Review from Lori P.
We were trying to have as many Italian meals in Chicago as possible during our recent visit and I am thrilled that we found this place! We made reservations before our HILARIOUS night out at Second City and could barely walk out of the restaurant. I had the eggplant Parmesan and SL had some fantastic looking pasta dish. We both had the best experience and will go back for sure.
It was unfortunate that we were extremely full and could not enjoy the dessert menu...maybe next time, right!?
You don't want to miss out on this lovely gem! -

Enjoyed dinner here last week with my wife and 6 year old. We were seated at the window (our request) and were immediately given ice water and warm bread with Olive oil and Parmesan cheese, and AMAZING pesto butter!!!
I ordered the Tortellini soup, it was simple, clean and good tasting. It was ok.
For dinner my son had angel hair pasta with Alfredo sauce, My wife enjoyed Lasagna, and I had a chicken dish with mushrooms, melted mozzarella, and wine, it was OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! Hands down the best chicken dish I have ever enjoyed.
Attentive service (our waters were never empty) always warm bread when we requested it, and for desert, House made, uber delicious Tiramisu. Simply delicious and decadent.
We will be back. -

Chicago institution!
Orso's is the kind of place you take your parents, you take your clients, you take your partner...you take SOMEONE because Orso's is just a place you gotta share with someone else.
Definitely a throw-back to old Chicago and old-world Italian. The menu is fantastic and they do pasta as well as any of the best places in Chicago. And I like that the wine list is pretty affordable (because I may or may not have multiple glasses).
For me the standout at Orso's is always the risotto. When I think of risotto, I think of Orso's. They typically have 2-3 on the menu and it changes to keep variety.
Another great part of Orso's is the location--the heart of Old Town! I suggest dinner at the restaurant and then night-caps at an adjacent bar. -

Meh. That pretty much sums up my reaction to our Sunday lunch/brunch here.
The pros:
- Portion sizes here are very generous so you are likely to leave with leftovers. My lasagna was the size of my head and my husband's breakfast pizza was far more than he could eat at one meal.
- Although none of the dishes our group of four ordered were amazing or something you find yourself craving again the next day, no one struck out either.
The cons:
- Very old fashioned decor.
- Friendly but very slow service. We were one of three or four tables in the place, but it took 45 minutes from the time we sat down to get our food. It was particularly odd because two of the four of us ordered omelets. (Maybe they were making my lasagna from scratch?)
I wouldn't intentionally plan to eat here again, but it was a perfectly fine, if forgettable, brunch. -

Good place if you are looking for a nice dinner out with friends or date. They have a good selection of pastas and food. I'm a big fan of the spinach ravioli. The back patio is really nice in the summer, or sit out front in the street.

This is the best italian restaurant!
The food - fabulous! (and I have special dietary needs that they are happy to accommodate)
The ambiance - It has so much charm. And the outdoor seating (both in front and in back) are just perfect.
So it is only fitting that I met my husband there 10 yrs ago (it was even an employee that introduced us). AND the owners hosted our post wedding brunch. They made everything absolutely perfect for us. If you was a charming out of the norm place to host a lovely dining / drinking party... look no further.
did I mention the food is the best??? :) ENJOY -

It was just okay this time. We came here after many years and revisited our romantic spot. However, the service was okay and food was normal.
I like the ambiance and area alot, however, I think I went on an "off" night. I'll def try it again since I have great memories of this place.Listed in: Top Restaurants

I want fish, I said.
I don't like fish, my girlfriend's friend said.
We compromised with Orso's not because they had fish dishes (though they do have a salmon dish) but because they have one of the most amazing backyards that I've seen at a restaurant. It's covered in leaves and gives a very rustic feel right in the middle of the city, and though the waiter took a little while to get to the table, we were well taken care of and not forgotten on a gorgeous night.
The reason this is a three star review, though, is the food. The bread handed out before the meal was fairly white and non-descript, while the three pasta dishes we ordered weren't anything to write home about. The Pasta Melissa (with lots of seafood) was drowned in red sauce and noodles while the salmon with mango sauce I had was layered with a brown, viscous liquid that was more tart than tangy.
They have an extensive wine list, and is great for a small plate/split a small pizza type of dinner, but in terms of huge meals you can get better food. But you probably won't get a better outdoor atmosphere.Listed in: My kind of town ...

