An enthusiastic 5 stars for a lovely dinner here with work colleagues on a Tuesday evening!!
Best mojitos (it's award-winning)! So tasty and gone in seconds as you enjoy!! :) Had the ceviche appetizer - yum! And had the walu fish for my main - so tasty, kind of tasted like abalone - loved it!!
We had fun getting acquainted with new colleagues, and I appreciated the nice service of our party of 6. The girl was so nice and checked on us at appropriate times without leaving us hanging or feeling bombarded. I highly recommend this place, and if I'm back in the area, I would definitely be back!
Note: they add 20% gratuity automatically for parties of 6 or more, take care when you pay your bill.
Finally!!
I've worked in the Gables for about four years and have always been meaning to have drinks or dinner at Ortanique... today was finally the day!!
My co worker and I dragged ourselves away from the office after a grueling day and decided to treat ourselves to a drink. We arrived before the masses about 6:30 or so and took a seat at the bar where Joel our knowledgeable bartender told us about all the drinks that would make the stress of our day disappear.
I went with a Mojito because he swore I wouldn't be sorry... I was SO NOT SORRY... it had to have been one of the best mojitos I've ever had! My co worker had a margarita on the rocks that was also great. The next round was Caipirinias, if you've never had one you have to try them! They're great!
We ordered a standard calamari appetizer, but the sauce was anything but typical, a sweet and tangy molasses type thing. Then we had the ceviche spoons, todays' fish was grouper, very fresh and delicious!
After that we decided the apps tickled our stomachs and we needed an entree, my friend is a finicky eater so we split the jerk rigatoni and subbed chicken for shrimp... it was awesome! Sun dried tomato and mushrooms in a light sauce with just a bit of spice in the back of the throat... we didn't think we'd have room for dessert but we made it.
You have to go even if it's just to try the macadamia chocolate tart!!! Incredible! Thick and chocolaty!
I'll be back... I need to try so many other things on this menu!!!
I would go back again and again just for those wasabi mashed potatoes, and the bread they bring out.
I dont like curry and the curried crab cake was awesome! Also, I had the Hawaiian Tuna...It was incredibly fresh and amazing tasting. We had rum bread as dessert and although i felt it was just so so as I was eating, the flavors hit me as I was leaving and for the whole night after I felt myself craving more. Great service, great ambiance, great food.
I only marked down a star because when i went to pay my bill my server kept all of my change when I was intending on asking for a couple dollars back to tip the valet....I had already tipped her 25 percent but I guess it was just an honest mistake so i didnt say anything.
This is a very sexy place to bring a date. I always run for the Cornish hen. It's seasoned to perfection. I would also say try the Black Grouper ;-)
I was lucky to have found Ortanique during my recent trip to Miami! It is one of the best restaurants I have been to in awhile. Every aspect of our dinner was just outstanding.
Loved the bar, it was a cozy place to wait and enjoy a passion fruit caipirinha while waiting for a table. The atmosphere of the restaurant really sets this place apart. It feels so breezy and romantic. Once we were seated, our waiter did everything to answer our questions. I could tell he really was someone who knew about food and not just someone to take our order. He was a bit pushy with "suggestions" (read, upsells) at times, though, which was probably the only thing I didn't like. If he could just slow his roll it would be fine. I mean, really, when we tell you we're just visiting from out of town for the weekend, please, spare us from going into excruciating detail about the happy hour specials you run every night. we unfortunately cannot fly down for that!
We shared the short ribs as an appetizer. what a wonderful dish, the ribs were perfectly tender and sauce had all kinds of delicious fruits and vegetables in it. for the main meal, I had the grouper with the sweet potato and plaintain mash on the side, and my bf had hawaiian marlin (similar to tuna) with wasabi potatoes. Our fish was so tender that it was like butter on our forks. then for dessert, we shared a pineapple upside down cake, which features coconut gelato with a mint sprig, and a fruit similar to lychee.
I could go on more, but for simplicity's sake, I'll just say that every detail about this meal was just top notch. I would really recommend coming here for a special occasion or while you're on vacation in miami.
I've always enjoyed lunch at Ortanique. Great food. Reasonably priced. Attentive and friendly service. Then finally we went there for dinner. At dinner the staff is rushed & inattentive and the food is good, but not great. This will stay on my list of good places for lunch, but I won't return for dinner again.

