Review from Diana W.
Aptos, CA
Wow...what a awesome place and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
I'm a "W" Hotel girl and tried this when they were sold out. I needed a place where my kids (20 and 22) could walk home from club they were going to and this was within distance, reasonably priced via http://Priceline.com and seemed to have good reviews.
Great location (2 blocks North from Union Square so if you're into shopping this is the place) and right across from the world-famous MASA restaurant.
Room was good sized (2 oversized twin sized beds) and very comfortable, clean and quiet with minimal street noise (big point with me since I have sleep issues). Staff VERY friendly and helpful.
Bar nice, modern and not overly crowded. Bartender let me taste a couple white wines before I decided (went with servers recommendation which was spot on). Extra points for staff noticing that it was my son's birthday (when he was carded at bar for drink) and brought out chocolate mousse with candle and sang him Happy Birthday...very sweet and gotta love that attention to detail).
Breakfast was excellent--as good as W Hotel but much cheaper. Had vegetable scramble and was very yummy. -

Excellent location (about two blocks from Union Square).
The bedding is very comfortable.
Room is clean and spacious
Bathroom has plenty of toiletries (even a shower cap)
No complementary breakfast. -

The Orchard Hotel is a great choice in the Union Square area. We stayed there in May 2011. The room was large for SF. The bed was comfortable and the room was quite clean. The staff at the hotel was very helpful.
Unfortunately, the hot water was out one morning. The hotel got it fixed within a couple of hours and they comped our breakfast that morning. So they recovered very well.
The parking garage is expensive, but that seems to be the norm in SF. It took the valets 15 minutes or so to retrieve your car, so that is a little inconvenient. But they did tell us that when we first arrived.
All in all, we had a very good stay. I would definitely stay there again. -

I will certainly stay here again if they promise to put better lighting in the exercise room! This is a great location 2 blocks off union square. It is also 1 block from the Stockton Sutter garage if you want to save on valet parking. The parking is $40 which is lower than most SF hotels in the area. We paid $127 a night through the hotel website. It is an older hotel that has been remodeled using Green materials and methods. They did a great job! Comfy rooms and free internet. The bell staff was very helpful and anticipated all our needs. Breakfast was good, but pricey, at the Daffodil restaurant attached to the lobby. The lighting in the workout room was the only thing needing improvement. This will be my first choice in the future.

Murfreesboro, TN
The Orchard Hotel gets five stars from us for convenience, cleanliness, and friendliness. The price was very reasonable compared to other properties in the neighborhood--lots of bang for the buck. As others have said, the rooms are large, the bathrooms are spacious, the beds are extremely comfortable, great water pressure and almost immediate hot water at the tap. The rooms were so well insulated that we were unaware of there being other guests on our floor. It gave us a feeling of having the whole floor to ourselves.
But what made the experience complete for us was the desk personnel. Everyone was so nice and helpful. A shout out to Blue, who had the most marvelous restaurant recommendations for us. She never steered us wrong. She was always cheery and shared in our excitement as we related our day's adventures with her. Thanks, darlin'.
If you don't need 40 foot marble columns in the lobby, but appreciate a solid, well-run hotel, check out The Orchard. -

Outstanding location, comfortable beds and nice rooms near Union Station. My wife and I loved being able to step off the cable car after a long day and walk 1/4 block to the hotel entrance.
Staff was courteous and attentive. Their water heater broke one morning while we were there and they comp'd us breakfast while the mechanic fixed it up. -
Review from Orla M.
San Francisco, CA
This place is as good as it gets in the moderately-priced-hotels bracket.
Room: huge
Bathroom: large and well equipped
Beds: good
WiFi: free
Staff: pleasant
Location: SO handy for tourists
Fitness Center: you couldn't call it a Center, it's a room with one treadmill, one elliptical and a tv!
Be warned that this location is up a hill in case you have bad knees, but you can get the Powell St cable car to the corner of the block :)
The valet parking is a bit annoying because it takes aaaaaaaages to get your car, but that was really my only gripe.
There are some cool little restaurants, pubs and bars around the hotel as well which are a little bit off the typical tourist track. Try the Hidden Vine wine bar, Bacchus Kirk bar, The Irish Bank, and the Belden Place area for restaurants. -

