An old local turned us onto this place several years ago. It is a great joint to try true old school Hawaiian food. It's a perfect little hole in the wall with lots of character. A couple of things:

    -It's BYOB
-No reservations, the close at 8pm, and you wait for a table out on the sidewalk. Enjoy the neighborhood as you sip your beer.
-Don't study the menu or order the combo meals. Just tell the staff you are want to try local food and would like them to recommend what to try. They will take very good care of you.

I don't think this place will be around for ever unless young bloods take over for some of the little old ladies. Get you some while you can!

    Lau lau.  Yum yum.

If you don't know what to order, just ask for help and they will put together a great feast for you as if you were guests in their home.  We just had a spread to feed 8 and it was under $70 for a full, and I mean full, dinner.  They suggested 2 combo platters, a beef stew, some fried fish and poke.  It was perfect, even though they were out of the beef stew and just brought a small bowl of the remants to put on the rice.

My husband and I ate here recently for lunch - and we were pleasantly surprised when we walked right in and didn't have to wait outside for a table. Woo hoo!
We were starving so we ordered quite a bit - the lau lau plate, side of beef stew, and large lomi salmon. There was a TON of food.
However, the lau lau was really bland to me. It needed more salt - and such a shame that they don't put any fish inside w/ the pork anymore (most places don't). It was cooked really well, but I ended up having to pour some shoyu and chili sauce on it to flavor it up a little.
The beef stew was good, but nothing special. Doesn't come with rice, so you have to order that extra.
Lomi salmon is really good - but whoa, pricey. Try pairing with poi when you eat it. Yum!
The owners there are really nice and you know they put lots of aloha in their cooking.
Haupia is generic and not like the awesome haupia you can get at Yama's.
It's a cash only place...and actually a bit on the pricier end for lunch (relative to other local places).
I've eaten  here before and had some awesome soups. but overall, disappointed with their lau lau.

There are literally hundreds of traditional Hawaiian/Polynesian food places in Hawaii, but Ono's is one of the best.   I try to go here during every trip to Hawaii, and the salty, savoriness and downright umami keep me coming back for more.    Pull up, wait in line, "no get mad"...be cool brah...and they will eventually seat you.    Order the LauLau and Kalua Pig which is incredible.   Try Taro Root (poi) on everything.

Ono Hawaiian has been around for years and will probably still be around many more years to come! With all those years of experience they truly know how to whip up an good old classic hawaiian feast!

They cook there food to perfection and season it just right. The last time I came here I over heard another (tourist) customer say "Wow it has such a natural savory taste" it was as if he were speaking what I was thinking!

I love the feel you get from here, you just know that it's locally owned. I mean you don't see Mcdonalds (no offense I love Mcd's) giving their left overs to their customers at the end of the day. My last visit to Ono Hawaiian was just before closing so when the bill was brought to my table the waiter generously gave a bowl of their onolicious haupia. Which by the way is so good it's not to coconuty and the texture is like rice cake. But the waiter came around again and gave us a bowl this peanut crunch dessert which was supper good too.

Ono Hawaiian is just another one of those staples of Oahu. It's one of those businesses that make hawaii, hawaii.

OHMAHGOSH I love Ono! Everyone is super friendly here and the food is amazing. The Kahlua pork and lau lau are the best. The chicken long rice and lomi salmon are good too, but the lau lau is tender, juicy, and really flavorful. Really friendly service, and delicious Hawaiian food! Be sure to get there early though, because this place gets packed and closes early.

Taste so good!  Authentic Hawaiian food.  Problem is that the price is a bit high (dinged a star for that)... but I suppose tourists shouldn't complain too much.  I hope the locals get a discount.

Otherwise, everything is fresh and very tasty.  As my friend would say, "taste so good it broke the mouth."

Definitely a place to try if you want to get local food.  The plates are a good option if you want to try a bunch of different things.

Wow and wow. This was the best local meal (less $25 for two!) we had on our visit to Oahu.

The Lau lau was mind blowing... the taro leaf and pork were so well balanced and cooked to perfection.

The lady (owners daughter?) was super nice. Explained to us the meal (combo for $20!) we were ordering. She noticed we loved the spicy sauce she had prepared, so she gave us a couple of quick refills.

Very homely..... we were lucky to get a seat right away, but a small line was beginning to form outside when we were leaving.

A must try for anyone visiting or living in Oahu!

