i cant even wait to get home to yelp this place. ok i could have but HNL has wifi.
finishing this later cuz the pook has to watch the niners game online.
but it really does deserve 5 stars.
to be continued..
ok so now i can finish my review! yay!
on our first day of vacation we walked to ono seafood and then to leonards. i had spent a few days looking up places to go and when i showed the pook a pic of ono seafood's spicy tuna poke... he immediately agreed that this was a spot we had to visit.
we walked from our hotel and it took 35-40 mins. we each ordered a "poke bowl" which came with the spicy tuna, and rice with a soda or water all for $5.50 including tax. for the price.. you get a hefty portion. i couldnt finish and i had to save it for later.. although.. it didnt last very long cuz it was sooo delicious.
the poke comes with everything unless you say otherwise. i didnt have the melt in your mouth experience others have claimed but it was close. the spicy tuna was just a little spicy and had a great saucy texture with all the stuff mixed in. the chunks were cut just right and every bite was a piece of heaven. the pook rarely has that OMG reaction to food and this place made him so happy that we went back on our last day as well.
after reading a couple of reviews about the owners of this place i was expecting no smiles or service. i was surprised because the owners were friendly and even started a conversation. they asked us to come back the next time we were there and we definitely will be!!!
"Feels like we're dancin kinda close, I feel a little poke come through... on you"
I've had poke many times. I've made poke many times. In fact, I thought my poke was the best. Well now I realize it's the best poke you can get... in my house. That's about it.
Ono Seafood poke is no joke. It is so damn tasty. We got the spicy tuna poke with onions and limu, spicy tuna without onions, and also the kimchi poke. The first two were mighty tasty, enough spice kick to make you feel the heat but still not compromising the flavor. A nice use of sesame oil without too much shoyu, and the limu is nice and crunchy. The kimchi poke was ok - it tastes like they use sauce from a bottle... I think it would be better if they used real kimchi juice (I'm biased... I'm Korean). But funny how I complain because I finished the whole tub of kimchi poke so what the hell.... I loved it.
This place is a tiny shack. A blue one and it's hard to find. If you're heading south on Kapahulu it's on your left side.
This place is so fresh and they really know how to flavor their poke. I bought a pound of hawaiian style which is flavored so nicely with hawaiian salt, chili, and seaweed, but due to the chili has a bit of kick. The tuna is so fresh and literally melts completely in your mouth and a pound only costs about $13..so worth it.
The place is really hard to find though. When you're driving down Kapahulu, just look for the shell station and it's right next to it in the apartment complex. No place to sit, just pick up your lunch and eat in the car!
Food is okay ... Small little hole in wall, good luck in finding parking! Served with alot of ALOHA!!!!
I ordered ahi poke and wasn't to fond of it ... I tasted better!
Ok...now I can see why everyone says this place has the best poke...because they do!
After we had lunch at Ono's Hawaiian Food, we made our way over to Ono's Seafood to have a taste of the famous poke and I am so glad we did. We ordered a small portion just because we ate a ton of food and shared it among our group to get a taste. We got the poke with everything and man was it delicious! I loved the spicy kick it had and the fish was extremely fresh. Even our local friend says he comes here all the time to pick some up to bring to parties...
Try it..you can't go wrong!
The best poke I've ever had and I've tasted a lot of poke! They make it fresh for you right there in front of you! They also give you the option of omitting any ingredients if you don't like. This place is not to be confused with Ono Hawaiian Foods which is almost across the street. Also it is easily missed if you don't know where to go, it's in the parking lot of American Savings Bank on Kapahulu right next to the shell station.
Poke was one thing I was craving while in Hawaii. You just can't find good Poke like this in California. I had the Poke with rice and it was delicious! For $5.50, you get your poke of choice over rice and a can of soda or juice (I suggest the Apple Iced Tea). Who cares if there are no tables and chairs? I suggest you take your lunch to the beach and have a nice picnic.
