Homemade Chestnut pasta with Wild Boar & Butternut Squash Gnocchi + Fried Cauliflower starter= Yum... Must return*
Had reservation on a Friday night- that I called and changed a couple times with them sweetly accommodating each request and laughing at my ditziness- and got in right away.
We ordered a starter and two dishes- which came out with regular speed even though the restaurant was buzzing with activity. The cauliflower was filling and the pastas al dente and wonderfully flavored. My Chestnut pasta with Wild Boar had almost a stew like quality to it and very little liquid present. The Butternut Squash Gnocchi was pillow light and had a great flavor that was accompanied by herbs and a slight topping of white sauce.
Our server didn't speak much English but that did not stop him from taking care of our needs- he made the meal and experience seamless.
I understand why La Spiga is rated highly in Seattle... wonderful service and staff, developed food, and great atmosphere. I enjoyed the dark woods and airy industrial quality to the back of the house.
FYI's~
* Does not offer an extensive menu but there are enough choices to satisfy
* Late night happy hour! ~ serve things like $10 perfect lasagna and reduced starters
* Urban style patio out back that the restaurant opens to
* Long bar with tall stools available as well as a few low couch spots by the bar
* Menu stays consistent but switches with seasonal produce and meats as additions
* The Parmesan that comes with the bread is so fresh and tasty!
* There is a private loft that can be booked for large parties or private events
* Make reservations- they are available online or by calling(they answer the phone very early*)
I am sorry Osteria La Spiga I would have loved to give you more than 3 stars but just can't do it. Although the food was great the poor service tarnished the dinner. My friend and I were escorted to our table by the man at the door (who I am guessing was the host but I have never had a host/hostess who doesn't welcome me into their home when you come for dinner) without so much as a smile. We ordered drinks only to wait about 15 min. to receive it. Then they sat waiting at the bar while our waiter helped other tables and the 3 other servers chatted amongst themselves. Well I have to say the bar could have kept them! They were horrible. Neither tasted very good and the flavors were just off. My friends didn't taste like there was anything in it but soda water and some muddle mint leaves. I think this bar tender would benefit from sampling his own drinks once in a while to test the quality. We both ordered the small house salad and the butternut squash and buckwheat gnocchi with mushrooms and cream sauce. The salad was really good for such a simple salad. It had a great vinegarette on it. The gnocchi were d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s! Soft little pillows of goodness that just melt in your mouth.
I have always enjoyed La Spiga, having dined with them when they were on Broadway and also since they have moved to 12th. The new resaurant is beautiful! A big, open space with great use of metal and wood and a lovely patio out back. The service is definitely lacking though. The servers had plenty of idle time to check up on their customers and make sure things were flowing well and I just didn't see that happening. Our server was nice but he couldn't provide really clear explanations of anything we asked about. Maybe he is new? You just want service that is so effortless and efficient that you don't even notice it.
If I were the chef I would be frustrated that the poor service and lack of attention to detail in the front of the house was overshadowing the delicious food coming out of the kitchen.
I really like this place. The food is consistently yummy, the service is good, the space is beautiful and the waiters are hot! What more could you ask for really? Not sure who the "pretentious ponytail dude" is but either he cut his hair or he doesn't work there anymore.
I eat or grab a drink here seriously (and perhaps sadly) once a week.
My old stand by: the cheese plate and the lasagna verdi- YUM!
Pretty Darn Good.
Our waiter also happened to be the sommeilier, so he set us up with 2 amazing bottles of wine. Both cabernets, one from Yakima Valley (the ONLY wine in the house NOT from Italy) and one from Italy. Super props on the wine recommendations.
Thier chefs go back to Italy twice a year, and come back with tons of great recipes and ideas. Very cool. Their menus also change with the seasons and reflect ingrediants they find locally. This menu had huge emphasis on mushrooms, they were in almost everything = Awesome.
