This is why I fell in love with sushi.
I never eat salads, but I love their ginger salad dressing. The shrimp tempura is amazing. Virtually every roll is a symphony of flavor! They make their own soy sauce, and it is fantastic. No joke...I dip my chop sticks in the soy and lick away like a gerbil at a salt wheel it is so good.
It is a very pleasant atmosphere, with the traditional robes of the waitress, the wooden floors, and the gigantic fish in the aquarium.
I live in California with plenty of great sushi places. Even so, Ooka remains my all time favorite. Whenever I fly home I make a point to eat here again.
Ooka is my "if you were stranded on a desert island" food!
OK, I gotta update my review of OOKA, as we just had an incredibly GOOD night here. Our first time coming with our 4 (nearly 5) year old and sitting at the teppanyaki grill. (No, it's not Hibachi. It's teppanyaki, thank you very much.)
We made a same day reservation for 6:45 PM on a Saturday (tonight, actually) and were accomodated and got in just before it started to get packed & crazy - as Saturday nights at Ooka D-town are known to be.
Service was truly excellent. The waiter and teppanyaki chef were both extra accomodating to the little princess - the chef even made an extra Onion Volcano during the teppanyaki grilling portion. She was mesmerized.
The place had an unusually high number of kids and families - I guess I never noticed this before because every ogther time we have come sans bebe (thank god!) and usually we sit in the sushi dining room or at the sushi bar.
Once again I ordered the Seared striped bass with foie gras suishi and once again it was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Next time 2 orders! It's that good.
Toro was a bit of a disappointment (but at only $7.00 I had to try one). I also ordered 2 pieces of Maguro ($5.50 for 2 pieces vs. $7 for ONE toro - they said "O" but I bet it was "Chu".) Anyhow the toro was a little gristley and the Maguro was perfect. Next time I'll be skipping the toro and loading up on Hamachi (perfect and ocean-fresh) and the aforementioned seared bass with foie.
DD & DH had teppanyaki meals -which are never a HG for me. DD loved her shrimp, noodles and rice. She wouldn't touch the veggies.
Hubby ate his chicken meal but said (as predicted) it was too heavy on the soy and the margarine (yes they slather that grill in grease).
Bringing kids? The teppanyaki will keep them very entertained. Want a better meal? Order sushi based dishes. (Just my opinion.)
Go Ooka. What a change from the Domino's pizza and ultra-conservative Christian Bookshop that used to inhabit the space.

We have enjoyed coming to OOka for years now. Whenever in Doylestown and we want sushi -it's where… Read more »
Was the best before the renovations a while ago.
However they are still very good:)
"Ooka, one of life's great dining pleasures." - that's a little over the top, and I wouldn't say they're THAT super duper orgasmic, but they're not to be overlooked. My family and I had dinner here awhile ago and found their sushi to be fresh and well-prepared, and had no bad experiences with service.
This is a small place, and not as large as their other location, in Willow Grove, PA. If their hibachi is anything like Willow Grove's - delicious - check them out! Worth a trip if you're in the neighborhood.
Ooka is one of my top destinations for dinner with Friends, and it is certainly perfect for a large party-- but make sure you make your reservations in advance.
Ooka recently expanded their Doylestown location, and added a sleek bar where you can comfortably sit while your table is readied. The dining space also had a face-lift.
The Sushi here is amazing - the Spicy Tuna Roll is a Must, as is the Philadelphia Roll. It is fun to sit at the Sushi bar to watch the chefs prepare your meal- especially if you are planing on sticking with a quick sushi luch/dinner.
If Sushi is not "your bag, baby" then the next best option at Ooka is to eat Hibachi. At Hibachi, you eat at one of a few large tables which surround a grill (usually with another party)-- and watch your meal prepared in front of you. Hibachi dinner comes with clear soup, a small salad, your fish/beef/chicken/etc. entree, veggies, rice, and noodles. The best part of Ooka is really the Hibachi show, wherein most chefs attempt to engage and include everyone dining.
