Review from Drue C.
San Francisco, CA
I've been a loyal Optical Underground customer for years, but I am no dummy and I might be a bit of a Grouponesque junkie (yes, I subscribe to about 15 of these damn sites and have a stack of paper discount options on my desk at any given time, what!!??). Recently I was very tempted by a LivingSocial offer for $200 worth of eye wear for $25 at another store recently.
...that is, until I did the math. Did I mention I am no dummy?
After scoping out the competition (because that is what I do) I discovered that not including their frames (which were nice but WAY more expensive that OU) the other store wanted to charge me $149 for basic lenses plus another $125 for reflection coating ($274 total). That is at least $100 more that OU. The funny thing is, when I went into the store they immediately offered me $150 off my lenses if I bought a frame, so the $25 "deal" only would have bought me another $25 off. Huh?
It seemed a little shady, so I went back to Optical Underground where they charged me $98 complete for the same lenses, so even with the "deal" at the other store they were less. When I include the killer frame I picked up for $69, I'm sorry for even thinking of cheating on these guys. Did I buy another pair of glasses with the money I saved? Yep, so what, I am no dummy but that doesn't mean I can't treat myself every once in a while. -

I was lured in by the cute shopfront and equally eclectic interior. I was hoping for some UK-style shades or glasses, but sadly it was a lot of boring frames by LA brands and the usual things you'd expect to see at a mall outlet.
Definitely a cute place to browse, but I saw no serious purchases in the cards for me. -

I just called the place,
wow...what a great customer service!
Honestly, that girl i was speaking to gave me a lot of good information! -

I bought a pair of ray ban sunglasses at loehmans, and they were too big (but since they were the last pair--and the only pair out of 400 that looked good on me--I had to buy them). I wandered into Optical Underground while waiting for my boyfriend to meet me in Union Square and offered to pay Optical Underground to adjust the glasses. A woman named Addelaid helped me out. She refused my payment and spent about ten minutes perfecting my new ray bans to fit my head-for free. She was really lovely and helpful and I couldn't be more grateful to this wonderful gem of a store. Go there for all your eye-wear needs!

Review from Cathy S.
I only wear specs once in a while, but even for the limited time I wear them I require them to be fabulous. Unfortunately, my tastes run on the expensive side and it is hard to justify multiple pairs of $1000+ reading glasses.
Optical Underground is the perfect solution to my champagne taste on a beer eyeglass budget. Marc Jacobs sunglasses for $99. Yes. Please. $600 Lafont frames for a little over $100. I'll take 2, thanks.
I think their entire stock is made up of designer overstocks and samples, so they might not be current season, but I couldn't tell you what the current seasons frames look like anyway so it doesn't bother me. The stock is also constantly changing so you might have to visit multiple times to find what you need.
I appreciate that Optical Underground doesn't assume that everyone is a thief so I am able to browse and try on glasses freely from unlocked cases. When I had narrowed down my choices to a couple of frames I had no trouble securing some sales help to make my picks.
I have never ordered lenses from them simply because I now live in Canada and am usually back in the Bay area only for short visits so I don't have enough lead time to wait for my prescription to be completed.Listed in: 30-Day Yelp Challenge, Bay Area Blitz

Went here because of Yelp, and glad I did. The service was excellent! I arrived, and was greeted, and browsed around for a quick minute.
Then Rhea assisted me with getting the exact lenses I needed, and it was all over. Simple, quick, friendly, and efficient. -

Unique collection of stylish frames. If you're looking for frames that will help you stand out (and you're on a budget), Optical Underground is a great place to go.

This place deserves 5 stars.
They have trendy selections and cheap. They are very helpful and friendly. The service is astounding and super fast. I was told that my eyeglass won't be ready for the next 7 business days. On the 4th day, I was called and told that its ready for pick up.
Now, I'm ready for my road trip! -

Purchased my 2nd pair of glasses from here. Given my coke bottle lenses, need for hi-index and transition (offset astigmatism) ...my glasses usually run upwards of $400 and that's not including the frame.
I got one of their cheaper frames, which was 25% off, and I used their $25.00 off coupon...and left paying under $250.00 for a new pair of glasses with transitions and anti-glare!

If you are on a tight budget this could be an okay option. The frames are mostly pretty mainstream and they are all at least one season old. Still, if you are on a tight budget, it beats lenscrafters.