Like many others, I too was looking for an affordable hotel for a Valentine's Day getaway from Boston. It is one of the only green hotels in San Fran, I believe. The room was very clean and spacious. The gentleman managing the front desk was very nice and friendly when we checked in around midnight. The front desk also has a good collection of DVDs to borrow in case you want to have a quiet night in.
On a side note, the hotel sits along one of the trolleys, but during busy hours the trolley can get packed quickly. Plenty of restaurants in walking distance though.
I'll definitely be staying here again when I am visiting San Fran. -

Great location, very clean, extremely quiet and worth the value. The front desk staff are friendly but the doormen are the best as you enter and leave the hotel.
I would highly recommend this hotel. -

Bay Area
Great value at this hotel. It was $140 for a single room but I could've easily gotten it at around a $100 through http://hotels.com or similar site but didn't, ohpoo. But I liked the cleanliness, quiet environment (except for this couple gettin' it on next door when I was staying in with my gf), and the quality of the room for the price I paid for (especially the 5 star like bathrooms... what's with my fascination w/ bathrooms?) Anyways, the only problem may be parking but downtown is down the hill and there's a a few fun bars down the block like Tunnel Top.

Davis, CA
It isn't the greatest hotel, but it is perfect in location, amenities and price. Service is top notch, rooms are above average with nice finishings and very comfortable. No flat screen TVs, but free wireless throughout the hotel. Bar is nice, not super big. Restaurant for hot breakfast is great, but a little pricey. Will definitely return. Steps from the cable car. Not as opulent as the "Mark" but much better than any Hyatt or Hilton.

Exceeded our expectations. Very clean hotel with cozy and spacious king room. Great location. Union Square just couple short blocks away. Many places to eat, drink, an shop.
Would definitely do it again. GF and I were very pleased. -

I was up here for work a few weeks ago and stayed at the Orchard Hotel and was very pleased. I am writing this mostly because I tend to only write reviews when I am unsatisfied but wanted to give credit to the Orchard for getting it right. The bed was soft and comfy, room was spacious enough and clean, the internet was free, location was ideal, and the people were just plain nice and accommodating. Even though my room was paid for by work, I thought they were a good value and would come back on my own. I bought some cheese at the Ferry Building and even though I'd already checked out they offered to help me refrigerate it until I had to leave for the airport.
Overall, I was very happy with my stay and would definitely stay again (or maybe I'll check out their sister property ther Orchard Garden Hotel?) -

Forget the fact that I got a room here for 3 days free.
This place was just magnificent (HAHAH! I always wanted to use that word)!!!
The room, though a bit small, was stil very elegant and nicely decorated. The bed was like a sea of softness, swallowing my body and making sweet music with my joints and muscles. No seriously, I was like butter on mash potatoes the way the bed was playing with my emotions.
FREE WIRELESS! YEZZIR!
The staff was GREAT! Any questions or requests I had, they answered it promptly and with no trace of attitude. And even thru the bustle of downtown SF, it was very quiet and comfortable.
Didn't get a chance to try the resaurant, but a lot of places to eat nearby, plus the group I was with were out of towners and wanted to go club'n instead and hitting a all night Jack's later. hahaha.
One of the best 3 nightsof my life. All it needed was for Scarlett Johannson (or Jessica Beal..or even that one Yelp Elite girl ahha.) to walk through my door with a plate stacked with waffles and yes. I woulda been in HEAVEN! -

Originally had reservations for the Orchard Garden Hotel, but I got a call from them the day we were to check in saying that a party had extended their stay and that they were full, but would we mind staying at the Orchard Hotel instead?
Heck no! The rooms here seem to be even nicer. "Deluxe" rather than "Standard," at least by the clerk's terminology. Also, I got a great price for the room 'cause of the mixup. Can't be beat.
Lovely bed, decent not-small-not-huge room, with a VERY nicely spacious bathroom and a huge glassed-in shower! The bathroom was beautiful.
Our room had a decent view of Nob Hill - nothing special but a lovely characteristic view of that part of the city. It's in a heck of a neighborhood and close to just about everything in that part of the city.
I actually parked at the Sutter-Stockton municipal garage; oh-so-slightly cheaper and I am familiar with that part of town so I liked the flexibility. -