Ooka is really fun for all ages, but really I would not suggest a regular table/their Teriaki menu-- as it unfortunately falls short when compared to the rest of what Ooka has to offer.
Love those Crispy Spicy Salmon Rolls
A great sushi place and hibachi grill. The atmosphere in the Doylestown Ooka, in particular, is otherworldly that has a dark, cozy feel. The wait staff is friendly and service is good.
On the sushi side of things, there are some excellent rolls at Ooka. Try the Crispy, Spicy Salmon Rolls. The fish always tastes very fresh. The sushi prices are reasonable for sushi.
For Hibachi, expect a great show. The chefs are #1 good chefs first. The food is always well cooked and never overcooked. A great show? Sure. Expect antics like getting veggies lobbed into your mouth and a few good laughs. The price is definitely more reasonable for lunch, for hibachi, than it is for dinner. Take a $20 for lunch and more for dinner.
My family took me to Ooka for my birthday seeing as how I love sushi. The environment is well designed and clean and the service was fast and curteous. I ordered an assortment of their special rolls and was not dissappointed. The rolls were well balanced and the meat was perfect, the spicy scallop roll was particularly noteworthy. Others in my family not as occustomed to sushi ordered teriyaki that arrived promptly and very hot, they assure me it was excellent. Overall no complaints and good times were had. Great Japanese joint.
Ooka was a complete surprise from what I saw on the outside. Interior design of the place was totally hip. Felt like you were in a big city eating out.
Food was very good. The sweat potato tempura roll is amazingly good! New York roll and Western roll are both worthy of getting.
This is my first week in Doylestown and my first restaurant to review in the area. I have to say, I found it to be quite nice. My work colleagues recommended it and as they have been here 3 weeks longer than myself, I trust they have been to a few other places. The fact that they decided to come back is a good sign. Our table decided to get more entrees than sushi this go around but we didn't skip the appetizers. I had the garlic tuna (which I think was a special) and it was very good. The tuna was fresh and the sauce had a nice kick to it at the end. It was served with asparagus spears and some thin noodles. There were two other appetizers ordered at the table but since I was too busy inhaling mine, I didn't pay much attention but they seemed to go over just as well as mine did.
I followed this up with an order of the Chilean Sea Bass. Lord, I love this fish! They actually served it teriyaki style but that did not distract from the wonderful flavor. It came on top of some sauteed onions with broccoli and carrots not to mention a bowl of rice. I was stuffed, nicely so. Keep in mind all entrees come with miso soup and salad.
I am sure I will be heading back here again with the work team and next time I'll give the sushi a go.
We got to Doylestown a day before Thanksgiving Day and my husband's mother took us for dinner here.
It was around 8 PM. We went without reservation. We waited at the bar for while and were seated to Sushi section. This place also offers Teppan Yaki, pan grill on other side. It's a good size restaurant.
I went for very simple and ordered Chirashi sushi, bed of sushi rice with assorted Sashimi. It was okay. The fish were fine. I liked Octopus. It was cooked prefectly and was juicy. The rice should be Sushi rice but they used just regular white rice and that was disappointing. I guess see no Japanese working there that I shouldn't expect more....but it's a simple easy authentic dish if they would use Sushi rice. I understand if it's a roll, give a interesting name and can be creative as to add many interesting stuff like banana and mango even and works pretty well and with interesting names.
There was small salad with my dish. It was crunchy and fresh salad with Thousand Island but I wish the dressing they use were carrot-ginger miso dressing that most of Japanese restaurant use. I like that dressing and make my own at home. It's very easy to make.

My American family ordered some rolls. They were good except Salmon skin was not fresh. It tasted foul.
The fried calamari was over cooked for my taste. The calamari were a bit chewy.
It's definitely a place if you crave for good Japanese American foods in Doylestown!
Wow! This place was amazing. I stumbled into this place after a rather long nap and was not hungry, but after I started to eat I couldn't stop
The interior is beautifully done, just the right amount of light and the textures are wonderful. The service was fast and very friendly, their suggestions were very good as well.
