Review from Jim R.
Classic older hotel that's been refurbished for today's traveler, the (Hilton) Orrington has spacious rooms, big wide hallways and cozy bathrooms with quaint double doors. The hotel is smack in the middle of Evanston with its little shops and restaurants and just a couple blocks from the campus of Northwestern University. Rooms have clean modern furnishings, large work desks and smaller flat screen TVs. The have a decent-sized fitness room with a bunch of treadmills and some free weights and looks to be well maintained. The place also holds lots of memories.
When I was an MBA student here years ago, the Orrington was the place when the recruiters hosted receptions and plied us with food and drink in order to woo us into considering their organizations as the ideal place to start our careers. -

BEST HOTEL IN EVANSTON
for my money anyway.
It is now a Hilton hotel. Very popular with business and Northwestern University travelers.
My room was spacious and clean. Very welcoming. They have a nice buffet breakfast downstairs in the Globe Cafe.
Well located next to NU and a block from downtown Evanston.
A great place. -

Bed was awesomely comfortable. Lots of comfy pillows. Nice-sized flat TV. Free wifi. Lots of plugs for all electronics. Individual coffee maker. Very friendly staff, nice lobby and other common areas.
now for the less than positive feedback:
bathroom was TINY. No counter or other sort of space. They could've made the room a smidgen smaller to make added room in the bathroom.
the heater / AC was annoyingly loud. Since I had it on auto, it would go on/off and wake me up every time. my options are to be very hot or very cold; very noisy or not at all.
The lighting in the room was awful. the overhead lamp was very dark, and I would need to turn on the 5 (yes, five) lamps in order to have enough light to read a book or newspaper.
all in all, for a Hilton hotel, and one so close to a major university and, therefore, quite busy, I was disappointed. -

Great hotel!
My family and I stayed here during a recent trip to Chicago, and had a great time! The beds are comfortable, the rooms are gigantic, bathrooms are clean and nice, flat screens in each room, massive windows with great light, new water bottles and fresh fruit provided each night with turn down service, and accomodating and friendly staff. We had a family brunch in one of their smaller ballrooms, and it was beautiful. The catering was great, and the food was delicious. There are a ton of restaurants and stores, right within walking distance (both chains like Panera, Cosi, CVS, Barnes and Noble, even Burger King, and independent ones). Great time, and very clean (which is really my bar for rating any place I eat or sleep). I definitely recommend! -

In need of a hotel for a visit to Kellogg, I chose the Hotel Orrington, which is by far the closest to Northwestern that is not a cheap run-down chain.
I was immediately impressed by the customer service, as everyone from the valet to the doorman, to the front desk, treated me like I was a VIP. "Welcome Sir;" "Hope you are having a great day sir"; etc... Every staff member stopped what they were doing to check in on my day.
My room was a mini-king suite. Don't know how they got the suite into the name as it was a typical King bed room. The room was nice, bed was comfortable, and the bathroom (while a bit small) was fine for a night's stay. I had no problem with noise or any other issue.
The Hotel Orrington does its best to present itself as a higher end hotel . . . and for the most part, does a decent job. Great value for the money! -

My friend and I had the pleasure of staying here during her daughter's diving regionals at Northwestern University. We had gotten a fantastic deal on our room and couldn't pass up going even though another family had offered to take her.
Posh luxury like I have never experienced in my life. Mind you, most hotels I've stayed in have been run of the mill. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable. Plus it's centrally located to awesome restaurants, metro, Michigan Lake, and the university campus.
The only thing that was slightly distressing was the size of our bathroom. It was very small and cramped with an itty-bitty sink that you could do nothing in.
Otherwise, it's a great place to stay if you're in the Chicago area or visiting Northwestern University. -

I read mixed reviews of this property but have been very pleased with my stay so far (in the middle of a two night business trip). I was given a king room at the very end of the hall which is gigantic, has a huge walk-in closet area for suitcases and hanging clothes, and is very nicely furnished. The bathroom is small as cited by other readers, but I guess that just doesn't bother me much as a solo traveler. I appreciated little touches: they left me a plate of little dessert cakes and a fresh pear (greatly appreciated arriving late at night after a long flight), the desk included a USB hub and full-size mouse/keyboard to plug into my laptop, and breakfast was included with my stay. Free wired/wifi internet was also a big plus, and the wooden shutters on the windows are just neat.