Got my glasses done here. Costs the same as costco, great quality everything and service and genuine people. Who needs costco membership for cheap glasses when you have this place!
Was referred here by my doctor, great everything! -

Love these guys & gals. Friendly, practical, full of good advice. I've paid $100 for glasses that I needed to replace (& originally paid $400). However, you have to be flexible re what selections they have. That is, they may not have what you want. Still ... it's worth it for the extra pair!

Very satisfied! Found the store due to Yelp, (thank you!).
Great location for public transit.Took Bart to Montgomery station it was a short 5-7 minute walk to the store.
Dropped off my frames on a Sunday was told that it would take 5-7 days for them to be ready for pickup. Received a call on Thursday (only 4 days later)that my glasses were ready. Very fast turn around time. It was nice knowing that the work is done there in the store instead of being sent out to a 3rd party. It is also convenient they are open 7 days a week. Came in to pickup very quick and the glasses came out perfect.
They have a lot of frames to choose from and the price list is clearly noted so there is no confusion. Large size sales section with frames for $20.00. And lets not forget the friendly and helpful staff. -

After reading the reviews on yelp, I decided to see what the hype was all about. So I checked it out. What a DISAPPOINTMENT.
Terrible customer Service, the staff are all just talking to each other, and pretending to work. They didn't even try to help any of the 4 customer inside!
The frames, shades, selection was terrible.... and the prices are not as cheap as other reviews claimed.
Avoid this place at all cost!
Side Note:
The owner contacted me after reading my review. He explained that he spoke with his staff regarding the lack of customer service. Offered to help personally the next time I stop by. Even though I had a bad experience I can see that this is a small business and the people who runs the show wants to make it a better place. Changing my review to 2 stars... and until they show me they can do better... -
Review from Raymond T.
San Francisco, CA
This place isn't for me, but it can be for certain people.
The glasses here are pretty conservative. If you're a clean cut guy/gal looking for typical glasses, this is a great place for your because the glasses are a great value, and the staff is super friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately, I'm more a boutique glasses type person. I like more alternative looks that you don't typically find. So for instance, my last pair of glasses had mesh design with fun angles. If you're looking for the more unique, optical underground's selection is more limited.
Overall, I think it just depends on your preference and what you're looking for. It can be great for some, and only so-so for others. -

Do Good Job at:
Offering fair pricing
Clearly listing costs for different lenses, features on display flat screen
Could Improve with its:
Limited selection
Slow turn around for glasses (which can be understandable since they had to send them out but they didn't call me about delays; had to follow up with them twice about delays) -

i looked up the designer of my new frames when i got home and they were: "Manufactured in France, near the French Alps" . my glasses have quite the pedigree! and they were so affordable i bought two pairs.
the sales staff was really helpful and i'm entirely thrilled with the entire experience. The turnaround time was fast as well, and the prescription in both pairs of glasses is spot on.
hooray! *resounding applause*
ps. thanks for the hot cider! -

I love that I can walk out of here with my vision at tip top shape, my face looks fierce, and my pocket still has moolah.
I love this place. My friend introduced me and it was life changing. The selection of frames and the prices are unheard of from a place that isn't run by koreans or vietnamese.
The folks that work there are totally cool, not the pretentious and snooty folk I was expecting. I got two pairs: one full pair with lenses, and then i brought in my own frames for them to put lenses in. The turnover time was great.... about 5 days, and the fit and quality is perfect.
totally happy that I can go here, and not have to deal with insurance and inflated prices.
5 stars and then some! -

Awesome shop with some of the coolest styles of glasses I've ever seen. I had a hard time finding anything that suited me personally, I was looking for a more industrial high-speed look, but these seemed to be more artsy styles. Still, a very very impressive selection, highly recommend checking this place out if you're a fashionista.
Also notable was their $20 rack. -

These folks do sell recent stylish frames for much less. They seem to offer close outs. This means that they may or may not have a frame in your size or in the style you wanted. But if you can find it here, it will be much cheaper than other stores in the city.

