In the fall, I like to eat things with pumpkins in them and sugar.  Specifically pumpkin pie and in copious amounts.  I even like to eat the deep fried concoctions they call pie at McDonalds if they have the pumpkin version.  Pumpkin muffins, pumpkin chiffon, well you get the idea.
I discovered a slightly new way to eat pumpkin here, Pumpkin Bars.  Ingenious.  It's pumpkin pie baked in huge pans and then cut into bars or slices. If you get three of them, it's just like 2 pieces of pie.  (You can believe me on these dimensions, I have lots of experience.)  Not only were these pumpkin bars delicious, they add a new category to my pumpkin eating.
Now that I have come to believe this is a great Bakery I will branch out and try more things besides the Pumpkin Bars and report back. It's a responsibility I am willing to shoulder.

I have heard about Orland Park Bakery for years but never knew exactly where it was.  Today it popped up on my mobile Yelp and I decided to stop.  It is currently located in a decrepit mall at the corner of LaGrange Road and 143rd but they are moving a few blocks south by January 15th of 2012.

When we walked in via a closed Randy's Market with construction everywhere I was thinking "This is the bakery I have heard so much about?"  Well, yes little lady it is and boy is it worth the hype.

I selected a Red Velvet cupcake and it was fabulous once I removed the sugar decoration.  The frosty was creamy cheesy and smooth with just the right amount.  The cake was very tasty, lush and decadent.  We each tried one of their "pumpkin" hard rolls to see if we should serve them for Thanksgivng.  Oh, yes!  Super fun to look at and nice flavor and consistency.  My husband tried the pumpkin bars and adored them.

My favorite part was that they put most everything in separate boxes and closed them with string.  With string!  How fabulously retro is that?  So let's see, great treats, old school packaging and they are moving closer to me?

Orland Park Bakery, you have a new convert!

Everything I had here tastes overpowered with sugar. I've had a few different cakes and cookies here. I did not like them at all.

I prepare taxes part-time; since I have another full-time gig, it means I work Saturdays. Pretty much the only perk at this gig (aside from the paycheck) is Saturday breakfast during tax season.

Breakfast is always the same, one person supplies the bagels and cream cheese and my boss brings a huge box of breakfast pastries. While I normally gravitate to bagels, I steer clear after seeing a co-worker flip out because another person ate their special bagel*. Not wanting to incur anyones wrath or get shanked with a pencil, I focus my attention on the huge box of doughnuts and sweet rolls provided, particularly my beloved almond crescent.

Oh, the almond crescent, that's the stuff I tell you. Flaky and sweet, but not overly so; the thought of them makes getting up early on a Saturday not quite so bad. I've had some of the other items from the box too: sugar twists, pecan rolls, apple fritters and long johns. While all of them are quite delicious, nothing compares to my almond crescent, but the apple fritter comes close. Come to think of it, if someone swiped the last almond crescent before I got one, I could see myself getting a little stabby over it too.

I'd give this place 5 stars for its palate-pleasing goodies, but, since I've never set foot in the bakery and have no clue what their prices are, I'm going to leave it at 4...for now. Next time I go see family in the south burbs I might have to take a wee detour, you know for research purposes.

    * Said bagel was completely unmarked and left mixed in with the community supply and no, I wasn't the one who ate it.

My husband and I came here around 4:30 Saturday to pick up some donuts for the in-laws. Although the sign said donuts were 80 cents each, we got a dozen for under $5. I'm not sure if it was because they were closed to closing or what but it was a great deal!

This was my first time in and I will definitely be back. All of the donuts were delicious and I can't wait to try their other goodies.

Off of my beaten path is a bakery worth traveling to find- the Orland Park Bakery. For within these walls, baked goods of indescribable deliciousness are made, sold and devoured.

The odd thing about this place is you never know what they are going to make. If you want scones (and by the way- they make some of the best I've ever had drizzled with the sweetest sugar drizzle) they sometimes make them on Fridays. But seemingly- only if they want to make them that day. Wait in line- get up to the counter and then you will be able to tell if they have made these delights on this particular Friday. Odd but it makes them just that more so desirable. (If you live far away and have a hankering for scones- I suggest you call before going!)   At just 80 cents a scone- they are worth every penny.

Or their variety of donuts will also please those around you with their chocolate covered ones being on the top of my list. If cakes and cookies are your thing- they have them here too- and their cakes are beautiful creations with fruit filling, etc- so if you need a special cake for a special occasion- give them a call.

Bakeries like this are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Grocery stores are more convenient. But the bakery counter at the local Jewel, will never replace the ambiance, the smells or the great bakery items of an independent bakery like this. Just taste one of their scones and you'll know what I mean!

A real gem of a bakery, hiding in a grocery store.

It's my in-laws go-to bakery for nearly every birthday and celebratory function, and for good reason.

We got our wedding cake from the OP Bakery. It was relatively inexpensive, looked really nice, and everyone loved it. Even my picky mother-in-law, who predicted "I bet they make it way ahead of time and it's not fresh," said it tasted just as good as any other cake she's had from there.