This was definitely a winner! $5.50 for tako poke or ahi poke over rice. And they give you SOOOO much! Oh and you also get a can of soda w/ your poke all included for just $5.50. We also tried the kimchi squid and the raw crab. Both were really good as well. This is a must-stop for anyone visiting Waikiki.
Went here because of the reviews and had a hard time finding it. It really is a hole in the wall to next to an apartment building. I thought it was going to be a sit down restaurant but it's just a counter you walk up to and order. It's a little mom and pop place owned by Japanese people.
One of the ladies got mad at me because I ordered the wrong thing. If you're there for just one meal make sure you say 'poke with rice' instead of just 'poke'..that way she won't give you a pound of fish. Excuse me, I've never had this stuff before!
But anyway, it ended up being really good and unexpectedly spicy. It's $5.50 for a plate of poke with rice and that includes a small can of soda or a water bottle. And it is a lot of food.
Minimum order of $10 to use a credit/debit card.
I've been wanting to try their poke for sometime and this passed weekend was my first time. It's a small shop on Kapahulu.
I'd have to say their poke is really ONO!!! I had the Ahi Poke over rice with a drink for only $5.50. That was a deal. I also ordered 1/2 lb of spicy ahi & tako poke and it tasted great. They do give a lot for just 1/2 lb. If I were to go to Taniokas and order 1/2 of poke, I would end up with 1/2 of what Ono gives. Ono's is cheap and made fresh. Services was excellent.
Okei, seriously, I've tried so many places and I have finally decided that with its current shape up, Ono Seafood is now the best place to get my poke.
They made their Spicy Tuna a little spicier, so I am very happy.
Prices did go up by $2, so it's $14/lb which, btw, is still cheaper or competitive with any supermarket and other poke places.

Now that I've come here often enough I've realized that Ono Seafood has its on and off moments. When… Read more »
Mmm .. poke.
Easily passable, just turn into the apartment building parking lot when you see a Shell gas station. There is a blue awning over the store
So .. they raised their minimum order for poke to 1/2 lb. That's a lot of poke to finish. Too much for me for 1 sitting without feeling bloated and stuff so I opted for their poke with rice with bottled water/canned soda = $5.50.
I got the spicy poke w/o mayo. It came with a onions, green onions, and crunchy brown stuff (sea cucumber?). Aside from the onions I picked around, the poke was really good. It had a nice level of spiciness to it and the poke was really fresh.
Don't go too early, they might not have the poke yet. When I went early on Saturday, was told no poke til 11am :(
$10 minimum charge for credit cards
We were so excited to go to this shop anticipating the "Melted in your Mouth" and "perfectly seasoned" poke from Shirley H.
Betty and I were driving up and down Kapahulu Trying to find this darn place. We were both starving for Poke.
It's like what Kasey F says, it's very hard to find. We passed this place 2x. We had to park next to the Bank and walk to find this place. it's in a rundown apartment building, bottom right of the complex, with only 2 parking spaces in front designated for Ono Seafood.
It seemed like a Fish market. There were no tables, no place to eat.. just 1 display with several types of poke and Lomi Lomi Salmon. We looked on the wall and saw a Sam Choy quote from the local newspaper, which said he has never eaten there but his dear friend says they have the best poke. And he recommends this place.
This Hawaiian Celebrity endorsement tripled our expectations for the Poke!
They had a lunch special, Tuna Poke Rice Bow with Soda for $5.50!! So we ordered 2 of these and 1 container of lomi lomi.
I am an Avid Fan of Tuna Poke. They gave us a heaping scoop of poke and bucket full of rice.
The texture of the tuna did melt in my mouth, which I loved.
But, I DID NOT enjoy the Kim Chee Tasting Poke. We were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO disappointed in the flavor. It was okay.. it tasted like tuna mixed in with kimchee sauce. Maybe it was a bad batch? Maybe we ordered the wrong thing. i don't know. All i know is the Poke Flavor was not good.
The small container of Lomi Lomi a was even worse of a disappointment. there were so many chopped tomatoes that there was only 1/4 of the Lomi Lomi was salmon. I think the lime acidity cooked the salmon completely because the salmon had the texture and taste of Spam.
