I love Opa, Opa. This is a frequent restaurant choice of mine because it has a wide variety of food, it's freshly prepared, and the staff is always friendly.
Some of my favorite dishes are the Aegean Sea Spinach Salad, (although a few times it's had a little bit too much dressing), the "Little of this and Little of That" salad trio (perfect for summer outside on their patio), the Pastitso (warm and delicious for cold months) and the Garlic Chicken Pita (watch out for later!)
I really wanted to like this place. I was like "DoooooD, i want some Opa!" So i came here for a late lunch. I always try weird food. My friend always eats the "normal" food. Ordering randomly, we get some lamb and chicken. The food was not that great. :( I was very dissapointed. It was dry dry, not just dry. :( The price was sorta on the more expensive side.
I don't think i would come again.
Pros: Greek Food :) Location
Cons: Food :( Price.
Stars: 2 Flat
Nice, but expensive Greek food in a bistro setting. You get what you pay for so don't expect any bargains.
Compared to the Greek Village, about a mile away, I would rather eat here than pay for table service, upgraded tenant improvements and bland food.
I like this place and I like Phil and Mary Anne, the owners. Wish they would open one up in Folsom, CA.
One of the best greek restaurants hands down. Very inviting. Great price, Great staff. Recommend to come and experience the Gyro Platter.
Clean, good quality, fast, but a tad pricey.
The best Greek food in town. The Tzakziki is out of this world and the pita bread is soft and delicious. The Spanikopita is great (not as good as my moms, but that's hard to beat anyways) The hummus is so fresh it makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The lamb is wonderful, and the Patitso is to dye for. If anyone hasn't experienced good Greek food, Opa! Opa! should be your first stop! Out of this world! And Sweethearts next door has some tasty deserts, and their Baklava is mouth watering!
It's cheap, and the food is ok. Some dishes are pretty good (like the grilled salmon and the lamb)... but the falafel, hummus, and tzaziki were just ok.
Staff is friendly, food comes out fast, and there is a water with lemon station, so you don't have to ask. Very kid firendly too.
Mmmm.... Delicious lol I've always seen this place as I drive around Sac State area so today I decided to go there. I ordered a Gyro and a side of orzo pasta salad. For around $11 I was pleased with my meal.
As I bit into the Gyro I closed my eyes and took a deep breath with delight. It was a literal explosion of flavor in my mouth the onions were thinly sliced and there was a good amount of meat the tomatoes also added nice bursts of flavor. I expected a sort of lettuce on it but I was happy with what they served.
The orozo Salad was very good they had whole kalamata olives, herbs, artichokes it was a very delicious blend the salty kalamata olives and the sweet red tomatoes really worked and at the time inspired me to make something so light and delicious.
Overal I had a great experience and I would gladly go back again the next time I'm at sac State.
Very Good! I had the Gyro, meat was super yumm!
Can't a girl get a decent gyro in this town? Maybe I'm just a spoiled LA girl, but sheesh.
I knew this place was trouble when I walked in and there wasn't a proper gyro maker in sight.
I got the spanakopita and the garlic chicken gyro. My bf got the gyro plate. My chicken was cooked properly, which is why the over bearing charcoal taste made no sense. The menu boasted of the amazing garlicy-ness of my sandwich. Utter lies. I couldn't even taste it. The spanakopita wasn't bad, just on the dry side.
My bf's gyro plate was terrible. The meat was awful and dry. Even my dog wouldn't eat it.
I'm still searching for a proper gyro in Sacramento. Let me know if anyone else finds one.
The owner scares me, but the food is good. I recommend the chicken pita and hummus, and my friend loves the gyros.
Bring a sweater or jacket if you eat there; it's a bit drafty.
A real family establishment!
I went here on the recommendation of a friend and I love greek food so it didn't take much encouragement. I wasn't dissapointed. As soon as we walked in the owner greeted us and asked us if it was our first visit. (I figure he knew I wasn't a regular) and then were patient while we figured out what we were ordering. You order at the counter then sit down and they bring it to you, similar to how Jack's is set up.