Now onto the food: It's hard to find good sushi done right even in Tokyo. The texture and form of the rice is difficult to master and the chefs at Ooka gets it. This was a remarkable experience from the traditional sushi fare to the more experimental (yuzu, cranberry and almonds? so delicious). Delightful was an understatement - the presentation of many of the dishes was stunning as well.
While the price was a tad high, it was worth it.
Good sushi and entrees here. They've always been pretty consistent with their food. Come early since it usually gets really crowded during dinner time.
I came here with a friend once and as sat at the bar. We (and I mean just I) got pretty wasted while we eat a whole array of tasty things. The service is among the more gracious I've seen in a long while. If on a date or with that 'special friend' I'd say sit at the bar and order things you've never had before....
We drove an hour to get to this place based on some great reviews. We went strictly for Sushi, so perhaps the hibachi is amazing, and i have not experienced it. I started off with a seafood soup for $9 which was not bad but not worth the money. We had a small appetizer which was the Mango Summer Roll, it had a good amount of fish- but nothing great. The flavor wasnt a burst of fun in your mouth. Just average. We then moved on and ordered five rolls. Most of the sushi seemed very dry and suffered from a lack of creativity and sauce. One of the rolls had an after taste which reminded me of paint. (Yes, I am serious- paint). Most rolls had a good amount of fish inside which was fresh, (and you get a decent amount for the money you pay) but there was nothing special about the rolls. I was thoroughly disappointed since we drove an hour, only to discover another disappointing place for sushi. I will give them credit for good service, nice romantic and clean decor. However, I will not be returning for more sushi.
I don't mean to knock the first reviewer, but the review read too much like an advertisement. I found Ooka to be alright, maybe acceptable, for it's location--in the middle of Doylestown, PA. You can't expect the best, right?
That's what they have at Ooka, less than great sushi. I don't mean that in a harsh way; it simply wasn't great. Well I appreciated the variety and selection of dishes, and particularly rolls, at Ooka, I was disappointed at the quality of fish. Granted, I went on a Friday night, but it should have been fresher. That said, the rolls were very well-prepared and presented. The size was good as well.
However, and this is important, the sushi side of the restaurant as I'll call it, the area to the left as you enter, not the sushi bar, was disappointing. I say that because on a busy Friday night, having been seated nearly 45 minutes after our 7pm reservation, my girlfriend and I were repeatedly hit with a fresh gust of cool winter air as people moved in and out of the restaurant. That's just not nice. On top of that, we were not treated as well as I would have expected. My opinion, if you can't seat people within 10 minutes of their reservation and provide good service to those paying customers, you're failing.
So, while I will give Ooka at least one more go, if they don't remedy anything, they will retain my 3-star rating.
Don't be fooled by the location in a small strip shopping center across from a car wash. Once you enter Ooka, you will succumb to the calming and beautiful atmosphere. The staff is attentive and always is interested in accomodating you. This is a popular restaurant so there might be a wait if you do not have reservations. There is a varied selection from the menu to choose from (including sake)..all served fresh and delicious. Entrees comes with a soup or a salad, and the miso soup is very good.
Try their signature rolls (avocodo, mango, lobster, out of control rolls ...), and if you are shy about raw fish..their teriyake dishes are terrific.
The habachi section in the back room is great for family's with kids..and they put on a nice show while cooking in front of you.
However, I peronally prefer the calming atmosphere of the Sushi Bar area..It is a happy problem deciding.
Try the silky smooth and wonderful Japanese coconut or green tea ice cream if you have room for dessert.

Ooka..one of life's dining pleasures.
I've been to Ooka several times over the past couple of years. I have always had an excellent meal there. They are what most restaurants are not - very consistent! Their Sushi is fantastic, service is excellent, love the seafood teriyaki! I took my parents there right before Christmas and they had an amazing meal too. My parents raved about it for two days. My only complaint and reason for not giving Ooka 5 stars is because their dessert menu is a little weak. Lucky for me its not often I have enough room left over for dessert when I eat there. I would totally recommend for anyone in the area to give it a shot.