Antipasti - had the cauliflower = boring. To me it was basiclly tempura cauliflower with a dash of salt. We also had the prosciutto, it was rich and delicious and went great with thier house made bread and oil/vinegar.
Entrees - I had the Stuffed quail, orange and butternut squash, black rice risotto, white wine jelly glaze. I wouldn't get it again. The butternut squash was very good, but the quail was forgettable. Le Boyfriend got the recommended Lasagna - it was very good and the winner of the table.
The ambiance was upscale but cozy, the booth we were in was large enough to fit 3 people on one side. The place was busy but the staff was pretty good about refilling waters and checking on us. All in a laid back way, allowing us to down our 2 bottles of wine in peace and take our sweet time.
It is a surprisingly large place, with a second floor and an apparent outdoor patio. I will be back.
FYI - the restrooms are all the way outside of the restaurant and downstairs - keep that in mind if you have diners with you that are not too spry.
The space alone is getting 4 stars from me. The restaurant is SO gorgeous. If I got married again, I would totally have my wedding there. I have yet to go in the summer, but I hear the outdoor seating area is fantastic.
Food wise...As someone who doesn't eat meat, the menu is pretty limited. Both times I've eaten here, I've ordered some kind of squash or pumpkin gnocchi. Both times it was great, but I'd like to try something different. They have a wide selection of wines.
I hear the prosciutto starter is wonderful. I enjoyed the cheese wrapped in grape leaves, and the house salad was a crowd pleaser.
Went here last night - and I too had the pleasure of dealing with the "Pretentious ponytail dude."
That's why you get 4 stars La Spiga. Note this.
The prosciutto was to die for.
My white fish stuffed ravioli (white girl name for it as I dont speak Italiano) was spectacular.
Tiramisu? Jesus tap dancing Christ. *drool*
Amazing port that pretentious ponytail dude suggested.
All in all, food was incredible but pony tail boy was disturbing.
I didn't like him because he didn't make eye contact once and literally, like Carrie L said, did the eye roll thing incessantly. Like we were a burden. Almost in a "sorry to bug you sir" kind of way.
Go here, sit on the patio during a nice day, avoid nasty side burn pony tail boy.
We went there to celebrate my girlfriend's recent engagement, it's my 2nd visit to this restaurant and I have to say not a bad Italian restaurant but I am just a little under-impressed.
For starters, we shared several items: cured meat plate, fried zucchini flowers, caprese, cauliflower with salmon sauce. Meat plate is definitely a hit but all others are just ok, nothing really stands out.
I had a hard time ordering for my dinner course, not that there are too much choices but none of the menu items speaks to me...many of the items are just kinda 'boring'. But anyhow, we managed to order a table full of food. We have the following on the table: lamb rack, meat and tomato sauce tagliatelle, gnocchi, grilled pork sausage, lasagna, and tortelli. My favorite were the sausage and gnocchi. All dishes are beautifully presented, flavors are there but boy... they are expensive for the amount of food in the plate! Pasta dishes are 12.00 to 16.00. Meat dishes are 16.00 (sausage) and 28.00 (lamb), for this price I expect more food or a big kick/ wow!
Drinks are ok, not consistent enough. Services were fine except our waiter pour two glasses of champagne on my girlfriend's back and her new purse... talk about a night ruined (poor girl!)
The restaurant is beautifully decorated and it is a great place for date. But for the price, I rather go to Perche No in Wallingford, less pretentious, really good Italian food - family style...
My cousin and I just happened upon this place while walking around the area (we were actually going to look at the toy store downstairs). I was hungry, it looked cool, and smelled amazing - so we decided to give it a try. I really loved how they worked with the natural space of the building. Instead of just walling off the space to make it easier to store things, they suspended the bar wrack from the ceiling that was like 30 feet up! I just love the effect and the natural light that comes in from the skylights. The seating was spaced nicely so you didn't feel like you were sitting on your neighbor's lap.