Best place in Old Town! Next to Dinotto of course.
This is a very special place. It has kind of a Morton's Steakhouse feel to it, like it's from another time when men were men and restaurants were all classy. Real respectable-like.
If you go here I would recommend the jalepeno gnocchi and that's saying a lot coming from someone who never orders pasta at restaurants. This is the ultra-rare exception to my rule.
Desserts are also quite tasty! -

Iffy Italian. Reminds me of my grandmother.
Mostly because this is a place she would like to dine. And yes, it does seem to be a mecca for old people. In the midst of Old Town? How in the world....?!?
It's not (thankfully) your Olive Garden, but fairly forgettable in the world of Italian joints.
What bumps this place up to 3-stars is the service (always friendly, always quick), and the outdoor patio area. Though eating heavy Italian cream sauces on a Chicago summer day makes me stomach turn, if you can hit it on a pleasant spring day, it's a great stop for lunch or a cheap(er) dinner. Bring your grandma. -

I think it's the best Italian food in Old Town. i.e (it's better than Topo Gigio). 4 stars for:
1) meal comes with warm bread fresh from the oven
2) architecture inside is beautiful. looks like an old church
3) solid service (especially the bartenders, one of them has been there for 15 years)
4) decent outdoor patio
Try the jalapeno gnocchi, it's my favorite item on the menu. -

I like coming here for lunch. Their food is kind of hit or miss here. I have experienced really great food, and really awful food where I wondered what I saw in this place. It is so cute though, especially the patio! It's huge with it's own bar, and heat lamps when it gets colder. They have umbrellas on the tables and the whole patio is covered with ivory (my favorite). One time I was eating here, and it started to rain, and the umbrella covered us enough that we could continue our meal. They have seriously GREAT grilled calamari here. I highly recommend it. Also, I would recommend to ask your server what is good, because as I said some of the dishes I just did not like. Others, are really good. Service is meh. They never clear the dishes away after the first course for some reason. Well all in all, not bad and a definite must for summer night wine on the patio.

East Lansing, MI
The atmosphere is nice, they have an outdoor section that lies beneath a terrace of grape vines as well as un upstairs, which is quaint.
The servers are polite and friendly and some of them have accents if you find that sort of quality amusing.
The wine on Tuesday's is half off which is a big plus. The wine selection is also above average in my humble opinion.
The olive oil is delicious and the bread is crispy and fresh, perhaps a not too crispy...
The food is where orsos loses stars from me. I find the food to be overpriced. The fumigato, at $16.95 should have been $12.95. The chicken, though smothered in sauce managed to come off as dry and there was far too little chicken at that. It was an average meal all in all.
I would have been more disenchanted had I not had a $25 gift card.
Not recommended for the food, but recommended for a drink and the atmosphere. -

The Food was so so.
The service stunk so bad it would have made an Egyptian throw up.
The prices were cheapish
The patio WAS AWESOME and the interior decor is cool.
5 dollar domestic beers.....the only reason it gets three stars is because of the back patio which has a TV and a bar, otherwise I'd give this turd a 2...maybe.
Bummed, I wanted to like this place. -

Order the fresh Mozzarella as a topping on your pizza! It's outstanding! Also one of the best "John Daly's" I've had with their fresh lemonade and iced tea.

After reading all the negative reviews on here I had little desire to check this place out but since I live so close and really wanted to check out their outdoor seating area, I decided it deserved a visit.
Maybe my expectations were extremely low but I was pleasantly surprised with this place. I would say this place is more like 3.5 stars. The bread you start with is nothing exciting, in fact it's probably worse than at other Italian places. I ordered the jalepeno gnocchi with garlic oil sauce and holy shit was it good. Slight spicy and completely delicious. Either I got lucky and this just so happens to be the best thing they have or this place actually has a menu of good food.
My husband got meat ravioli in vodka sauce and I thought it was nothing great, though I'm not a huge fan of meat ravioli. The vodka sauce seemed to get rave reviews on here but I thought it was nothing impressive.
We sat it the huge outdoor seating area in the back and i would definitely come back just to sit there again.
Overall, good food (if you get the jalapeño gnocchi) and good service. You definitely need to sit outside if you go! -

This place is very "different."
It does not have the universal appeal. Basically this place is not for everyone. By "everyone" I mean "me."
The food is okay, but I would not come back. Didn't like the "old man" vibe. -

Loved this place! Went on a Friday night after work for some patio sitting, wine and pizza. It was the perfect place! We sat in the front because the back patio was full. We had some wine and a pizza and it was the perfect way to end the work week.