For residents: you are no kama'aina if you haven't eaten here. For visitors: no trip is complete without a good meal at Ono!

The combo combination plate (kaula pig + laulau) feeds my hubby and me, and it is perfect to try a little of everything. And, try the poi. It can be an acquired taste, but it is something you must try if you are in Hawaii. And the prices are really inexpensive (not sure who thinks it is expensive, but for $10/person you leave happy and usually with leftovers).

Parking can be trick, but it is a short and pleasant walk from Waikiki, so if you are visiting I suggest just walking. Arrive early to avoid the lines and it closes early. If you are with a big party, arrive even earlier. If you are doing take out, you can call and order in advance.

Enjoy the walls, we have been here 10+ times and every time we discover a new personality on their walls =)

Last warning: NOT for vegetarians (unless you are happy to enjoy some poi, rice and haupia as your meal)

My go to local food spot when I'm on the island. Homemade, honest, fresh and incredible portion size. They are known for their lau lau, which while still can't beat grandma's, is amazing. Cash only, and you have to get lucky with parking. But not to far of a walk either if your staying on the zoo side of Waikiki.

Legit to the core, but SO PRICEY!

I love Hawaiian food and this place definitely satisfies but $16 for a plate lunch is taking it too far. For a Kalua Pig or Laulau plate maybe... but I got chicken long rice, which was a small portion and still costed the same as my friends who were getting way more food with the Kalua Pig or Laulau plate. I dont think I will be back here for a while due to the price.

A good spot for tourists or someone willing to fork it up for yummy food and the experience but not your everyday place for the average local looking to grind on the combo plate. Combo plate include the main dish of your choosing with rice or poi, pipikaula, haupia, lomilomi salmon.

I always wondered what is considered "Hawaiian Food". All I could think of was ALOT Of pineapples and coconuts! Eating at Ono's helped to answer my curiosity (and boy was I wrong with the pineapples and coconuts!).

We ordered the combination plate ($20) which consisted of Laulau, Kaulua Pork, Lomi Salmon, Pork Jerky, Rice and Haupia, and paid extra to try the infamous Poi (that every Hawaiian person that we have encountered told us to try it). The combination plate was very tasty (favorites were the pork jerky, haupia, and kaulua pork). The poi was my least favorite! It was very sour and tasted like wallpaper paste.

After trying poi, I cringe everytime someone mentions that term. I cringed when the tour guide told me that poi was a must try. I cringed at Paradise Cove Luau when poi was served on our plates. I cringed when I saw the picture of the poi I took at Ono's. I still cringe till this day when I think of it! Yes - even right now when I am typing it.

Nonetheless,  I had an awesome cultural and culinary experience eating at Ono's. Highly recommend Ono's Hawaiian Foods!

There is something soothing about  a place where you know the food is made with love and tradition is being passed on to you as a customer through your visit there.

I don't eat pork, which is a staple of Hawaiian food and therefore the main feature on the Ono menu but I still managed to enjoy the poi and chicken long rice.

Take your out of town visitors to share with them some real local flavour.

This place is one of those restaurants that both tourists and locals frequently visit. I met one couple there who go eat there every week! The Kalua Pork runs out fast. But that and the Lau Lau are incredibly delicious! Eating raw sweet onions was not really what I prefer and I couldn't manage to swallow down the poi, but everything else was tremendous!
The owner comes out of the restaurant to chat up with the people waiting outside to be seated. And our waiter taught us how to eat everything in order and season the food properly. Really friendly!

The Lau Lau and Kalua Prok were sooo yummy! Service is quick and efficient. Food is plentiful. Get in and get out of there so they can serve the long line of customers waiting outside for a table.

You know a place is good when there is a line out the door, it starts to rain and no one gets out of line.

We had a party of nine people so we got takeout. The lau lau was very tender and juicy. The chicken long rice was flavorful and the ahi was mighty tasty. I heard great things about the tripe stew, kalua pig and poi. The tako poke was okay, but not my favorite. I loved their haupia!

I'd definitely try them again. I was disappointed that they ran out of beef stew, so I need to try.

    YUM!!!

I should just stop right there and make you fly out to Honolulu and eat there.

We walked here from our hotel (not too far if you are at the south end of Waikiki Beach).

Got the sampler, it is pricey but was just right for the two of us. loved everything especially the lau lau.

It is a little pricey but who cares when you are in paradise and eating delicious food!