We both ordered the Caipiroshka della Passione ($9), which is a chili infused vodka with lime and passion fruit juice. It most definitely had a zing to it, but I really enjoyed the combination of sweet and spicy. I had to really sip it, but that was okay because it was worth savoring slowly.
I got the Happy Hour order of the Lasagne Verdi ($10), which was absolutely amazing! It was so light and fluffy, the cheese was smooth and creamy, the noodles the perfect tenderness, and a HUGE portion! I am excited I get to enjoy my left overs tomorrow. ;) And the bread - not sure what it is, some sort of flat bread - is really yummy!
I really hope I get to go back here again to try out some of the other menu items. And since it seems they are big into wine, some of that too. :D I was super impressed by the friendly service and quick food preparation. P.S. I also noticed that you can order take-out! Sawwweeet!
I think the atmosphere out did the food.
La Spiga is a beautiful restaurant with a trendy flair that makes you feel warm and special.
I had high expectations coming to this place but was a bit disappointed with the caliber of the food for the price.
Nothing we ordered stood out to be special or unique.
For the cheese lovers, they have a wide array that you can order as an appetizer or for dessert. They have some cheeses to die for.
If you are looking for a nice restaurant to dine in and mild food, come here and enjoy.
This used to be my favorite restaurant in Seattle...when it was the hole in the wall quaint place on Broadway. But the restaurant has grown up a bit, and the space is sure beautiful...but it's just not the same.
I still love the gnocchi, and will continue to come here because of the gnocchi, as it's the best gnocchi I've had outside of Italy (and I was obsessed with gnocchi in Italy). The lasagna is also fabulous, and I always get the piadina as well. My only complaint is that the portions have definitely been shrinking a bit since they left the Broadway hole in the wall...and less gnocchi makes for a sad QA.
Really pretentious ponytail waiter dude? Really?
Did you think I didn't see you rolling your eyes at my mother or my grandparents?
I suggest you take a cue from the delightful hostess who walked us very slowly to our table - to accommodate the two 90+ year-olds in our party - and who came by not once but twice to make sure all was well.
You never came around unless you had to. And if we wanted you, pretentious ponytail waiter guy, we had to wave you down and then get treated to yet another round of rolling eyeballs.
Thanks for nothing.

STUPID!! (good) Happy Hour!!
Between appointments I stop in this place and take a seat a bar. I am greeted warmly. I order Peroni Beer on draft and Prosciutto Leporati, BOTH delightful! I am impressed!!! THEN I am BLOWN away with the small plates provided ON THE HOUSE!!! Four different (4!! thats right FOUR) lil plates of cashews, zucchini, cheese and pickled veggies! YUMMY!!! I mean for FREE!!!
Did you know THAT!!!?? My total bill was $9.90!!! (not including nice tip!)
Everyone was pretty, server boys & girls, bartendar! Everyone had a smile....
I am going back again real soon!
I still really like it, though the amount of things that I can actually eat on the menu is limited.. and the menu hasn't changed one bit since they opened.
I will say that as far as amazing restaurant spaces go, this is the place to beat in Seattle. The setting here is absolute perfection.
The flatbread is still great, the pastas still fresh and tasty... but I think that I'll probably start trying out some of the other Italian restaurants around town before I head back in here again. It's just become a bit too routine for my liking.
Come on, La Spiga! Mix it up a little... or a lot!

Oh La Spiga.. I'm tellin' ya, I could easily eat several times a week and it would never get old.… Read more »
We went last night. It was okay. I had heard how awesome this place was and while decent, it was not awesome. The service took a long time, although we were given a drink on the house, which was nice. The food was okay. I was surprised at the limited menu.
Definitely worth trying... just go with minimal expecations.
Definitely took me back to Florence once I had a bite of the lasagna. Light and definitely full of flavor...oh so delicious. I was looking for Amorone to go with dinner and the server suggested two delicious alternatives that paired so well with our entrees. THANK YOU! We also tried the white fish ravioli as others had suggested on Yelp and it was just OK for me, not the greatest. If you don't mind the white fish flaky texture and are in the mood for the bland taste with lemon to enhance the flavor then that is the dish for you.