Every excellent review of this optical emporium is correct! I got my first ever prescription for eyeglasses to wear for computer use only - at Kaiser the options for frames were good, but the prices were ridiculous. So, I called my eyeglass frame guru friend Katherine and she said the best place was Optical Underground. Made a date with my husband for dinner in the City afterward and off we went.
We were greeted by Addy as soon as we entered and she basically walked me through the process and then left me to my own devices so I could try on a zillion frames. When my husband and I got down to two choices we let her cast the deciding vote. They are now being prepared and I will pick them up next week.
No pressure environment, lots of selection, killer prices. The ones I got were 50% off the original price, $25 off that with the coupon from their web site, and the lenses with anti-reflective were less than just the anti-reflective alone at Kaiser. So, getting my first pair of prescription eyeglasses that I love ended up costing less for the whole package at OU than a pair I could have tolerated from the bargain rack at Kaiser. Now I may have to get a few more pairs... -

This place is Raaaad with a capital "R" and im so glad i found it!!!
I was in need of glasses, and one day while strolling about downtown i just happened to wander in here. Fate.
So I go in the next day to pick out frames and put them on hold until i have my prescription. Then i went back again and chose different frames. And then i went back again. Glasses are serious business!
I finally selected a pair that i love love love. Adorable harry potter-esque oliver peoples that were somewhere around $160. incredible. Also scored a $50 pair of tom ford sunglasses. Double incredible.
So there I was prescription in hand, in shock from the $220 quote for lenses alone from lenscrafters when they told me my total. Thanks to the internet coupon i scored my sweet ass frames WITH lenses for under $200. Love this place. And the guy that works there was really helpful when i was debating between frames. Cant wait to go get more spectacles! -

I'd read the reviews and popped in once or twice when I was in the neighborhood and decided that Optical Underground would be a good place to try out getting a new pair of glasses.
Whoever is giving Optical Underground a bad review obviously didn't do their homework by reading the reviews or just asking! I'd walked in after driving in from Walnut Creek from my optometrist's office still vaguely upset with the one I saw last year, who completely fouled up my prescription from what it normally would be and was asked by Addy if I needed help. I am also the person who left to her own devices, picks out completely unfashionable clothes and accessories, and I told Addy this. She told me to look around still, but she'd pick out a few things that she thought would work for my face. About five minutes later, she came back with about 9 frames, of which two I liked. Not taking off any stars since I did ask for her help because I'm incapable of doing it myself, and she managed to find the right color when I found the style of frame.
I've been wanting to be wearing a pair of Prodesign Denmark for a long time and found a pair that I currently LOVE LOVE LOVE. The best part of this experience is that when I explained to Addy I've been having headaches for the past year because my script from the doctor last year was completely off and my doctor this year (who knows my eyes since I've been seeing him since I was 11) told me to try and get into a new pair of glasses ASAP, put a rush on my order. I was in on Tuesday morning and got a phone call Thursday afternoon that they were ready. Picked them up Friday morning and been headache free ever since! I will definitely be going back. -

Lots of designer stuff for low prices. Because of the way they source frames what they have in stock changes a lot. That's mostly good but a little bad: there's always new stuff to check out but if you want to come back for something you saw last time it may not be around anymore. I've bought three pairs of glasses here and was happy with all of them. Cute shopgirls with a good eye to help you pick out frames too.

I was a returning customer after finding a nice pair of Danish prodesign frames four years ago; I wore them for a year and half until I got fed up with being told I looked like Ugly Betty. So the next time, I took a different style direction and bought some super awesome Mykita steel frames for only ten bucks here. Granted, the design of the frames meant I needed special lenses and I can't live without anti-reflective coating; so that meant shelling out almost 200 bucks for the glasses. Still, it was a deal for some ueber-hip Made in Germany optical style $$$ frames and lenses for $.
But, they made a weird mistake and gave me the wrong lenses! For the first week, I just thought it was my eyes needing to adjust. But no, they indeed botched up the order! I only had a few days left until I was going to leave the country for a year and they pulled through in time.
It's been almost 2 years and I'm due for a new prescription. My glasses and the lenses specifically have survived through collisions with books, tree branches, and bodies (particularly my own human body from accidentally leaving them on the bed when falling asleep). And they only have a couple of faint scratches.
So the workmanship is fairly solid and the lenses are tres chic, fun, and fabulous. Those factors are enough for me to consider going back. But getting the wrong lenses for your frames is more than just inconvenient. -

Great ownership, great service and wonderful underground location. It truly feels like a place to get a great pair for a great price. I recently got VSP insurance but before I visited and found the perfect pair of "modern geeky" thick black rimmed glasses.
Once you find a pair that works, they walk you through the process step by step and you're out the door -

Despite my earlier review, my coworker and i went back here AGAIN since Optical Underground had the cheapest frames among the other stores. And yet AGAIN, no one bothered to help us the entire 30 minutes; we ended up when leaving two girls came in who started looking at frames and not 5 minutes of being in the store the clerk came over to greet them and asked them if they needed any help?
Shady! This is the last time that I'll be going here. I give them 0 stars.1 Previous Review: Show all »

