when it comes to meat, given that they've been in business for over a hundred years. Plus, they don't skimp on sharing their insider secrets or giving you their best cut either. The butchers behind the counter are about as old as the brand, boasting, big, thick chops that aren't their only offering to suggest that size does matter; after visiting this butchering brood as many times as I have, I am fully convinced it's a requirement to have hands the size of a porterhouse steak to work at Ottomanelli's!

In the end, the home cooked Wild Boar Ragu turned out beautifully, in both taste and appearance. A round of applause for Ottomanelli's; I'm lovin' the special touch they add to my culinary concoctions.

Want to get quality, tasty meats?  Go to Ottomanelli!

My husband who works in the restaurant business introduced me to this meat shop with history and friendly & knowledgeable staff.  I have bought filet mignon and rib eye.  They were heavenly delicious.  I've also eaten their meat at restaurants, and they were amazing too.  If you are shopping here and not sure what would be the best for your cooking or taste, you can talk to the staff and they will kindly tell you what to get.

FYI - They own a restaurant in Upper East Side.  You can have steaks, hamburgers, and more, that use the meat from their own meat shop.

Fresh and very old New York glamorous. Everyone who works here is uncommonly nice and helpful, no carcass snobs!

When I'm in love with someone, I get a cut of meat from Ottomanelli's and romance them with it. When I proposed to my good friend Esther K. that we should get an apartment together--- I served her New Zealand lamb chops I got from this place.

We ate it while we watched a bootleg movie online. Now that we've become adults. After being together for three years, we've decided to move on...

When I find love again, it'll be anointed by Ottomanelli's.

I am a chef and love this place to death.. I find it to be the best butcher in New York..

Whether its 25 pound of buffalo marrow, 20 pounds of foie gras, venison ribs, venison loin, quail, duck, goose, lamb, or aged ribeyes, this place has it all..

Run by brothers, its a family operation.. Do not confuse the spot on Bleeker with the other fake Ottomanellis around town.. The are poor excuses for this place.

Talk to the guys behind the counter, they treat you like there best customer..

Ottomanelli's specializes in wild game, but I haven't mustered up the courage yet.

I buy almost all of my meat here, which is usually short ribs, flank steak, skirt steak, beef tenderloin, rack of lamb, pork belly, slab bacon, and the occasional pork chop. They also sell chicken, duck, home made sausages (and I think other cured meats). They'll ask what you want done with it, and if you don't know they'll coach you through it. If you look like you're going overboard, they'll ask you if you're sure without making you look stupid. "One rack of lamb, trimmed, frenched, and I'll take the trimmings, please."

This place has a lot of character and it's hard to imagine going anywhere else. I also enjoy watching them trim the meat. If you don't like that, you're probably the sort of person who's comfortable shopping in a grocery store with no visible butcher's counter. Creepy.

They've been selling imported foie gras, and one of these days I'm going to pick up some duck.

The other thing that's convenient about Ottomanelli's is that you can walk down Bleecker to get to Wild Edible's, Amy's Bread, and Murray's Cheese. Oh, and there is also the Italian grocery whose name escapes me.

This place is awesome.  First, the place.  It's pretty small and not that impressive looking, but the Ottomanelli brothers are very cool and make you feel at home.

Next, the meat.  We bought the dry aged boneless ribeye, and it was one of the best steaks that we've ever had.  It was so tender and juicy.  We have a weak oven with a weak broiler in our apartment, so when we buy steaks at Dean & Deluca or Citarella's, they taste good, but not great, and no better than the steaks that we buy at the local grocery store.  Therefore, I was a bit reluctant to trek all the way down to the west village to try some steak that our broiler would butcher (no pun intended!)  However, even our broiler couldn't mess up this steak - it was that good.  We marinated it with just salt and pepper, and the steak was incredibly juicy.  Also, it was one of the most tender steaks that we've ever had.  I can't wait to try these steaks on an outdoors grill or with a real broiler some time.

Walk by everyday to/from work.  Finally stopped in since I've always wanted to try to cook steakhouse style steaks at home.  Picked up the dry aged rib eye and sirloin.  Cooked them with little olive oil, pepper and salt... AMAZING.  Closest I've ever gotten to restaurant style steaks... i'm not talking the strip from tgi's either, i'm talking quality high end stuff!

I don't know what else I could want from a butcher.  Walk in, get friendly service and fresh meat at reasonable prices, and walk out with a smile.

Somewhat related: fresh ground meat is great.  Seeing the chunk of meat before it gets ground up is reassuring to me.  I bought 1.5 lbs of ground chuck and .5 lb or ground pork for a total of $10.  They made nice meatballs.

I visited Ottomanelli & Sons today for my first time and was very impressed. The following is a break-down of my experience.

    The store:
So--I have a grill on my terrace that I use very often for burgers and steaks, and for a long time I've wanted to try some higher quality meats than what I typically find in the supermarket. After spending time googling terms such as "best butcher in nyc", I decided to try Ottomanelli & Sons. First off, I must say that the butchers here are extremely helpful, easy-going, and take their time with you. It helps that the store isn't too over-crowded. After waiting for a brief 5 to 6 minutes, it was my turn to talk to one of the butchers. Although I was expecting to be rushed along by a crude old-fashioned New Yorker with a thick Brooklyn accent, I was greeted by a kind, well-spoken older man who clearly knew a thing or two about meat.