Our server, Taylor was fantastic! So patient, informative and genuinely helpful. If I could get that kind of service everywhere I ate, I would be broke from leaving appreciative tips. We ate outside in the evening and it was about 68 degrees outside. Perfect day!
Uh...yes I too saw the dude with the pony tail :).
We had dinner there last night and it was an excellent experience overall - food, service, and atmopshere.
We started with the proscuitto, which was incredible. I'm not a big fan of proscuitto on a plate normally (vs as an ingredient), but it was perfect! It had a buttery texture without seeming greasy, and was very flavorful without being too salty. A great start to the meal!
We then shared several dishes - beef cheek, pork tenderloin over kale, lasagna, radicchio salad, and mushroom ravioli in white truffle butter.
The truffle ravoili was the unanimous favorite. I love truffle in general, so it is hard to go wrong with me, but we all thought this dish was outstaning.
We thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes, several of which were recommended by our server, who also did a great job on his wine recommendation. He was attentive and open with his recommendations, and very friendly.
Overall, it was an excellent meal, and I hope to try it again on a future visit to Seattle!
Mmmm, meat. Prosciutto to be exact. Love the fat that edges each paper thin slice. No, I don't need any more bread, thank you. Just bring me the potato gnocchi lightly coated with creamy tomato sauce, and the lasagna verde. Oh, am I THAT full already? However is that possible? Perhaps it's the eyeful that my date provided me all evening. Mmmm-hmmm.
The lack of one more star is simply because our bill was over $80 for the two of us and those three plates. I think that means we should drink less booze.
Better interior and consistency than the other Italian restaurants in Seattle. In my 5 visits, I haven't been terribly disappointed and haven't been elated either. Good middle of the road stuff and a tad bit on the expensive side. Service is good though.
Anyway, last night I ordered their bread salad for the first time. It can stand to learn a lot from the Tuscan Bread salad at Dahlia Lounge, which is 10x better. Now I have to go back to DL to cleanse my palette.
Not so tasty food and fairly sloppy service. When I first arrived it took some time for anyone to actually notice me, and when they did notice me, they didn't seem happy to be there. Feelin' the love. When I asked if any of the house wines were chilled, my waiter looked me straight in the eye and said "Yes", he then continued to explain which ones to me telepathically never taking his gaze off me. Unfortunately for me, my Jedi mind powers are a little rusty so all I could do was continue having this staring contest until he realized that his use of the Force was much more powerful than mine. THEN he verbalized which wines were chilled. Not my first awkward moment with a waiter....and definitely not the last...
I came for happy hour, and for a happy hour, it felt pretty pricey. It seemed to be more like a lunch menu than a happy hour menu price-wise. Nevertheless my friend and I found the 3 most delicious sounding items on the menu and ordered them, and this place is definitely overpriced. 1/3 was considered delicious. The Lasagne Verdi. Definitely worth $10. And if you sensed sarcasm in that statement, you need to have your sarcas-o-meter checked, because I sh** you not! I would gladly cough up $10 again for that! Not so much the gnocchi or the prosciutto...and especially not the house wine.
Overall: I would go back to try the dinner, just because I love italian food, and I really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant.
I was shocked at the paltry menu that was presented to me at La Spiga this past week. Another foodie and myself thought we'd wander into what looked like a well composed restaurant. Other than the interior feel of this place, the menu, service and food execution was sub par.
This menu had no first bites that didn't involve fried food or cheese, so looking for something light and summer fresh on this fine August evening was just not possible.
Secondly, there was not a single seafood item on the menu other than fried calamari and the microscopic traces of crab in the ravioli.
Next the salad was mostly yellowed lettuce with a few traces of radicchio for color. Result, no flavor.