The inconsistency of customer service is still persistent. Front desk is sometimes great and sometimes awful. The housekeeping staff and valet/doorman are consistently excellent and customer oriented. I just had brealfast at the Globe and I was shocked by the unprofessionalism of the waiter. The waiter had a very loud discussion with the hostess in front of me about whether there was a person sitting at the table I was sitting at before me. He then went to the neighboring table to ask if he was crazy or if someone else was sitting there before me. He told me not to worry about it and it isn't about me, but the public nature of it made me feel embarrassed and it was highly unprofessional.

Review from Varsha L.
The location is great, the hotel lobby is really nice, the rooms are nice, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom is small and it kind of smelled like urine in there...
Also the bathroom light is all the way on the inside and its hard to find at night or in the dark. The shower head was nice but the tub was small and narrow. We do have a large tub in our condo so I don't know if I just thought it was small but the bathroom itself was tiny and the toilet was right next to the tub, at least in our room...
I also have to agree with the ac units being loud and the shutters are moveable so you have to move them up so the light doesn't come in. -

Hotel Orrington staff is awful. I first had a bad experience with calling in and getting a confirmation email for my reservation. The woman in reservations said my name was under a "different wedding party" than the one I booked and therefore could not confirm my reservation. She gave me a run around for 30 minutes in which I did not understand how I wasn't showing up correctly in her system even though I was actually IN the system, but clearly their error at putting me in a wrong wedding block of rooms. Then she had me call front desk and the guy was rude and there was phones ringing off the HOOK in the background and therefore he could not hear me and I had to repeat my name a million times.
When we show up on the day of the wedding to check in, we were too early so they did not allow us to check in. We had to a wedding to go to at 3pm and the check in time is 3pm. There was nothing they could do for us so we had to change in the hotel lobby. We literally ironed in the hotel hallway with other guests coming through and staring at us.
The room itself was very nice. I had a nice big room with a king size bed and it was very clean. The bathroom was huge but it felt like it was an industrial dorm bathroom. The shower was just part of the floor meaning that when you shower, the overflow of water isn't contained in a bathroom/shower area, it just drains into a whole in the floor. That was weird. The shower curtain barely a curtain...it felt like you were showering at a gym. The door to my bedroom also did not close properly, you had to heavily push it in to make it close.
I would not recommend staying in this hotel. -

Great hotel all around. Very clean, modern decor, comfortable rooms, convenient if you need to be on the NU campus or in downtown Evanston, and friendly, attentive staff. I was surprised to learn this hotel had converted to Hilton in May, but I didn't see any difference (good or bad) since the last time I stayed here. I made my reservations through http://hotel.com for one night, so when I realized I needed to stay two nights instead, I made a second, separate reservation for the second night. The front desk let me stay in the same room both nights and stored my luggage for a few hours after I checked out, no problem at all. The gym was nice, and I appreciated the free newspapers and coffee in the lobby in the mornings. Only negative is that the bathrooms are small -- not a big deal, though. Will definitely stay here next time I am in town!