I got the gyro plate ($6.99) and it was a ton of food! The tzatziki was great and the lamb was so tender and flavorful
Consistently good, healthy food. The salmon is one of the best on their menu. Sweeties has great deserts if you have room left over.
As an East Sac resident I've eaten at Opa Opa numerous times and to be honest this is one of occasions where the Yelp rating system isn't sufficient to rate the place and as such the score needs to be broken down...
FOOD 2.5 stars. The Greek/Mediterranean food is average right down the middle. You've got outliers on each end of the spectrum (Gyro and salads are above average and the Kabobs and Pastitso are on the other end of the spectrum) but overall if you've eaten much Greek food you've certainly had better and you've certainly had worse. Salad's are a pretty safe bet, anything which is grilled (it's usually done to order) may or may not be overcooked. Another thing is the food often seems to be either over or under spiced. I really think one of the reasons the food is so inconsistent is the help which brings me to my next point.
STAFF: 1.5 stars. The staff is the most inconsistent part of OPA OPA and I think it's fair to say that it affects their food. Now most of the folks working her appear to be in high school and as such they tend to goof off quite a bit if Phil (owner) isn't around to keep them on the ball. I have observed a lot of confusion in the kitchen. (it's open to the dinning area) Botched orders, lots of yelling back and forth, some rather foul language and so on.
While the staffs influence on the quality of the food is debatable their effect on service isn't and that's why they get such a low score. They're just down right slow regardless of whether or not they're busy. Not that I'm one of those people who expects people to await my command but they tend to take "I'm not ready to order yet, I'm still trying to decide." as permission to disappear into the back or go do something else for about 10 minutes. As with the food the service is hit or miss; unless of course Phil is present.
Opa Opa at the present is pretty much the poster child for mediocrity in East Sac dinning. The prices are reasonable. The food ain't bad, though it could easily be much much better and the service is so-so, again depending on if Phil is there. I'd recommend Opa Opa for a light lunch but would go elsewhere for more substantial meals.
Pretty good either for a light lunch or dinner. Cheap, fresh and fast...
I think Opa Opa is undergoing some massive marketing campaign because I've seen ads in the Sac magazine, fliers, discounts for Sac State students, and the owner was handing out complimentary $3 gift cards at dinner.
The owner is CLEARLY the owner; schmoozing with customers over a (couple) glass(es) of wine, handing fliers out personally. The cook, however, who took our order was so impatient; and for once I wasn't even being indecisive!
As for food, it's a solid option for Greek fast food, one big step up from Daphne's. I really liked the hummus, and I thought the pitas were surprisingly good considering they came from a bag. While a little on the pricey side, serving sizes are generous. I was a little shocked that when I ordered my salad with a side gyro, it came with slices of gyro meat on top. Yep, I'm a Greek food n00b.
Opa Nopa.
Not at all what I expected, and even after adjusting for expecations, a big let down.
You get a bad impression as soon as you walk up to the counter...why?
1) There's a sloppy pile of well thumbed menus that you have to look through to order. Ick. Most of them look like they were used as placemats or something, all greasy and stuff. Not exactly what I wanted to handle before eating.
2) You walk up to order, and there are these bizarre shrinkwrapped places of fake food, to show you what the dishes are. Ick. Not appetizing at all.
So, you reluctantly order, hope for the best and then have to repeat your whole order to the cashier so she can ring you up. Fine. Whatever.
Then you get a tray, so you can carry your drinks and utensils over, even though you dont really need a tray. Whatever.
Then finally, your food comes out. Yay! So, we got a greek salad (the Opa Opa half sized - good gawd, how big can the full size be, this was plenty for two.) Not a bad salad...but kind of skimpy on the feta, the olives, the tomatoes and the marinated onions. But it did taste ok.
But the entrees....hmm. What a disappointment. The lamb souvlaki was a giant plate of bland rice, a mix of burnt yet undercooked veggies, and one skewer with (again) mostly burn veggies and a few small pieces of lamb. :-(
The gyro wasnt much better. Some basic thinly sliced meat in a yogurt sauce on a very squishy pita. Forgettable.
Good thing I was hungry.