The food here is amazing. Simple yet flavorful. Love the different combination of flavors.
The service is outstanding.
This is a must for any foodie
I'm glad Ortanique on the Mile has so many fans, but I didn't really care much for the food I was served during my couple of visits (with the exception of the rum cake, which was outstandingly good). And the prices, considering the nature of the dishes, are very high.
Although the food could be a lot better, the service was very good.
I'd much rather enjoy a meal of more traditional Caribbean dishes in a less-glamorous setting than eat a so-so meal at Ortanique.
I had the opportunity to visit Miami recently and took a trip to Ortanique. Probably the BEST meal that I have ever had in my life. The decor was absolutely wonderful and gave me such a Florida type vibe. I decided to try the Jerk Double Pork Chops, but my friends decided to pick from the Miami Spice menu. We were not disappointed! The food was on the pricey side but everything tasted soo wonderful. I also tried the Crab Cakes..which are a must. The desserts are also tasty. Try the mojito if you go. One of the best ever! The staff was extremely friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. I will go back.
My experience at Ortanique was certainly atypical. My friend Betty invited me to join her and a couple of her friends for a five course meal with wine pairings. It was one of the most amazing nights of my life. Every plate was absolutely divine and was somehow enhanced (as if they could have gotten any better) by the paired wine. I'd share what we had, but I feel that by doing so, it would be unfair since the menu Cindy Hutson chose was unique to that night. When Cindy came to the table at the end of the meal, she offered to do a private dining for my friend Todd and I can only hope to be in town the night he decides to host it.
The ambiance was fun, but my only two pieces of discomfort throughout the night were how my chair was continually bumped (because the gentleman behind me insisted on taking up the entire space) and the noise level made it difficult to hear beyond the person sitting next to me.
I will definitely be back as this is my favorite spot in the Gables.
I had been wanting to try Ortanique for awhile, but the prices kept me away, so finally we decided that Miami Spice Month was the best time to try it! It didn't disappoint! I'd heard great things from friends, and left the restaurant full and happy! The Miami Spice menu changes daily; I had churrasco that came with yuca frita on the side. It was cooked perfectly (my preference is medium-rare), and the chimichurri sauce had a great kick to it. My entree was definitely the highlight of the meal, though appetizer and dessert were great as well. My appetizer was a crab cake with a fruity sauce around it (mango and something else); and my desert was raspberry savion (sp?)- basically berries and cream, also delicious! The bread you are served at the beginning of the meal was fantastic too- we asked for two more baskets! I had two glasses of white wine (not included in Miami Spice) and my friends all tried the award-winning mojitos that the restaurant boasts (also not included)- two out of three thumbs up on the mojito.
The decor is kitschy, kind of like an explosion of French Provencale, but overall, the atmosphere is nice. The service is up to par and as expected for this kind of restaurant.
The only downsides are the prices (some dishes, like pasta, come to almost the same price as the Miami Spice menu, but meat and fish dishes are more expensive) and the size of the meals- they could be bigger. The three courses definitely filled me up, but if I were to go outside of Miami Spice month, I would most likely just order an entree and/or split an appetizer or dessert, so under normal circumstances, I would not have been as full as I was that night.
Wow, amazing food. Chic and cozy place with great romantic atmosphere and with food that will score you points with your date hands down.
Jerked chicken penne pasta ($21.00) - 5 stars - Super tasty pasta cooked perfectly al dente with the tastiest clicken and sauce around. I didn't order this dish but almost ate all of my friend's dish because I loved it so much
West indian style bouillabaisse ($42.00) - 4.75 stars - awesomely fresh seafood - HUGE scallops, shrimp, mussels, clams, and fish - in an extremely tasty light coconut curried broth over jasmine rice. At first I was wondering if this dish would really be worth $42 but given the ample amount of super fresh seafood and how I savored every bite, it was a no brainer.
Chocolate torte with macadamia nuts ($9) - 5 stars - the dessert was rather tiny but it was PACKED with awesome flavor. Rich dark chocolate along with an oreo-like crust and the tastiest macadamia nut filling drizzled with what tasted like homemade caramel. The creation with all the flavors together were awesome.