PS The top layer we got was white cake with pineapple filling. This is awesome, and everyone gobbled it up. Also great is chocolate cake with banana filling. :)

I needed nice cookies in a nice bakery box to give to someone. Orland Bakery delivered. It was a Saturday and a bit crowded, but the staff moved the line along very well. The cookies were nice, fresh and made a great impression.

I tried some of the cake samples while waiting for my number to be called. They were fresh and tasty as well.

My first time there, and was very impressed!  Bakery was very busy, and had to take a number.  Everyone was pressed up against the counters which, prevented me from seeing what the bakery had.  I had to push my way thru people just to take in what they had before they called my number.
I asked what was good amongst the patrons, and was given a nice idea what to try.  I ordered the Nut Roll and Cheese Pastry of some kind.  Both were delish!  I also ordered Cannoli and a loaf of bread.  Pretty good, but the best item I ordered was the Pretzel rolls.  OMG....to die for!  They were SO good, and something I've never had before.  (heard of them, and wanted to always try)
I live in Indiana, and will drive here again just to get these Pretzel Rolls.  Prices are not that bad either.  Thinking about ordering my Granddaughter's birthday cake here too.

Our go-to bakery for family functions in the burbs.  Old-school whipped cream birthday cakes with fresh strawberries, big iced sugar cookies with seasonal designs (smiley faces available year-round) as well as smaller cookies sold by the pound, several different types of bread and bread rolls, donuts and sweet rolls, fruit and cake slices, and honest-to-God atomic cakes (if you haven't, you haven't lived).  I'm normally not wild about chocolate cake, but the chocolate cake with chocolate fudge filling and chocolate whipped cream is superb.  There is usually a special of the day, and can be anything from Irish soda bread, blueberry teacakes, or one of the several different types of rye they bake daily.  The weekends get very hectic, and favorites sell out early in the day.  Show up even three hours before closing, and the selection will be very picked over.  Advance orders are placed and picked up at a separate counter, which helps alleviate the crowding in the main room.

The holidays are coming, which means we'll be getting our usual order of miniatures (cannoli, tiny fruit tarts, cheesecake slices, petits fours, cream puffs, eclairs, rum balls).  Place your orders early, take a number when you get there, and pay attention.  Pick-ups for the holidays get dicey.

I'm downgrading Orland Park Bakery after I went in on a Friday morning to find cupcakes for a bday party.  What?  After looking around quite a bit for any sort of pastry that looked like a cupcake besides getting shuffled by little old lady customers, I asked if they had any cupcakes.  Nope, nada.  C'mon, a bakery on a Friday and no cupcakes?
Haven't you heard of the cupcake trend where every bakery near and far are making every cupcake combo imaginable?  No carrot cake cupcakes or red velvet with chocolate ganache?  What about a plain old cupcake with swirly frosting and sprinkles?  Ok, I'll take the decorative chocolate chip cookies that say Happy Birthday.  Done!
Luckily, I got home and my sweet cousin brought cupcakes from a downtown bakery (score!).  Thank God because the Orland Park bakery cookies were inedible.  They tasted like something from a Little Debbie package and my 3 and 5 yr. old kids wouldn't even touch them and they never turn down a chocolate chip cookie.   Ick, I passed on these and I never turn one down either.
Listen, I love OPB for their atomic cakes but not all the kitschy, stuck in 1970 bad cake decorating.  The cookies and coffee cakes are hit or miss and I truly think this place is so busy because IT'S THE ONLY BAKERY IN THE AREA.

So I've heard this bakery has been here quite awhile.  I'm sure they have plenty of wonderful bakery goods, though I would not recommend the cupcakes. I bought about 30+ cupcakes for my daughter's b-day and they looked spectacular but the taste was not that great. They weren't very moist, I cannot put my finger on it.  None of the kids were even that into the cupcakes. I would suggest Dominicks bakery for cupcakes over this bakery.  Note: My mom loves their cake and orders it every year, so go figure!

I grew up in Orland Park and my mom used to buy us cakes and cookies from there almost every week.  YUM.  Everytime I visit Orland, I stop in there because their atomic cake is to die for.  Oh memories.... now only if there was and Orland Bakery in Chicago. Bummer.

My family swears by this bakery.  Every birthday party, bridal shower, baby shower, anniversary party, etc is celebrated with a cake from Orland Bakery.  The atomic cake will blow your mind.  Despite living in the city at the time of my son's 1st birthday, I made it a point to order my cake from Orland Bakery.  It was certainly worth the trip out to pick it up!

Wanted to order their new signature cupcakes for a wedding but apparently you cannot have a "tasting" with the signature cupcakes they offer. Not sure why anyone would order something they can't taste first....

I had my wedding cake done at Orland Bakery and I have to say I was impressed. It was one of the very few vendors that actually followed through! Anyway, the cake looked and tasted perfect!