If you're looking for the real deal in Honolulu, Ono Hawaiian Foods is it!

The boyfriend and I stumbled upon Ono's on our way to Leonard's. We split a combo and it was the perfect amount for two people. We have eaten some Hawaiian food before but are by no means experts so we actually didn't know what many of the items on the menu were - they didn't really have descriptions. Because we didn't want to look stupid we just googled everything before we ordered.

We knew Kalua pork so that was easy. We chose that as the main item in the combo and hoped for the best. Everything we got was really good and the combo was perfect as it was like a sampler.
The kalua pork was nice and tender, perfect mixed with rice.
The lomi salmon was like a ceviche - raw. Good but not my favorite. The boyfriend like it better than me.
There was a jerky type meat (can't remember the name) that I really enjoyed. It had a little bit of spice to it.
And the combo also comes with haupia which is like coconut jello. Sounds weird but it's very refreshing and tasty.

The atmosphere is very "dive" but it's clean. The service was fine. Nice people but not real chatty or anything.

Ono's is worth getting yourself away from Waikiki. You won't find anything like this there.

Family got two combos - one with chicken and one with pork.  More than plenty of food for four.

The place is super tiny and you're better off getting the food to go than waiting for a table, but either way it's a great place for real Hawaiian food.  Good variety, freshly made.

What an amazing, local place! Went here after seeing Anthony Bourdain's show and him loving the lau lau, which I had (amazing!). It comes with some other small dishes including poi, all good too. The owners were so nice, and showed us how to properly eat the poi. Definitely put this place on the top of your list if traveling to Honolulu.

I was disappointed this last visit.  Went four times between 2006-2008 and just loved it each time, but a couple of weeks ago Ono let me down.

The long rice was really oily and tasted suspiciously like Campbell's condensed chicken broth.  Kalua pork a bit rubbery, sweet potatoes dry, haupia a touch grainy.  All thoroughly meh.  Their poi is still quite good, though.  Seemed like they were resting on their laurels.

The service for us haoles is always a little begrudging... you can tell they don't want us there.  That's not a change from last time, though, and I'm pretty used to it at the local haunts on the islands.

It's always been at the top of our list during Hawaii visits, and has been one of the very few reasons to make time for Honolulu... but I don't think we'll even bother next time.

    Listed in: Aloha, Hawaii!

GINORMOUS laulau. Just pass me the shoyu and chili pepper water and I'm good to go.

I ordered the laulau plate and a side of squid lu'au. I LOVE squid lu'au but this one didn't really do it for me, I wouldn't order it again. Everything else was delicious! If it wasn't always so busy and so close to crazy Waikiki I'd probably go there more. But for now, the huge laulau I just ate is going to have to last me a while.

This place is amazing! I suggest the combination plate, and sharing between 2 people. There is nothing in the combo plate that will dissappoint.......the Kahlua pork ( I forget the Hawaiian name) was my favorite while my boyfriend was over the moon for the pork that was wrapped and cooked in taro leaves.

We walked here from our hotel on the beach, so you will not have to travel far. The restaurant is small and quaint...we were fortunate to go at a time it was not overly busy, so there was no wait for us. The service is friendly and extremly accomodating and informative, especially for patrons new to Hawaiian food.

If you are visiting Hawaii and want authentic Hawaiian food, THIS IS THE PLACE!

ONO's hawaiian food. what the heck is all the ranting and raving about. i spent about 25.00 and had the worst lau lau i ever ate. dry, unflavored, the pork was overcooked too.  I can honestly say that if you go to St. louis drive in on fridays you can get an awesome hawaiian plate with, get this: poi, really juicy laulau, chick long rice, lomi salmon, haupia, and kalua pig for under 8.00. and it taste alot better than onos and you get a lot of food.

This was one of the best places we ate at while in Waikiki. It was simple, no fuss, and delicious. We came late in the evening (around 7pm) and waited patiently in line. We had a group of 7, and seeing that the place was so small, expected to wait.

There was basically only one table that would be able to accommodate a large group, and it was being occupied by a group that brought in a case of their own beer (seems to be the norm for restaurants to allow you to byob(ooze) around here) and they were taking their sweet time on finishing the case they brought, anyhow, we were worried that we wouldn't make it in in time as they close at 8pm. As 8:10 rounds around we thought we were screwed, but luckily the waiter lumped the last bit of us and the rest of the line in and plopped us all down at the same time for the last call.