As to the place- at first we were worried this would be a stuck up chi-chi place along the snobbish Miracle Mile but definitely not that. Definitely chic and hip and great for a date. And conveniently you can make reservations via http://OpenTable.com.
Bottom line: One of the most flavorfully awesome meals I've had in quite a while. A definitely visit while in Miami area.
Mom & I stopped in for Miami Spice Lunch and were blown away by the cuisine! First off I love the decor inside, almost a Key West vibe, very Floridian with the oranges and lemon yellows. The server stated that the Miami Spice menu changes each day which is a great thing so we can return with our DH's to share a memorable dining experience. The service was prompt & efficient. I had the Ceviche del Mar, Jerked Pork Chop with Guava Bacardi Sauce, & Rum Cake...WOW!!! Amazing flavors and very nice presentation. The lunch portions were generous as well. We will definitely be back!
Beautiful, cozy restaurant located next to the theater on Miracle Mile.
The food is fantastic, but please save room for dessert. The creme brulee was the best I've ever had.
Orantique is perfect for a romantic date for two, or a birthday dinner for 10.
It's a bit on the pricey side, but well worth it.
We went there for our Valentine's dinner for a different Cuban cuisine experience. The whole place was very spacious and filled with different types of orange decorations. We ordered the tropical mango salad to share. It came with palm, mango, greens and pecan in passion fruit vinegar. It was a little sweet but refreshing. After the salad, we had to wait for one hour for our entrée's arrival. It could be a Valentine's effect. While we were waiting, we saw next table's seafood bouillabaisse which looked REALLY good. I should've ordered it. Bf had the black grouper and I had the cod fish with aromatic jasmine rice and baby batchoy. Both were different and good.
We didn't want to wait for dessert as it might take another hour. But we were happy the restaurant didn't do special menu on this occasion or mark up on the price.
We stumbled across reviews for Ortanique and decided to check it out with few expectations. We totally lucked out.
Clean, crisp ambiance, outstanding service, and overall, a friendly place (good service and friendly are not necessarily synonymous for me). We started with a few appetizer specials that were very good. I had the bouillabaisse for dinner and my fiance had the pork chops. Both were excellent, though I felt my dish was overpriced at $42.
I've always seen the flamingo outside this cafe as I walked or drove by on Miracle Mile and finally yesterday I went in for lunch. I knew very little about this restaurant but I figured I love the flamingo, the name, and the fact that they're on Miami Spice. Plus my lunch companion is a guest in town and she wanted to check it out. Mind you I was very happy with her decision.
The service was friendly and personable. The decor has a quietly, colorful, Caribbean feel. And the appetizer a West Indian curried crab cake was delicious.
The entree a BBQ pork sandwich was missing something though I could never figure out what.
Their rum cake is homemade, fresh, and light.
I'd definitely come back but skip the pork.
As always - Yelpers' honest reviews were right on point. I had to select a restaurant for a business dinner, and by popular vote on a thread Ortanique was the place to be.
We had reservations for 8:30, but arrived about an hour early to have a few drinks while the entire party arrived. We sat at the bar where Joel, the overly confident, but not cocky bartender, was ready to make us the best drink we'd ever had. All drinks were his specialty. One of my co-workers ordered a margarita (3 ingredients: lemon/lime, tequila, organic agave syrup) - according to my co-worker it was excellent! My other co-worker LOVED her mojito; when the other three people who were missing joined, they too ordered mojitos. Some say you can't go wrong with a mojito - but I'm sure many of you know that yes you can! Not Joel - his mojitos weren't too sweet, or too strong, they were just perfect. As for me, I had the cucumber martini - real cucumbers crushed and drowned in vodka - unfortunately it wasn't good :-( I was going to drink it anyway, but as we chatted at the bar, he made a little extra pomegranate martini and served me some. That one was REALLY GOOD. so I kept drinking the little he served me and set aside the first one; next thing I know when I turn around there's a full glass there waiting for me - super sweet - and he didn't charge us for the first one (as he said he wouldn't if I didn't like it). I recommend the pomegranate martini made by Joel, as it is certainly very delicious. All other drinks were good, but stay away from the cucumber martini.