Orso's is a good spot for Italian in Old Town.
I like the feel of Orso's...cozy, dark wood, not a lot of space to walk around. It is a bit different than some of the other restaurants in the area. The food is good and portion sizes are huge. The staff is quite nice and very friendly.
I do think that the clientale skews to a bit older (60's..). This is ok with me, because I'm there for good food and conversation with whoever I'm dining with. However, this isn't the spot for the crowd looking for a trendy spot to start their night.
Orso's is delicious, reasonably priced and has a great atmosphere and staff. What more could you ask for? -

Review from Mahsa T.
Some restaurants are all about looks, some are all about great food, and a select few are lucky enough to have both. While Orso's certainly delivers in the looks department, it falls short when it comes to its food.
The restaurant is, like others have said, old fashioned and charming and romantic, with gorgeous tin ceilings and chandeliers and a totally cute patio out back, but I feel like you have to have great food to go along with all of that.
I found the food to be a bit bland as well as overcooked to slightly burnt. My eggplant parmesan had been cooked to death, literally. I couldn't really distinguish the taste of the eggplant versus anything else in there. My friend's pasta dish with vegetables had the same bleh taste, great vegetables but pasta and sauce were again, very bland. Service was a bit slow and prices a little high for the quality. I had been wanting to try this place for years and it's a shame that it turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. -
Review from Kris L.
We eat at Orso's a lot because we always have fun there, they have one of the best outdoor dining spaces around and its on the less expensive side.
Inside the restaurant has high tin ceilings and a piano player but go for the outdoor patio complete with purgula's and grape vines covering the patio and a cool outdoor bar.
For appetizers try mussels in white wine or margherita pizza, ceasar salad is also good. For main dishes go for chicken marsala or pork chops vesuvio.
The red wine flows freely and inexpensively and sitting on the patio is what summer in Chicago should be. -

Ambiance is top-notch old world Italian. Try the outside courtyard in the summer; one of Chicago's best. Food is above-average, traditional Italian and is appropriate for the price point. Unfortunately, the wait staff makes me not want to come back. The several occasions I've been there have been fraught with snootiness or indifference across the spectrum from the hostess to the waitstaff. It's too bad, this place has good potential.

I had eaten here twice before but I never got around to writing a review. I found myself at Orso's once again when my Mom came up to visit on a beautiful fall day. We were looking for somewhere with good food and a nice outdoor seating area, Orso's it was!
Orso's has a fantastic outdoor seating area. There's an outside bar and a quaint ivy covered patio. There's also an upstairs eating area which is awesome on a nice summer day.
I need to go out of my way to rave about Tim's jalapeño stuffed gnocchi. This gnocci is like no gnocchi I've ever had. As my Mom described it "They're like little pillows that melt in your mouth". She was totally right. If you don't mind a little spice (it wasn't too spicy, especially if my Mom ate it!), get the jalapeno gnocchi. I ordered the fumigato and it was great, rigatoni in a creamy red sauce, nom nom nom. My Mom ordered one of the pastas, not sure which one, but she said she was happy with it. Oh, and the bread before the meal was warm and crusty....delicious!
I've never eaten indoors at Orso's, but when I went in to go the the washroom it looked very nice. I would certainly go back for a good Italian meal and check out the the beautiful indoor chandeliers! -
Review from Raana A.
Stopped into Orsos for dinner on a Friday night in early July. The wait for the patio was a little too long, which was fine since it was a warm, humid (hence sticky) night. We ended up eating indoors, which is pretty traditional and pretty, although kinda dark.
After a bit of a wait, we received our appetizers. I had a house salad which started out okay but towards the end I noticed the lettuce on the bottom of the plate was starting to turn a bit brown and wilted on the edges. We ordered jalapeno gnocchi (typically and entree) as an appetizer - WOW. Delicious and spicy, but not overkill. The best part of the meal. For an entree I had bow tie pasta with vodka sauce and salmon. The pasta was pretty good, but when I got to the salmon at the bottom, it was way off. It didn't seem fresh and was over grilled (maybe to hide the fact it wasn't fresh?). At least the meal ended on a happier note with the chocolate Tartufo. Overall the food was hit or miss.
While our waitress tried to provide good service, the kitchen did a horrible job handling our food. Just as we received our appetizers our entrees came out, and it looked like she explained this to the kitchen staff. I think she was doing a great job trying to take care of her tables in spite kitchen's off timing, but when our entrees did come out, they didn't come out all at once and one of the pasta dishes was cold. We sent it back to be reheated.
Hoping I would have a better experience since their back patio is beautiful in the summer, but I would rather have reliable food and service at Dinotto, which has a cute patio as well. -