We were not sure if we ordered Salmon Lomi Lomi or Spam Lomi Lomi.
Over all it was just okay, maybe we went on an off day, because everyone else said it was the BEST POKE EVER. Later that week, we got poke from Costco and Don Quijote.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
We both Ranked the poke in the following order.
1. Don Quijote
2. Costco
3. Ono Seafood.
I think i will give the poke a second chance, but i will never get the Lomi Lomi Salmon ever again.
I love yelp - Ono Seafood has such amazing poki! My boyfriend and I were definitely surprised at the location (it's attached to a kind of skanky-looking motel) with a very no-frills atmosphere. When we walked in, there were 2 adorable Asian women standing behind the counter hard at work. The only thing I saw on the menu was a poki bowl for $5.50, which included rice and a drink of your choice. The fresh, smooth, and silky poki was nicely marinated and not too salty. I had the original flavor while my boyfriend chose the wasabi-flavor. Although both were good, I definitely won :) A great and simple meal full of flavor and texture for an even better price. My mouth is salivating just thinking about it. Thanks yelpers!
This was our first official meal in Oahu (eating at Zippy's the night before didn't count since nothing else was open when we flew in and we ended up there by default) and it was definitely a fantastic way to start off the trip. We were planning on hiking Diamond Head in the morning and needed some sustenance so we decided to stop by Ono Seafood since it was on the way and had come so highly recommended. You're probably thinking, "Poke for breakfast?" Of course. Why not? We were on vacation after all.
The poke at Ono Seafood is by far the best I have ever tasted. To be honest, I've never been much of a poke fan as I've always thought it was overly salty and found the slimy texture off-putting. However, the Hawaiian style Ahi Poke made to order for us at the counter here was fabulous. The ruby-hued fish glistened with sesame oil and the different textures from the Limu, crumbled Kukui nuts, freshly chopped green onions, chili pepper, and the slight crunch from the just sprinkled salt crystals married into absolute perfection. Paired with steaming hot rice, it was definitely a breakfast of the champions..
Here are some helpful hints about this place:
1. There's no place to sit down, this is strictly take-out only (the location can be sort of easy to miss since it is housed inside a motel).
2. They have 6 different types of Poke and they use Ahi in all of them except the Taco (Octopus) unless you specify otherwise.
3. The best way to taste the variety is to get a 1/4 lb of all the ones you want to try. Make sure to get rice too.
4. I really liked the Hawaiian style (I believe it uses sea salt instead of shoyu to season it) as well as the Taco. The Spicy Tuna had sort of a mayonnaise-y sauce on it that I was not feeling and the Lomi Lomi Salmon was a tad too salty for me. The Shoyu Poke was fine, just a little saltier and wetter than the Hawaiian style one.
Overall, this is the best place to get fresh Poke in Oahu for your fix.
Good eats.
Driving down Kapahulu as a tourist trying to find this place gave me one of those "I love Yelp" moments. THANK YOU to those yelpers that helpfully pointed out this tiny hole in the wall is located next to the Shell station and you can park by the bank. I was able to find this place with no problem and there was parking right in front.
The ladies working the place were kinda unfriendly, but no matter. We were there for the food, not the service. We ordered the ahi tuna done in shoyu style, hawaiian style, and spicy. My favorite of the three was the spicy. Man oh man, it was the perfect balance of creamy and spicy. We got rice to go and also picked up a bag of boiled peanuts.
The funniest thing is that we were unable to find someplace to eat the poke. We didn't find parking anywhere near a picnic spot so we just pulled into a parking lot for the zoo. There is a grass median there between the aisles of parked cars so we pulled out our beach chairs from the trunk and sat right there next to our parking meter. Hey, we had shade, grass, chairs, poke, and chopsticks. What more do you need? Our ghetto picnic was perfect.