BEST PLACE FOR GLASSES EVER!!! That is if you're into funky frames. They have a bunch of designer frames but older styles, so they're discounted. They have a wide range of styles. They carry Oliver Peoples, cool plastic styles, and a bunch of Euro trash looking ones. Most of the frames are in cases that are open already so you can just grab a pair and try them on. The staff is friendly, you can ask them for their opinion on frames. I found the best and my most favorite pair of frames for $60. It's not a fancy name brand but the style suited me perfectly. Plus the lenses, I think it came out to about $120-150. Tell your friends about this place but not too many, I don't want my secret to be known. Then everyone will be trying to look like me trying to look like the Asian Lisa Loeb.
Don't come here with your pupils dilated (like I did)! -

Optical Underground is like the Nordstrom Rack or Off Saks of Eyeglass shops. They carry overstocked or out-of-season designer eyewear and price them at huge discounts. You'll find everything from Oliver Peoples to Gucci. Myopia can be stylish! The selection of frames is huge, and the prices of lenses are very competitive.
The best part? All display cases are unlocked! You can help yourself and try on as many eyeglasses as you want. Those of you who have shopped for eyeglasses know how uncomfortable it can be when a salesperson is required to assist you on each and every pair you want to try on. Then seventy pairs and two hours later, you end up leaving and feeling guilty for not making a purchase. At Optical Underground, you shop for eyeglasses the same way you'd shop for a shirt at Nordstrom. Easy! -
Review from Kathryn E.

Every year, I inch a little bit closer to having the worst vision possible. I have the kind of glasses people put on to "see how they look" on themselves, and then quickly realize how distorted the world looks through a pair of coke bottles. If I want to avoid that whole magnified precious moments eyes look, I am relegated to paying top dollar for the thinnest possible lenses. What can I say? I'm vain and like to attract people, not scare them away.
I have to say, I read Bella's review, and think she must not have purchased glasses and/or good lenses before, because no matter what kind of deal you can sway on a set of frames, it's always the lenses that inflate the cost by a longshot. $99 for lenses is NOT NOT NOT expensive. I have been wearing glasses since 2nd grade (my first pair were Nintendo brand, no lie). I know how pricey these things can get.
Glasses aren't the greatest impulse buy since they're usually non-returnable, so when it came time to invest in a new pair of glasses with an up-to-date prescription, I researched my options exhaustively. I found websites where I could get a pair of designer frames for $60-$100, but no matter which way I sliced the pie, the lenses I needed would still cost 2-3 times the price of my frames, and I wouldn't even get to size them or try them on beforehand. I realized that while I could probably save a pretty penny ordering online, I really needed to try things on first.
Optical Underground is quite literally underground, with a "Mind the Gap" message written on the steps down to the showroom. I was drawn in by the dance music and the funky glittery glasses in the display cases by the door, but thankfully, they had a pretty wide selection, from the wacky "personality" styled glasses, to the chic designer frames like Tom Ford and Gucci.
Here's the deal with Optical Underground that I didn't realize: while their claim to fame is discount prices on designer frames, the frames they offer go down in price for every month they sit on the shelf, and if you're a first time buyer, they'll give you a 10% discount on your first frames.
I ended up choosing 3 different frames that I liked, and had the rep there help me narrow it down to two. Though I only planned to purchase one pair of glasses, I really couldn't beat the fact that one pair of Bjorn frames was only going to cost me $10, so I decided to bite the bullet and get a spare pair. I ended up paying $600 for 2 designer glasses that without a doubt would have cost me $800+ together. You can't get cheaper rates online, or anywhere else that I'm aware of where you can actually walk in and try things on.
I was really happy with the service and would definitely come here again. My boyfriend was so impressed, he's buying his next pair here next month, as a matter of fact :). -

I popped into OU today. I am always on the look out for cool cheeter glasses and they never fail at having the biggest selection.
I found a whole wall completely reduced to $19.00 and in every strength.
Extremely cute styles and colors.