Such a cute Italian place!
The area when you first walk in has more of a bar feel and the back room has a "classy Italian restaurant" feel.
The menu and wine list are nicely sized and they have half bottles of wine too. The bread basket came with pesto butter...way yummy...like really yummy. I ended up getting the tortellini soup and a side of potatoes with olive oil, garlic, and rosemary. Both were great dishes, and the potatoes were the favorite dish of the entire table. Our waiter Scott was so cool. We got him joking with us and he was really attentive and just plain awesome.
The prices were really reasonable. I don't recall seeing any entree for more than $25.
Great little place in Old Town. -

VAMPIRES BEWARE
Orso's really impresses you as you walk in with its Old World charm, dark wood, tin roof, attentive service, and ambiance. Unfortunately, the decor is more impressive than the food which is really quite average.
The huge eggplant parmigiana was under-seasoned save for the overwhelming taste of garlic. I'm a big fan of garlic, but tasting this sauce was like getting a mouthful of raw cloves - distracting and overpowering. If you're paranoid about vampire attacks, a meal here ought to be all the protection you need. The veal scallopini alla orso was just so-so and quantity of the toppings seemed to dwarf the portion of the veal.
All in all it was an acceptable meal, but nothing special. -
Review from Jenny T.
Chicago, IL
I don't know if it's the fact that summer has started or because I just moved into an exciting new neighborhood, but I just can't get enough of Orso's. Sure it's not the greatest Italian in the area and it's somewhat expensive, but the beer garden has truly won me over.
The waitstaff has been more than helpful and nice everytime I've been there. They are attentive, but realize the meal shouldn't be rushed! I've had the caesar salad, fried calamari (so light, not completely dripping with grease), and the rigatoni piasano. Both were really good, but the rigatoni seemed a bit salty. I added salt on accident (I was in the middle of a story and my hands just kept moving & I didn't notice what I was adding to my pasta!), so I'm not sure if it was my fault or the restaurants. The wine and beer is reasonbly priced & once again, the waitstaff is happy to help you decide a complimentary drink to your meal.
The ambiance is romantic and sophisticated-exactly what a girl in the city needs sometimes! It's not overly crowded or loud since everyone is enjoying their meal. Another plus, you won't be surrounded by guys with popped collars talking about how many girls they got with last night unlike other bars/restaurants in the city! If you haven't been and you're close, check it out-even if only for a drink :) -

Orso's is a classic, romantic, run of the mill Italian restaurant. They can make you a great carby wonderland for dinner. Nice servers keep bringing you tasty bread. But wait, there's more...
The real thing to mention about this place is the back patio. It's one of the best. You know you're just inches from crazy urban wells street, but you feel like you're at home. It's so calm and beautiful, with the vines all around. Fancy, and yet not at all. Definitely date-worthy.
** We just ordered delivery from them, and the fettuccine alfredo came pretty fast, and just as yummy as ever. -

I came here with a group of 4 around 7pm. We were going to go to Topo Gigio, but unfortunately a wedding party had reserved the place for the night. It started pouring right before we got there, so we were pretty lucky since we parked a few blocks away.
We ordered the bruschetta, and I got the chicken in special butter sauce with mushrooms and veggies, topped with mozzarella. The presentation was pretty bad and didn't look appetizing. The taste itself was mediocre, and I was only able to finish half of it before asking for the check. The bruschetta was pretty good, but definitely not the best I've had. It was mostly just tomato. I ended up paying $24 after tax/tip.
All in all, pretty mediocre Italian food at a moderate price. At least the bread was warm, and they gave us balsamic vinegar with the olive oil and cheese. Next time though, I'm definitely going to Topo Gigio instead. -