Review from Keiko S.
Easily the best hotel in Evanston. Got an important guest coming into town? Put him/her here. The rooms (at least the ones I've seen) are slightly smaller than the Hilton on Maple Street, but they're clean, modern and beautifully decorated. Our parents stayed here during the NU graduation week, and we were generally satisfied with the over all service, including the free water bottles at the door and the polite valet attendants.
Conveniently located, too. You can walk to downtown Evanston within minutes and to NU campus in approx. 10 minutes.
Note: reserve early if you need a room during a busy week, such as graduation. We booked 6 months in advance, and the rate was already over $300 per night. -

Manhattan, NY
A beautiful place on the surface, but the experience was so poor that I would not stay again.
The walls are paper-thin, and there seem to be a lot of visitors for the nearby university, so forget about getting a good night's sleep.
The rooms do come with a nice desk to work at, and a keyboard and mouse for your laptop, but it's important to point out that there is no WiFi in the hotel at all.
I was particularly shocked on my first day of a two-day stay when, after being out of my room since 8:30am, I returned at 10:30pm to find the room had NOT BEEN CLEANED.
I dealt with a marginally helpful staff who, although they moved me to another room, initially tried to make me wait for housekeeping to come and clean the one I was in. When I made it clear that I wasn't ready to spend 30 minutes waiting in the lobby just to be able to go to bed, they relented and moved me.
No apologies for the state of the room, or for the fact that I had to pack all my things and unpack again in the middle of the night, rather than relaxing in my (expensive) room.
The rooms themselves are pleasant, though one bizarre quirk is that they have wood shutters on the inside, and no curtains or drapes. To get any light, you have to rearrange the furniture in order to open the large wooden shutters, and then it's an all or nothing choice of a pitch dark room or a curtainless, privacy-free view.
There are clearly much better places to stay in the area. I'd highly recommend going elsewhere. -
Review from Dee W.
Went to a banquet/formal here a couple years back and everything was very tastefully done. Service is impeccable - valet was affordable and very quick and friendly. Food was fantastic and from what I heard from the organizers of the event - the staff was easy to work with and everything was set up at a steal of a price.
Had a colleague stay here while interviewing for graduate school at Northwestern and I came out for dinner and drinks at the Indigo Bar & Lounge. They had live music and little appetizers. He told me that I had to try Narra - their latest addition to the hotel - which is a new swanky steak joint.Listed in: Chicago Hotels

I attended a wedding at the Orrington Hotel this past weekend. Everything was just lovely! The ceremony was beautiful and the reception was very elegant. The staff working the wedding were very friendly and accommodating. This is a pet friendly hotel and they have a water bowl and a dish of treats at the door!
The food was fantastic and everything arrived warm. This is a great hotel to have a wedding if you are in the city or surrounding suburbs. -

I only stayed here one night when my grandparents came to visit and they booked me a room as well, but this place is swanky. Large rooms, clean of course, and yes, the valet service is quite nice. Not for the bargain-hunters, but I imagine that would be apparent upon first visit to their website or the hotel itself.
The Globe cafe is attached and their food is quite good - it does live up to its price, in my opinion.
Just watch out for the $8 tin of cashew nuts in the room. They're good, but they're not that good.Listed in: Respectable Eats

Hotel Orrington was my surprise hotel after my first ever http://Priceline.com bid experience. As long as you're flexible, bidding is the way to go with hotel booking. While Hotel Orrington was the cheapest darn hotel rate I have ever paid ($44/night before tax/fees) I still feel like I got what I paid for...and would give the hotel 2 stars overall due to serious downsides.
I had a visit at Kellogg and decided I wanted to stay close by so I could sleep in as much as possible. Well, sleep was scarce. The maps don't lie - this is mad close to downtown Evanston (one block) and Northwestern (two blocks) and a popular hotel for visitors to all of its schools. On the other hand, that is much of its downfall, due to the paper thin walls. Tons of visitor groups stay here.
The day I was there, there were high schoolers and a fraternity regional reunion going on in one of the conference rooms, and all the frat kids definitely stayed overnight too. I know this because I could hear them right outside my door at midnight, 1am, 2am etc. I went out there to ask them to move and they did temporarily but I could hear everything. It's not just the guests at fault - I was awoken at 7am by the maids chatting to each other in the hallway and moving around their carts. I read on here that it was noisy, so I brought ear plugs but was afraid I'd miss my alarm for my early morning flight so I decided to just deal with it.
Yes, it looks nice. The room was well decorated - I liked the flat screen tv, the shelves in the closet (not that I was staying long enough to use them) the desk with keyboard and mouse. The room service was good too. The bathroom, while cozy, was well designed and had a nice hair drier for me to use.
However, the bed had terrible, terrible linens. Very rough/scratchy and probably due to starch. So, if you're a heavy sleeper and the noise doesn't get you then maybe the uncomfortable sheets and pillowcases will. Also, I think that computer use in the business center should be free, even if printing is still at a cost. -