The poke was amazing even though it had too much chili powder. As other yelpers have stated, the ahi tuna melts in your mouth. Very surprised to learn that the two women behind the counter were Vietnamese. Extra star just for that
Went here a year ago. I was impressed at how cheap the sashimi and poke was.
I thought the poke was pretty amazing until I found hair in my poke!
Clearly there is a cleanliness issue here.
deeeeelicious delicious delicious
i've never had poke before coming here, but I'm not sure I would get anything better. i had the tuna poke, and the tuna basically melted in my mouth. the poke was also perfectly seasoned, flavorful but not so much that it overpowered the fish.
probably THE best thing i had in oahu. a must have!
Don't get this small little mom and pop hole in the wall confused with the Ono Hawaiian food on the same street. I heard so much about this place as the "best poke" ever so I tried it out this past weekend. It really was the best I've had, I can practically eat just that as a meal along with their boiled peanuts.
They get their fish delivered fresh every morning and prepared when you order it. The ahi is perfectly flavored and melts in your mouth because of it's freshness. Makes me miss Hawaii even more...can't find good poke like this in Cali. I'm coming here again on my next trip back home.
Oh my god I love Ahi Poke. I can eat pounds of this stuff!! And that's what I exactly did!!
Ono Seafood is off the Waikiki strip, so not exactly walking distance, but still somewhat close by to my hotel. I stopped by on a morning and got a pound and a half of Ahi Tuna Poke -- made to order, so instinctively I got everything on it, extra spicy. I ate the entire one and a half pound in one sitting with some rice and beers.
I went back a couple hours later and ordered another pound of it and ate it that same day!
Yeah... I'm a fat ass and I love me some poke. I ordered poki from 4-5 other restaurants/shops prior to this, and this was probably the best I had. Definately fresh and not the crap that gets stringy between your teeth. The only unfortunate consequence from my poke binge was that I had the mad runs later that day... but I guess eating two and a half pounds of extra spicy raw tuna doesn't exactly do favors to your digestive tract.
i love fresh fish! this place is a great find on the island for inexpensive fresh sashimi (ahi) !!! t this is a small hole in the wall kind of place., but hat doesn't stop us from trying great new foods. BF and I made a stop here before going back home, I really wished I would have found this place sooner.
All the poke is made fresh right when you order it. Very nice vietnamese ladies. we had the :
Tako poke w/ rice & a drink combo - a very cheap deal! you wouldn't find a place like that back home. the combo meal, consists of any kind of poke listed on the menu, with a side of rice & a drink for $5.50! The tako poke has a light spiciness, very fresh & not rubbery.
Spicy ahi poke - we ordered 1/2 lb of this. It was spicy but so good, had the mayo mixture with it. this is a must try if you like spicy foods.
Shoyu poke - this dish was good, had the soy dressing to it. I thought it was ok. I was interested in the spicy poke more.
Ahi sashimi platter - I LOVE, LOVE this dish. This is super cheap!! only for $8 you can get this much ahi sashimi! This is a fantastic steal for some freshly caught fish from the island, not the imported junk we see back home. It truly melts in your mouth like butter. I kid you not. This is located in the refrigerator on the left hand side. if you don't see any there it might have been sold out or you can ask the ladies to make you a platter. This is truely a must have from Ono Seafood. We seriously had a ahi overload, but well worth it. all this for under $20 bucks w/ some change. cheap & good eats!
the only bad thing about this place is that there isn't a seating area. Like what other reviews said they ate it on the spot or at shell gas station. We actually drive up the street to a little strip mall w/ Safeway. There is plenty of outdoor table & chairs with umbrellas to help w/ the HOT sun.
enjoy!
Im in hawaii, so its natural to wanna try poke. Like many have addressed, its a hole the wall type of place (located right next to the shell gas station). Came here sunday 5 min before it closed and they were already closed, so I came back the next day in the morning but they lady said NO FISH YET. The next time i called to confirm there was fish before i drove by AHAH. For some reason I thought they would be way nicer, like the rest of the people on the island. Maybe its just me, but they came off kinda bitchy (case of the mondays?).