I hadn't been to Orso's in a few years. Last week, a friend suggested we meet there for lunch. The food was as I remembered - delicious. Made me wonder why I stopped going in the first place! The staff is friendly and attentive, without "hovering". It was so good that I returned two days later for dinner.
As with all of my reviews of Italian restaurants - I had the vodka sauce. It's delicious and garlicky. I asked that the chef throw in some peas, which made it even better.
The back patio is awesome in the summer. You can forget that you're in the city. -
Review from Carol K.
You know that old saying "Begin with the end in mind"? Well- that certainly applies to Orso's.
For my money- just skip the food and go straight to dessert with their homemade tiramasu- creamy, rich and delicious. Couple that with a drink from the great bartender and this would be a five star review.
But we made the mistake of ordering dinner before dessert (imagine) and that is where it all fell apart.
This is "old school" atmosphere with the crystal chandeliers, dark, intimate seating areas and a piano player playing all the old "Rat pack" tunes. It was so dark and intimate- that I had to use the candle just to read the menu. I wish the weather had been better as I hear there is a great patio out back- but it looked like rain so indoors we went.
Our server? A bit clueless. When asked about the meat being prime- she said she didn't know but if it said that it must be true. She read the specials but couldn't describe them any more than what was written on her paper- so we went with what we thought were safe choices . . . .mussels in white wine sauce and calamari appetizers and filet and veal saltimboca for entrees. Well, they seemed like safe choices.
The mussels were so garlicky that you couldn't taste anything else. They also didn't seem to be as fresh as they should. The calamari was definitely the better of the two. with three whole squid that you could slice yourself. As for the entrees- while my veal was okay- my friend's steak was definitely WAY overdone for medium rare and lacked any flavor.
We had ordered a side of spaghetti and meatballs and that actually became our entree for the night but I have certainly had better bolognese sauce in town!
If you drive they have valet parking (shared with the sushi place across the street so be patient) as street parking is difficult in this area.
So if you go- my advice is to start with dessert. You'll save yourself a ton of disappointment that way. And you'll get a piece of some of the best tiramasu I've had in a long while. Now if only the rest of the menu could be that good.Listed in: What's what in Old Town

Chicago, IL
Best part about this place is the atmosphere. Very relaxed and cozy inside, with a live pianist playing. The outdoor patio is great! Very serene, peaceful, and excellent spot for a date!
The food, however, was average, at best. We ordered the portabella mushrooms as the appetizers because it specifically advertised that it was the "#1 best seller", so we tried it. It was drenched in this black sauce that may have been too heavy on the balsamic vinegar. I wonder if it was the best seller because they advertised it that way. I ordered the special of the day, Trout stuffed with spinach. Not too bad. Could've been a bit more moist, but not bad at all. My date had a bowtie pasta with chicken and sausage. So heavy on the pepper and the pasta tasted like it was straight from the box and overcooked.
All in all, I had a good time, with good company and if that's all that you're seeking, then come here. If you want great authentic and tasty Italian food, go somewhere else! -

I like classic Italian. And this place is just that.
From the bottom to the top, this place is perfect for a great, simple, nothing flashy, Italian meal.
Old School in Old Town. It's got more character than most people.
The staff is always on top of their game from my experience.
The bartender makes some of the best drinks on earth.
I love this place. -

I went here after reading yelp, and was surprised that the service wasn't terribly slow, as mentioned frequently here. We were told that there was a 40 min wait for the patio, but we were sat within 20.
The bruschetta appetizer was delicious, as was my meal of salad and grilled calamari. For four with appetizers and drinks, the price was reasonable. The atmosphere of the patio is worth it! -

I just popped in for a "quickie" (Read: a drink and some appetizers. If you thought otherwise, remove head from gutter.) after the Air & H20 show.
Because the experience was just a scratch on the surface, here's what I thought of what I did try:
Sangria - VERY STRONG & boozetastic. Some people are into that. I can't handle it. Does it make me a sally? Perhaps, but that's just my take.
Bruschetta - tasty stuff.
Clams casino - I guess between this place and Piece, I've learned that I really dig clams. (har har. bad pun alert!) They're especially tasty as served here with bread crumbs, cheese, pesto, and bacon.
They have three different kinds of clams on the menu I saw alone, so I'm guessing its a kind of specialty there. If you are into it, this place may be worth a look.
As an added bonus, their logo looks like the Chicago Bear, only green. I fancy he ate a Green Bay Packer. -
Review from Diana P.
One of the best places in Old Town to eat at and the outside area in back is fantastic and very cozy. Inside, you can have a romantic dinner and feel like you're somewhere in Italy.
Pizzas area great and so is the calamari appetizer. If you're looking for a place on Wells, this is probably the best Italian restaurant (compared to Topo Gigio & the other one near North Ave.) -

Came for for dinner last night with a friend - totally enjoyed my meal! We started out with bruschetta which was very fresh and tasty. My friend ordered the vegetable risotto it had a bit of a spicy flavor but was very good. I ordered the talapia special which had fresh tomatoes, peppers, and artichokes served with a white wine sauce and mashed potatoes. The whole meal was about $50 and it was delicious.
The inside is old school with hanging chandeliers and a piano player but it was fun and worth it!
