We've been frequenting this place for over 10 years and seen three sets of owners do a very nice job here. The current owners - Yan & Mei, are just as friendly and pleasant as the previous. And Mei has spoiled our son to the point that he expects to be delivered a bowl of miso soup as soon as he sits down at any sushi restaurant.
The sushi has pretty much always been fresh and clean. Hands down our favorite spicy-tuna hand rolls anywhere. We spend a lot of time on the sushi menu and often sit right at the bar but whenever we order off the Chinese portion of the menu, we are always pleased.
The overall cleanliness of the place isn't perfect, but I don't worry about my food not being safe. Five years ago when we moved to our current home, I certainly wasn't disappointed that it put us only 3 miles away from Oriental! -

Decent Chinese dine in/ take-out for the area. They have sushi too but I'd stick with the Chinese menu. It's 100000000000000000000 times better than the Lucky Inn.

Had the sushi here. Ordered a few rolls for the two of us as well as seaweed salad and egg rolls. Everything was satisfactory. The decor is rather dated looking.

Good Chinese food for a small CT town. We've been going to this place for several years and have never been disappointed. I have never tried the sushi which always looks a little forlorn, but the regular menu Chinese dishes are tasty - esp. the scallops and snow peas!

Best Chinese in town! Granted there is only one other option, but I would still rate Oriental Cafe above many other Chinese restaurants in this part of the state. We stop in weekly for dine-in or take-out and we have never been disappointed.
The menu offers typical Chinese dishes, sushi, and a sampling of Thai and hot Japanese entrees. The Chinese dishes are always excellent and my wife really enjoys the sushi. The fish is always fresh, and for a small town restaurant the quality is surprising and the prices are decent.
The staff is always incredibly friendly and helpful with menu choices. If you come in more than once or twice the owner/hostess will absolutely remember you and greet you with a "Nice to see you again!!" -

Okay, I feel the need to comment and defend this place a little before moving on to the review. First some education, as there may not be a country more misunderstood than China in America. Someone mentioned "real Chinese" food, whatever that is. Honestly, in a country as large as China, there is no unified cuisine, and food can differ from province to province, and even city to city. After living in China for two years, it is easy to see that what you get in Beijing is totally different than what you get in Sichuan (szechuan), which is totally different than Xin Jiang (often referred to as Uyghur or Muslim Chinese), which is totally different than Guangdong which is totally different than Inner Mongolia province. etc. etc. Than you have places like Wuhan that seem to be a crazy mix of different styles of Chinese cuisine from around the rest of the country. Also places like Harbin and north which even start to mix a little Russian-style cooking. As well as traditional food for Buddhists (because they are vegetarian), Tibetans, etc. etc. Keep in mind there are over 50 ethnic minorities in China. So "Real Chinese" food? No such thing! The point is, you need to know what food is like in China before docking it points for not being "real". And trust me, throughout my life in Connecticut and around the country in my 26 years, I have never found food that was comparable to the food I had in my two years in China. Point is, it is all Americanized, so judge the food on its OWN MERIT, because trust me, you most likely will not find real authentic Chinese in your life in the states. Though I suppose it is possible. So anyway, if we judge the food on its own merit, and not based off of some mistaken notion of what "real Chinese" food is, it is pretty good food. Above average for Old Lyme even. While the Hunan or Szechuan food is not as spiecy as what I exp. when I was in those regions, it is still a slight reminder of good times exploring different area of the world. For a small town, this is a can't miss!