I got lucky and found this hotel on Expedia for $85. I live in the Bay Area but wanted to spend the evening in the city after making the rounds at holiday parties.
For a hotel of this quality you can't beat the $85 rate for a Thursday night. Very nice lobby, professional staff, beautiful clean room, comfortable bed, good location right between Union Square and Nob Hill. Only negative was an infernally loud garbage truck at 4:00 AM.
This hotel is very, very good. I'll stay here again if I can get a similar rate. -

The Orchard was great: a wonderful location right on the cable car line, surprisingly large and well-kept rooms, and an enthusiastic and friendly staff - I was greeted every morning by name.
The restaurant downstairs has good food, but not great, and the bar closes disappointingly early. Skip the continental breakfast - it's good for a cup of coffee in the morning, but that's about it. -

Love, love, loved the bathrooms and the big comfy beds! Not really sure why I loved the bathroom so much. I guess because it was huge. Also, I loved the faucet on the sink and I loved the big shower with the clear glass door.
The bed was super comfy and soft and so were the plush pillows.
The service was great. Very courteous. I highly recommend the Orchard! -

What a jem of a hotel. Close to shopping, Chinatown, coffee shops and some decent restaurants. The staff was kind and helpful...no concierge to speak of, but a desk staff willing to go the extra mile to get the information you seek. Our room was clean and well appointed. The bathroom was spacious and had all those things i find important...lots of hot water, good water pressure, a bathtub that drains, thick towels and one of those little mirrors attached to the wall so you can see the back of your head.

Review from Debbie E.
I have stayed at The Orchard many times over the past 5 years (many = probably close to 100). I must say that with the new ownership it's gone a little downhill. But that's not to say that it isn't still a fabulous boutique hotel. In fact, I think the beds are the most comfortable that I've ever stayed in.
I used to get personalized welcome notes at check-in (and, years ago, get wine and fruit plates in my room). No longer.
The shampoos that they give you now are not quite to par, there now is only 1 soap given (hello, needs for hands and body!). The plush bathrobes are still in the closet - yay!
No longer is a complimentary continental breakfast served (or maybe it only is during the week and not on weekends). Also, the wireless Internet connection in any part of the hotel (including the lobby) is either Low or Very Low. This has been consistent over the past few years. Ask for the cable to plug into the wall at your desk if you're going to be using your laptop.
Also ask for a high level room or one in the back of the hotel. The hotel is located at Bush and Powell which means you are hearing the cable cars until midnight and stating early in the morning.
Overnight parking is $40 - not to be surprised at since this is San Francisco.
Union Square is within walking distance - do not underestimate the big hill on the way back (going uphill when returning from Union Square).
Free DVD rentals from their collection at the front desk (maybe about 100 to choose from).
Overall I will continue to stay at The Orchard. I just wish some more of the personalization that made it a great boutique hotel would return. At least the comfy beds are still there...... -
Review from Tamar F.
I had to go to San Francisco for work, and wanted to find a place that was near the office (in the financial district), clean, and affordable. From its reviews, Orchard Hotel seemed to fit this criteria.
It's located in Nob Hill, which means that you'll be walking up a hill pretty much regardless of your direction. For me this meant walking up Bush Street from Montgomery to (practically) Powell, but it wasn't awful. If you have a wheelie suitcase, you'll want to stay on the north side of Bush (even numbered size) since the side of Bush that the hotel is on has some stairs at points.
The concierge at all times was really nice, as were the bellhops (though I never needed to use them). Check-in was a breeze, as was check-out.
The room itself was fine. The carpeting looked kind of worn, which may have just been the color (a faded blue), and some of the furniture was chipped. But the bathroom and linens seemed really clean, which is really what matters. There was basic cable on the TV, so I was able to watch my Monday sitcoms. There's free wifi, but the signal was really spotty - I would regularly lose connection and eventually just gave up. Also, the water took a little while to heat up, though it may have been because I was an early riser and was on the 9th floor (out of 10).
Perks - comfy robes, good smelling toiletries (they have glycerin soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion), iron/ironing board which worked well. They have a mini-fridge/mini-bar where you can put your own stuff in, but it was really packed so I avoided doing that.
Overall, this is a good place to stay. Not super-luxe or anything, but comfortable and clean. -