I chose to ring in 2011 at the Orrington's Lounge Bar with some fellow actors after our show at Light Opera Works. The Lounge was pleasantly decked out with black and silver balloons, party hats, noise makers, and crowns. We arrived at 11:30 and it was not over crowded and the drinks were reasonably priced. My only bummer? No champagne toast and even though the lady on the phone said they served food until 1am, the kitchen was closed. But it was perfect for a low key meets slightly swanky New Year's!

I really loved my week long stay at the Orrington. I also was the point person for the conference I was attending so can also attest to the service standards of the conference services, F&B, Tech Support and everything in between.
First off, my dog got sick and couldn't be boarded...THANK GOD the Orrington is a pet friendly hotel! Coco was the star of the Orrington that week...everyone was so amazingly friendly and she got so much attention she didn't want to leave! (It was actually kinda embarrassing...she took to rolling over onto her back to get a belly rub whenever she spotted an employee) Oh, and there is a dog beach about 4 blocks away and lots of grassy space for walks.
My room was nice-- i was on the "Pet Friendly" floor but didn't hear any other pets event tho i knew they were there. Good shower, clean room, nice sheets and bed.
The hotel itself is cozy even tho it is pretty large. The location is just unbeatable with all Evanston has to offer at your fingertips. The food thru room service and the conference package was good.
The staff at the hotel was amazing and went above and beyond on a regular basis. They helped me get high quality emergency dog walkers, dealt with my boss's ever changing demands, and took care of last minute details and requests. They also seem to all really enjoy their jobs- the staff was always jovial (I even had a little dance party with some of the engineering folks while hanging banners in the conference room on set up day). I also had a great experience with the AV/Tech support.
In the end anyplace that succeeds in taking care of my picky guests so that I had not a single complaint about my hotel choice is 5 star in my book! A lot of that had to do with my amazing experience working with Alyson Jack - her attention to detail and can do attitude made my whole planning process a breeze.
My only single suggestion is to re-work the gym... I'm 6'1 so low ceilings and working out don't mix. I don't mind so much that there aren't windows or anything...but i don't want to feel like I'm going to bump my head when I'm rocking out on the elliptical. -

My best friend had her wedding here. Everything went wonderfully, from easy room check in and check out, helpful staff, and wonderful waiters during the dinner portion of the event. Rooms are modern, comfortable, and nicely decorated. The shower is amazing...love the "rain" shower head. The beds are super comfortable and the bedding is soft. The one downside is that the shutters let in a lot of light, which was not ideal the day after a wedding celebration! The hotel does allow late check out and early check in, if rooms are available. This came in handy the day of the wedding as we were busy moving rooms, getting ready, setting up the bridal suite, etc.
The ballroom is absolutely beautiful! The hotel wait staff is very professional and helpful. Everyone was wonderful and my friend's wedding went off without a hitch! She did have her own wedding planner who coordinated everything, which definitely helped the whole weekend run smoothly. -