More importantly every request to attain something palatable was met with resistance from our server who wasn't interested, except to charge us for small extra items, such as an extra sliver of humbolt fog cheese to add some taste to the salad (which came at a price of $8).
Don't waste your time and money. There are so many other far deserving restaurants in this neighborhood.
La Spiga is great the first few times.
But as somewhere to go repeatedly over time, it doesn't work. The variations in the menus are almost unnoticeable. There's very little point if you're not feeling like meat that day. Everything is pretty decent, but I've spent less money elsewhere for better food.
The first time you go, of course, you will be blown away. And the Lasagna will make you understand Lasagna for the first time if, like me, you've always wondered why on earth people like it.
But you'll get bored with it.
La Spiga is another example of how the Seattle restaurant scene has improved over the years. It's a great place to meet friends and enjoy a world-class meal. That said, I think it's lost a bit of warmth since moving to the new location.
The menu is small but always good. I always feel the meals are a bit overpriced here. I come here with business associates to talk business. I wouldn't just bring my family and friends.
Good eats, great wine list, tad too expensive, atmosphere comfortable, service on the ball, decor in need of update.
I'd go again if I was in the area.
I'm always nervous about going out for Italian in the States, because I travel to Italy every year and, well, that kind of ruins what you thought was good Italian food before you went there. The wide range of reviews for La Spiga didn't help ease my trepidation, but after having been there, I must say that I'll definitely go back.
First, the happy hour is terrific! I recieved 5 complimentary little appetizers. Second the space is very well done and quite beautiful. The food was pretty good, too. I had the tasting menu which was a good value. The gnocchi were fantastic, but the fresh pasta, while decent, could stand some improvement and the tiramisu was really good. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. By the way, it takes about 2 1/2 - 3 hours to get through the tasting menu, which is about how long it takes to get through a meal in Italy. Dining is a social event, it's never just about the food.
I went here last weekend for a birthday dinner. We had a pretty big party (16 or so), and aside from having a limited menu and occasionally not having a fork when something got brought to the table, the service was pretty stellar, which alone probably warrants 5 stars.
And I haven't even gotten to the truffle butter.
There's something about just the smell of truffle butter that drives me wild, and the way it coated the tagliatelle definitely did the trick. I think the word I used the other night was "catnip," and... it's true. To emphasize, I mimed pawing for the plate of pasta. A friend mimed dangling a piece above my head, and I responded appropriately. Thankfully I had the sense to stop short of getting tangled up in tagliatelle on the floor.
Needless to say, it was very good.
The table must have ordered one of everything, because I was amazed at the variety of dishes that came through. Different pastas, different meats, all with a different flavor (except the steak and mashed potatoes... they tasted like TRUFFLE BUTTER again. Awesome.)
At the end, I was satisfied, but worried. All that food plus all the wine and cocktails we'd ordered? I thought I'd definitely be down a pretty penny, and was amazed that it was just over $30 per person. Given everything that I got to try, I consider it a huge bargain.
I'll definitely be back!
Delicious food, free sampler at bar for happy hour! How can they go wrong?
My friend and I went here to try something new.
I had a delicious white truffle linguine. It was cooked to perfection. Only problem was that the size was too little and there was no contrast in the meal. The meal would have been perfect if there was side plates of greens to give the meal a little more color.
For the portion sizes this places was expensive. Great for a date but not for a good full meal.
My review begins with a 6:45 reservation for six people.
Our dinner was a team dinner which included our colleagues and the owner of our company who flew in to Seattle for the day. We decided on the tasting menu for all six after we were told it needed a minimum of two people. We thought it would be good as three sets of plates would come out, each opposite pair sharing. We also ordered 3 bottles of wine.