New York, NY
I do a fair amount of business travel, and I really loved this hotel. There was none of that desolate, lonely feeling that you get from a lot of the chains.
The rooms were clean and comfortable, the beds had digital thermostats and big, squishy comforters and pillows. There is a DVD player in your room and the front desk has DVDs you can borrow for free.
Not to be missed: the crazily soft bathrobes in the closet. Man, I loved lounging around in that thing.
As a business traveler, I felt the desk area could have had more electrical outlets; I had things charging all over the room. I hope I didn't forget any of them. Also, I had some minor trouble with the free wi-fi, though my company-issued laptop may have been at fault, and I always got connected in the end.
Oh, and the mini-bar was so crowded with hideously expensive ($2.50 for a can of soda!) stuff that I could barely fit in my leftovers from dinner.
Still, this is the hotel I'll be staying when in SF on someone else's dime. -

I am counting the days to our next trip to San Francisco and our stay at the Orchard Hotel!
We absolutely loved this hotel! Very good reasonable rates and the location was perfect. Union Square was 2 blocks behind us down the hill as well as Sear's Fine Food and Lori's Diner. There were some really cool bars that we stopped in. The cable car stopped right on the corner. Uncle Vito's Pizza was across the street and on the corner. We had a blast walking at night and taking pictures and videos of the sights and sounds of SF. We got to know the clerk at a liquor store down the street because we would stop in every night for Calistoga Water which I couldn't get enough of.
The staff at the Orchard Hotel were so nice and accommodating. From the first day every time we stepped off the elevator we were greeted by our names and they were always asking us if we had any questions, needed help or directions.
Our room was very clean, nicely decorated and the bed was so soft and comfortable. Large fluffy pillows covered the bed. The bathroom was large, clean and had good quality soap, etc. Housekeeping were very good at cleaning our room. The also have free WIFI.
I would definitely recommend the Orchard Hotel to anyone going to SF. The Orchard Hotel is not as good as it gets, but it is pretty close.
We will be staying at the Orchard Hotel on our next visit! -

Boston, MA
Excellent stay here and not a single problem. I'd say this ranks as one of the best values in the city for a hotel (At least when I stayed).
Quick summary:
-Top quality for a low price.
-Large comfortable beds with a huge amount of pillows and cushions.
-Nice quality wooden desks and furniture.
-Nice large bathrooms.
-Excellent attention to detail. My desk was filled with books on San Francisco, and even included things such as a book on sleeping better as well as a CD to listen to.
-Excellent and friendly staff at front desk. I walked up Powell Street on a warm day with luggage in tow and as soon as I entered the manager came running over to me with a glass of ice water that I never even asked for. They had me checked-in and ready to head up in about 40 seconds. Check out was instantaneous.
-Helpful doormen.
-Good location to get to everything. Keep in mind though it's at the top of Powell St. which is steep and long, so if you have a lot of luggage you might just take a taxi or try and get on the Cable car.
I'll be using this place the next time in San Fran. I really don't see how it's going to get much better for the money to be honest. I've stayed in hotels in all major cities in the U.S. and this is up there. Not a 5 star place but a solid 3.5.
One bad thing: The hotel restaurant while pleasant looking and serving reasonably good food has awful service that is on par with a fast food restaurant. Someone needs to make changes because the staff is killing this place. Additionally prices either need to come down a bit or food portions need to go up a bit. -
Review from Mariah C.

This is one of the businesses I wish I could give an extra half a star to... I can't justify giving it 5 stars, but definitely much better than just a plain 4 stars.
I spent two nights at the Whitcomb hotel, and this was a DEFINITE upgrade. The Orchard Hotel is beautiful. It is very unassuming from the outside, but as soon as you step inside, you know this place is going to be nice.
It is a small hotel, but that's part of the charm. My room wasn't huge, but it was the perfect size, and it was so cozy. The bed was amazing - I slept so well, not to mention I didn't hear ANY street noise the entire night - a first for me when staying in San Francisco. All of the staff is EXTREMELY FRIENDLY, even the housekeeping staff.
Another big plus is that this hotel is just steps from all the action in Union Square - walking distance from the street shops and the wonderful Westfield Mall!
The next time I find myself back in San Francisco, I'm booking a room at the Orchard without a second thought! -