The one thing I will remember about this hotel was the horrible gal working at the front desk who clearly did not belong in the hospitality business. Not a hint of concern, care, or interest in my request for a room. I won't go into details, but the fact is that nothing else about this place was remarkable enough to make me remember anything but the low quality of service I got when I first stepped in.
As I struggled to reason with the person I was unfortunate enough to get behind the desk, I looked at the guy working next to her and his response to my pleading for help look, was to shrug with a "don't look at me" touch and walked away. Not to mention a guy who looked to be a doorman in appearance, but was too busy chatting with his buddy to acknowledge me and my struggle with luggage or perform any duties that you might expect a doorman to do. You'd just expect better from a place like this.
I personally would never want to return because it didn't live up to expectations, and didn't deliver what it aspires to be. Wouldn't recommend it, but realistically, if you have money and are lazy enough that you have to stay at the closest hotel to the Northwestern campus, this is your choice. They seem to recognize that and treat customers accordingly. I'm not even going to do my standard pros and cons on this one - just thinking about this place again got me agitated.
Oh yeah - just thought of a positive thing - I ate at the bar/lounge area downstairs, and the staff there were warm and accommodating. It may have been because I was the only person there at 5:30 on a monday, but I'd like to think it was because they actually liked their jobs and really cared that I was fed. There, I feel better now. -

Like another reviewer said...this place is all surface level stuff and has some problems in the building that need to be addressed (peeling paint, thin walls) ASAP. It is a fake "luxury" hotel. I'd rather stay at a more modest, well-maintained property with a lower level flag than somewhere with little more than expensive interior decorating in a aged property. I don't know much about Evanston hotels, but I probably wouldn't stay here again.
On the positive side...it is a great location and walkable to a Whole Foods, Evanston Public Library, and a slew of restaurants and shops as well as the shore and Northwestern University. It also looked to a have a pretty nice hotel bar. -
Review from Luke S.
The Orrington is probably the nicest hotel in downtown Evanston. It's ultra high end and they have top notch service. They also have a fabulous ballroom that can host weddings or other large events. I have only seen pictures of the rooms, but have attended many events here and have always been pleased. This is your place if you are looking for a higher end hotel in downtown Evanston.

The restaurant here is a great secret with great food and they're never too busy.
The calamari is wonderful, crispy, not overcooked and rubbery.
However, the blackened chicken sandwich is a true showstopper. Always perfect with wonderful aioli.
Highly recommend cocktails here too. -

The Orrington is a very nice hotel with a location close to Northwestern. My room was nice with a king size bed and a refrigerator. The beds were nice, but the pillows were awful. The room was pretty spacious. The bathroom is a bit on the small side and the air conditioner/heater was really loud when it kicked on. Housekeeping also didn't get to clean my room until really late in the afternoon.
The lobby lounge was very nice. A good quiet place to get a drink in the evening. Overall I enjoyed my stay at the Orrington and would probably stay there again in the future. -

UPDATE: Finally got a hold of the catering manager and he said he sent an email on Saturday. Complete crap, as I just checked my email account and spam folder for this email and there was nothing. On top of it, he sounded so condescending on the phone, like it's MY fault that I haven't responded to this fake email about the menu selection (which he already had. I emailed that to him 11 days ago).
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------
This review is only for the catering department, and NOT for a room.
My wedding is coming up this weekend and we booked Hotel Orrington for the day after brunch. I CANNOT get a hold of the catering manager to save my life. I haven't heard from him since March (since I gave him my credit card number), and I cannot get ANYONE at the hotel to confirm that we have this room reserved. I have been trying to get a hold of someone for a week and a half, and nothing.
We have over 50 people coming to the brunch, and this is the last thing I want to be doing the week of the wedding. -

Great place to stay and work just north of Chicago.
Flew into the area for a series of meetings, an evening event and an overnight stay at the Orrington. Management and staff were fabulous. They anticipated our needs and made this one of the least stressful outings I have had in years.
If you need a full service hotel just minutes north of the city this is the place. Comfortable and functional rooms, attentive staff, a solid kitchen and a great location. Perfect -

I've never stayed at the hotel, but met someone at the Indigo Lounge tonight and wanted to share my impressions.
$6 for a Goose Island at the empty bar became a deal when the bartender set a bowl of cajun mix (almonds, pretzels, etc) in front of me - although I think it was a bit stale.
I ordered the seared Ahi Tuna salad from the restaurant - plenty of food, although the fist was more like half-cooked than seared. -

Orrington redid the whole building, and it looks great. They basically did it to cater to rich parents who come to visit their children...expensive restaurant (Narra), expensive rates, expensive drinks, expensive taste. It's still lovely inside, with large rooms for events and nice decor, but if your trip is dependent on price, just look at the Hilton Garden Inn or the Best Western.