So I ordered 1/4 pound of the shoyu, hawaiian, spicy ahi, and the taco. They were all good! My favorite being the taco and shoyu. The fish was fresh and the poke was freshly prepared, what more could you ask for.
Its a to-go place, so there are no seats, so buy it and bounce. Based on reading previous reviews, price per pound has gone up to $13 from the $12 it was before. I guess they changed the rules, but they ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS NOW with a $10 minimum.
So go get your poke fix NOW!
I can't believe I lived down the street from Ono Seafood and only discovered it last month. One of the things that I miss most about Hawaii when I'm on the mainland is poke--and the stuff here is tops.
The poke is a bit expensive at $12/pound, but it's made to order and made with love by two soft-spoken but super sweet Vietnamese ladies. The ahi tastes like butter of the sea--fresh, melty, tastbud-tingling. My favorite is the spicy ahi poke with its kick, cream, crunchy tobikko, and sweet onions. Mmmm. The shoyu ahi poke and tako poke are also incredibly delicious but decidedly milder.
I highly doubt you can go wrong with any of the poke. For the perfect picnic, leave the straw basket at home--buy a quarter pound each of three different pokes and bring your own rice and drinks to the beach. Voila, instant semi-homemade date =)
I'm not an expert in poke, but this place is pretty darn good. I just had poke at an expensive restaurant the same day and this place kicked the restaurants butt. It's way better flavor and quality. I will probably be back for more - though it's a bit of a walk from the beach and it's hard to find. We got the shoyu flavor.
I read great reviews for this place, so Roommate and I searched it out on a poke & beer Friday. We spotted it next to a gas station and parked in the very convenient spots right in front of the store.
When we went in, I asked the lady behind the counter if she was the one I was supposed to order from, since she was looking at me like she was a little confused. She went behind the refrigerators and got another lady. I asked this lady if I could taste the miso ahi poke, and she asked me if I wanted to buy a half pound. I told her no, I wanted to taste the miso, and she asked me if I wanted to buy a half pound. I told her no again, and she asked if I wanted to buy a half pound. When she finally understood I wanted to taste, not buy yet, I got the death-stare and she complained, "I have to make if you want to try." I totally didn't feel bad but she totally wanted me to.
I got to taste the miso, and it was ok, and as usual we got the spicy ahi and the tako, and we bought some smoked tako from the cooler too. I caved and got the miso ahi, I can't lie.
Unfortunately, it was all pretty mediocre, except the smoked tako. Roommate loved it and so did his brother; it's been christened "the Asian bacon," since they're both huge bacon fans and they both loved this stuff. The rest of the poke wasn't worth writing home about. Too much mayo in the spicy, not enough flavor in the miso, and the tako was just okay. Add that to the nasty service, and we're definitely not going back.
OH. EM. GEE.
This has to be THE best place to get Poke while in Hawaii. We tried Foodland's, Big Kahuna, a couple of other places, and even at the luau at PCC... not even close...
Little hole in the wall, won't notice it unless you know it's there... Even a GPS will steer you wrong! Stupid GPS brought me in front of the bank, and I was confused, looking around for it. I thought they've closed it down because the GPS is not always accurate nor updated. I decided to walk up a block and finally found it. It's between a Shell station and an apartment complex. No seating, only take out counter.
The first time we went there, we had the Ahi Tuna and the Tako Poke special, which comes with rice and a soda. $5.50 each. It felt like stealing!
The Ahi Tuna was much better, so my boyfriend decided to only get that all the other times we came afterwards. It's made to order, so it's tender and delicious! It's mixed well together and you can just eat them forever without getting tired! Looking at the pictures posted on here is making my mouth water, remembering how awesome they tasted...
We went there 4 times in the one week we spent in Honolulu. We should've brought some home.... If only we can find a place that can be half as good as that in the Bay Area....
My new Poke list would not be complete without including Ono Seafoods on Kapahulu Avenue.