What happened next was all a blur, massive food was ordered including Kalua Pork, watercress and salt meat soup, beef stew, butterfish luau, rice... and it was all demolished in a matter of minutes, sadly they were all out of Lau Lau, (the large group prior to us hoarded it all, sad face, but whatdya gonna do.) it still didn't take away from the experience of the home cooked authentic Hawaiian Food, everything was tasty and you can't beat the company of great friends.

I would definitely recommend this place at least once during your stay, great memories will be had for sure :)

Tip: Arrive early - there WILL be a line, and as the sign says... be cool, they will be with you very soon :)

Great food! Great people! The gentleman who served us, was very helpful and was very informative on what food to try. We had the Combination plate, and on that plate we had Lau Lau which was very delicious, Kalua pig, and ox tail soup with water crest! Delicious!

Everyone we spoke to said there would be a wait time, but when we arrived we were told Tuesday's were usually their slow days and Monday's are packed since they are closed on Sunday's. Make sure you don't get there too late, they do sometimes run out of the Lau Lau.

    Great find! Local approved food!

This gem of an eatery is located about a mile north of Kapiolani Park and is in a class all it's own. The small restaurant seats about 2 dozen and frequently has a waiting line due to it's popularity. Ono offers the taste of authentic Hawaii- Laulau (pork wrapped in taro leaves), lomi salmon and poi- which I finally "got", as it was explained by the lovely manager how to enjoy it as condiment with the rest of the meal.  Go early- we got in easy at 5:30, a line was formed by 6pm.

I was really excited on coming to try out Ono Hawaiian foods. This place makes the authentic Hawaiian food. The wait wasn't too long outside and it's a small restaurant that seats only a handful of people. The food comes out very quick here. The service was pretty attentive as well. I saw that the prices from the website and when you're actually there has raised.

I ordered the combo with the pork and lau lau. It came with a bunch of side dishes and I shared it with my friend. The combo did a good job of feeding for two. The lau lau was really juicy inside. The shredded pork had a light flavoring to it. It also came with a salsa like dish with salmon in it. Some pork jerky that was okay. The white rice that is a must in Hawaiian dining and some coconut jelly. The food is just okay for me because it got boring to eat quick.

I don't know how or why any "celebrities" rave about Ono's. But no one is paying me so I have to tell the truth: the meal I had there was, bar none, the WORST swill I've ever had the misfortune to eat. Ever. EVER. The pork was so loaded with MSG that I spit it out.  My brother, who lives in Honolulu, warned me and tried to dissuade me from eating there but I insisted as I wanted "authentic Hawaiian food."  Bro was right (for once).
When diced onions are the ONLY edible thing served, there's a problem.  The poi was tasteless; I might as well  have been eating library paste.
Run---do not walk---to the nearest bus stop and get far, far away from Ono's.

We came here Tuesday for lunch.  At first parking looked like it would be a challenge but we were lucky and found metered parking one block away.  When we walked towards Ono we saw signs that you could park at the Hawaiian Bank lot across the street for $1 so just FYI. We were there around noon and got a table right away just before the lines started forming outside.

This had to be one of the best meals we had while in Honolulu!  Hubby and I shared the combination plate which for $20 had Laulau, Kaulua Pork, Lomi Salmon, Pork Jerky, Rice and Haupia Cream.  It's very much a mom and pop sort of place with people who care about their customers and were happy to explain what everything is and/or how to eat it.  Sure it's a little divey inside with zero atmosphere but the food was fantastic- particularly the Laulau.  Since we got rice with our combo plate, they asked if we've tried Poi before.  We have but they brought us a sampling anyways which was nice.  The uncle that dropped it off explained the Poi was day old which gives it a little tart flavor.  We tried some and thought it was pretty good actually.  We only had Poi at a luau before so it was nice to try a real version of it.  We also got chili paste which they mixed up specially for us =)

If you want to try Hawaiian food go to Ono. We were glad we did!

Tip: Bring cash!  This is a cash only establishment but there is an ATM across the street if you forget.

*ACHTUNG* This "food" is NOT fit for human consumption. It's a cash-only restaurant. Yup, that's so you can't complain to your credit card company that they didn't hold up their part of the agreement and give you edible things.

I am not a picky person. I am not a health foodie. I love the heck out of KFC, In 'N Out - read my rave review on Byron's if you think I'm just being prissy about Hawaiian food.