And no one smacked their door into my car. A plus, despite the tight parks.
Next!
I go often and really like Opa Opa. I'm glad they just added as Sac State student discount. The owner is also a lot more visible recently. I love lamb and beef and this restaurant uses fresh spices and ingredients that make it hard to resist.
Cons: The sides are overpriced.
Just made my first visit to Opa Opa tonight and I definitely plan on going back.
They have an extensive menu, a little pricey, but you get quite a bit. The wait staff is excellent. There was so much on the menu that I hadn't seen before so it took me a while to order but they didn't complain, they even helped me with the names of different items. I think I ended up getting Moussaka (maybe that's what it was called). They took my name and said they would call when it was ready but they ended up bringing out every ones food.
The food was delicious. Very fresh hummus, and the pita bread was so soft. Mmmm The Moussaka, which I ordered, I would compare to like a lasagna. It had eggplant, meat sauce, and some kind of creme sauce and was served over rice. Again a little pricey, I think with my drink it came to about $12 but it was a lot of food, well worth it.
Didn't have enough room to try any of the sweets from next door but I was kinda disappointed when I seen the baklava. It looked like it had been there for a while and was dry but I didn't try any so I'm not sure.
Not bad, not great: It's still just "A-OK." There's a funny taste in the food too... unless you are SUPER hungry
I know what this food is supposed to taste like. This food tastes similar, like the same way a McDonald's cheeseburger tastes like one made one the grill by your Mommy. Yeah, not really similar at all.
It's better than Jack's though, and this place definitely could be great if they got some Grandma with lots of opinions to speak her mind.
The staff is pretty dejected. The owner is wonderfully pleasant, however.

You know, Opa opa is one of those places: Sometimes you go there and you're just like wow, that was… Read more »
Id like to give this place 2 1/2 stars actually. I think the food is ok. Keep in mind that I have only really had the Euro with some fries. The meat in the Euro was a little chewy for my taste and the whole thing was kinda flavorless, including the fries. If you want a really good Euro go to Cafe Morocco. I also thought that is was kinda pricey for what you get. On a non food note, its a clean place with a decent outside eating area but it just feels so fast foodie to me. The whole order/line process is goofy too. I'm not a big fan of the "pick up a paper menu" when you're just about to order approach. Also, parking is tough. Small parking lot with not a lot of street parking. It just feel inconvenient.
Food - Terrible. chicken was overcooked and dry. Rice was old.
Ambiance - Horrible. you're better off going to Daphne's.
Service - Mediocre at best. Again, you're better off going to Daphne's.
This is NOT authentic Greek food. It's a wanna-be Daphne's... and I don't even like Daphne's!
I just finished the gyro i got from this place and i have to say that i have had better and also expected better from this place. I should have listened to the people on this website that said it was only mediocre cause that's exactly what it was.
The gyro i got consisted of: A pita, some meat (i supposed it was lamb), and a little bit of yogurt. Honestly, that's it. It was dry and no vegetables like a real gyro. I think Jack in the Box has better Gyros which is quite sad since this place is supposed to be a Greek Restaurant.
The inside is nice though and the staff seems nice. Maybe if i ate IN the restaurant as opposed to take out.
But i doubt i'll be going back.
Oh yeah, good thing is that they have a discount for Sac State and UCDSOM students.
seems to have regular followers, but let me tell you, NOT GOOD! unfriendly staff. overpriced. would rather have dino's on folsom.
Thanks for talking this place down, yelpers, because the result was: I was pleasantly surprised. I expected little and while I'll agree it was a bit steep for lunch (about $10 for the lunch special which included sandwich, side salad and drink), I thought it was a great little stop for Greek eats.
I had the gyro, the meat of which was a yummy mixture of beef and lamb. Also had the tabbouleh (the flavor of which was a bit strong for my taste, but an interesting new food to try). Actually, I liked the cafeteria style setting because I got to see everything and honestly, everything looked intriguing and it made me want to return to try other options.
As a side note, I liked the soft Greek music, which kind of made me want to dance around a bit, clap and yell - what else? - "Opa! Opa!"