My dad visited a couple of weeks ago and I got a good deal on this place from http://hotels.com to put him up while he was here. It was hard to find where to check in at, which involved going down some stairs and finding the front desk off the beaten path. The room he was in looked amazing and I was pretty jealous that I had to go back to my apartment in Rogers Park instead of staying there myself. The only downside to the room was that there was pretty much no natural sunlight for it, so it was really dark if the lights were not on during the day. The staff was friendly and my dad said he had a great experience and would love to stay there again.

Review from Maureen M.

After planning a wedding for 10 months and having multiple meetings with (events coordinator), we expected things to go very smoothly.
We had contracted cocktail hour to be in the hallway and yet it was set up in The Heritage Room. This is obviously very disappointing as we had been looking forward to the sleek set up in the hallway, and the big windows, comfortable couches, etc. This had been the plan for 10 months and never once was in question or changed.
Another very disappointing situation was the techinical A/V problem. (Coordinator) advised us to contact AV guy to coordinate a video presentation. We did so. Having put in about 20 hours of work into the video presentation, and doing what we were told by Michael to bring our computer and that he would hook it up to a large plasma screen TV, we thought we were all set. He told us the charge for this service would be $125.
GUESS WHAT-- come wedding day--- Nobody was present to assist or plug the computer into the television and we were unable to present the video presentation that we had slaved over for months!!! Needless to say this was hugely disappointing to us.
Another issue that is baffling to me is that the coordinator was not present (except for a quick check in once or twice) for the rehearsal. Therefore, I was not aware that he would be helping us with the procession. I coordinated this on my own and it would have been incredibly helpful to me and our wedding party if we knew he was going to be involved. If he was planning on running the procession, which was wonderful, it would have been great to have him there at the rehearsal, to rehearse that, since that is the point of a rehearsal; or at the very least to verbally confirm his role in the ceremony and event.
Finally, during the wedding, our brand new camera and ipod disappeared from our bridal suite! This was never addressed, an apology was never made.
Many, many things went right: the food, the service and the ballroom were outstanding and I would recommened the hotel to others; but, I would warn people to be extremely careful and not trust that anything that you planned would necessarily turn out that way. I would warn that you have to be the diligent one and follow up every single decision with the coordinator on the day of the event. Firm answers and confirmation were incredibly difficult to extract It seems that nothing was written in stone.
So I wrote all of this in a letter to the hotel manager, who called me back immediately and apologized... he said he'd follow up with me in a day or two. But guess who called a day or two later--- ON MY HONEYMOON-- the coordinator!
He was pissy with me and shocked and dismayed that I had written the letter. Wow. So you aren't allowed to complain about how you were treated at your own wedding.
And I had left out the fact that my father and other members of my family had felt totally offended by his snotty attitude on the day of the wedding. WOW, huh?
Again, I never ever heard back from the hotel about any of this. I hope their maid service or room service thief is enjoying my new ipod and camera. Nice little wedding gift-- to be robbed on your wedding night and hardly an apology from the hotel. WOW again.
If you have your wedding here, make damn sure you have a wedding coordinator, the one provided kind of ruined ours. And use the safe, as they obviously have criminals on the staff. -

This hotel is mostly occupied by people coming to Evanston for events on Northwestern's campus and students waiting for their dorm and apartment leases to begin. Some people leave disappointed, but one thing they can't complain about is valet service. It's excellent.