On to our table. The hostess came to get us at the bar, and escorted. Immediately the waiters were at hand to service us with anything we may immediately need. There were two waiters to our table (main & assistant). Both of whom were very nice, friendly and professional. Our table ordered, the ahi tuna (1), shrimp & scallops (4), and I left my order up to the waiter - I asked for any fish dish except the salmon. Oh my - he brought me a special halibut in Chardonnay sauce - WOW - so good. It came with asparagus and a few french fries, that went perfect with the sauce. The flavor was very light and savory!!
We finished the meal with the rum cake, which was good, but nothing I'd go crazy for. Had better, had worst. But their specialty, I'm guessing, is not the desserts.
It was a great evening full of much needed office laughter and stories, at a great location, with wonderful food and service.
My advice - when a yelper tells you a place is good - listen!
I say, this place.. IS GOOD!!!
The short ribs appetizer was excellent. The mojo roasted pork was good, but I liked the short ribs better. And their drunken banana fritters is a must have for dessert!
The service was good. I still need to come back for their famed mojitos (I had forgotten to order it this time around). I'll definitely return!

Best mojito (although it's pricey) in Miami! The recipe posted from their website:

Ortanique is the restaurant you can fall in love with.
Hats off to the head chef, Cindy Hutson, for perfectly melding Latin and Caribbean flavors into its menu. For Coral Gable's Restaurant Week, frugal diners can find plenty to love with the $30 prixe-fix menu: appetizers, entrees, and dessert rang up at $30.
The appetizers were well done -- you must try the the conch fritters and the smoky pumpkin bisque. Even the crab cakes, that aren't on the dinner special, were well worth ordering. We were all pleased by the prix-fixe menu's entrees: the jamaican-jerked chicken pasta (well spiced), to the pork chops (generous portion), to the grouper (tender).
Desserts were a crowd pleaser -- you must try the mango gelato/sorbet if you're a mango lover. As a plus, on Sundays, a mellow bossa-nova group were playing outside -- inside, it wasn't too noisy, just enough to add to the Ortanique ambiance.
Service was friendly and discreet -- all around five-stars service. I can see why Anthony Bourdain frequents Ortanique when he's in Miami. So worth it.
I love this spot! I've been there twice and the food is always awesome! The steak melts in your mouth. Kinda pricey though, but it is well worth it. This is a great date spot for that special someone.
P.S. I have a picture in my Yelps album of the food I ate.Go see for yourself...
Went to Ortanique for Miami Spice restaurant week and had an outstanding meal.
We started off with lychee martinis, which were wonderful. The lychee liqueur they used added a smoothness to the drink that was very refreshing. Mmmm I could definitely sip on one of those right now.
For the first course, we all had shrimp ceviche that was delicious. It was served with guacamole and mariquitas that complimented the acidity of the ceviche beautifully. Presentation was also lovely.
I had mahi-mahi for my main, which was executed perfectly. My parents had the churrasco which, although I did not taste, looked delicious. They love their meat rare, and it looked like that churrasco was still mooing. I forget what the fish was served with, but it was definitely good.
For dessert, the three of us had the passionfruit zabaglione. It was a delicate custard served atop fresh berries with an almond cookie. I had dreams about this dessert for weeks. YUM.
The atmosphere at Ortanique was also very pleasant. There was some live jazz being performed right outside the front door, which filtered into the restaurant at the perfect volume. Service was very attentive. I would definitely go back and encourage everyone to try it for Miami Spice. Excellent value. Check it out!
I went here with high expectations and was not disappointed in the least. The food is pricey, but I thought the portions were generous. We started with the ceviche and the oven roasted baked brie. The ceviche was fine, but the brie was delicious! We ordered the seared ahi tuna and the shrimp and scallops for our entrees. The tuna was beautifully prepared and the wasabi/mango salsa complemented it very nicely. The shrimp and scallops were excellent. The scallops literally melted in your mouth and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. We ended the night with some kind of blueberry/lemon bread pudding a la mode that was piping hot and quite simply the best bread pudding I've ever had. Our waitress was really nice and extremely helpful and always had a smile on her face. My only complaint was that the one of the busboys kept hovering around our table to take our plates while we were still eating, but I will forgive that one minor annoyance.
I CAN'T BELIEVE I waited two years to try Ortanique. This restaurant is outstanding not only on a local scale, but also on a regional one. Don't be put off if you think islands-type food can't go high end - it can. And here, it does.