I never needed glasses before last year, and I was ASTONISHED to find out how much they cost! I looked at frames at the UC clinic and Kaiser, and pretty much figured I'd have to find some cute-ish ones at the Salvation Army. I mean, yeesh!
I read the reviews of OU, but had my doubts. I was pleasantly surprised that they actually had nice stuff for reasonable prices. I ended up with gorgeous frames for like 1/5 of what the Cal clinic was charging. Nice people there - they asked if I needed help, then left me alone for the next hour or two, while I tried on every pair in the store and agonized over which looked best (hey, they're my first pair).
The only thing is that underground, surrounded by the spotlights and funky frames, you can start to go a little insane in a "why, these enormous square white-and-red frames look GREAT on me!" way. Bring a friend. -

I like to support private businesses. They have great customer service and answered many of my questions. Very knowledgeable...
Many choices and brands to choose from at great prices. You will definitely walk out feeling great from saving yourself so much money. They also fixed my old glasses free of charge (it was lopsided, I abuse my stuff, so I am sure it happened when I sat on it accidentally some time ago!) -

If you need frames, you should go here. The people working there let you browse without bugging you, and then when you ask for help -- they've got tons of useful suggestions.
Even though the store has the deep discounts, you don't feel like you're in a Ross. Everything is organized, spacious, and just awesome.
FYI if you want some crazy frames, they've got a $10 wall that will blow your mind. -

I went with my fiancée and we had high expectations--every time we asked someone where they got hteir awesome glasses, this was always the place they named.
They definitely had a great selection that ranged from trendy to eclectic but for some reason, nothing clicked for us. There were a few acceptable candidates but maybe it just depends on your luck of the draw. It is an outlet after all.
The prices, btw, are ridiculously cheap. So much so that even though I wanted a VSP provider (which, btw, they're not), their prices were lower than a normal place after the VSP deduction. -

First let me preface this review by saying that I have 14 pairs of glasses. Or at least, I had 14 pairs when I walked into Opitcal Underground. So I do know a little bit about shopping for eyeglasses!
I went into the store and after about 5 minutes of browsing, was greeted by a sales person. I told him that I was trying to find somethng that was different than my current 14 pairs (meaning: leave me alone to browse). He said a few more things, and left me to my business.
I tried on at least 100 pairs of glasses. They have a fantastic mirror that has a camera in it. You can take up to 4 pictures for each "round", turn the mirror around, and see the pictures played back on a video screen.. either separately or all 4 on the same screen. This can help you to 1.) see the glasses on your face in different angles or 2.) compare up to 4 different frames at a time to see which looks best. This is fantastic!
Every display case is open, so you can browse at your leisure. They don't follow you around, but are very attentive when you have a question. Their selection is fabulous, and they have all kinds of unique and colorful glasses, including things that I have never seen before.
After a long, arduous selection process, I narrowed it down to one pair. I took it up to the counter. For the super stylish two-tone metal frames, with polycarb lenses, with anti-reflective coating, my cost was $216. Can you belive that!? Oh, and that includes scratch-resistance too. I had not dreamed that it would be so inexpensive!
I felt obligated to go back to re-visit the frames that didn't make the final cut, and I chose another pair. This frame had been in the store since November, so it was 75% off. (The frame was $34!!!). The longer the frames are in the store, the cheaper they get. They even have a $10 frame rack! With the same polycarb/antireflect/scratchproof lenses, this pair came to $165. What!?? $165? Okay, that means that I have to go get that third pair that I wanted. That pair was $137!!!
All in all, I spent $518 on three (count 'em), THREE pairs of glasses. I have spent this much on just one pair. And they are hip, funky glasses.
The service was fantastic. Three different sales people struck up conversations with me and provided input into the final selections. And yes, they did say no to two of my choices, which is refreshing. I bought my 3rd pick up to the counter to purchase it, and the guy told me that it was a little to wide for my face. Thanks, buddy! I got the 4th pick, which actually looked better.
Overall, highly recommended. I can write this review now because I already horded the inexpensive glasses that I wanted for myself! Heh heh heh. -

Last Wednesday, went down to Optical Underground to select a pair of eyeglasses. And, being one that always wears contact lenses, I knew selecting a frame would be tough. But with the help of the friendly staff, I was in and out in less than 10 minutes with my order for eyeglasses. And, three days later, I got a call from Optical Underground advising me that my glasses were ready to pick up.
I got to admit I love my eyeglasses and they are so comfortable. I'm not into the "designer" label but like the other reviewers have commented, there are plenty of designer brands. So, if you want some trendy, unique or just good-looking glasses, check them out.
Also, go to their website and click on the link for "Underground Special" and printout their $25.00 coupon.