Aunty makes it fresh, made to order. Tell her exactly how you like your poke. Spicy?, lots of limu?, plenty shoyu sauce?, chili peppers?, sesame oil?, inamona?, choke on the white and green onions? or no onions at all?. Tell her you want EV-VER-REE-THING, that's the best way.
Also, check out the reefer in front. Pickled mango, dried aku, sashimi, boiled peanuts, sliced tako, bottled chili pepper water. Good stuff.
Prices can be high, but you're paying for fresh quality fish. Not the previously frozen kine with lots of strings in it.
4.5 stars
c'mon aunty your rent isn't that high, you can lower the prices lil bit.
4.5 stars!
Another beloved hole in the wall, located next door to the shell gas station, this place is another diamond in the rough. No need park along the street cause there's a customer lot.
I cant help but sense that every fresh batch of poke that the Vietnamese woman makes behind her little counter is done with love and care, because it truly is very VERY good.
To be safe, I went by other yelpers' recommendations and got the spicy tuna and tako poke. I would like to be more adventurous but there's not even any pictures of what the other poke look like (which I'm sure are good too). I feel like this place just lacks a better description of whats in the different poke, pictures of them, and some seating. I don't mind paying a bit extra for quality, so the price doesn't really bother me, definitely worth it and will be back!!
Ono Seafood is definitely one of the best places to have fresh and super tasty poke. I thought I've experienced great tasting Poke but was quickly corrected after an unforgettable lunch plate. The tuna literally melted and was seasoned with the right amount of spices. Add with a healthily serving of white rice and choice of soda for JUST $5.50!! You REALLY can't beat that. Now that I am back from vacation I am waiting for my next visit. Ono will definitely be my first stop!
Yelp helps. We were visiting Honolulu and the reviews of Ono Seafood got me curious.
So, we drove to Ono Seafood bought a pound of ahi tuna poke (indeed, by default it is tuna if you don't specify otherwise). Yes, my husband asked for rice. Then we drove to Sans Souci beach and ate by the park table underneath a huge banyan tree. It was great meal and one of the beautiful surprises of our trip.
Please note that this is only a take-out place.
Poke Bowl is great value. I enjoyed mine with shoyu poke, delicious! The shoyu is the best poke I've had so far in Oahu, and we've been eating poke everday for the past 4 days! My favorite part was watching the shop owner mix the poke right in front of us. The spicy tuna was nothing special though, a little disappointing, hence the 4 not 5 star I would've given it otherwise.
When we came here, we had no idea what Poke was except "cubed raw fish" as described by yelpers. My boyfriend and I are big sushi eaters and we mostly just love tuna so we were a bit nervous about what kinds of fish we'd be getting. To our absolute delight, poke is by default Tuna! Okay, so there's also tako (octopus) poke, but you have to say "tako poke". For tuna poke, you just say "poke". It's basically cubed pieces of ahi tuna mixed with various sauces depending on what you order. The lady at Ono Seafood mixes the tuna after you order it, so it's freshly made. Wow, $12 for a whole pound. $8 for a half pound of sashimi. These prices made us a little dizzy with happiness we must have come back enough to bring our mercury levels to a record high.
The minimum order for poke is 1/4 lb, so we tried 1/4 lb of each flavor. Shoyu is our fav! Then miso. We also ordered rice ($1 for small, $2 for large) and got some chopsticks and napkins and drove down the street to safeway to eat. Safeway has a bunch of picnic tables in front. (Yea, this place is a tiny hole-in-the-wall fish-market-looking place so there's no seating.
Don't confuse this place with Ono's Hawaiian food. That's a completely different restaurant down the street that serves pig and stuff (Yumm, but different!).
I went to Hawaii for vacation and didn't know what was good to eat so of course I went to yelp for guidance. As I browsed the restaurants in the area I noticed people mentioning a dish called ahi poke. It was the first I've heard of it. Apparently people swear by the stuff. Sold me. I had to try it and if I was going to try this poke thing for the first time. I had to go to the highest rated poke place that yelp had to offer. That is when I stumbled upon Ono Seafood.