We were disappointed with the presentation, the portions and the timing. While we were told the presentation would be family style our expectations were set that there would be three sets of each course from the kitchen. Given the size of the table it would make sense to have one plate in the middle with one person on each side. We were served one plate for the entire table (with the exception of dessert). The portions served were so small it amounted to one forkful of protein (Quail) per person. There were two quail dishes each so small I counted a wing in the first course and part of a thigh in the third one. The gnocchi provided just a little more carbohydrate. Finally the timing was bad. Courses one and two came out very quickly, in succession, the third course took between 20 and 30 minutes to come out. The dessert followed the third course quickly. At the end of the meal the owner of our company asked if anyone was still hungry because he was and the entire table all said yes. Our bill came to approximately $456.00 while there was wine, everyone agreed the cost didn't equal the value received.
Last evening was my third visit to La Spiga; it was my first disappointment with it. My manager is a lifelong resident of Seattle and always spoke very highly of this restaurant. He was embarrassed last evening.
I went here a couple weekends ago for a casual dinner with some friends. We sat outside on the very pretty patio, which unfortunately can get windy (and cold at night) and had some very tasty entrees and drinks.
I got a mushroom filled pasta dish which was very delicate and delicious. This place is a bit pricey but it's worth it when you can afford it. The salads and bread appetizers were tasty as well. One caveat was that it took a LONG time for our meal to arrive, but it was Saturday night and we had a blast regardless. Thumbs up!
This place is heaven.
I had the most enjoyable dinner i think I've ever had here.
The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful, kinda rustic with all this wonderful window light. Its just a really amazing space.
I really have an appreciation for a place that can pair the perfect glass of wine with my dinner and La Spiga defiantly hit that nail on the head.
The pasta we had was very simple, asparagus some light cream sauce, in fact all the food we had was pretty basic, but very fresh and very flavorful, and plated very beautifully.
La Spiga is defiantly, 100%, my favorite Italian restaurant of all time.
We had the cheese plate, fried sea food (can't remember that fancy Italian name...), a salad, spaghetti (or that other pasta with fancy name) wiht meat sauce, truffle butter noodle (looked similar to fetuccini, but wasn't called that), beef something, and desserts (blue berry sorbet and apricot something)
I don't eat blue cheese, so wasn't much I could eat on the cheese plate, but the others loved it. Fried sea food was pretty good- the dip was really yummy! We weren't too thrilled abou the sauce for both pasta, but the pasta itself was really good. Beef was good and desserts were really good. And the bread... really really really good!!! It was just a simple flat bread, so I'm not sure why we were so in love with bread especially since all four of us were rice lovers, and three of use rarely ate bread (I generally don't like bread)
If it weren't for the bread, I could live out the rest of my life without ever going back to this place. I'd probably go back for a light lunch with just bread and a salad.... and dessert.... maybe...
Set up a reservation for 8 for my best friend's bridal shower/going away dinner-we got a nice round table upstairs! Everyone that I spoke with on the phone while setting up the reservation was very friendly and informative.
I love the design and ambiance of La Spiga! It was nice not being cramped elbow-to-elbow with another table and that we had the upstairs area where there were only two other groups dining. The servers were friendly, attentive and helpful, explaining some of the dishes, refilled our water before having to ask for it and recommending drinks (the Brachetto was gooood! I don't EVER drink alcohol, but this was sweet and you can barely taste the alcohol - 2 thumbs up!).
I got the gnocchetti... with sausage. I forget the whole name teehee... but it was AWESOME! I've never had gnocci/gnocchetti before (and I'm quite clueless about Italian food except for lasagna and spaghetti) but my mouth and tummy knows what it likes and they realllly like it! The bride-to-be found my dish tastier than hers haha.
Anyway, La Spiga was a great choice for this special occasion - everything was great, and the servers made sure service was smooth.
I just wish that finding parking didn't take 20-30 minutes-then I'd come more often!
Space: beautiful & HUGE (didn't know it went that far back and had an outdoor seating area
Server: Justin, super nice
Salad: took 1/2 hour and tasted like salt & olive oil, not good
Entree: very good taste, however, it shouldn't take that long to cook up gnocchi & pasta
Overall: giving La Spiga 3 stars. Could have been better, due to all the hype, but seeing that it was very slow....regardless of how many people were in the restaurant...I wasn't all that impressed.
this place actually sucks. There are so many good restaurants in Seattle, why go here and pay this much for bland, overpriced, tiny portions?