Not bad Greek food. The sample platter is the way to go. Hummus is tasty.
The boys are flirty too, so that's fun.
I lived for eight years in San Diego and became absolutely spoiled by the plethora of Greek dining options in that city. Imagine my disappointment upon moving to the Sacramento area; even the "best" Greek places (as voted by prominent society rags and newspapers) paled in comparison to what I was used to.
Then I found Opa Opa!
THIS is the Greek food I grew up with: generous portions of gyros carved from a rotating spit; blocks of feta cheese (not crumbled); real tzaziki sauce (not just plain yogurt or sour cream), fluffy, chewy pita bread. Yum!
The sampler platters are enough to feed two. A great value if you want to try a little of everything.
Don't expect taverna-quality ambience at Opa Opa. You order at the counter and someone will bring the food to your table. The place seems to be staffed mostly by CSU students, but they've always been pleasant. Opa Opa is more like the dining experience at a hole-in-the-wall in Athens: good-quality food at reasonable prices for the everyday person.
Bonus: it's next door to Sweeties.
Had free lunch here today, I had to listen to 5 minutes of a financial planner speal but got free lunch out of it.
Opa Opa salad with gyro meat was pretty tastey. I got the full size salad, and easily could have got the half size. The salad was huge, and 2 bucks more got me a whole lot of gyro meat. We ate outside on the patio, and boy there were alot of flys and bees buzzing around, other than that It was pretty good for a quick greek bite to eat.
I hate coming onto yelp and having my suspicions confirmed. Opa Opa is just ok.
Have really been trying to like this place for a couple years, and given it was the only Greek place around, I tolerated it.
1) Food. Just ok. The Gyros are a bit flavorless. The Hummus the same (I'd rather have the hummus from trader joe's...) The large dinner plates are really hit or miss - at times are really dry and boring. The Feta Burger is a hit though.
2) The Staff. Ugh. Two of the main cooks/supervisors are just downright awful with customer service. The last...and I mean last...time I was there I waited 5 minutes to order only to have 3 cute girls from Sac State who came in after me get their food before me and, of course, for free. Being flirtatious is fine, but not at the expense of a paying customer.
So, bottom line, I am done with this place. I have moved on to Dino's Dogs and Gyros, which isn't as nice in terms of ambiance, it certainly has much much better food.
I have a few reasons why I will no longer eat here-
1)Last time I visited I ordered a lamb sandwich. The meat had a piece of white ligament or vein in it. I have no idea what it was but it was so off putting I haven't been back since.
2)Never enough french fries. They load the meat onto the sandwiches but are cheap on the fries. Same with ordering dips, too much dip and not enough bread. I don't get it.
3)The owner was very rude to one of his staff in front of us. We were standing looking at the menu, not ready to order. He saw us standing there and approached his worker who was patiently waiting for us and told her "You need to engage the customer"
I really wanted to like this place and tried it plenty of times but if I want Greek food I think ill take my business elsewhere.
Went here on the word of some nerd. I won't be back to the store for more.
The gyro was a zero, the green salad was sorta pallid, the falafel was just awful, the pita wouldn't even be good with velveeta. The price was twice what would have been nice.
Opa! Opa!? Oh-a No-a Don't-a Go-a!
Maybe the problem is I just don't like Greek food.
When this place first opened I was all about it. But then the romance was over. I've been in twice recently and just stared at the menu and had to turn around and leave cause it just did not sound good. It's overpriced and just not delicious.
I've been there twice now and I've not been dissapointed either time. The first time I went in was right after tanning a couple doors down (Raez Bode Craze...awesome). I was starving and had been wanting to try Opa for some time. I ordered a traditional Greek Salad and as I was waiting the owner came over and started chatting with me. I happened to mention that it was my first time in and I was looking forward to trying the food. After I had gotten my salad he handed me an order of hummus with pita bread and said it was on the house.
When I got home and took a bite of my food my mouth did a happy dance! The salad was delicious! The ingredients were fresh and tasty and i've had a near constant craving for the hummus ever since.