Apps were ceviche and tuna tartare with little bacon flecks. The swine added some gravitas to the tartare, which was a nice way to cant the dish. I didn't realize it when ordering, but the two plates played off each other nicely in that one was more acidic while the other was more basic.
For entrees, a friend and I tried the game hen and a the black grouper. It's truly remarkable how the Jamaican jerk-style sauce complemented the hen, with neither the gaminess of the hen nor the heat of the sauce dominating the dish. The grouper was a substantial, meaty dish. An Alsatian pinot grigio went well with all the dishes; I was happily surprised that the wine held its own compared to the melange of spices.
For what you get, Ortanique isn't expensive at all. Service was excellent, noise level bearable, menu selections terrific. This is a great restaurant to try when you're ready for a unique take on both continental and island-type standards. Really outstanding on all fronts.
This was my second time dining at Ortanique. We decided to try out the Winter Spice menu because it sounded so delicious over the phone.
With an 8:30 reservation made thru http://opentable.com, we're gonna enjoy a quick dinner then do the First Friday Gallery Walk and enjoy Art in the Park concerts in the Gables.
Yes, we were sat promptly because it was just the 2 of us. There were larger groups ahead of us but couldn't be seated because a group of 40 started their dinner late, therefore, the whole restaurant was running late on schedule.
The food was great but it was not worth the wait.
It took the waiter about 10 minutes before coming over to take our drink orders, another 10 to finally take our dinner order. There was soon much time elapsed between courses I was already feeling full before the main course was due to arrive at the table. At the very end, we waited close to 30 min for the desserts because "the kitchen lost the ticket", said the waiter. The kitchen obviously was under control because the head chef was out mingling with some friends dining. Once again, the food was not worth the wait because it does not take over 2 hours to turn a 2 top on a busy Friday night.
The best to describe this place is like this... every time I need to close a very important deal I go there and it always happens.
The food here is excellent, you will pay - but will feel satisfied as well.
The menu is great, nouveau cuisine with a twist of Latin.
Definitely try any of the drinks from the bar - they are stellar!!!
Excellent food. I went there years ago and loved it but have been meaning to come back.
Took a client to dinner here, it was a good experience. The food was delicious, and they excel at sauces. My very fresh salmon came with a ginger/green tea sauce that was YUM.
We sat near the front, and it was a little loud. Next time I'd ask for a table further back, or one of the 'booth' areas.
Fantastic mojitos. Really good crab cakes (tiny, but they packed alot of flavor) and excellent broiled sea bass (so buttery I couldn't finish it, even though when the entree came to my table, I thought it seemed miserly). Good key lime pie, but not as good as the slice I'd had the night before at Christy's.
Service was awful, but then again the waiter thought we were expecting a fourth person, and so just never came around until I gave him the super-evil eye. He was very attentive after that. However, he brought one of my companions the wrong salad (and never came around to check, so B. just ate it), and another the wrong dessert. He didn't stop by to check with us, and he took my mojito before I'd finished it (and moved so fast I couldn't stop him without seeming desperate). It was also loud in there. I know some places cultivate sonic chaos to seem more "fun", but truth be told it's about as fun as watching Tara Reid get drunk and sick to her stomach. The four bozos at the table next to us were "businessmen" booming out self-congratulatory comments about their big deals (who the f cares?). The piercingly loud quartet of three blondes and an Asian girl two tables away alternated between loud phone conversations and absolutely blood-curdling gales of laughter at...what? What could possibly have been that funny for over an hour? So funny that their shrieks turned into sharp pointed javelins that flung themselves directly into my cranium after a while.
By contrast, the table of 20+ engineer types were relatively sedate, but you could hear them nonetheless.
The ambiance was actually kind of nice, with some sort of Caribbean-French theme going on. I'd change the sign at the door, though. Looks too much like a Rainforest Cafe` sign (my heart sank when I saw it).
Overall, I don't know if I'd eat there again, but I'd definitely go for the mojitos. They were fabulous, and well worth seeking out.
Definitely one of my favorites. I had the pleasure of meeting Delias and Cindy at a wine tasting about a year ago and they invited me to the restaurant. Their personality came through in the food. I can see why the cuisine was ground breaking 10 years ago and it's still going strong. Great wine list, constant menu changes, great service and and acceptably priced. Make sure to get the mojito, one of the best in Miami. I will be back.