    The meat:
Now, I wanted to try some steaks and some burger meat, so I asked for a few filet mignon's and 2 pounds of a burger meat blend--whatever blend of meats he thought was best for a burger that matches my ideal specifications (slightly charred on the outside but still pink and juicy in the middle). He gave me a chuck-brisket blend, and I left the shop anxious to get to my grill. Once home, I opened the packages of beef and examined the meat. The ground beef had a freshness that I had never really experienced before. Granted, I haven't toured all the best butchers in NYC yet, and I'm sure other places can compete, but everything about this meat just seemed right. The smell of the beef was fresh, sweet, and inviting, with not even a hint of gamy "raw-beef smell". I don't want to make this review go on too long, but I think it's worth mentioning that standing there in my kitchen smelling the beef was an eye-opening experience, and a memory I will never forget. All at once, I learned that I could buy a quality of beef I previously thought was only attainable at a top steakhouse, and I remembered why I can never be a vegetarian. When preparing the meat for grilling, I only used a pinch of kosher salt for seasoning. With meat this good, I don't like to use any seasonings that could distract from the flavor of the beef, and that includes pepper. So just plain old salt it is--and I recommend that approach whole-heartedly. The finished product didn't let down. Both the burgers and the steak were bursting with flavor, and definitely did not need any other seasoning. Come to think of it, the burgers came out just like I described to the butcher--slightly charred and pink in the middle, like a good steak. The meat was also extremely juicy--so juicy in fact, that during the grilling process I had to use a water bottle to prevent a few flare-ups from getting out of hand. After all was said and done, I had a steak and a burger that were both as close to perfect as I've ever been able to achieve at home.

You open the door and the smell of meat and stale blood hits you like a punch in the gut.  You walk up the ramp, your eye flitting over to the tubs of D'Artagnan duck fat and demi glace in the first refigerator case.  You take stock of your list, intermitently scanning between the crumpled paper in your hand and the various cuts of meat lying supplicant for you.
A white-haired man in an apron smeared with swaths of red and yellow  turns to you and says, "what'll it be today?"  Although you've never been here before his friendly demeanor and the way he poses his question make you feel at home, like a regular; like someone who belongs in this place with the gristled butchers and the slender man with the knife roll on his back discussing rendering lamb fat with another frightening looking man.  You consult your list again and in a confident voice ask for 3 pounds of pork tenderloin, a half rack of lamb or perhaps a couple bone-in rib eye.  The man in the apron is patient with you as he asks how you would like it cut, whether you want the scraps and; if he's not too busy; what dish you'll be preparing.
When he's finished, he weighs and wraps your meat in wax paper and tabulates your bill, in pencil, on a pad near his workstation.  He quotes you a price and you happily hand over your money, gladly paying extra for the care involved in the fresh meat cut by the man in the apron.

As silly as it sounds, it's one of my favorite things, walking from the East Village to buy from these old boys. It's marvelous and truly Old New York. Many "NY" experiences (DiPalo's; Venieros etc) make you feel like a number, even Russ & Daughters. These guys give personable and knowledge service, including cooking tips. They have an excellent selection of meats and game, from sweetbreads to pheasant and great prices that beat most gourmet shops and supermarkets. Superb quality all around. Ottomanelli are top!

Love how they never assume and ask how thick I want the rib eye steaks cut. I've never failed to impress someone who wanted a nice piece of juicy steak with the dry-aged rib eye from this place. Please, can't there be more places like this in the U.S.? I know not many people make their own beef stock these days, probably because there isn't an Ottomanelli's in their hood. Everything you could need, cut to order by guys that know their meat. You only have to look at their hands for their experience and knowledge.

Ottomanelli & Sons is my first stop anytime I'm craving a home-cooked juicy rib-eye steak. I've always found the meat selection at NYC supermarkets to be rather limited and disappointing, so stumbling upon this old-school-style butcher shop was a happy occasion. Walking in, the smell and the look of the guys behind the counter alone just scream good meat. The majority of the butchers have been working there for a few decades, and they're all such sweet men, very New York but very amiable, who obviously know their meat. The selection they provide is impressive, particularly with the narrow size of the shop: They're the only place I've seen in the city that carries venison regularly. Pricing is reasonable, and every steak I've consumed from this shop has been fantastic.

After years of buying meat at grocery stores that I don't like, I decided to 'woman up', face the funk of raw meat smells and go to a real butcher shop. Glad I did. The countermen were much nicer than I would have expected in such a testosterone- and blood-drenched environment and they had what I was looking for--venison and duck--at reasonable prices. If you are searching for ground kangaroo, bison, buffalo, korean eels in sauce or plain old cowmeat, you will also be in luck.

I love this place. The prices are great for Prime Aged Steaks. They seem to have a large selection of different meats. A guy came in for Sweet Breads. And I saw Lamb, sausages, Duck, D'artagon Chicken, and lots of frozen meats. I usually only get the Berkshire Pork Chops here because they sell it for 7.99 a lb. WOW. I can't seem to find it anywhere else. They are really helpful and if you ask they'll give you advice. I once came in for pork belly which they didn't have in the counter. But they dug some out of the freezer and it was Berkshire Pork. Well it was so fatty it was devine. LOL I've also bought some Cowboy Steaks and some Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon. They were a quite decadent, not something to get often.  Better to go during the week when its slower. I went one weekend and was surprised by how many customers they got. Don't be afraid to ask these guys some questions, they might look intimidating but they are  just working hard and will be glad to help you out.