My husband was excited about trying this place as he is from the Romagna region and has never seen his cuisine in the US.
First off the space was odd for an Italian restaurant. It had more of a bar/club feel and a little cold.
Second, the waitstaff was young and inexperienced and not knowledgable on the menu or wine list. Our waiter was so soft spoken we could not hear him. We were surprised we did not see one Italian in the entire place! And Mexicans making the Piadina?
I will say they have the most extensive wine list and Italian beverages! Now on to the food. I thought it was overpriced for the small portions not much of a menu selection or much that I could eat. I thought it was good, but nothing great. My husband thought the Tirimisu was very close to what they have in Italy.
For the price, service and atmosphere, we will most likely not go back. We prefer a more intimate setting and at least speaking a little Italian with the waiter!
La Spiga is beautiful. The people that work there, the ambiance, the lights, the wood and the huge windows all contribute to great expectations of the food. Sadly they were not met. This is my second time at La Spiga and our service has been great both times.
This is what we ordered.
1) Caprese: Delicious fresh mozzarella with high quality olive oil but rather unoriginal ....
2) La Panzanella con Rucola e Finocchio: This bread salad bordered on awful. It was waaay too salty and the bread was hard, like croutons. The tomatoes were mealy.( i HATE mealy tomatoes) and were SOAKED in the red wine vinaigrette.... The red onion was beautifully cut and was the saving grace of the salad....
3) Tortelli di Spinaci e Fossa al Burro e Salvia: The tortelli initially has a rather complicated flavor that is soon overtaken by a rich Gorgonzola taste...although i don't think there was any Gorgonzola in there. The actual pasta was a little too al dente for my taste..
4) Tagliatelle al Burro di Tartufo: The tagliatelle noodles with white Alba Truffle butter was the best dish. Although the flavor of truffle butter became a bit redundant the noodles were perfect.
5) Tagliatelle al Ragu: Once again the tagliatelle noodles were amazing. But the traditional Bolognese Ragu was simple and bland.
so all in all it was a disappointing experience. I give it two stars....one for the interior and the other for the service.
Five years ago, on December 8th, a short brunette met a tall black haired guitar player at Peet's Coffee. Inevitably they fell in love, married, went through hell, stayed in love and ate at Osteria La Spiga to celebrate it.
Yes, yes, we are "that couple" who do cheesy things like celebrate the day we met as well as our annual wedding date. But if it gives us an excuse to eat at Osteria two times in a year, then so be it.
We order the tagliatelle de ragu and the tagliatelle with truffle butter. Amazing... again! The pasta was cooked just right and you could tell it was made fresh, the hot tea I order came with a delightful serivce of lemon and honey and although we weren't super big spenders this night, sacrificing our usual dessert/wine regime for a tighter pocketbook, our waiter was polite and respectful.
I just don't think you could order something here that wasn't extraordinary.

The hubs and I ended up choosing this place for our wedding anniversary on Wednesday. After work we… Read more »
My husband and I went to La Spiga with another couple on a Friday night, and were really looking forward to it based on all the positive reviews and hype. We were all seriously disappointed.
We ordered the tasting menu for the night. The best part was the first course (a flatbread with prosciutto), and each course was progressively worse. The main course was supposed to be an Italian sausage on polenta and the sausage was terrible - incredibly salty. None of us finished.
In addition to disappointing food, the service was so slow. There was way too much time between each course, and it took us over 3 hours to get out of there.
The only reason I'm not giving this place one star is the space, which is beautiful, and the drink I had - a limoncello/homemade vanilla vodka drink - which was delicious.
Mama Mia, this place is awesome.