Finding the place wasn't easy because the joint is so small it's easy to miss. It really is a hole in the wall. I asked for 1/2 a pound of the ahi poke with everything on it (recommended by yelpers). Even though this was my first time trying ahi poke and even though this flavor and feeling was new to me I instantly knew that this poke was a really good poke. The fish was like butter and so fresh! And the seasoning was superb.
Remember how many years ago you tried sushi for the first time and since then you've tried many types of sushi both good and bad. Just imagine the best sushi you've tried in all of your years and going back in time and having that sushi as the first sushi you've ever had. Yeah it was kinda like that. It was new, it was interesting, it became amazing and as a foodie i knew that this was a great dish. Hands down worth going out of your way to try.
Pretty good poke. Store is easily missed and I almost walked to the apartments from the address and GPS directions ;p
If you do manage to find the small joint, you will get yourself some well seasoned and fresh poke! I love the bits of seaweed found in it. I had the smallest order (1/2 lb) @ $6 with everything(!) and then proceeded to have lunch @ Ono Hawaiian. I must say that the small order of poke was much too much for me - and I'm a big sashimi fan. Hmmm
oh man i'm gonna get some harsh treatment for giving only three stars but i honestly had higher expectations... I got the limu with the works and spicy ahi. The spicy ahi was spicy and creamy. I liked it better than the limu one. I kinda wished the limu was crunchy.
Before i tried this place, i went to whole foods to get limu poke and this place don't compare to the one at whole foods. I like my limu crunchy and not limp. I'm going back to whole foods to purchase my poke from now on although the spicy poke at whole foods is horrible. At least the limu one is the best poke i ever tried at whole foods. I didn't feel like there was anything special about the poke here compare to poke at foodland and all other supermarkets, not to mention it's a little bit more expensive than whole foods poke. Next time im craving poke, im going to safeway nearby my house instead...
like zohan said,
You see it,,,,
You smell it,,,,,
Now TAKE it,,,,,
bwahhhhhhhhh
I am not an expert on poke. In fact, I am just a newbie to the whole poke thing, but I really like what I tried from Ono Seafood. Found the great reviews from Yelp and walked from my Waikiki hotel, it wasn't a bad walk and it was a great excuse to eat as much poke as I wanted, because I knew I would walk it off on the way back to my hotel.
I tried the spicy poke, Hawaiian poke and the shoyu poke. I loved the drier Hawaiian style with the salty specks of Hawaiian salt. The spicy poke was yummy and creamy with tobikko studded mayo and the shoyu poke was really delicious, all of them made to order fresh. I was told by a few locals that they make their poke with kakui oil and real limu, that's why it's so good.
I did also try the smoked tako and pepper water and they were both really interesting, especially the water. It just tasted like chili pepper water. The smoked tako was way better then the stuff you find in the snack section in all the stores.
My girlfriend who is local told me that the poke at Ono was way overpriced, but for Waikiki, I think it was a good deal at $14/lb.
I will go again and next time I'm going to try the tako and miso poke. Get them with some rice and have myself a meal!
Great fresh handmade poke at $12/lb. made to order in big silver bowls by two old ladies churning it out like they've been doing this for decades.
The Shoyu Ahi poke and the Spicy Mayo Ahi poke were the highlights for me. The Shoyu Ahi was smooth and refreshing while the Spicy Mayo Ahi was creamy and had "puchi puchi" texture from tobiko.
NOTE: there is a restaurant across the street also called Ono that is more of a family restaurant (the Lau Lau looked/smelled pretty amazing) so you may get confused trying to find the right restaurant...
Not to say that happened to me or anything.... uh....
I found Ono Seafood on Yelp and I highly recommend this place if you like poke. I tried the tako, spicy tuna, and ahi pokes..and all were delicious, but my favorite has to be the tako. Another recommendation is their taegu which has the perfect amount of spice and chewiness. The prices were reasonable ($13/lb). Half a pound should be sufficient for one person. My only problem I have with this place is their location. You can find Ono Seafood between the Shell gas station and the American Savings Bank.
