2 reviews for Orange Line Busway Bike Path
This bike path is in my backyard and I have ridden it extensively from Canoga Ave in Woodland Hills to Burbank Blvd in North Hollywood. Having a dedicated bike path that is over 15 miles long is much safer than riding on the street even the ones with bike lanes. The only close calls you might have will be with distracted pedestrians and people walking their dogs. Stay on your right and leave room for riders to pass you to avoid accidents. There are many Metro bus park and ride parking lots along the path so you have many choices from where to start your ride. If you get a flat or get tired you are never to far away from jumping on the next Orange bus with bike racks of course and getting back to car. Just take some time to read the bike loading instructions as it well hopefully avoid you the embarrassment of holding up the bus. Not much sightseeing along the path but interesting to see how neighborhoods change from one side of the valley to next. I like the fact that most intersections along the bike path have arrow signals allowing bikers the right of way for increased safety. The West Valley section is well maintained and clean but noisy because of all of the traffic on Victory Blvd. The East section is a little gritty and more isolated as it runs through some commercial areas.
My preferred route starting from Reseda Blvd to Balboa Park (4.5miles) and loop around the park (5 miles). When riding on Woodman you pass a R/C Airplane park where sometimes you might see a jet powered R/C plane in the air. It even sounds like the real thing and amazes the kids.
When the Orange Line was built a bike path was added. It is a great way to get from one side of the Valley to the other. And get some exercise in the process. Much of the path parallels the Orange Line and is protected from the outside world.
But there are parts that run along large streets like Victory Boulevard. We rode 16 miles on Sunday and stopped off at the Encino Farmer's Market. Some of the path pre-dates the Orange Line so it is a good idea to have the map with you. Otherwise you might follow some older routes.