I went again just this afternoon and ordered some different stuff. I got the Gyro, bf got the Sovlaki(sp?) and we shared the hummus. Bf thought the hummus was a little too Garliky..but whatev...more for me. The Gyro was a little...huge. Too much meat and not enough other stuff. I'm gonna stick with the salad next time. The Souvlaki was really good though. The sauce they give you with it is very very tasty.
All in all, 5 stars for the salad, minus one for the Gyro, minus one for the price(it's pretty expensive) and plus one for the owner giving me free hummus = 4 stars.
SOOO gooood!!! We are already planning on a second trip. I mean, don't be fooled by some of the reviews on here. Not too sure why people are actually complaining about the service or price. The staff was friendly and quite pleasant. The price was very reasonable. I mean, you could probably eat at McDonald's for around the same price, maybe a couple bucks more. What do people mean by expensive? Okay, $6.99 is not expensive for a lamb sandwich. You try making a lamb sandwich at home and see how much it costs you. I think some people don't realize the costs and time that go into preparing delicious and healthy food. Hello, even the store bought hummus is like $3.99 and it doesn't even taste as good as Opa Opa. Please try Opa with and OPEN mind like I did. If you go in with high expectations like you are eating at the best place in Greece, of course you are going to be upset. I am still baffled by the expensive comments. I suppose it is all relative and maybe some people are used to eating off the taco bell 59 79 99 value menu.
why such a low score!?! I love this place and they are always so willing to accommodate my wants. Ok, maybe it doesn't feel too greek or whatever, but at least it is nice and clean. The staff has always been great and they are quick too, unlike the greek village in who takes forvever, gets your order wrong, and tries to charge extra and pocket the cash. Sorry i'm still a bit mad about that. Anyway, my point is i can go into opa opa and order my gyro with my own toppings; lamb, feta, and hummus. No problems, and its soooo good. yep, now I'm hungry, i need to learn to yelp when i'm full.
I thought it was overpriced, especially for the amount of food. My friend and I got the lunch sampler, which was about $20. It included the equivalent of 1.5 gyros, three falafel, and four stuffed grapes leaves. The meat was probably the best of their offerings. Avoid the fries, as they are soggy and not tasty. They also have other types of food including pizza, grilled fish, and lamb meatloaf--is this fusion greek?
When we were there, the cashier messed up our order. She thought we ordered two salads totaling $9, but we really ordered a lunch sampler. I don't understand why she thought were ordered salad, but there certainly was a lack of communication within the employees.
Also, there was a man who was likely the owner who approached us as we walked in. He was nice at first, but then we realized that it was actually a facade of niceness. Opa! Opa! needs to concentrate on their food and service.
POOPA POOPA!
Cafeteria style Greek with zero hospitality. I made the mistake of ordering overcooked green beans in a nasty red sauce and a pathetic attempt at a Gyro. Uncomfortable atmosphere and mediocre quality food. Funky location right near Sac State. The staff was rude and unhelpful.
Almost as bad as Daphnes (Greek Donalds!)
Hard not to go when you have that coupon. And so...I go!
Gyros are surprisingly filling, tasty, and simple. Go and eat there often.
This joint gets five stars on the quick-and-healthyish Greek food scale.
It was fabulous, quick, garlicky and deliciously fresh.
The owner was on the lanai with us and knew one of my dining companions, he sent us an appetizer and flirted with us. He also invited us to their upcoming TWO YEAR anniversary party! To which I say, OPA! Bring the ouzo!
I am still super full and we ate hours ago. I can't wait until I'm hungry again to eat my gigantic container of leftovers.
Viva Opa!Opa!
The owners from Opa Opa came by my real estate office at 28th and J Streets to slip gift cards into every agent's mailbox slot. They included a menu but no explanation. I asked around the office and another agent said the cards were good for $7.00 at Opa Opa.
Last night, I gave my gift card to my husband because he had a craving for Greek food. Well, the cashier at Opa Opa ran the gift card through its machine two to three times, and there was no money on the gift card.
What a rip. What a marketing ploy. Give somebody a gift card but it's worthless! What will they think of next? I probably will never go there again. The food wasn't good enough to make up for being lured to the restaurant under false pretenses.