First impression - love the ambiance - nice mood lighting, dark woods, the whole place has a very rustic and warm feel. The metal walls that the booths rest against are event warm from pipes of hot water running through them, as our waiter pointed out.
There are 3 of us eating dinner. We start w/ a bottle of pinot grigio. Delicious.
Next we order appetizers - Affettati Misti (Selection of Italian and domestic cured meats: $12), and then the Formaggi Misti (Selection of Italian and other imported cheeses. House choice: $15). My mouth waters... the platter the meats were served on was a huge round wood block with plenty for 3 people. The cheese dish was immaculate w/ a fruit jam in the middle and bread. My favorite was the sheep cheese.
For dinner, I ordered the Tagliatelle Noodles in white Alba Truffle Butter Sauce ($13). It was the richest butter I have ever tasted... I tried to eat the noodles one at a time to savor the taste...
For dessert, I had a chocolate ice-cream w/ hazelnut center, dusted w/ cocoa powder.
For 3 of us, sharing one bottle of wine, 2 appetizers, and each ordering a plate for dinner and each eating a dessert, the grand total, w/ tip, ran about $165. Good thing I didn't have to pay for it since it was a gift! Ha!
But damn, this place is the sweet love of life if you're looking for a romantic dinner out to celebrate an anniversary or propose to your honey... Service was great and great attention to detail. This was certainly a meal I won't forget anytime soon. :)
I understand the menu changes, so I'd be interested in going back again for a different round.
La Spiga you are one of my new favorite restaurants!
The atmosphere was so cozy, warm and friendly, I felt like I wanted to stay there all night. We sat in the back area, though I would really like to try sitting outside next time.
The waitstaff was very helpful, explaining items on the menu that we were not familiar with and making good wine recommendations. They were also extremely patient as each one of us tried to pronounce the names of the food. They were very attentive about asking if we would like more wine and my water glass never went below half full. (or half empty for the rest of you hehe) I love when there is good waitstaff like that because you can focus on the two things you should be focussing on at dinner: the food you are eating and the company you are with. La Spiga gave us that wonderful dinner experience!
The food - the food was delicious! We started off the night with a prosciutto sampler type thing with lots of little olives and cheeses to make some little sandwiches. It was a great little ice breaker for our group (and the olives were fantastic!)
After that I had the mini-gnocchi. It had a cream sauce with sausage that was pretty good (reminded me a little bit of biscuits and gravy though...) By far the best thing I had was the asparagus. It was cooked in olive oil and lemon, and was melt in your mouth delicious! It was so good that I bought asparagus the next day at the grocer because I realized I had forgotten how good asparagus can be!
Key Points:
Staff: Super Friendly, knowledgeable and patient
Food: Delish!
Drinks: Lots of wine!
Atmosphere: Cozy, warm, very comfortable!
Great for: A dinner date, an intimate dinner with a few friends
Oh my goodness, if you haven't been here already, GO RIGHT THIS MINUTE!
Hunny and i found out about it from our favorite show of all time -- Iron Chef America! YES, the chef at La Spiga battled in kitchen stadium, and now the Capitol Hill gem is serving a tasting menu that includes all the dishes presented on the Food Networks' highest rated show!
So, of course, we HAD to go! Unfortunately, they had ran out of the tasting menu by the time hunny and i arrived (8pm reservation--so it seemed odd they had already run out! Too much good press, i suppose!)
The ambiance was perfect. We walk in, and you can't decide if you feel like you're in someones turn of the century home with the quirky dressers and wash stands that house the wine and glasses, or if you're in a kitchy loft in the middle of Roma... high ceilings, wood everywhere, and an open setting make for great people watching, and in turn, great conversation.
We started with the cheese plate (do it!) and the cured meats (DO IT!), shared a the balsamic vinegar salad (with REAL bacon bits, was amazing!), then hunny had the lasagna, and i had the gnocchi pomodoro. was unbelievable!
amazing service, amazing food, amazing setting, AMAZING company... what a perfect, PERFECT night!