Ran very late because of airport problems and when we got there we were greeted by name(never been here before-must have been the harried look) and given a great table. Food was very good and the service was great. Would go back in a flash.
this is the flagship foodie restaurant in Coral Gables.
high price but delicious food.
everybody talks about the crab cakes, so I decided NOT to get them.
service was great, and they keep bringing you piping hot, delicious garlic sliced baguette.
started with the Jerked Rubbed Foie Gras (sauteed) w/ Burnt Orange Marmalade and Duck Confit over Mache salad and potato crisps -- excellent (better than Talula's foie), great flavor, nice contrasts and texture
next, had the Mojo Braised Pork Roast (shredded) -- doused in a mole/bbq-esque sauce, only wished they had more mofongo (pounded fried plantains) but otherwise nicely done
finally, ended with the West Indian Style Bouillabaisse ($42)
which was tremendous with great curry coconut broth mixed with chopped peppers. included perfectly cooked mussels and scallops, clams and (lobster cooked more than my liking), also included grouper and jasmine rice
this was better than Talula's Bouillabaisse
I see why Boulud had his After Hours show here
We had 8:30pm reservations with a group of 8 on Valentine's Day. Yes, I know that Valentine's day is notoriously bad for restaurants. A lot of diners, short amounts of time, etc, etc, etc. That's why most restaurants go to a special menu. Not in the case of Ortanique. They were bold with serving their full menu on Valentine's day night. We tried a varied mix of things from the crab cakes to the tuna tartare to the soup (excellent Italian Wedding) as appetizers. All were quite good and service up to that point was OK. After that, the wheels fell off. Between appetizers and entrees, there was a "pause" of about 2 hours. At 11pm, we finally got our entrees. A mix of short ribs with risotto, cod, duck, grouper and others. Most were good, but the grouper had seem better days and arrived (on both people's plates who ordered it) ice cold. So, another 20 minutes was needed to re-fire those entrees. Service fell apart with the servers not even checking on things like wine or water, or giving any status updates. We did try some desserts and all were good, but while the desserts arrived, the coffee and tea that were ordered never did. In fact, the tea bags were delivered to the two who ordered tea, but the hot water and cup never materialized. At 12:02am, we called it a night, very tired, disappointed, and longing for something more. The food, for the most part was decent, the service and pacing was quite possibly the worst I have experienced in about 5 years. Hopefully this was a product of the Valentine's Day night, but at the same time, if their operation was finely tuned, they could muscle through it. They didn't and it was definitely not a great experience overall.
Ortanique is one of my favorite restaurants in Miami. I've heard some complaints that the avg. entree price of $25-$35 for dinner is overpriced, but in this case, you do get what you pay for. Ortanique has everything that an upscale restaurant should have - great food, a relaxing, warm ambience and attentive, but not annoying, service. On the weekends, there is live jazz. I've had the spicy calamari salad several times, and the calamari was tender and only lightly breaded each time. The West Indian curried crab cakes are also very good, although the portion is on the small side. The Jerk Chicken Penne Pasta with sun-dried tomatoes, shittake mushrooms and garlic cloves is amazing! It comes in a cream sauce that's flavorful and not too heavy. The Bahamian Black Grouper is also very good, although it was slightly overcooked when i ordered it. It comes with an orange liquer sauce. I wasn't sure how I felt about the Ginger Green Tea Encrusted Salmon before I ordered it, but I was glad I did, because I loved it. I don't think it had much of a green tea taste, though. But it was paired with risotto and asparagus, which I think are the two best sides to serve with any salmon dish. And last, but not least- I had to save the best for last: The Red Stripe Beer Steamed Mussels are out of this world! The dish comes in a spicy sauce with tomatoes, onions and Scotch Bonnet pepper, which is one of the hotter types of peppers. The sauce is so good, the servers will often automatically wrap up any that is left over for customers to take with them, because it is definitely a waste to leave it on the plate. Make sure you have some bread nearby.:) I think the mussels are only on the dinner menu though. Oh, and the martinis, specifically the lemon drops, are quite satisfying! Definitely a place to try.
