How does tiny Winnemucca have such a large selection of Basque restaurants?
From Wikipedia: "The first wave of Basques were already part of the diaspora who were living in Chile and Argentina and came when they heard word of the discovery of gold. When the gold rush did not pan out for most Basque immigrants, the majority turned to ranching and sheep-herding in California's Central Valley, and later in northern Nevada and southern Idaho. Many more Basques arrived from the Basque Country upon hearing of the success of their comrades in America."
Never having had Basque food before setting foot here I cannot judge how authentic or how it compares to other Basque food. We came here for dinner - traditional Basque appetizers are brought out, followed by your entrees. Highlights of the appetizers were the Basque beans. Several companions ordered the lamb chops and Basque chicken, which looked delicious. I ordered the beef tongue which came out perfectly cooked in an acidic tomato sauce. Entrees are rather large and can each feed 1.5 regular sized humans. The bartender is friendly and the pours are generous. The waitstaff are friendly, considerate, and talkative. I will definitely come back if traveling through Winnemucca again.
The restaurant is not big, so we had to wait 30 minutes to get spot. But it was full of local people, a bunch of groups and a birthday party. The waitress were friendly and quick - really quick! Not sure what traditional Basque food is, but they had mainly grilled meat on the menu. They offered also daily specials, the waitress mentioned at least 6 options. I remember only Halibut, Salmon and Baby-Back Rips. The prices were OK, maybe a little bit more expensive that you thing in this area, but our menu included a large portion of vegetable soup (really good) and a green salad. I had liver with onions, my wife the baby backs. Both were good. I saw at the other tables humongous steaks. So overall you get something for you bucks!
Huge portions--we ordered one "family meal," as the waitress said that this was "one portion," and one starter. But, the family meal was more than enough for me, my wife, and our two girls (aged one and three) and much food was wasted. So bear in mind when ordering.
Our food was quite good, especially the fries, which were made from excellent potatoes. Great family atmosphere.
Good food in Winnemcca?!?! Believe it or not there are a few good places to eat in Winnemucca! Ormacheas is one of them. I love the table wine when you sit down. Be prepared to eat a feast! The steak is what I always get and it is great! The home made fries are great too! Winnemucca has a thing for potatoes and they do them up well! You will not go wrong with Ormacheas!
This is one of my favorite Basque restaurants. The lamb shank is incredible.
This is a Basque Restaurant and if you didn't know, Winnemucca has several. I like the atmosphere, decent bar up front, nice homey dining room, pretty classy. You get numerous sides, as well as lots of red wine before your entree arrives. Prepare to gorge on all the food, and try to save room for bread pudding. You will not be disappointed.