I had a variety of their items, and an hour later, I feel certain that I've got an intestinal obstruction. I was just informed that I am intermittently making pre-vomit noises. Here are some of the things I tried, and a description I hope will keep you from the same fate:

Chicken lau lau: flavorless, stringy chicken wrapped in green goop. No flavors of any kind present besides salt.

Butterfish luau: a lukewarm bowl of pond-scum slime green sludge with a few pieces of fish. Tasted pretty much like it looked: scummy and fishy.

Pipikaula: Decent beef jerky. Certainly overpriced at $6.35 for a small bowl, though.

Kalua pig: (to quote the Oatmeal) POSEIDON'S SALTY BUTTHOLE! Just drink seawater, it's cheaper.

Lomi salmon: onion and brined salmon. Just another variation on the theme. Fishy, salty, overpoweringly oniony, but still somehow lacking flavor. Available at Costco for $4.99 per quart.

Poke squid: rubbery, oniony. Not convinced it was real squid and not that fake plastic food you sometimes see in windows.

And, to save the worst for last, poi: puce slop with a slight sourness. Reminiscent of mystery sauce left in the back of the fridge just a year or two too long.

I can't even give them a pity star for service. An old lady approached us to take our order when we were clearly not ready to order. She said she'd come back. Within 2 minutes - when it was still abundantly clear we had not decided, she was back at our table asking if we needed more time. Not in a friendly way, either. In a grumpy "hurry and order, I haven't got all day" way.

If you're on vacation, avoid this place like the plague unless you want an upset stomach to ruin your island experience. It's not food, I tell ya!

Best lau lau and kalua pig in Honolulu. Lack ambience but that's part of the charm, I guess.  If you've never tried Hawaiian food and is not really adventurous where food is concerned, just be aware that pork laulaus are meat encased in spinach steamed or boiled almost to a paste (yes, it doesn't sound appetizing but it is :D
Kalua pig is similar to shredded or pulled pork with a smoky flavor.

I'm from Atlanta, Georgia...and I ate here in August 2010 during a business trip just to try out some Hawaiian food, and to tell you the truth I liked it. I ordered the KALUA PIG PLATE with poi (a Polynesian staple food) and my grand total came to $15.00 flat with taxes...It was interesting to eat, and the pig was great...They do not accept payment via credit/debit card. I had to pay with cash...Highly recommend!!!

Us hicks from Texas weren't sure what this what this whole Hawaiian thing was about but I'm glad we took the time to find out. Most of us stuck with the kaluha pig and were pleasantly surprised. This place falls in the "don't judge a book by its cover" category. The owner was delightful and eager to show us how to eat like a native. Small, so you'll likely have a wait and they are cash only...

This place is golden! I ordered the Combo Plate also w a side bowl of their Chicken Long Rice. The combo came with a bowl of Lau lau, Kalua Pig, lomi salmon, pipikaula, onions, rice & haupia. I kid you not, the best Lau Lau EVER!!! I opened that puppy up and it was like Christmas morning. Pork was moist & tender, even had a little fat for my taste buds. Kalua pig was also awesome, especially with the lomi salmon. Haupia was a good treat after the meal. I'm definitely coming back here on my next trip back. I still dream about their Lau Lau.... Mmmmmm....

    PROS:
    - the best place to go for Hawaiian food. come on people...Hawaiian food is not L&L and teriyaki, or bbq etc. etc...that's local food! Hawaiian food is local food but local food is not always Hawaiian food!
    anyway...
    - lau lau is huge! always moist and never dry and never full of fat like other places
    - they have day old poi! yum!!!
    - salt meat watercress is so so so so so good! if you haven't tried it and like watercress, this is the dish you must order! it's also perfect for hangovers!
    - everyone who works there is really nice. they are really helpful to the tourist who come in.
    - my friends and i always order lau lau, salt meat watercress, large day old poi, squid luau, pipikaula, and haupia. we never leave hungry or dissatisfied!

    CONS:
    - parking in front can be a mess. the back streets by the golf course always have parking though. It's like a 3 minute walk to Ono's from there and it'll only help your appetite!
    - they only accept cash but there are banks right across the street. it's kind of tricky getting all the cars to stop for you even if you're in the cross walk so come prepared!
    - not open on sundays which is when i usually crave their food the most :(
    - you will be in a food coma after!