Truly a great bang for the buck!
This hotel was soooo clean. The room was huge (by SF standards) and the staff was super nice. The bathroom was large, with great lighting. The bed provided excellent comfy-ness. If there was a drawback, it would be the lack of lobby. However, I don't generally go to hotels to hang out with everyone in a lobby. Its location easily makes up for that. In our case it was only two blocks to stumble back from our gastro-fabulous, highly wine-indulgent meal. We would easily stay here again! -

Your standard, classy-if-a-bit-generic SF hotel. Friendly staff, clean well-appointed rooms, and very central.

I was in San Francisco on business and chose to stay at the Orchard because from looking at their web site and reading reviews it looked like a very nice hotel in the right part of town. Right in the sense that it was close to where I needed to be for work-related activities. I was right on both counts.
The room was very clean and there was very little noise. I didn't spend much time in the hotel (other than to sleep) and didn't take advantage of what amenities they offer, so I can't really speak to them. They do have WiFi and if you want to access the internet I recommend you bring a WiFi enabled laptop since they only have one computer on the premises available for use by guests: a laptop at the front desk. WTF?!
It is very accesible by public transportation. There are MUNI bus lines that are just a block away going to and from the financial district. There is also a trolley that runs right past the hotel on Powell street. It is a five block walk from the closest BART station (Powell Street). -

A friend of mine stayed here while she was in town visiting. As I helped her up to her room, I got a good glimpse of this boutique hotel and it is so cute, clean, green conscious and the front staff were friendly. The rooms were big, the bathrooms spacious and the hotel even had an in house restaurant that stays open late--- everything you could ask for from a good hotel. PLUS, the location is fantastic-- close to Union Square and in a relatively safe neighborhood of the city!
I think my friend paid around $100 for the night, which sounds like a steal to me given the place was so nice.
Orchard Hotel is definitely a place I'll be recommending to out of town visitors! -
Review from Jane S.
San Diego, CA
A very comfortable hotel.
- very quiet (our room was on the 6th floor on the alley side). The ventilation and plumbing, while noticeable, is quieter than other hotels I've stayed in. I never heard the neighbors.
- the lobby, elevator, and room is lovely. The bed is so fluffy and white, I was reluctant to place anything on it. The room does indeed look "serene".
- free DVD rentals, thick cotton bathrobes, a DVD in the room called "Deep Sleep 101", wine glasses,...these are nice touches.
- I appreciate the retractable clothesline in the bathroom.
- staff is friendly and helpful
- free wireless!
My only critique is that they could work a little harder at being "green". The faucets work only in Flood Mode. In the age of water restriction, they need to convert to low-flow. We tried to re-use our towels but were stymied by the maintenance staff who whisked them away even when we did hang them on the rack. A bin in the room for recyclables would be nice. But these are fairly easy fixes for a hotel that definitely has figured out how to please the customer. -

San Francisco, CA
Could the location be more perfect? Google maps seemed to indicate not...so I booked. My previous homework turned up that this was the sister hotel to younger Orchard Garden...both über green!
Since my guest was incredibly sensitive to (obsessively concerned with) chemicals in materials and cleaning stuff, the green commendations seemed to indicate this was a good fit. Being the skeptic as I am from time to time, I never let her on to the green certifications. Her toxicity radar never so much
as blipped! She praised every amenity from sheets to shampoo.
My stay was lovely. The staff was helpful and friendly, caring to those little details that one only seem to find at a boutique hotel.
Update: I recently tried to book a second time at the Orchard, but was told they were full up during my visit. They did however, have an opening up the street at "The Orchard Garden" which turned out to be cool!
The Orchard Garden didn't have the groovy roof-top patio of the The Orchard, but the rooms at the Orchard Garden seemed a bit more...what's the word...neatly adorned? My room had this beautiful giant vase atop the mini bar. I was told the Garden is newer, though both hotels are very bright and modern I wouldn't have known.
Also worth noting that although the Garden is "new" construction wise, I was really surprised at the lack of any nasty off-gassing from rugs and stairwells and the like whatsoever. You know that sort of off-ish smell in stair-wells in buildings? The only way I can think to describe the smell is rubbery -- anyway it didn't smell like that! I mentioned it to the reception guy who explained they used different concrete and other "green" bits, hence the lack of chemically smelling funk. Right on, Orchard. -

I stayed here last night with the bf after the worst "hotel" experience I've ever had in my life at the Grant's Plaza (see my review to understand my terror). The bed was huge and comfy, the sheets were soft and crisp, the bathroom was clean, and I slept nicely. Valet was $40 bucks which is a bit steep, but you can leave your car there all night and day til 6pm. For $160 (with tax & fees) on a Memorial Day weekend with no reservations the place was great. Would def stay again.

I was pleasantly surprised by this small boutique hotel off union square. Fully renovated rooms which were clean, modern. Free movies. The hotel served a free continental Breakfast daily. Free internet access. Although we did not eat in Vignette restaraunt on the premieses we did order room service:
2 chocolate mint organic teas
1 Icecream sundae with pistachios and whip cream.
2 robes and slippers
eating on the bed
equals decadence. -

here's my personal hotel inspection list:
good location- DOUBLE CHECK
conditioner- CHECK
comfy bed- CHECK
cleanliness- CHECK
ample amt of pillows- CHECK
quality blow dryer- CHECK (none of that built into the wall vacuum cleaner looking type crap)
free strong wifi- CHECK (yes, it has to be free)
large non-claustrophobic room- CHECK
the location of the hotel cannot get any better. it's just right up powell, super close to the BART station and there is a cable car stop right outside of the hotel on bush and powell.
a "lobby" at the orchard is pretty much nonexistent, only a couple of benches and the front desk lined up near the elevator. i really don't mind because the lobby space is definitely sacrificed for the large roomy guest room and bathroom.
the restroom located behind the lobby is very well kept and clean.
while passing by the lobby to the restrooms i noticed a table filled with a plethora of awards, and one of them being the orchard hotel recognized as a woman owned business. goooooo girl power :)
i will definitely stay here again. i highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting sf :)Listed in: golden gate of golden state

We are four adults traveling together and I really like this hotel. Since there are four of us, we got the king suite. Very big, very nicely decorated and room for all of us! The woman who checked us in was not that friendly, which was too bad, since she was the first impression we got. However, everyone else has been great. There was some confusion over our reservation - I told them we were four people, but they said our reservation was only for two, so we needed to pay more. I said whatever they needed to do, but I was completely honest with them when I made the reservation. And, like I told them, we all came in together, we all stood and checked in together, so we were not hiding it. The man I spoke to at the front desk was incredibly nice and very helpful. Then, he said he would just waive the fee because of the mix-up. Excellent service by him! Doormen were very nice, great getting cabs, etc. The location is great!! Near Chinatown, near Union Square, walking distance of a lot. This place really exceeded my expectations. Oh, here are my only complaints - the windows looking out are filthy! It's crazy! Strange. And, yes, the hot water doesn't get too hot. Probably a safety thing so people don't scald themselves.

Love this hotel. The room is suprisingly big (for San Francisco). The room was very clean and the furnishings had a welcoming feel to it. I was traveling for business and found this hotel to be moderately price (for SF) and in a great location. I have returned to this hotel and will continue to do so. They have free WiFi and they are green. The valet parking is a bit pricey ($40), but you are in the big city.......so you expect to pay an arm and a leg for parking.

This is a very average looking spot from out of view, but if you want a great garden roof spot to have a drink in downtown SF, its a great spot in the city. Order your drink in the bar, take the left side elevator to the roof, and you are on. Enjoy.

Wonderful staff and service in a modern, convenient hotel. Nice size and you never have to wait for the elevators, or feel it's crowded. It's on the cable car line, and close to Union Square and Chinatown. Free reliable wifi and newspaper every day. I will definitely stay here again on my next trip to San Francisco.

I have recommended this hotel for years - a boutique experience right above Union Square. Steps from the cable car, but quiet, spacious rooms that are well-appointed. The staff is courteous and accommodating - I've sent honeymooners and business colleagues here and everyone has enjoyed the location and service.
